I think it was better than most. Using Bateaux Mouches for the athletes was an excellent idea. There are always some parts of the opening ceremony that I don't find interesting, such as the homage to Louis Vuitton. I appreciated the audacity to have a singing, decapitated Marie Antoinette. And as an American who is neither easily misled nor offended, I'm embarrassed by the reactions in this country. Some American Christians have a martyr complex, which leads them to see persecution everywhere. I admire France for having a belief similar to the U.S. that "church and state" should be kept separate. I am an atheist or agnostic, depending upon how the words are defined, so I likely feel more strongly than religious Americans that people should keep their religious faith private. But I don't believe that my opinion should be the law. If I may be so bold, I don't agree with French laws that prohibit wearing the hijab and other items in public (I would not allow clothing that covers the face). I think this reflects poorly upon liberal, democratic France. Borrowing a quote from someone else, "liberals should not be so tolerant that they tolerate intolerance." My country has a far longer list of laws that I consider contrary to our stated values.

This is what i wanted! A French man or woman reacting to this. I have to say that you Frenchies should be very proud of Gojira. They are TOP FUCKING TIER.
Gojira and Marina Viotti killed it. I am deeply hoping for a studio cut, however unlikely. The blending of Gojiras heavy crunchy deep end with the etherial operatic parts and Madam Viotti angelic voice weaving through was simply exquisite! Bravo!
@@ToonStory-fh4gn Never has metal been so well represented on such a stage. Metal bands can play before nearly a million, but nothing like this. Thanks to Gojira and to Paris and France. What a show all gave.
From what I understand the image of the torch bearer looking like an Assassin's Creed character was a nod to Ubisoft who shared all of the detailed 3d scans and donated a good chunk of money to help rebuild Notre Dame after the 2019 fire.
Another lunchtime treat for me! I as the resident curmudgeon here i must say i approve 😊, i need to watch again because that beautiful building caught my eye, wow! I have not seen this, i need to get put more, as an American i must admire the gleam in your eye and glowing smile when talking about your govt. Seeing taking note of what can happen if they forget what happens when leaders forget us😊, remember always better to ask forgiveness than permission haha.have a fun and safe weekend everyone, thank you for the video and commentary
Thank you! I thought there were some very beautiful images throughout the ceremony and the city of Paris was well showcased :) And yeah the "wink wink" to our president was pure gold 😅
Also as an American I completely concur 😂. Enjoyed this reaction and loved the symbolic & poltical nature of this whole thing! I felt it was very wise and Crucial for the world to see and remember. We mustn't be afraid to fight back for the crazy trumoil in the world. The Olympics are for bringing together all people for competition, compassion & understanding.. thank you for the reaction as well as thoughts and Gojira/Marina for a beautiful performance & Olympics for the creative decision ✨️ 👏
I had a better understanding that our American founding fathers who crafted "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" were tremendously influenced by the time they spent in France--"Liberty, Egalite, Fraternite"
To do justice to the founding fathers, I think that the American Revolution greatly IMMENSELY inspired the ideals of the French Revolution. Let's celebrate our common heritage!
I felt the entire opening ceremony, especially THIS PART was magnificent. I'm an American from California, and I was lucky enough to live alone in Paris when I was just 18. The art, history and culture, changed me, expanded my perception, made me think, and directly altered me throughout my life. I feel fortunate that I was able to have that education at a young age. The Olympic opening was the most French thing I've seen, it was brilliant. Merci.
Thank you very much, I'm very touched when I read the emotions this ceremony gave to people. I lived in Paris for ten years, and perhaps like you, I found everything I loved about Paris in this ceremony. Thank you, all my friendship from France :)
I watched the Olympic opening by coincidence. I thought its like the superbowl shows in US maybe. Then this French metal band I had never heard of before performed in this super cool setting (I've been a metal fan since I was a teenager JP and Halford). I did not know either that there is such a huge castle in Paris out of medieval times or like out of this movie with Jean Reno, Crimson Rivers I think was the title. I understood its about the revolution and the beheadings of your nobility. I thought, wow, these creators of the show really did a great job. And that France is a great nation indeed, a power that must be reckoned with. I doubt any other country could top this. - Maybe you attracted now more ppl to come visit Paris when you are so overrun already and the singer of Gorija is so damn good looking, too. 🥰I felt very happy that France presented itself and thus Europe in this remarkable way and I felt that the Olympic games will be therefore very exciting to watch for ppl from allover the world.
Merci Beaucoup! Thank you thank you for such a meticulous explanation of this epic performance. I’m a metal head and a lover of French history myself. Can’t understand why dimwits just cannot see how artistically genius this is. Love from Canada!
And what was artistic genius about it? They murdered their own monarchs and you live in a common wealth so I find it ironic you call people dimwits when they don't agree with it. Imagine if America did a representation of that for king of England. Likely would be a lot upset people.
@@michelleg7 keep entertaining yourself. You got nothing better to do it’s obvious . You know what we call self proclaiming Einsteins like yourselves? TROLL.
The man with the torch is actually Arnos from Assassin's Creed series. He was portrayed as doing parkour with the torch throughout Paris as a nod to Ubisoft the French video game publisher that makes the Assassin's Creed games.
To think in 2012 we where showing off sheep in green rolling hills and shooting Eric idle(monte python) from a cannon..should of just had the whole thing at Tower Hill..😂😂 pretty grim..
It was such a phenomenal performance! I love Gojira and for them to have such a platform and play for the opening ceremony was incredible. They done the metal community and France proud ❤
Tu m'as tué...
Hello from Germany. This part of the ceremony absolutely nailed it. I´m not very much into events like the Olympics but thx to the YT-algorhythm I could check this one out. Masterclass in every department. The band (I´m more into Punk but know Gojira since their Mars to Sirius record and respect them very much...especially for their authenticity and their lyrix), the opera-singer, the choir, the links to past revolutionary times and so on. The torch bearer really is a link to Assassin´s Creed i guess (The Publisher/developer are located in France). And starting the whole thing with beheaded Marie Antoinette singing a revolution song - gorgeous. All in all to me that is a piece of art. Period.
Hey! Sorry for my late answer and thank you for this message. The whole stuff is a masterclass, and I was so proud for the boldness of this performance. Greetings dear neighbour :)
If I had to choose a favorite moment, it would definitely be the opera singer raising her fist in the air, a direct reference to the second revolution France had a century later, the Paris Commune 🚩🔥✊ Viva la revolutión
@@geologist5838 yes by the way Louise Michel - a french woman, figure of the Commune - was honoured during the ceremony, amongst 10 important women in french history
Love that! Missed it unfortunately, but so happy to see that the Paris Commune was mentioned. Such an important part of History in general, not just for France
I don't generally watch Opening Ceremonies at the Olympics as they are generally "puff pieces" for the country hosting. It seemed the ceremony was a bit all over the place literally at various places on the Seine so no audience members got to see all or a majority of the ceremony. I still have no idea how the ceremony cohered This was from the "Liberté" section presumably there were "Equalité" and "Fraternité" sections but was the focus on the revolutionary part of Paris' history or was there more?
@@ToonStory-fh4gn I figured there would more to the opening ceremony than just liberté, equalité et fraternité though it has been hard to find out the "programme" of the events.
Interesting take, I didnt know about the hair "bothering" the guillotine. Regarding the Assassing Creed guy, I assumed it was an aristocrat/noble, which is a strong image, him looking down at the conciergerie falling apart, before the golden boat of liberty floats in.
As a Canadian I didn't understand why your prime minister would be hated so much and potentially feel threatened by this after looking him up, then I remembered president and prime minister are not the same thing there lol. Also this performance was amazing!
@ToonStory-fh4gn I am from the USA and I love France. Paris last hosted the Olympics in 1924. One hundred years later, the city welcomed the world’s top athletes again. 😃
I have no problem that you're letting your current president, or mine, know that France has a history of fighting tyranny. I gotta tell you that I did not watch it but the bits I have seen on the news - well, I would have gone a diffetent way with those!
Merci beaucoup !!!
I don't want to disappoint you but apparently Macron has given his approval for every steps of the ceremony. So he knew about that. But you're right there is a lot of political messages and even the president cannot ignore the history of France. It was also a lot against far right parties, I believe. Désolé, j'ai écrit en anglais :)
I figured the Assassin's Creed thing was from Assassins Creed: Unity which is set during the French Revolution, but it is widely criticized for being incredibly inaccurate and one of the worst AC games. I personally liked it but I like anything from that period in History, and just played it as.. you know a video game. It's not a history book 😂
Well tbh I never played it but the controversy in France was huge! I only played AC Odyssey and Valhalla, I have nothing to complain about in terms of historicity: it's as you said video games! I might give Unity a try someday
Have to say I found it all a bit disjointed, there was no focal point which made it seem like those involved were performing to no one in particular. Don't really have a problem with this particular element - it's very much part of your history for God's sake and not to mention it would have seemed a bit odd.
My 7 year old daughter has been looking forward to watching the Olympics. She absolutely loves gymnastics & swimming, she's a very athletic little girl. We are Catholic. However, I admit that we don't go to mass as much as we should. I walked in the media room, whilst my daughter was watching the opening ceremony. I was in shock when I saw the last supper skit, mocking The Last Supper painting by Leonardo Da Vinci. Then I exploded when I saw an innocent child in the skit, surrounded by sexual immortality. Then my daughter & I watched a man with his testicles hanging out. I was so shocked & disgusted that I demanded that my daughter turn off the TV & I ordered her not to watch the Olympics this year. I am a political liberal, in the sense that I want society to always progress to become better. I also believe in adults' ability to become whatever they want, but leave the children alone. Let them enjoy being young & innocent whilst being protected physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I understand art & creativity, but this was in horrible taste & made millions of Christians angry. I am not an isolated American. I lived in Edinburgh, Scotland for 2 years & traveled throughout Europe & Asia. I know many Europeans that were outraged by the opening ceremony, with many stating that of all the times to mock any major religion, now is a horrible sentiment, because of political & social divisions that exist right now in Europe.
@rickwagner- I'm unsure if she was watching live or a post opening ceremony recap, but that was the absolute most shocking moment in television in my life. My daughter is my youngest & the only girl in my family. I would be upset if one of my sons watched it, but because I'm extremely protective of my baby girl, I am very angry.
There’s a subset of Christians who, when faced with something they don’t understand, instinctually find a way to turn themselves into a victim. My suggestion is to stop going through life like everyone is out to get you. Most of the outrage in this world is manufactured by people who have a vested interest in keeping you angry. Things that you find strange (or even tasteless) are almost never a personal attack. If you feel attacked, it’s probably because someone lied to you about what actually happened. In this case, someone lied to you to make you think it was about the last supper when it was about Dionysus. Don’t take the bait. Think for yourself.
Thanks for your comment. Edinburgh is such a nice city! I sincerely believe that it wasn't the intention to offend anyone, but the Artistic Director made some strong choices that he carried through to the end. Showing drag queens, for example, is a way of highlighting people who are invisible all year round, and it's also in the spirit of the Olympic Games to be open to all talents. As for the 'nut gate', it's really a hole in his tights, and I think that poor dancer Germain Louvet is more of a victim in this affair than anything else (it won't help his career for sure). I don't know what you're referring to about the child surrounded by sexual immortality? For the last supper, or whatever that scene represented, the singer sang a beautiful anti-war song. Having said that, if you felt offended and indignant by what you saw... Well I respect that and I can't argue against this. I know it shocked some people, and gave a lot of joy to others. All my friendship from France
my country or specifically my province in my country has a motto too involving boats,it translates to "a safe harbour for all" the logo is a boat between two forts
In today’s money Tokyo cost over 15 billion. The Olympic Committee has made it very, very clear that they are no longer allowing countries to build new stadiums, new sports centers, even new presentation arena’s just for the Olympic Games. If you look at London, and Rio there are hundreds of large abandoned buildings that are now decaying. The next Summer Olympics is in LA, we were just told that the canoe event can no longer be built- we have to find another city within the US to host that event. The next Winter Olympics are in Italy, they do not have a bobsled or luge track. They were told to put out a request for use. The bobsled and luge events will now be held in NY. Things have to change, the system that everyone is used to was literally setting money on fire. There are many countries, The US included, that won’t participate without these changes being implemented.
Nope not a fan of what went down, France has like 2000 years of history and they chose that?! Did anyone forget about Napoleon and everything else that went down after or what? Let's put poor Marie at the front for that?! That woman was as much a victim as the other innocent people sent to the Guillotine, so much accused against her and yet she didn't do a lot of what they accused her of. The other part was the the dioynsus theme omg it was very inappropriate for the opening of the olympics and for it to be so heavy politcally I won't be surprised if France won't be hosting it again anytime soon in the future after that fiasco.
I'm disappointed that you seem to have enjoyed it, to me it was a Satanic nightmare and if I was French I would be ashamed that this represented the French celebration of the Olympic games ...a Sporting event, I will not watch one minute of the games and I dread what the closing ceremony will involve, the whole World has gone mad
I'm so sick of this argument. Not everything has to cater to your religion. The Olympics originated in a pagan society, ancient Greece. Even so, the modern games are international, meaning you may see things like other religions and their practices on display. Or maybe (gasp) people of different faiths and cultures working together! What if it was held in India and the Hindu gods were represented in the opening ceremony? The host country gets to celebrate how they want. Don't watch if you don't want to, but stop telling other people what they should enjoy.
@@ToonStory-fh4gn They probably refer to the alleged Last Supper drag queen set piece. I would point out: 1. The set piece is not based on the Last Supper painting by Leonardo directly but an admittedly quite outre piece BASED on that painting. 2. The Last Supper panting is a revered PAINTING. Not the Bible . 3. Leonardo was a gay man who painted a brilliant interpretation of the Last Supper events from the Bible. Others can and do paint those same events in different ways. 4. I think France can be seen as a country that makes it a national effort to rebuild the cathedral of Notre Dame after it's tragic fire AND a country that values the freedom for artists to produce art that is challenging even shocking even maybe offensive. Is the US that different? I as one American...hope not Wasn't Gojira originally using the name "Godzilla"? I was afraid the ceremony would also invoke the tired old ghosts of rock and roll Johnny Hallyday and comic obsession Jerry Lewis. Dieu merci pour ça. Just kidding Frenchy. Great video and thank you for posting it.
@@JeffTaylor-tr7my Thanks mate, I agree with everything you said. Also, the artistic director of the ceremony said he was inspired by Dionysus and wanted to represent a pagan festival linked to the God Olympus (in relation to the Olympic Games). I would add that his overall intention was to represent everything that makes up France in its diversity, its freedom and its love of its heritage. For many people, this ceremony was an opportunity to come together as a people, and it brought a great deal of joy and love (much needed this times) Exactly for Gojira / Godzilla! And for Johnny, instead we resurrected Céline Dion and had her sing on the Eiffel Tower!
She said she was inspired by "Feast of the Gods" only after she started to receive backlash. Originally, she very much she said it was to represent "The Last Supper." This is further born out if you place the image of the performance next to the images of both "The Last Supper" and "Feast of the Gods". The number of people, their placement, their posing is exactly like "The Last Supper." The only thing it has in common with "Feast of the Gods" is that there are multiple people in it. That said, given the condition of the Seine before the Olympics, showing the Pale Horse (which is ridden by Death) galloping along its bank was not a good artistic decision.
What did you think of the ceremony?
I think it was better than most. Using Bateaux Mouches for the athletes was an excellent idea. There are always some parts of the opening ceremony that I don't find interesting, such as the homage to Louis Vuitton. I appreciated the audacity to have a singing, decapitated Marie Antoinette. And as an American who is neither easily misled nor offended, I'm embarrassed by the reactions in this country. Some American Christians have a martyr complex, which leads them to see persecution everywhere.

@@ToonStory-fh4gn Never has metal been so well represented on such a stage. Metal bands can play before nearly a million, but nothing like this. Thanks to Gojira and to Paris and France. What a show all gave.
Love it. Stunning music, magnificent presentation. I like the contrast between classic and metal. Very stylish.
Metal music has a lot of influences from classical music, and the two styles blend very naturally. Thank you!
I very much appreciated your comments and insights. I love this performance and all of the symbolism. Thank you.
@@michellemiles9966 thank you, glad you enjoyed it
From what I understand the image of the torch bearer looking like an Assassin's Creed character was a nod to Ubisoft who shared all of the detailed 3d scans and donated a good chunk of money to help rebuild Notre Dame after the 2019 fire.
That's right, it's a direct reference to Assassin's Creed, from France's most famous video game studio
Yes that sounds logical, thank you!
I do think this no face character is a fusion between Assassin's Creed and Quasimodo.
This is a huge moment for Heavy Metal music, huge! The times, the perspective, the subject...metal is always timely
This is the first time I've seen a performance by a metal band (a French one at that) with this level of magnitude on a global scale. Historical!
Vive la france, c'etait genial !

Merci.
Can you tell that to your fellow americans, and not be so uptight about the whole thing?

Amazing performance but ffs commentators need to be more respectful and learn to STFU during a live performance.
I was saying the exact same thing, but then I remembered I was commenting myself...
Metal is the best way to showcase Revolution! Vive La France.
Hell yeah!

All the best dear neighbour :)
I don't generally watch Opening Ceremonies at the Olympics
as they are generally "puff pieces" for the country hosting.
It seemed the ceremony was a bit all over the place
literally at various places on the Seine so no audience members
got to see all or a majority of the ceremony.
I still have no idea how the ceremony cohered
This was from the "Liberté" section presumably
there were "Equalité" and "Fraternité" sections
but was the focus on the revolutionary part of Paris' history
or was there more?
Thank you, there was more. For example the ceremony honoured 10 french women that were very important in France's history.
@@ToonStory-fh4gn
I figured there would more to the opening ceremony than just liberté, equalité et fraternité
though it has been hard to find out the "programme" of the events.
Vive la republique. Si seulement le Royaume-Uni, etc. Mon Dieu, je suis devenu si amer.
Merci !
Assassins Creed was my first association for the dude carrying the torch, glad I am not the only one!
Well done!
Interesting take, I didnt know about the hair "bothering" the guillotine. Regarding the Assassing Creed guy, I assumed it was an aristocrat/noble, which is a strong image, him looking down at the conciergerie falling apart, before the golden boat of liberty floats in. Anyway, best ceremony Ive seen live, vive la france.
Thank you 😀
Yes, it was the guy from Assassin's Creed because Ubisoft est Francais :D
That's a bonne explication 😀

The Last Supper wasn't part of the Olympic opening ceremonies.
You're getting it confused with a depiction of Dionysus.
@@nancypatterson2215 Still not The Last Supper.

Turned it off after about a hour and 15 mins worst thing I seen Tokyo was better than Paris crazy to believe it cost over 8 billion
I've never seen it, I'll have to go and have a look thanks!
Seen it all. Def could understand why conservatives were so triggered. Loved it
In today’s money Tokyo cost over 15 billion.
Lol you messed up. It got better and better the longer it went on
And? Who cares?
Nope not a fan of what went down, France has like 2000 years of history and they chose that?! Did anyone forget about Napoleon and everything else that went down after or what? Let's put poor Marie at the front for that?! That woman was as much a victim as the other innocent people sent to the Guillotine, so much accused against her and yet she didn't do a lot of what they accused her of. The other part was the the dioynsus theme omg it was very inappropriate for the opening of the olympics and for it to be so heavy politcally I won't be surprised if France won't be hosting it again anytime soon in the future after that fiasco.
"La pauvre Marie..." Non mais je rêve...

Satanic how?
@@ToonStory-fh4gn They probably refer to the alleged Last Supper drag queen set piece. I would point out:
I as one American...hope not
Wasn't Gojira originally using the name "Godzilla"?
For many people, this ceremony was an opportunity to come together as a people, and it brought a great deal of joy and love (much needed this times)
Exactly for Gojira / Godzilla!
And for Johnny, instead we resurrected Céline Dion and had her sing on the Eiffel Tower!
She said she was inspired by "Feast of the Gods" only after she started to receive backlash.
Originally, she very much she said it was to represent "The Last Supper."
This is further born out if you place the image of the performance next to the images of both "The Last Supper" and "Feast of the Gods".
