The exercise in this voice training is especially good for those at a beginner or intermediate skill level. However, it is an excellent riffs and runs warm-up for the advanced singer as well.

"Ee" and "ah" are produced with the tongue at opposite ends of the mouth. "Ee' ( /i/ in IPA) is a close vowel while "ah" ( /a/ ) is the most open vowel. The temptation is to close the jaw on /i/ and so create tension. It's fairly easy to keep things open on /a/ so by singing both together without much movement of the jaw is a good way to keep things open. /i/ is a really tricky vowel to get right. Think about your tongue moving itself onto /i/ from /a/, not the jaw.

    • @jaapbadlands

Wait, is the tongue the muscle that controls the intonation?

A few months ago I asked you about how to achieve clean articulation while singing a riff on a single vowel. I wasn't really expecting a response knowning that you are soooo busy. Yet now I return to find your teachings on the very subject I asked about. So I just wanted to express my appriciation and say THANKS for taking the time to put these videos together - you are the BEST in how you sing and what you teach!

While practicing some of my songs for church this week I "accidently" did a few riffs easily and effortlessly without realizing it. It just seemed to "come" easily and with little effort! I dont know WHY this exercise works, but it does! thanks again.

Man, you`re simple FANTASTIC. I`m a vocalist, and after just 2 days of 5 min/day doing this exercise, something really happened, believe me. And i did a lot of vocal exercises on canto lessons. I know a lot of things that you explained here, things that i almost forgot, but the way which you explain is INCREDIBLE CLEAR. THANK YOU VERY MUCH ERIC! YOU VOCAL EXERCISES REALLY POLISH what already exist regarding my voice! All the best and all your dreams to become reality!!!

Man you are soooo right about relaxing, not forcing and trusting that it will come in time. I LITERALLY could not DO these drills exactly a month ago, but kept trying, then SUDDENLY when I was just "googin"around I did them! LOL! I went back to that "goofin around attitude" and did therm again! NOW I can actually FOLLOW ALONG EASILY! It aint "PERFECT" but it's light years away from "never" thinking I would get this!

just keep exercising your voice, don't push but just practice the scales and u'll gradually achieve a better range. i didn't use to be able to sing as high as i can now. I practiced before my school talent show so that I'd be able to belt a demi lovato (powerhouse singer) song, and it really improved my range. just keep practicing at a steady pace don't strain yourself

Great question. The stomach is relaxed-no jumping. The staccato sound happens crisply, yet gently, and the vocal folds. No need to work with stomach too.

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I'm going to watch and practice the different exersizes. Because I teach the kids at my church to sing and I do it by ear but most of the time I can't reach the notes I'm trying to teach so drop it to where we can reach them. Sometimes it changes the beauty of the song. So thank you so much for the lessen.
