    Hi Dave. Great content. Have hunted a lot of that country. I have a wife and 3 daughters so I now always use a Garmin In reach and check in with them every night once I get to camp. Saves any worry and if things don't go to plan like uncrossable rivers or extending routes, it's no hassle to send a text message. Has a plb function on it to.

    • @OutdoorsmanDave
      @OutdoorsmanDave  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Josh for your perspective. Do you carry a Plb too?

    • @joshjackson8266
      @joshjackson8266 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OutdoorsmanDave I don't carry a plb Dave. My reason being is that if I am well enough to pull out my plb I am well enough to send a text on the InReach, aside from the InReach already having a plb function. Aside from this there are some benefits
      #1 you can communicate with loved ones, not just press a sos button or plb. Couldn't imagine the stress it would cause my family if they just got a call from the police or SAR saying that my plb had been activated and that's it. Maybe I don't need a chopper. I may have twisted an ankle and just need someone to help carry my pack out. Maybe I get a stomach bug and have enough supplies to see me through the worst of it and I can let the family know what's going on and where to pick me up. Maybe the car battery dies and I'm out of reception.... The list goes on
      #2 you can communicate with SAR. Maybe you got lost off track or have to move locations due to weather. You can update them on your location and condition. Also messaging for help may in some cases be able to get the police or SAR into action quicker if the emergency plb center is not as fast as it should be. Maybe my wife can send a few mates in to keep me comfortable.
      #3 weather updates
      #4 as long as my device is turned on my wife can log in to the Garmin app at home and track my current position live! It also send your coordinates with every message. That way if I am truly incapacitated they rescue teams know where to start based off my last message.
      As a family man this device is my most valuable tool and gives my wife and kids enormous peace of mind.

      You make some very compelling points. I see there are mini, mini 2, & normal, what’s the difference, why did you choose the one you have please?

    • @joshjackson8266
      @joshjackson8266 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OutdoorsmanDave I got the normal InReach explorer+ as the mini wasn't on the market yet. The InReach mini would be a better option as they are lighter and the battery lasts just as long from all accounts. Besides, it's very slow to text from the InReach device itself as you have to select each character and press enter. That's why I just connect my phone to the unit and do everything via the Garmin app on the phone. Only need the InReach bluetooth to connect to your phone. Garmin obviously caught on to how long it takes to send messages directly from the device and realized that most people use the phone to connect to it anyway - hence they released the mini. You can still do some basic functions on the mini directly but it's more designed to be connected to the phone. If I had the money I'd get a mini in a heartbeat, soley for the weight saving and portability. It's a nice small device that you can put on a clip and attach to your pack.

    @evangoff4363 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bound to have been suggested Dave but the Garmin inReach is a fantastic device. Never be overdue again as you can satellite text from virtually anywhere and let others know what you are up to. The only downside is people can contact you, but only of you choose to turn it on.

      @@OutdoorsmanDave I've enjoyed all of it, and the first 2-3 days looked pretty full on with all those ups and downs. Jokes aside, I'm sure it was not easy for your wife wondering what had happened to you when you didn't show up as planned. I'm guessing you were quite concerned, too. I'm sorry to hear it wasn't a happy ending, although one could argue that here you are, sharing the experience with us all. I see there's comments below re: the InReach, and it is so awesome that we have that tech available nowadays. I'd love to hear from you what your key lessons are from this adventure. What would/could you have done differently with the benefit of hindsight?

    I have a long history of extended trips. 2 weeks to 5 months. It has been hard on my bride. I'm sorry your girl is worried and you know you will be fine but she doesn't. It goes with the territory. An outdoor lifestyle doesn't always bring peace of mind to those we love. I think it was brave of you to publish this and I thank you.

      Kia ora, look I have respect for your forage content channel, I follow and support you and there’s room for us both to not get offside. Food as I’m sure you know (like the 6-8kg of salt or the rusty expired tin of stew at Harkness) iis predominantly left because people don’t wish to carry or chopper it out. If it’s some comfort to your obvious concern, I was pushing out an extra day and the tough big days (25-30km) were taking it out of body reserves, so it was like a minor survival situation. As we are both creators, let’s not get offside, but instead support and inspire others to do what you and I love. Nga mihi 🙏

    Great video Dave. I have sympathy for your daughter as my wife and daughter have always worried themselves when I go bush. I have been tramping for over 25 years. So on my last trip 2 weeks ago (to Mount Richmond Forest Park) they bought me the Garmin inReach Mini 2. I know what you mean about just communing with nature and leaving the outside world behind. But sending a check in message at the end of each day only takes a minute and gives loved ones peace of mind. It also helps them know that if I do get in trouble I just need to push the SOS button and help is on its way. This provides them with a huge amount of comfort. It is also great for navigation you just set it and forget it and if you go 20 metres off trail it will let you know with a little chirp. Keep on "doing you" Dave the honesty is what keeps me watching.

      Hey George, my wife (she’s flattered btw) was doing a video diary to our kids hence saying dad. • @GeorgeBeck100
      @GeorgeBeck100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OutdoorsmanDave Oh that makes sense now 😂 Freedom safety plan. That only allows 10 texts but we didn't use them as the free check ones were all they needed. Also did not send tracking info a that costs extra on this plan. I don't tramp in the winter months so will cancel subscription for a few months. I did make a subtle hint that your lovely wife would buy it for her own place of mind 😉

    • @OutdoorsmanDave

      My wife said I must tell you that I can buy one whenever I want. Would you carry both Plb and inreach?

    • @GeorgeBeck100
      @GeorgeBeck100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OutdoorsmanDave Yay she'll be happy !!!!!! The inreach is a PLB, you just press the SOS button. But, the thing is you pay a subscription (min $25 pm) so if you already have a Plb then maybe use that for overnighter and for longer tramps i.e 2-4 days then use the in-reach or just pay the monthly sub. You can pause anytime so I guess you could film & tramp 1 month and edit and upload the next or something like that.
