Just wanted to add my experience. I was a certified Vibration analyst for NASA. On of the issues discovered about vibration or "Drone" was that it is all about "Frequency Resonance". Where did the Frequency/Drone occur? Without any testing or frequency readings on your vehicle, "Just add Mass". Example - find some lead sheeting or heavier sheet metal and wrap it around the muffler and secure. By adding enough "Mass" to the muffler it will change the frequency of the vibration inside the muffler, thus moving the frequency to another level. It might take some playing with the amount of mass but it worked on many of the vibration frequencies" affecting critical NASA equipment. Just food for thought.
Thank you for putting together this video! I too am looking for a more cost effective approach versus having someone weld additional pipes in, etc. Love this!
I wrapped my sport mufflers on my Porsche. There pretty thin metal, and I wanted to deaden the raspy noise, however the wrap stinks bad. I agree with the Nasa guy about adding sheets of thicker metal.
that smell is it oils or whatever burning after a couple days it will go away. did it solve your rasping issue? im currently having the same issue with my audi
I'm getting ready to do this today. I bought a cheap catback for my Subaru and the muffler material is too thin and has no support inside so at certain rpms the sound waves cause the entire muffler to ring out like a bell. If I put my hand on it the ringing goes away like you'd expect. It sounds really good until the drone kicks in.
@@s-labs7731 ya it worked perfectly. The muffler body was too thin and acting like a bell. If you knocked on it you'd hear it ringing out but if you held your hand on it and knocked it wouldn't ring out. The wrap worked like a dream.
I just tried this on a 2012 Yukon Denali with 6.2 and a single Gibson exhaust. sorry but it did not work, everything sounded much deeper in bass (not just the 2k-2.5k drone) but from idle on up to 3k. I am going to remove it and go for a different muffler.
I was wondering it just welding rod chucks across the middle of the resonators would add mass and kill the vibrations. Audi s4guys know this pain all too well.
i've wrapped my entire 3.0tfsi exhaust from downpipe (right after factory cat location) through to my rear muffler boxes. check audizine c7 "custom a7 exhaust" thread

Thank you for your input.
I worked at nasa too..
Isn’t adding exhaust wrap as he did “adding mass”?
@@jamesc6137 it is, but if adding mass is the fix perhaps it can be resolved with even less effort, without wrapping.
How would you go about adding the sheet metal to the exhaust and securing it?
Thank you for putting together this video! I too am looking for a more cost effective approach versus having someone weld additional pipes in, etc. Love this!
Glad it was helpful!
I discovered this when i wrapped an expansion pipe on a 2 stroke exhaust. It SIGNIFICANTLY reduced noise on that application.
Awesome
What will fix the drone completly is removing the stock engine and installing a 454LSX.
Ah, I'm a small block guy
yeah and spend 2k in the process lol

How would you go about out adding thicker metal to the parts of the exhaust and actually securing it though?
What kind of wrap did you use?
that smell is it oils or whatever burning after a couple days it will go away. did it solve your rasping issue? im currently having the same issue with my audi
I've done this , its good for about 20dB. most sports mufflers have this inside the muffler chamber.
yea was kinda disappointed this muffler came as just the "can"
I'm running straight pipe on my Nissan, the catalytic converter, directly under the engine.
Should I just wrap the cat then? What about the heat?
i did this to quite down drone. i wrapped the entire exhaust on my car to reduce heat
This is a really solid idea man.
thank ya. sometimes a gambles pay off
Would have been nice if you produced a before and after video so we could hear the difference. But thanks for the idea.
Sound of the exhaust didn't change. Just the drone inside the vehicle.
does it matter which muffler I apply the heat wrap to? Since i only changed the end muffler for a 4” exhaust muffler.
I would wrap the one that was changed.

Good luck!

I'm trying to remove vibration, I hope it works. I have the same issue.
Hope it works for you. Really helped cut down the drone for me.
😱The secret is out👍👍😎
Wrapping the exhaust pipe often helps also.
Use aircraft stainless steel safety wire .032 diameter.
👍👍😎😁
Now if I could just stop glass packs from burning out and getting louder. 😳
Thanks for the info!
Is a wrap completely safe under extreme heat? Would it not burn or anything
Its designed for high temps. My cars headers are wrapped and they get red hot.
Is the wrap made of fiber glass? Also wanna ask how about if I paint the muffler with a high temp spray would that help as well?
What wrap did you use?. Do think any wrap would work? Thanks
The wrap I used is linked in the description, assume any exhaust wrap would work.
Nice thanks for the test drive
Any time!
Brilliant, thus would mean that the muffler casings are too thin.
I ordered the wrong part number. Showed up and it was hollow, nothing inside. Tried it and terrible drone.
Would this work on pipe instead of muffler?
I suppose. My theory was the muffler acted like a bass drum.
Did you do any before and after vids?
No I dont. Was just an idea that worked out.

Yes a bigger muffler would be more effective. This is a quick fix that worked for me.

Couldnt speak to that. This was a quick fix that years later is still working fine.

@@Pwnulolumad my center res is just a vibration factory. It's so annoying
@@PwnulolumadHow’s the drone
Hey man what material did you use, was it fibreglass?
yes, standard exhaust wrap
I have to try this, i have 5,7 Jeep Grand Cherokee with magnaflow and drone from this muffler is blowing my head off.
Been there, for the price n effort I was amaized by the difference. Still has some drone but not obnoxious anymore.
Really you fix all drone sounds?
This did not take care of all the drone. It did make a substantial difference.
I did this on my bmw Z3 drone at 3000rpm (100hz)
it does not work !
I will install a helmholtz resonator
It worked great on my application.
Add the resonator on the Y-pipe. That should help
@@dinky19810 i have a 4 cynlider, but i have build a helmholtz resonator ! It perfectly work !
Or just paint it with high temp paint meant for exhaust manifold
The exhaust wrap is to mellow out the drone.
what would painting do?
@ similar effect! I do it on my evo. Use exhaust manifold paint not any kind of paint
@@NightVisio9m but thats just a light paint coat, since the wrap is thicker it would protect more no?
@@vlz.matthew ive tried both 2-3 coat of exhaust manifold paint has same effect as wrap
Resonantors
Probably end up putting bigger muffler, this was a quick fix
