  • Another (attempted!) hunting trip, this time to the familiar Oamaru Hut in Kaimanawa Forest Park. Over a two night stay I have a great time stalking some beautiful bush surrounds, though to no success.
    Music is my own

Impressive. It is awesome that you take such notice of the beautiful environment. You make great videos, and I was even more impressed when I saw "my own music". It looked like a great hike/hunt.

Thanks for such kind words. I'm really glad my enjoyment of all the little things shows through, especially still in the hunting context. Cheers for watching

Enjoy. If you're ever heading to Shutes make sure the Taruarau river levels are low, I recently got caught out.

@@KawekaJC I'd love to visit Shutes, but I've heard that river can be challenging, plus I'm 2WD - Comet Road?

Comet road has just redone, should be ok for most 2wd vehicles. Check the river flow at Kuripapango, I wouldn’t attempt it unless under 10 cumecs. I painted Shutes in 2021, special place.

I see, I go and buy my spare ribs and you go out and hunt yours 😅. Didn't realised you hunt, good score with the hunters and shared venison, that shot of you eating breakfast in the morning in the hut with the sun was great. Congratulations on your 1k plus subs by the way. Cheers Jesse.

Haha, that's the intention, but so far it's 'attempting' to hunt. Been good fun so far as a new hobby though. I liked that one too. Cheers Chris, thanks for watching

There are NO ads ever on my end since you reached 1K subscribers; I thought you were monetized at 1K subscribers. There were always ads before the 1K.

Thanks! I'm not monetised so in theory there shouldn't be ads on my videos, but I think TH-cam might be changing that and I still seem to see them. Do they pop up for you?

Hey Man, great effort. That's probably the most hunted spot in the North Island. When you first start out hunting, and especially if you are fit and keen, there is a tendency to "roam" and check all surrounding spots. The problem with this, particularly in dry conditions like you were in, is that you will be moving too fast to spot deer, or will spook them. Now that you've had a look, go back in and next time, spend some time in the spots you like, sitting, wind in your favour and aim to cover far less ground.

Hey thanks so much for the tips, I really appreciate it, coming into hunting fresh. It's hard to tell in which cases it's better to slow down or cover ground from what other hunters have said. My thinking was to cover ground but slow right down on fresh sign. Problem was I didn't find (what I thought to be) any super fresh stuff.
Glad to know I can slow it down and chill in some of these awesome spots. There's been some wild dogs on the loose in the area lately too, apparently doing a bit of havoc with the deer. Be interested to know if that translated to their habits while I was there too.
      Cheers again!

Yep, mates got back 3 weeks ago, they found 4 dead deer. Another party found 8. I use an indicating dog, so will cover ground until he finds wind/ground scent and hunt in. A different skill set to solo stalking. Think about getting a distance from the hut (30 minutes plus, then get in elevation and watch sunny faces. Be quiet, still and don't make a noise with your lunch. Once you start seeing deer (they are much harder to see in their winter coats), you'll click over time.

it's good in Late May. The Roar is over and there are a lot less people in the bush. Less pressure and the animals are hungry. Cold Still days...

Good spotting. Just a couple of very old ones that have since had better trips and videos overshadow them, so a bit of streamlining. It's been a while but I'm currently editing an epic 4 day trip that should be up in the next week - it will be awesome!

You can apply from 1000, so I just became eligible, but don't see much point at this stage!
