    Flying off the mountain would have been bad. Landing in the water would have been bad. Flying over the water but not off the mountain was as good as that one could get. What a crash.

      Randy is one racer I have a lot of respect for as there is no sugar coating the man speaks his mind and tells it strait. I have watched a lot of his driving and my passion is F1 but I also like most track racing and I will say Randy seems to be a natural driver who has a lot of experience to back up his natural feel.

      Can't tell from the video footage, but was he wearing a HANS during this? (I assume yes). If so that definitely helped him from getting hurt. A 1G forward hit like that is no joke on the neck

    A lesser driver would have still been trying to make the car turn and would have rolled the car over. Making that crash straight took some insane awareness.

      Usually when you start to understeer after overcooking a corner the best way to slow down is wheels straight if you want to have the best chance at saving it. It would have been second nature to him but it still shows what an amazing driver Randy is.

    • @MattJFilms
      @MattJFilms 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@seboest20 Good point! Much easier to slow a car that's got grip opposed to one sliding.

    • @jfbeam
      @jfbeam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Watch the video closely. He does "continue the turn", but at that speed the car is understeering ("pushing"). He kept the wheel turned enough to keep the car straight. (with enough seat time, it becomes a reflex. I've had autox'ers yell at my shuffle steering - how do I know where the wheels are pointed?!? (a) mental image, and (b) I'm more concerned with where the car is going than where the wheel is pointed. The wheel on my track car wasn't put on straight (years ago now) and we ran a 16hr endurance race without noticing it, until I went to put it on the trailer - had to look out the window to get the car straight.)
      [IMHO, the best way to condition that reflex is rallycross. Go where you never have any any grip to start with.]

    Probably the BEST place for an unintended high speed off road excursion at Pikes. One of my all time fav drivers. Great story teller, great explainer of his "seat of the pants" sensation and a superb driver. I raced MX for a few years, if you're not crashing you're not increasing your skill.

    This is such a huge moral boost for me right now. I recently crashed a car I love on a corner I've been through a million times. It was really late I was heading home after a drive with friends and just missed my braking point. I was sort of doubting whether it could be fixed, but seeing what they did with this GTR it's made me realise the damage isn't that bad. Stay positive about these things, learn, rebuild and move on!

    Best race I ever saw was the PPHC the last year before it was paved. Slept on the mountain at Devil's Playground, and I can attest: yes...you need O2 at that altitude.

    Moved out here to run it a year ago and oxygen is key. Especially on bikes

      That's a good pointer for even folks just driving their family car up to the summit...Wal-Mart out here sells canned Oxygen, reminds me of Spaceballs, everytime I'm in the Pharmacy section.

    I've always wonder if he was using O2 during that race/incident. Great story, a lot of good details, and very nice analysis. I became friends with Austin while he was repairing the post-crash GTR. Great guy.
    2 out of my 3 crashes in motorcycles have involved blind reducing radius turns.

    Randy has always reminded me of Astronaut John Young. Both have crazy amounts of experience in their respected fields. Both can very much put you in their shoes for any of their absolutely incredible feats of facing danger while having a blast and explaining it `every second of it.

    I did the pikes peak on ATV. This was 2006 on 1988 Honda 250r that had a 310 kit. It was a lot of fun. It’s hard to start a 9k go to 15k feet high on a 2 stroke. It was a lot of work to get the jetting in carb.

    Good insights. The oxygen angle is important. I have been involved with a Dakar rally team and we used oxygen even on liaison stages at 5000 metres. Tiredness will get you. It is an issue in Dakar with all the noise at night with people fixing cars and the next morning you may have to do a monster 500 km stage.
