4 Days Solo Hiking in Kaweka Forest Park: Te Puia Loop

- An amazing 4 days of tramping in Kaweka Forest Park. I walk a loop from Te Puia, first staying at Makino Hut. The next day I walk to Ballard Hut via Mangaturutu and Venison Tops Huts. On day three I walk the main range to Middle Hill Hut, but go via Makahu Saddle, Kaweka Flats Biv and the historic Iron Whare. Finally my trip wraps up with natural hot pools at Mangatutu Campsite. Some gorgeous huts and incredible country.

Between 2010-2014 we did much tramping in Ecuador, ending many hikes at the Papallacta Hot Springs (always a delight) before returning to Quito (capitol) where we lived. Our hiking days are over, that's why we enjoy your tramping videos so much. You are our favorite hiker. Vivan los excursionistas!

What an epic looking trip! that third day looked like quite long haul on the maps. When I was a kid those hot pools where always magic to come back too.

The closest range to where I live are the Tararua's but given the somewhat uniformity of the ridges and scenery here I'd say the Kaweka's look like they may be a more interesting option. Amazing camera work too. I do a bit of hiking but can barely summon the enthusiasm to snap a few JPEG's so always appreciate those who can roll off actual film.

I tried to get to Kaweka J about 30 yrs. ago via Makino hut but didn't make it. But what a fantastic end to your Te Puia Loop trip- a bathe in a hot pool. However, you deserve it, mate . Just keep on tramping! Ol' Pete

What an epic hike! The weather looked fantastic. I can totally see that would be a difficult and treacherous hike in bad weather. The ups sounded really up, and really hard, esp after the iron whare. I noticed that you have fast legs and there was quite a lot of birdsong in the background - must be good predator control. Did you really do that hike without seeing another human? When did you do it? And the huts, I wondered if there was a discount on orange, or if they are that colour because the weather is often so bad it helps people find the hut when walking back from the toilet! Loved the variety of the tops, valleys and streams. I’m keen for a hat like yours. Do you remember where you got it from? Even the road walk at the end was nice. Nice to sit in fresh water after four days of walking! Very impressive solo effort. My next step, googling the distances and contemplate whether it is a feat I could replicate.
Cheers for watching and your comment! Yup, I wouldn't want something to go wrong on the tops in bad weather. There was a lot of climbing! But it always leaves me satisfied and grateful to be in good health to do them. I passed a few people but overall it was very quiet and I had all the huts to myself. It was just a couple of weeks ago.
Orange is my absolute favourite hut colour; another aspect I love about the Kaweka. I hear they're good for identification from the air, but then I wonder why more aren't orange nationwide.
The hat is an Outdoor Research Sun Runner and I love it. Got it from Bivouac, but on sale of course.
The distances weren't too immense. It was the steep country, and stopping all the time to appreciate it, that adds up the time. The great thing about that area is that huts and tracks are plenty so trips can easily be shortened or lengthened.

@@ReviloNZwalks Thanks, I think I worked it out. 42km with 3,300m of total ascent. The bit to Mangaturutu Hut looked like the worst for sure! You were lucky to have that pool to yourself!
I can see the legs had a good workout then! That was the biggest climb on my mind, but one foot at a time and it wasn't too bad...afterwards 😂
@@ReviloNZwalks Hey... hope it's ok to message with this. I was looking again at your route, trying to recreate it because I'm keen to try it before the end of summer. I couldn't see any actual track to Kaweka Flats Biv or Iron Whare... is there one? It may be the gaiagps software I'm using doesn't have them marked. And when you started, did you park at the hot pools, then follow the river, before turning left to Makino Hut? And which track did you finish on, what is Makahu Road to Makino Hut Track or was it Pinks Hut to Middle Hill Hut? What I'm trying to do is a similar track, but make sure I'm not biting off more than I can chew, so checking the distance and elevation of each leg. Maybe my last question, do you think it is sensible to take a tent? I suspect you might just walk to the next hut if one was full.
Hey all good. Yes that part is all tracked. It should show on your average topo map. Correct about hot pools to Te Puia Lodge and then up to Makino Hut. I just took the most direct track out to the road from Middle Hill Hut. It might just be called the Middle Hill Hut track but I'm unsure. I think a tent/shelter should always be carried for safety, even if you plan to walk to the next hut. Cheers
