This game looks great! I applaud to the designer/artist who is responsible for that boss on 9:46 What an amazing job at faking 3d, it uses so many sprites together that it's body almost looks solid at times - I've never saw this effect done so well on 16-bit platforms before, it always seemed that console's sprite limitation would not allow enough "segments" to match smooth looking segmented bosses in arcade games like Bade Master, but nope, Psygnosis kicked everyone's butts yet again when it comes to visuals... Damn, these guys were always guru's of pixel art on par with SNK!
For every bad game on SEGA 16 Bit, there are Three good goods. I remember seeing this game for the first time and I couldn't believe the creativity in the Bosses.
In all fairness though the graphics look great for the time and the soundtrack is decent and the variety in gameplay per level is astounding. Shame it never came out in the states. It would've been a fun weekend rental back in the day. Definitely giving this one a try on my Pi Cart.
I as a Super Nintendo Lover. Call this for Mega Drive, one of the best action games I've played in life. The non-stop action, soundtrack and creative enemies and bosses kicked my asss! This is basically a Contra game with swords * _ *
That's obvioursly the sequel of The First Samurai on Amiga and SNES - but I can't hear "oh no, my sword" or "halleluja"... Those Samurai games are pretty good, but their story is quite confusing and the enemies are sometimes weird. Interesting titles!
I thought for the longest time this and the SNES First Samurai were two games with nearly identical names by sheer coincidence, but nope, turns out they were an Amiga series the whole time. ...In which the first became a semi-faithful recreation on the SNES while the Genesis version of the second game (why each system got only ONE of them I have yet to understand) doesn't even slightly resemble the original.
This one actually looks like it is Psygnosis and the name wasn't just put on the box unlike the other version which I Believe was Imageworks like the first AMIGA game but they slapped the logo on the box.
In the first level, you're expected to know there's a secret passage underneath the giant boulder AND to throw the rocks to jump across falling platforms to get the final spirit in the first area. Is it (dare I say it) the Dark Souls of Mega Drive hack and slash games?
Nice game overall. It really has some good parallax scrolling and good color use for the genesis. Boss battles are also something. Music is acceptable for the most part. I just wish some sfx were less annoying :/
this game is wicked, but im stuck.. when you drop down on the first stage and you come to that first floating electricity ball thing, it wont let me past! what am i doin wrong here? gah!!
@wrestletube1 Didn't I mention that the text and boss graphics are also very Psygnosis like in this version compared to the other? That makes me think that Vivid Image and Sony Imageworks which was the team that did the first worked on the AMIGA version but slapped the Psygnosis logo on it anyway since Psygnosis and Sony started the deal then, whilst other members of Vivid worked on the SEGA version with Psygnosis for real and made an actual Psygnosis look version.
@MajorStupido Are you kidding. It is an actual Arcade YM-Chip within the hardware although it's one of the lower end YM Arcade chips, it doesn't suck though as it wouldn't be used in Arcades at all otherwise.
Heh I can't help but think of the Samurai Jack cartoon that was on CN years ago when I look at this game. It also involves a samurai traveling through time, seeking to destroy a demon that has enslaved the world. I wonder if the creator of Samurai Jack may have been inspired by this game and its prequel. Seeing how unusual and silly Second Samurai sometimes is (on the Amiga anyway) I can't help but think this is the case.
I have no idea how I finished this game when I was 5! The last boss is scary and hardcore, I remember him and his attacking eyeballs the most lol Omg it feels so good watching this again... Yet weird.
Amiga version is different than Sega version! But sorry Amiga version is really better...Sound and music are fantastic in Amiga but I admit that graphics are successful in Megadrive version.
It's amazing how time fly, i play this game with my grandfather, a long time ago.

Also the Soundtrack in this game is so stunning good. It reminds me of Psygnosis 32bit classics. Very tecno-psygnosis-esque :)
Final boss: "Eat my lunch!" And then pukes maggots at you - fking hilarious, and I still remember that from when I was a kid!
For every bad game on SEGA 16 Bit, there are Three good goods. I remember seeing this game for the first time and I couldn't believe the creativity in the Bosses.
this bring tears, yesterday i was a kid playing games, this was my first video game :')
from that time i am addicted to video games :D
This game looks pretty good and it was released quite late on the MegaDrive. I have never heard of this game and would love to play it someday. :D
This game looks really fucking awesome.. Like, it gets better and better with each level.
FairFairFair FAIR It's decent but the forced collecting and limited sword durability gets tedious.

My first sega 's game
one of my favourite games on the sega megadrive/genesis!psygnosis and vivid image were indeed very talanted!
You are giving psygnosis too much credit they sometimes make some bangers.
Such an epic game. Loved playing it! Never finished it though...
This is my favourite video game of all time :)
this game was as bonus with my Sega MD2 in pack. noone in our town played it before, so I had unique game
they went for those realistic looking grafics and it worked pretty well !
i have no idea wtf is happening in this game

Nice music.
GOTTA GET BACK
BACK TO THE PAST

The game looks pretty fun, and the music is awesome! :D
помню как играл в эту игру, эх прошли те времена =)
You need to find all the souls (the blue jars). Note how the player also gets blocked in this playthrough until all the souls are collected.
One of my fav mega drive game 👍
I played this 30 years ago, and remember it only because of the last boss's sentences! Amazing finding something after 30 years
this is an awesome game I dont know why i didn't have this when i was growing up
AA memories... we barely beat this game co-op with my brother .... maaahn time sure flies :( !!!
ADI Domi

This one actually looks like it is Psygnosis and the name wasn't just put on the box unlike the other version which I Believe was Imageworks like the first AMIGA game but they slapped the logo on the box.
I remember loving this, but it was SO hard. Never gotten past that plant eyeball thingy.
A Samurai, riding on a lizard dinosaur, collecting jars containing ghosts. Ok I'm in
Forgot to add, shooting lasers while riding a jetpack. Bonkers

The music from 43:32 is still stuck in my head after all these years... I played this when I was a kid and now I'm 29 xD

you are annoying go play your gay snes with it's gay sound effects
@@ragezone9188 I don't even own a snes. I own this game however.

THat's where I"m stuck too, did you ever figure it out
someone said above you need to find all the blue jars to pass
7:55 boiling beans ready...
Nice play as always.
how have I never heard of this game?
I love the random knife to the sky after the first boss was defeated
At 9:15 how do you remove the electric ball?
@wrestletube1 Didn't I mention that the text and boss graphics are also very Psygnosis like in this version compared to the other?

What does Caveman have to do with Samurai

Most beautifully and hard game of old
¡Samurai Jack And Ashi!
This game looks rad
Play the Amiga versione is waaaaaay more crazy and fun, the hit detection in the Genesis version is terrible!
Imagine this game in the style of Sekiro.
After beating boss of minute 38 you can break the stuff of the top of the screen with the red ball
nostalgia puraaaaa.......
OMG!!! I don't know how many hours i spent playing this game!!! XD
This game looks very good but the level design is strange and overly complicated, this was a common problem with amiga games of the time.
In what way do you mean regarding Amiga games?
where is first samurai mister jia na da ren?
43:21 What The...
I remember that you had to hold the paus button to keep the game paused.
j ai toujours adorer ce jeu

The fire at 07:59 sounds like a really bad case of dirrahea XD
CooL Game!!! NEver heard of it before. :) Nice1

Ah lol i played it 13 years ago :))))))))) Cool Game!
