Sometimes when you ask someone kind of oblivious to a genre to play that genre they make such creative stuff. They're not bound by the rules so their exploratory moves goes down untread paths. Honestly so many things metal drummers could pick up from his inventions here.
@@vuguroth I assume it's probably since if you're a high-level drummer for a big popular act, you have to have had session experience, like a ton And through that you build a great repertoire of techniques, styles etc. The drumming might sound simple in Country but the musicians are not as an example It's intimidating if you're a musician starting out since the industry is so fickle and exclusive
I´ve heard of Luke Combs, never heard of Jake Sommers. I like Jake Sommers better than Luke Combs. Mad respect to Jake for this preformance! Would fucking love to see Jake learn this song and play it along side with Mario at a Gojira show!
No doubt that Jake is going to start listening to them. He identified the creativity right off the bat, bobbing the head to the beat. I bet Gojira just made a new fan!
I love it when a drummer I've never heard of plays a song I've never heard. I absolutely ADORE getting to experience it with someone and getting into TWO different new groups to rock to.
Same. Jake is definitely great. I don’t listen to country, I have no idea who this guy Luke Holmes is but he looks to be one of those huge mega star country singers I have no idea at all about XD. But thanks to Jake I’ll now start listening to him.
I appreciate Drumeo so much because I’ve been exposed to so many more artists, bands and drummers through these videos. Mastodon, Tool, Gojira, Luke Combs, etc. Exactly what these videos should do.
These are so awesome! Someone should do a vocal equivalent where a singer hasn’t heard a song and hears the backing track and gets the lyrics but make up the melody of the lyrics themselves.
Beyond seeing how creative these musicians are in experimenting across genres with tunes they’ve never heard, I appreciate that their admiration for their fellow drummers trickles down to the viewer. What this series does well is that it imparts the importance of listening to numerous genres, especially when learning an instrument, to learn the nuances and many styles to play. It’s cool seeing these drummers get turned on to new music but what tickles me more is the thought that viewers who are maybe stuck in their own genres get exposure beyond their own comfort or interest level and see musicians representative of their own tastes absolutely slay something outside their wheelhouse. This series fosters curiosity in and respect for all the genres out there. I’ve never been disappointed or bored by a single one of these videos. Please keep them going!
I love how in the final take you could see the creative juices start flowing as he really started to feel the song, I bet he went home and started playing some more Gojira
I applaud every drummer willing to step up to this sort of challenge with cameras rolling. The dissection of some of the greatest drums going, is not only brave but beautiful as well. A salute to Jake for running headfirst into this challenging beast of a tune. Bravo and kudos.
Those tasty ride accents were so dope. In the first take they reminded me of stuff Gene Hoglan would do on a Death song. That last fill on the final take was murderous. It also looks like he didn't have a double kick either. This man knows his shit and did a fantastic job. Please keep this show going forever.
funny you mentioned Gene Hoglan. I immediately drew a comparison to strapping young lad, another band he was a part of that was headed by Devin Townsend.
im a metal guy and mostly played in grind and hardcore bands but man, i played in a country band several years ago and it was the most fun i had playing. the simplicity really lets you open up for dynamics
I think people forget how country drums are very rock and roll. It's the guitars and vocals that are so different from metal. Gojira is tough because of the timing changes. I think if it had been something a little more straightforward, like Vader or In Flames, he would have nailed it in 1 take.
I love how honest this guy is..... How diverse the song to his genre and that too mario's.... He gave his best performance and gave a honest review about it.... Love ur passion brother ...
What an intimidating song! He absolutely nailed it. My favourite part of this series is how these drummers can take something completely out of their comfort zone and make it record ready in a morning. True masters
You can hear how his experience performing live influences his approach. He was leaving space for the other performers in the first take. I like that. I also loved seeing how much fun he was having.
Dude, the speed of pick up of the song is awesome - really good take up of the changes on the second take and hit all his cues - this guy is worth evry penny as a session musician at the very - very ast - amazing job on a challenging song.
The groove got me, I was moving my head along at the moment you mentioned. I'm so impressed by this cover, the song is so hard to even grasp, yet this drum cover is extremely good.
stranded is an absolute beast of a song as is, so seeing a drummer completely outside of the metal realm to take on the challenge is super cool! it's fascinating watching his expressions change between grooving and focusing as he works through the funky time changes
I'm a bassist and got into this series with Larnell Lewis playing Metallica and immediately subscribing was one of the best decisions I ever made. I love seeing the notification for these. Great work, Mr Sommers. And great work, Drumeo.
That was the first Drumeo video I saw, too. Just the idea of getting a drummer playing something from a different genre that they hadn't heard before was enough to get me subbed. And they've just got better and better. Even got me watching some Larnel Lewis and Snarky Puppies videos and that's not a genre I go for.
Finding a good drummer is usually the hardest part of forming a band. The fact that y'all are trying to produce more drummers for the world is awesome!
These videos are dope, showing metal drummers other stuff was cool but it’s even cooler seeing country and jazz drummers playing complex metal stuff. I’d never thought “hey, the drummer for like combs is pretty damn good”, but now I got a whole new pov of his musicianship, the artist, and the genre as a whole.
This is beyond awesome for you to go outside you're comfort zone. You'll grow as an artist for your attempt to play other genres. You killed it brother! 🔥
I need to listen to Gojira a lot more. This is a great track. Also, it's pretty cool to briefly see Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" is finding a lot of new ears in the Country music fandom (at least that's what it sounded like JC was playing live in the cutaway clips).
Playing a Gojira song in the drums: Stranded 😊 Art of Dying 💀 Jake did a great job here! Mario Duplantier the Gojira drummer is one of the most talented drummers out there, he is a straight out robot, he dont make mistakes, just saw them live 2 months ago, what an experience, it is the same listening to them live than studio version, what a drummer experience!
I seen them live in August last year. And even though it was an outdoor venue. Hands down the loudest concert I’ve ever attended. And a straight up surreal experience. Would hands down see them again!!!
Technically not VERY difficult on the drums, but for someone to come up with the drums from a first listen, especially if you're not familiar with Gojira... It's really difficult! Kudos for the cool fills and the tight ending! Good job!
This series is honestly so cool, it's awesome to see everyone's different takes on songs that we seem to already know so well, and to hear how they sound with different ideas. It's also great to see people out of their comfort zone. I wanna see someone try meshuggah someday haha
I've never listened to Gojira, despite how popular they are in the scene, so I have no frame of reference on what their drummer's style is, but I have to say - Jake did a great job! It's so far removed from his normal comfort zone and style, but he filled the song in nicely and really found his stride in the end. Impressive skill that he doesn't normally get to showcase.
That was cool to see him figuring out the song while he was playing it. The second half of his last take was pretty special. Some incredible drummers in the country/ worship scene.
For those that don’t know, Gojira is a band that uses lots of complex polyrhythms. This song was no exception…it’s just that he picked out the steady 4/4 back beat, changing the whole feel in a pretty cool way
Mad respect for crossing the genre divide and doing a solid job. I could see the confidence building throughout the second take... starting to feel the groove and taking some risks on the fills. Awesome watching these videos.
I really like how as the song progressed he got more confident to add his own finesse to it, such great creativity in his playing and an awesome job creating so much feel! Also his drum tones are freaking amazing
Mad effort for someone whos style is completely opposite normally, doesn't know this song to be from Gojira, and still does an excellent job for the first time hearing the song, big Gojira fan myself, well done
Might be one of my favorites from this series. Bravo! This is a beast to try and figure out with lack of cues and (verse 2) where guitar isn’t present and bass and ambience is the only thing guiding you with vocal phrases every few measures.. I am highly impressed at your take on this song having never heard it! Luke Combs is lucky to have you in his band!
I fucking love this series so much! Having drummers from all sorts of different backgrounds playing music they don't usually play. So badass. Please don't kill this series! 🤘🏻

Honestly so many things metal drummers could pick up from his inventions here.
@@vuguroth I assume it's probably since if you're a high-level drummer for a big popular act, you have to have had session experience, like a ton
And through that you build a great repertoire of techniques, styles etc.
The drumming might sound simple in Country but the musicians are not as an example
It's intimidating if you're a musician starting out since the industry is so fickle and exclusive
Country music pays more...far more...
I´ve heard of Luke Combs, never heard of Jake Sommers.
I like Jake Sommers better than Luke Combs.
Mad respect to Jake for this preformance! Would fucking love to see Jake learn this song and play it along side with Mario at a Gojira show!
Im mad you put "luke combs drummer" and not his name
Right? I wish they would give them a little more backstory for people who aren't familiar with their name
💯
Yep, duck Luke combs
Exactly, give the guy some cred on his name
💯
No doubt that Jake is going to start listening to them. He identified the creativity right off the bat, bobbing the head to the beat. I bet Gojira just made a new fan!
I think Jake made a few new fans here too!
@@johnjjohningtoniii2439 You bet!
Heck yes! Such a cool series.
@@rodrigozamoI believe the film Boogie Nights was about Luke Holmes.
I am also a big advocate of listening different genres and practicing even if that’s not your thing
Most eloquently said.
You have no idea internet 'musician'
I love how in the final take you could see the creative juices start flowing as he really started to feel the song, I bet he went home and started playing some more Gojira
Massive massive respect to this guy. Drums sounded lush and he nailed a groove that worked beautifully ✔️
I applaud every drummer willing to step up to this sort of challenge with cameras rolling. The dissection of some of the greatest drums going, is not only brave but beautiful as well. A salute to Jake for running headfirst into this challenging beast of a tune. Bravo and kudos.
I was so impressed by this. Just the facility with the instrument to flow through that on the spot is amazing.
its cool how all these drummers can add thier unique flavour to these songs.
Oh come on, which part exactly was the unique one? Dude rode basic 4/4 rhythm throughout the whole song. Zero flavors, grooves or originality.
As an ex-studio drummer myself, as well as a country/ metal drummer...you nailed it brother! Hell yeah!!!
im a metal guy and mostly played in grind and hardcore bands but man, i played in a country band several years ago and it was the most fun i had playing. the simplicity really lets you open up for dynamics
Respect to Jake, he seems like a super chill guy. He did a damn good job too considering the time changes that get thrown around in this song.
What an intimidating song! He absolutely nailed it. My favourite part of this series is how these drummers can take something completely out of their comfort zone and make it record ready in a morning. True masters
That snare sound hits like a truck. I love it.
Sleep token drummer did this drum interview. Listen to that snare.
@@Dr..Spyderbro discovered sleep token this week and can’t wait to tell everyone
i thought my phone rings and is vibrating. went to check it twice while listening to this fun video.
@@Dr..Spyder II's snare sound is ridiculously good.
Quite the "thwack" to it. Lil too low for me but then again II's is too high for me
Jake's snare sound with this reverb is so awesome!
Huge Gojira fan - enjoyed this! Wasn’t sure how he would hang but impressed with Take 2. Props! 🤘🏼
He did great! And his honesty and humility was heartwarming!!
So much respect to these drummers for taking on these challenges. Really enjoy this series
You can hear how his experience performing live influences his approach. He was leaving space for the other performers in the first take. I like that. I also loved seeing how much fun he was having.
Good point. In his usual genre, leaving space for the other performers would also be very important, right? So maybe that was also part of it?
Jake is an awesome drummer. It was a difficult song, because you can play it in sooo many ways. Gojira drummer indeed is a beast.
Jake Sommers amazing job. I would have been happy with that in the studio
Dude, the speed of pick up of the song is awesome - really good take up of the changes on the second take and hit all his cues - this guy is worth evry penny as a session musician at the very - very ast - amazing job on a challenging song.
One of the best things of this series to me is, that I've get to know great musicians!
Humble, song serving drummers, like this nice guy here.
Really loved some of those fills and the grooveyness from 8:32 onwards was amazing!
The groove got me, I was moving my head along at the moment you mentioned.
I'm so impressed by this cover, the song is so hard to even grasp, yet this drum cover is extremely good.
This show proves the all drummers have an exquisite taste to put his/her own signature in each piece. Love it.
stranded is an absolute beast of a song as is, so seeing a drummer completely outside of the metal realm to take on the challenge is super cool! it's fascinating watching his expressions change between grooving and focusing as he works through the funky time changes
What a sport, such a great attitude, such a great guy. - A Gojira Fan
Likewise
Playing a Gojira song in the drums:
Stranded 😊
Art of Dying 💀
Jake did a great job here!
Gojira is one of, if not the best modern metal band out there today. They’re so insanely tight, all of them.
Agreed. 🤘
right now they are the best metal act. Keeping alive guitarr, drums and vocals only ttradition alive.
I heard Mario Duplantier have 3 legs and 3 arms
Have they asked him to come on yet? He seems to enjoy uploading his own youtubevideos sometimes, so could be fun for him.
Mastodon for me.
The backbone of what he played was so solid ! You can tell he is a master at playing with a group and making a song the best it can be !
Backbone would have been a more interesting song choice. 😂
5:45 that part tickled my brain
11:12 - 11:22 is such a country drummer question. But I respect it so much. Because country drumming is so in pocket and so precise night after night.
That was an incredible interpretation, and he made a ton of great choices when he was filling in his own parts. Really impressive.
Crushed it at 8:30. Bravo!!!!!
That was cool to see him figuring out the song while he was playing it. The second half of his last take was pretty special. Some incredible drummers in the country/ worship scene.
For those that don’t know, Gojira is a band that uses lots of complex polyrhythms. This song was no exception…it’s just that he picked out the steady 4/4 back beat, changing the whole feel in a pretty cool way
This drum part is so creative (especially the outro) for a comparatively simpler song by Gojira standards!
The song Stranded is in 4/4. No complex polyrhythms.
@@joshuahoman1184yes. The only quirk is the switch with the kick and snare during that main riff
This series has made me want to start drumming for real. I’ve been obsessing over it lately! Jake this was amazing!! Thank you Drumeo!
Never heard about Luke Combs, but now I want to listen to it just because of how amazing person and a drummer Jake seems to be. Great job!
This guy is an amazing drummer. What a humble guy and what a tight style he plays!
As a big Gojira fan, huge respect to Jake for this!
Loved how much fun he had and all the respect everyone has for each other regardless of genre. Music really is a language that the whole world speaks.
Love to see an open-handed dude on the show, top work Drumeo and Jake!
Everytime I watch one of these I understand why these guys are professional musician's. The way each guy can get it pretty close to sounding right is impressive.
This is one of my favorites in the series. Jake is just a genuine dude. Would love to hang with him.
