    Seems like I'm never satisfied with the sound of any exhaust, but this one has me second guessing myself on the choice of muffler. I like the overall tone of the sound, but its got just a bit too much volume.

      The J-pipe is going to be the best return on time investments here, short of a OEM jumbo muffler & e-cutout. You'll be able to get that 2200rpm frequency with a phone app and tune most of out out. Your truck definitely has the space for it.

    Move the resonator to the front of the system. The drone starts up front and travels down the pipe. Also it will bring the flow master sound back. If you have ever done a cat delete and kept the same muffler you will get the drone. Yet if you leave the cats but remove the muffler it sounds good in the cab still. I just fought this on my Audi s4. They make resonated down pipes for this exact reason on the Audi. Hope this helps.

    • @klampykixx
      @klampykixx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Do u feel the resonators handle the engine heat ok up front?
      Im currently planning my jeep exhaust and have a couple ideas floating.

    • @handothemagnifico
      @handothemagnifico 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@klampykixx Yes they do actually. The car gets driven pretty hard and they have been solid for 2 years now. The drone inside the car was really bad at highway speeds. The mufflers at the back did make a difference but it had the harmonics up front that created the annoyance inside until I resonated the downpipes. Night and day difference in the driving experience of the car.

    • @AdmiralRustyShackleford
      @AdmiralRustyShackleford 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@handothemagnifico A lot of vehicles use resonators in the rear by the bumper, so they must work back there. A resonated downpipe is just to make up for a cat delete, not because it's the best possible placement of the resonator in the entire system.
      An example is the Charger/Challenger. People do a rear resonator delete only, and they drone. They do a center muffler delete only, and they don't.
      Every car and truck will be different, depending on the rest of the exhaust system. Personally, I would just add another smaller resonator in front of the muffler or since he has duals in front of it, 2 small ones further forward.

    • @handothemagnifico
      @handothemagnifico 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AdmiralRustyShackleford he had a truck. The drone in a car and suv will travel threw the trunk space. That's why they use resonators on gm suv in the rear but not on the pick ups. The drone passed the cab is not nearly as bad due to the bed space allowing it to escape. If his cats are gone then he needs the resonators in its place to reduce the cab drone. I only used my Audi as a small example. I own a performance shop and experience this often. I use resonators in the crossover pipes when I need to stop the drone in a ls pick up. 👍

    • @AdmiralRustyShackleford
      @AdmiralRustyShackleford 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@handothemagnifico The newer Silverado uses a tailpipe resonator, as do the Hemi Rams, since they came out in 03 or whenever. Drone isn't just vibration it also comes from the exhaust frequency and volume so any resonator no matter where it's placed will change the sound.

    Those Pro Series mufflers are excellent! I run a dual 3 inch setup using a pair of those on my 427 Windsor powered 1985 Mustang LX. Over 35 years of owning the Mustang this is the quietest system I have had on the car. I also run the Flowmaster D flow mid pipe which is like a mix of an H and X flow setup. I run short tailpipes that exit at the rear of the tires but not to the bumper. Very quiet for 560 HP and no drone at all!

    If you used some exhaust wrap it can help with the exhaust resignating. Some other stuff you can do that will make a big improvement is to install some sound deadening mat on the interior of the truck. Do the floor. Doors, back of the cab and roof. That will make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!!! Then do a spray in bed liner. I recommend the Rhino Liner brand (like the actual Rhino Liner, not some knock off). The reason is because it is more of a rubbery material, rather than something that is really gritty and rough. It is also applied thicker. I used to work for a rhino Liner dealer and it is sprayed at 1/4" thick on the bed floor and 1/8" on the sides and tailgate. It does an amazing job at deadening the bed from vibrations and rattles. Nice job on the exhaust!

    As always, awesome content. A couple of things I could suggest. 1) Dynomax UltraFlow Round muffler, 22" long, in 4". About 85 bucks at Summit, nice deep sound. I enjoy it. You are like me though, and have a preference on sound. 2) Yes, a Helmholtz resonator will kill the drone. You should need one about 22" long. 3) Take a minute to research that shock relocation thing. They are on opposite sides to minimize axle wrap. When you go turbo on that truck, you'll need all the help you can get, unless you plan on CalTrac's or something similar.

The Spintech 6000 I have is right under the backseat (being a quad cab) haven't tried to see if theres a big difference with the seat up or down. All I know is if I'm in heavy traffic going slow 10-15% throttle it drones... from like ~1,100rpm. If it does start to drone I just tip in a tiny bit and the drone shuts up lol Stock manifolds, cats into a Y 2.5" single side exit into a Y split tip slant cut 4"x19" between the back of the cab and the rear tire.

    Dumps are worst setup IMO. I hate owning a vehicle I love to drive that I can't stand to drive. I've done it before and regretted it immediately. Friends builds samething. They'd swear that's what the wanted no matter what I said. We get it for a ride and the look on their faces all said the same thing. "Oh shit, this sucks. I can't even hear the stereo". Resonators and mufflers out the bad from now on Plus 100lbs of sound deadening. Makes all that hard work worth it and enjoyable. Again this is just my opinion. To each his own. Truck sounds great. • @Fendamonky
      @Fendamonky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelbrown5601 a j-pipe is tuneable based on the length of the pipe. Essentially what you're doing is finding the correct length to create a sound wave at 1/2 the frequency of your drone. As that pulses back through your exhaust it will effectively cancel out the noise/drone of that particular frequency.
      Calculations have been done for length based on most piston engines.

    Tip
    Record your irritating exhaust system with a good digital recorder.
    Put the file into the computer and note what frequencies are worst.
    Search for a reference paper on tuning exhaust systems for sound and se what is required to kill those frequencies.
    It’s been years since I’ve done anything like this so don’t ask for specific information.
    I have used it to create a tuned length resonator. This is jut a length of pipe joined into a convenient place that is closed off at one end.

    At 18 I was all about straight pipes and now at 30+ decent sound and being able to talk without yelling at each other in the cab has a value. I’ve found a muffler with a nice tone but mild in cab noise after many years of trying everything. I keep a Dynomax 17698, in my shop at all times. along with a few flowmaster S bend kits.
    There is a longer case (17789) I use them on my tow vehicles, dump mine right in front of the the bumper similar to how this truck was done. I’ve found that way keeps it quiet inside like a tailpipe but much harder to ding and bend keeps the rear tire from beating up the pipe.

    Tailpipes make a huge difference. I once cut the mufflers off of my car so it was straight piped ending in the middle of the car. Got tired of it and added tailpipes going straight out the back still without mufflers. It did wonders but the car was still droney so I added hellcat mid-mufflers/resonators and it sounds pretty good. My car came with a factory x-pipe and has some drone at around the same rpm. I’ve driven the same car with an H-pipe conversion and it sounded way better. Also I’ve noticed that large diameter exhausts are harder to quiet down.

    Nice fab skills! The exhaust looks badass, and sounds fantastic. I am with you though on the excessive interior noise. I have the opposite issue however. It is loud in the cab while accelerating, and cruising at a steady speed, it's quiet. 2014 F150 STX 5.0. I ordered a premade Dynomax single three inch stainless exhaust with an Ultra Flo welded muffler. The entire resonator was missing from the kit, and that was how it was supposed to attach to the original cat pipes. I took it to an exhaust shop, since the WHOLE idea was bolt on and I could install it in the driveway and weld it up. For a resonator, he spliced a stainless steel glasspack in, then ran the extra provided pipes back to the muffler. The tailpipe fit like a glove and hit the hangers dead on. But the weird part is that cruising at ANY speed you hear almost nothing, but accelerating even softly produces a loud throbbing pulsing bombombombom sound. I am pretty sure I will get used to it after a while, but I saw where a guy soaked some header wrap and wrapped his muffler with it, which seemed to help.

    Tip of the day, purge the tubes with argon gas while tig welding. This will weld the tube on the inside as well as the outside. Less chance of the welds cracking on stainless.

    Sounds great 👍 The only way I've found to eliminate drone whilst maintaining the volume is to fit J pipes though.

  • @Carl_Jr
    @Carl_Jr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A couple of things . . .
    The resonance is caused by the diameter and length of the pipe. Think of it like the difference between a trumpet and a trombone. A trick I was shown in shop class back in HS was to weld a small piece of metal to the pipe similar to balancing the driveshaft. It'll help stiffen up the pipe and it won't bellow as much.
    Another option is one of those flex pipes with the woven metal used on a lot of FWD cars. Those help fool the pipes into thinking they're shorter and will change the resonance frequency.

    My cammed 4.8 Silverado with a magnaflow muffler was very raspy at certain rpm. I put a dynomax race bullet muffler ($25 at summit)just in front of the magnaflow and it took all the loud raspyness out of it. Found that on a forum and was surprised at how good it worked

    It still sounds awesome but I don’t have to live with it. I had a k5 blazer with dual thrush chambered mufflers and it sounded amazing but I couldn’t stand driving it for long distances. It droned and vibrated so bad it was literally exhausting to drive. No pun intended 😂

    Helmholtz Resonator was the best thing I ever did on my 454 suburban to cure my 1800rpm drone. take a little math and fab work, but very easy and incredi8bly effective! I need to do a video on it...

  • @bluecollarhotrods9781
    @bluecollarhotrods9781 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It certainly tamed it down quite a bit. I have 2.5" lead pipes coming off the headers on my truck, dynomax race bullets X 2. Then a two in, one out - large case Magnaflow. It's a dual 2.5" in, single 3.5" out muffler. I have a 3.5" tailpipe exiting in the factory location. It's really tame at idle and cruise. Sounds pissed off at wide open throttle. A few times I thought that maybe it was too quiet, but after any kind of long trip... I know I made the right choice. I have an LQ4 with a small cam. I did the same LQ4/80E swap to my father's GMC Sierra. Slightly larger camshaft in his truck. Same headers, 2.5" dual pipes all the way to the factory location. Two 14" case Magnaflow oval case mufflers. It was really raspy and unbearable. I added two resonators similar to what you used. It cleaned up the sound, but still a bit too loud for my 71 year old father. I'm about to switch to a dual in/dual out muffler with a longer case than those 14" deals. Praying that it tames it down to the desired level. If not, I am going to rip it all off and start over.

I have the car up on jack stands as I have the motor out (Going 396 CI) I'm redesigning the exhaust system with a E-Cut out so I have have a nice tone while cruising but can also be annoyingly loud if the mood strikes me.

    Seems like instead of changing the volume of the exhaust coming out of the tailpipe, you could change the amount of sound coming into the cab. A little sound deadening material might help with the droning, vibrating panels.

  • @blackhawk7r221

    Try 3” flexible conduit. The lack of a smooth inner wall surface kills the resonance problem and often eliminates the need of any muffler at all.

  • @gtrider316
    @gtrider316 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Had a similar situation on my fbody. Resonator and different muffler helped but still droned a bit. Added sound deadening material inside the car and it made it much quieter not only from the exhaust but road noise and vibrations as well.

    Depending on the space you have available, a parallel helmholtz exhaust resonator tube is more effective at eliminating drone than a pass through type resonator.

      @@davidterceira7451 a helmholtz resonator is a tube that branches off from the main exhaust pipe. Its capped on one end and basically reflects the sound waves back into the exhaust and cancels out the target sound frequency. You generally measure the frequency you want to eliminate and then add an appropriate length helmholtz resonator. There is a more precise formula to calculate the appropriate length. Although by my quick research, generally, the larger the helmholtz resonator, the larger the range of sound frequencies it will cancel out. Best part about these resonators is that they do not introduce any sort of flow resistance. If you want to see what they look like, search most civic type r exhaust systems. Most of them seem to use helmholtz
