Tammy, this brought a tear to my eye. My momma always made a from scratch German Chocolate cake including from scratch frosting for my birthdays... I'm 61 today and wish I had some of that cake... Miss you momma 🙏
Boy I tell you what, I feel like grandma's cooking is still alive well. Now and days everybody wants it already made up & cheap. Love Collard Valley Cooks
✍ Hi Tammy and Chris... I finally found someone who loves German chocolate cake as much as I do. My very favorite of all cakes. I used to make mine from scratch from the recipe on the Bakers German chocolate and use the recipe for the cooked frosting since I was 10 years old. I'm 77 so now I use a German chocolate cake mix But still make the frosting from scratch...yum nothing tastes better and can eat it with a spoon its so delicious💗 I hear your kitty 🐈Jade but how is Joanne? I don't see the puppies very much they are so cute 💗 Well Tammy got to go cook my green beans everything else is in the oven finishing cooking. God Bless LuvYa! Bye from Ohio❄
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I have made this for my husband and he said it's the best recipe he's EVER had. And he's had a lot bc like Chris, this is his most favorite kind of cake! 🥰
German chocolate is not from Germany. The name comes from Sam German - who was either an American or an Englishman, depending on what you read. In 1852, he invented a style of sweet baking chocolate for the Baker's chocolate company. The company named it after him, but "German's Chocolate" didn't become well-known until 1957. About a 105 yrs. after the creation of German's sweet chocolate, the Dallas morning news published a cake recipe by a Texas homemaker, Mrs. George Clay. She called her sweet recipe "German's Chocolate Cake" because it called for this brands sweeter variety chocolate.
I absolutely lovvvvve loveeeee this cake my neighbor Mrs. Vera(SHE WAS LIKE MY GMA SHE TOOK CARE OF ME) made this cake for me every year for my bday. I couldnt wait. So delish and never dry this cake is very moist and flavorful. THANK YOU FOR THIS RECIPE. I REALLY ENJOY WATCHING AND TASTING YOUR RECIPES. I USE YOUR REIPES VERY OFTEN
My favorite cake. My momma used to make it for me on my birthday every year. You're making me so hungry for a good German chocolate cake - like yours!😋
I've been married 42 yrs. and my husband asked me to make him a German Chocolate cake for his birthday one year. It took me all day to make that cake and it was totally from scratch! So was the frosting. It was delicious!
Thanks so much for the sheet cake version Tammy! It saves about 30 minutes because I fuss with the layers so that they are perfect, so I don't make it that often.
I was sick the past few days.... I've been watching nothing but Collard Valley Cooks (when I was awake) to help me get through my cold/ flu stuff. On the mend now. Thanks for reminding/ showing all of us of how are mommas (in my case, my dad) used to cook. My dad was the cook of the family and I hope I took after him. I cook for my family, too. Your cooking looks a lot like my dad's. Good ole' southern cooking. Thanks, Tammy and Chris... for wonderful cooking content!
My mother didn't like chocolate, yet she loved German chocolate cake. I think part of it was she loved pecans and coconut. She was part German, and her grandmother used to make this for her when she was little. I'm going to try this recipe. It looks so tasty. I wish my mom was still here to taste it too. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.
I made my Aunts homemade German chocolate cake with this icing for a friends daughters husband at their wedding and it was divine! The best cake ever! I doubled the recipe because of needing more but did sheet cake n cut into u shape! So many people wanted me to make them one but I was not for hire! Lol but it is very much like this one! Only use 2 1/4 cups flour! Our pastor gets a single cake for his birthday most years! Depends on how good he is! Lol! No sometimes we are gone for the holidays but he gets at least one a year!
Wow did you bring back a forgotten memory, the first cake I ever learned to make was Baker's German Chocolate Cake using a bar of Baker's German's Chocolate Bar, I did such a good job my mother would ask me to make them whenever she wanted one for the family. I did some research about this recipe for a job I had, it is actually not German at all, in the mid 1800's Sam German created a chocolate bar for Baker's Chocolate Company and they named the bar after him, a recipe was published in the late 1950's as a recipe of the day in a Texas newspaper, can't remember the woman's name but she was a home maker and submitted the recipe which used a bar a bar of Baker's German's Chocolate, the recipe spread throughout the country and is still popular today, the name having changed to German Chocolate Cake. I guess now you have my taste buds going I know what I am making for my next cake. Thanks for the memory.
As a diabetic , I tried my level best not to click on this episode but the temptation was too great. Temptation is very real So I gave this video a like anyway even tho I feel like I have sinned 😉😜
Fun Fact: German Chocolate cake was actually created in Texas, in 1852. Originating in the United States, it owes its name to an English-American chocolate maker named Samuel German, who developed a formulation of dark baking chocolate that came to be used in the cake recipe. It is not German by nationality.
@@CollardValleyCooks Tammy the cake you made today for your family looked amazing and the tips you told us about making more cake mix is so good . Never enough cake mix in boxes nowadays. Thanks and the icing looked delicious. I could eat it all by it’s self😋
My oldest son loves German chocolate cake. I always use box cake mix and icing to make one for him. I need to use your recipes for the cake and icing. Because yours looks so delicious.
I always add more coconut to my icing until it’s very thick. It’s what my family and friends prefer and it looks so pretty. Also, I just use walnuts because I always have them and they are less expensive than pecans up north. I love this cake. I used to make it as a layer cake and still do for dessert when I have guests, but it’s just as delicious as a sheet cake. Like you, I prefer Hershey’s chocolate products. Give me a good old Hersey bar any day of the week and I mean the original milk chocolate bar, no nuts. I don’t care what anybody says. I do love Ghirardelli’s chips for baking, however. They cost twice as much, but who cares. They have the only milk chocolate chips I will bake with on occasion. I also agree that Baker’s coconut is the best. It’s what I always buy.
Oh this cake looks good Tammy. I am not a coconut fan but my mom used to make these and I loved them. I was trying to print off the recipe but I must be doing something wrong. Will keep trying. Mrs Steve
Tammy that cake is all that. The topping is my favorite. I love how you show us exactly what things should look like. I bet your goodies were the hit of every pot luck, church. Your job and Chris’s. I’m so hungry now. Yummy looking and I bet tasting. Love Ya❤❤❤
That looks so good I was about ready to lick my laptop screen! LOL I'm seriously going to do this recipe. My mama always made them for my birthday and I'm 60 now, been 40 Yrs since, but I love a good German Chocolate cake. Thank you, and you make this look so easy. Have a wonderful Blessed Day!
My FAVORITE CAKE, I use the Baker's German Chocolate for my cake but this is a different idea for a cake. I go for blood work tomorrow for my A1C and I have not had a good dessert since Christmas. I am so ready for a good cake, and this sure sounds like it will be great for my taste buds but not my diabetes. LOL I will print off this recipe because it is different. Thank you Tammy, I could just eat the icing. LOL LOL
My favorite cake growing up! I too always requested this for my birthday. I’ve been looking for a good German chocolate cake recipe, and this is it so thank you!
I've never seen a mixer like that! Love it! Can I use a glass lasagna pan to cook this in? Or a tube cake pan? That's my choices, what do you suggest? Thank you. I look forward to trying your recipes, they all look delicious 😋
This is my husbands favorite cake also, I put a homemade chocolate buttercream frosting and then the coconut/pecan topping! It is so decadent and delicious cake! I just put a thin layer with half the sugar in the buttercream so it's not as sweet, it's all up to your taste.

I came to make that same explanation. Actually, if you look at the box, it's even called "German's" .

Right, and the box on my pantry label reads: Baker's German's Chocolate.
Looks delicious.
This looks delicious and moist! Many German Chocolate cakes that I've tasted are so dry, you need milk or coffee to wash them down.
