Hitting the rev limiter on almost every gear shift... what a treat from such a legend! Mad Mike, one of the very few that are keeping the Mazda spirit alive!
thats a rotary thing, they get smoother the higher you rev them. Its hard to shift by feel because you don't get the feedback from vibration or power falling off as much, especially on the PP motors.
As a Huge Mazda supporter, I'm always happy with their achievements, 1400 rotary, twice the power of the 787b, man that is impressive and scary at the same time, congratulations mate, I hope you keep pushing Mazdas to their limits, and not only Rotaries, all Mazdas.
Wow, what a production. I didn't want this video to end either. The sound track gave me shivers and the cinematography needs to win awards. Mike is such a real person, doing unreal things. This makes it feel like you are on the journey with him.
From an Aussie ~ Go you mad Kiwis! That's awesome! I love how you see the finish from inside the car, and it looks a bit wild and crazy, but no real indication of why, but then you play the outside, and the suspension has wound up and the car is crossed up and the dynamics are in a different state, and the back wheels are two inches off the ground, and suddenly that rather frantic view from inside makes all the sense in the world. That was seriously hairy!
Massive congratulations Mike! You’ve come so far in your career from putting everything on the line building the og rx7 to now holding 2 records at Pikes Peak! Huge respect for you brother, showing everyone how hard work and dedication does pay off 🤙
I find it to be very difficult to judge speed and force in a video, but I think that fact that at 10:26 you can see that the air bubble in the tank of the hydraulic handbrake is basically at the front, rather than the top. I still can't imagine what it must have felt like, but holy moly...
Congratulations to Mad Mike and the team behind the rotary, great video and massive respect for getting out of your comfort zone and attempting and crushing Pikes Peak, hope to see you back next year in under 10 minutes.
808 on a line locker and a massive dream now smashing them every year better & better congrats bro to you your team & everyone behind the scenes 🇳🇿🇯🇵🇳🇿🇯🇵🇳🇿🇯🇵
In an ex uk mandate mechanic I've always loved the rotary engine ,and to put 4 into a mazda 3 and race it up pikes peak has put a huge smile on my face ....well done truly well done 😊😊😊😊😊😊
So cool to see another kiwi on top of the world, he’s given everything over the years so cool to see it all paying off big thanks to all his team and everyone that makes it all happen
Wow this is what you were talking about when we met you at Hampton Downs. Congrats on the records, proud to be Kiwi and thanks heaps for talking with my grandson and for letting us take the photos of you and him. He races your cars in his sim sessions. Thanks again. 💯🙂
Honestly, Kiwis are the most down to earth people on this planet (I am, obviously, Australian). They always remind me of what Aussies were like about 50 years ago. What a great effort, and from someone I see has no special prominence in car racing. Nice one!
Wonderfully produced piece, that I didn’t want to end! Fantastic driving! That car looks hairy. I’ve also never heard something smack the limiter so many times!
You might not remember me but I met you back in 2016 during FD Seattle at Evergreen speedway. You were all geared up, sitting in the Miata, getting into the groove. Been a fan of yours since 2011 or 2012, and I got my first car, a 1991 Mazda RX7 Convertible because of my love for your n/a 4 rotor FD RX7. Also got a $340 rotary tattoo because of my car, and you. Maybe one day I'll get to properly introduce myself to you, and shake your hand!
So glad for you and to see a current model Mazda 3 as a wild rotary powered rear wheel drive racing car! Amazing feat to all involved and those driving skilz 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Along with many others i have watched Mikes progression over the years, he is totally deserved of his World Record success at Pikes Peak i tip my hat to him, his team, Mazda & the sponsors! Well done!
What a treat for you and the fans alike. Great car concept and awesome run dude. Stoked for you and the team, so sick to see and hear a Mazda ripping it up the hill with the scream of 10,000 wasps (787B style) with a big turbo whistle too! Can't wait to see what you guys come up with for your next project. Cheers
what a crazy run, pushing the car on the edge of the limit, that 3 sounds great!!!, also 12:04, you can see how the sound delayed from that far distance
Mad Mike you are a Legend in your own right. Thanks for making me part of your world with all the exceptional footage and great camera angles, behind the scenes footage, and just the way you drive mate! Please put a sticker on the back that says: "Drive it like you stole it...." I will always treasure my little 1976 Mazda F1000 ute. I drive it everyday. Congratulations Mad Mike. You and the team deserve it mate 🤝🏻🏁🎌
without you the mazda heritage would have disappeared and many like me love the rotary engine thanks to you still remember madbul in 2009 when I see where you are today. Congratulations
I'm not being facetious when I say I teared up That car is bonkers and so are you In my opinion the Mazda 3 (BP 2019-2023) is the coolest looking hatch ever made and I hope that these records inspire more people to do crazy RWD conversions like this. Or even Mazda themselves putting out an actual hot hatch version (the AWD Turbo that the states got is cool, but not quite hot hatch material).
Nothing better than hittin your zenith in any sport! The rush is irreplaceable. Had that rush of 4 different experiences, and they were all stellar! Car's wasn't one of them, but this stuff you can't explain.
Thanks Mad Mike, that's not just a regular race you did there, that's a tribute to all of us petrolheads out there. And thanks again for existing and for all you've been giving us.
Respect man, brand new car in a totally different racing discipline you did soo well. Its not the drive there is a psychological aspect to it like you say wake up at 2am racing at 5:15am wtf 😅
Man how lucky is Mazda Japan to have a guy like Mike? Seriously the dude is a class act, super friendly, absolutely LOVES all cars but he chooses Mazda because they really do suit his driving style. I know so many people who have rotary cars and they don't belong in them. They lug the thing around and foul plugs, don't run a return line and WAAAY more pump and injector that you'll ever think you need. The fact is, you DO need that much fuel in a rotary. They're so difficult to tune if all you've ever tuned in ur life is piston engines man. I'm a tuner at the only shop with an all wheel drive dyno in Reno Nevada. The difference is literally night and day. On the mapping where a piston engine would like to be leaned up a bit, rotaries want ALL the fuel and visa versa. Literally if you understand haltechs fuel chart layout and looked at let's say a 20b side by side with a turbo k20 you'd be like.....what the FUUUUUUCK!?!?!? No bullshit a 20b burns more fuel than my single turbo and fuckin BUILT 2v 4.6 mod motor. Yes, Im the one man in the world who owns a 1998 mustang gt and kept the factory engine. Because 2v 4.6 are the most underrated engine there is. Period. A SOHC V8 with a block and head castings that robust just don't exist in any other platform. My car had 181,000 miles when I pulled it apart. I did a simple knockdown job on the heads, did trick flow stage 5 cams, titanium valves, springs, retainers, keepers, titanium rods, diamond billet pistons, had the stock crank blueprinted, balanced up to 12,000 rpm, lightened, and polished to a literal mirror shine. That well over 200,000 mile stock crank, block, and head castings have held 1100hp for almost 5 years. I did a dingleberry hone on the block. I'm dead fuckin serious this isn't bullshit I swear to God. I know they're a difficult engine to fit into some cars. But it's nowhere near as big as a coyote and you can find them for $600. I ran mine bone stock with a 78mm precision turbo for 2 years. It was still running exceptionally the only reason I did the build is because I won $37,000 playing roulette in Vegas. I had won $6,600 playing blackjack, then walked by a roulette table and looked at my girl. Shes like "Out half of it on 17 black I have a feeling right now." I shit you not it fuckin dropped on 17 black. Oh boy did I give her the best night of sex shes ever had in her entire life. She was still snoring when the maids came by at noon, hahahahaha!! Anyway, BUILD A 2V 4.6!!!!

Hitting the rev limiter on almost every gear shift... what a treat from such a legend! Mad Mike, one of the very few that are keeping the Mazda spirit alive!
Bashing that limiter like its a red headed step son 🤣 Bit of time left on the table too
In Japan and Australia it's still alive and always will be 🏁
Means he could drive even quicker. Hitting the limiter means no power for fraction of a second
thats a rotary thing, they get smoother the higher you rev them. Its hard to shift by feel because you don't get the feedback from vibration or power falling off as much, especially on the PP motors.
