    I agree with slowing down to feel and see what's in your presence Snowy. Imagine doing this long walk and rushing the whole way. What a waste. Far out bogs there mate - hard going without the paths. A tip on your tent prusik knot Snowy. It can rise in high winds. Solution: tie a cord around the knot and secure it to the ground with spare peg. Easy. It will keep your vestibule nice and tight to. Nice B&B mind. Good Part 1. Look forward to the trip unfolding. Mark

      I love the Moors! My favourite part of the West Highland way is the crossing of Rannoch Moor so I was in heaven with this walk and so much moorland to navigate! You can't beat a bit of luxury like a kettle and a loo every now and then!😁👍🍻

      Videos like this cannot, and do not, attempt to decribe or explain the challenges faced by early attempts to complete the PW. It is a fanatstic walk through some of England's glorious high country.
      The changes to the route, slabbing of paths, additional accommodation, support services and quaility equipment available, all make a successful PW more achievable - but its still a real challenge! Enjoy every mile.

      I agree Huples, I have experienced dry cold and the wet cold of UK will chill you to the bone even if the temperature is just around freezing or above! The paving was great. It says in the guide book in 100 years it will look like it has always been there!😁🍻

    268 miles is some challenge and good on you for setting yourself that challenge and I bet you are glad it was not 33C on the hike. The flagstones are not pretty but a nightmare hiking through the bog without them. Looked a busy campsite but you seemed to find quiet spot. Great sunrise on day 3 and looked like you have been lucky with the weather so far bu shame you had to cross the motorway, as it brings you back to modern day noise and pollution. Been to Hebden Bridge a few times and a canny spot and a well deserved B&B stop there lol! Cheers Alan

    • @snowymatrix
      @snowymatrix  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just started watching your Pennine way series. You make a good point about taking your time and admiring the scenery. There's a trend these days to get from a to b fast as possible, just for the sake of notoriety and egos. Very interesting, mate 👍

    • @snowymatrix
      @snowymatrix  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello my friend! Yes I have also noticed this lately with these "hiker" types with their ultra minimalists rucksacks and their obligatory Insta picture of said rucksack with hardly nothing in it and not forgetting their inappropriate trail runners which will ruining their feet when they eventually experience a week or two of proper British conditions!. Those type will never impress an old skool time severed hillwalker like me and i'm guessing you too. I have nothing to prove and not going through a mid life crisis like I recon most of them are lol ;-)

    • @wanderingit_
      @wanderingit_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@snowymatrix Think we're on the same wavelength, Snowy. I've had this discussion recently with some 'ultralighters'. Too many are copying trends from US, and aren't facturing in our predominantly wet and cold weather conditions. Might be fine for short, overnight hikes, but not long distance at the expense of common sense and safety, for the sake of saving a bit of weight! Where will it end - how about simply going barefoot? Now that's hardcore ultralight 😂 Anyway, it'll keep mountain rescue teams in training. Take care 👍

    You must have walked that section from Crowden to Hebden Bridge a short time after I passed through on my LEJOG hike Snowy. I love the hike up from Crowden to Laddow Rocks only this time I had strong wind and rain so it wasn't as pleasant as other times I've walked it! I would imagine camping on White Hill is a bit exposed in strong winds, although you seemed to be okay.

    • @snowymatrix
      @snowymatrix  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The day of the wildcamp on White Hill was constant wind but it died down a little bit throughout the night! I think a few weeks before my walk the weather was not that great. A camp warden told me a lot of the flagstone were under water!😁

  • @Ceolskog
    @Ceolskog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are very right about taking time to look at things instead of rushing the walk. I wonder what they mean by the moors being 7,000 years old - is that when it was cleared or something? Or has it something to do with a natural occurrence? Would love to do something like the Pennine way one year, much of my ancestry lies in Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Scotland. That place at the end looked very luxurious! What a change from the previous night, haha!

    • @snowymatrix
      @snowymatrix  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The scientists say most of Britain was covered in ice during the last ice age which only receded 10000 years ago. The sign is saying the bogs formed 7000 years ago.

      Thanks Eddie, yeah I'm not impressed by the 'I did the trail in x number of days' crowd. I know some people have time constraints because of work etc and that's fair enough. But it seems to me that some think there's some kind of kudus gotten if they do a trail in lesser amount of days. To me you cannot enjoy a trail if you are walking from dawn to dusk every day. @@mattstone7980 I knew there was a reason I never stay in youth hostel! 😉 I spoke to a resident who had lived there many years and he told me he'd never heard of a campsite there. If I could be bothered I'd contact Cicerone Press and tell them to strike that campsite info from their guide book.

      @@mattstone7980 maybe, anyway I was glad I went on to Hebden Bridge instead because I liked that place. Plus in the morning I detoured up the Rochdale Canal which was a really pleasant and beautiful walk before walking back to pick up the Pennine Way again!🙂

    Great Video, as for very early days in these parts, I for one cannot understand why anyone would willingly walk across a 10 mile stretch of bog up to their knees in it just to say ,Look at me and what I have done. ( How many of them were simply being laughed at.) And I cant stop thinking that was Darwin award behaviour.

      Thank you! They must have been tough walkers the early pioneers of the Pennine Way - mud, sweat and tears! atb
