    Undertale is a retro RPG style game where you play as a kid who fell down a hole and into the realm of monsters. as this kid, you're trying to get back to the human world, and along the way you'll meet all sorts of interesting characters and learn about why the monsters are trapped underground in the first place. the main cool thing about the game is, whatever you do, it will remember. so you have to choose conscientiously.
    the game also has a unique mechanic for interacting with NPCs... some will just talk to you, but some will trigger a type of encounter where you control a little red heart in a box at the bottom of your screen, and projectiles are sent your way in something reminiscent of bullet hell style gameplay. the fun thing is, the shapes of the projectiles and the way they behave are often used as characterization for whoever you're dealing with, and in between each round of bullet hell, you're given options for how to handle the interaction until the encounter ends somehow, based on how you played it.
    on the whole, Undertale's characters are the element of the game that leaves the absolute strongest impression. the story is really well thought out, and really well executed, especially given the multiple endings that are possible to achieve based on your choices.

    One thing Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale’s music (as well as the game itself) loves to do is use leitmotifs. If you listen to enough music you’ll hear certain pieces of it repeated, when characters are in specific situations or when the same character reappears.

    Something cool about the undertale ost is that a lot of the songs use microtones with notes in between the standard 12 tones, so it’s impossible to reproduce the music perfectly on many western instruments

    • @fahrenheit2101
      @fahrenheit2101 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Stop throwing the word 'microtone' around. None of Toby's songs are what a musician would consider microtonal. Microtonality is the use of intervals of less than a semitone. Toby never does this, he simply has his songs in a non-standard key from time to time. I could be wrong, though, I'm no expert either. If he were to use the standard 12 tones as well as notes in between within the same song, that'd be somewhat microtonal, especially if he did this within a particular section of an OST. To my knowledge he never has - microtonal music makes for a weird listen, definitely the sort of thing you need to train your ear to like, since we're very used to the standard intervals.

    You should DEFINITELY play the whole game
    The entire OST is composed by Toby Fox, who also wrote and programmed most of the game by himself, and he was recently a composer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
    The game tells the tale of a young human who falls from Mt. Ebott and must find their way underground to go back to the surface
    Every character oozes personality, the writing is witty, funny, but also emotional, the gameplay varies difficulty depending on which choices you make and there are three different endings that can be achieved based on your actions during the game
    I definitely recommend playing this game without a chat in blind, though, UT fans tend to get very... Backseaty when watching someone play for the first time, it is supposed to be enjoyed without someone spoiling anything from it

    • @lunarAureola
      @lunarAureola ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @huntersuper98
      @huntersuper98 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be honest they're usually only SUPER back seaty when someone tries to go (light spoiler for an ending name) the genocide route on their first playthrough and honestly I can't blame em. You're meant to go in blind and unless you already know about the different ending requirements no one is going to go Genocide the first time around. The endings are kinda designed to go in order of Neutral-Pacifist-Genocide. Usually people will stop at the first two though.

    3:06: "This reminds me of something you would jam out in college in Fruity Loops"
    Well, that's exactly what Toby Fox - the creator and composer of Undertale - did, so good catch. lol (though it's called FL Studio nowadays, they dropped the name "Fruity Loops" a long time ago)
    This song in particular uses a lot of stock samples and plugins from FL Studio.
    The guy went from jamming out in college to being one of the most well-known and respected gaming personalities, Undertale being included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, composing for new Pokemon games and writing for the Japanese video game magazine Famitsu while his indie games still retain a cult following.

    Cool thing about the game is the music "foreshadowing". You actually get slightly shifted versions of that song once you get to its associated area in the game. Really cool and rewarding if you were paying attention to the BGM when you get to a boss and you finally hear the "full" version. It's the same for the other songs in the OST too.

    Undertale is a game where you play as a human who has fallen underground and encounters many monsters on their journey. It's all about choices and their consequences, good or bad. As the trailer says, it's the game where no one has to die. You can kill or spare just about anyone you come across in The Underground. You can befriend them and get the chance to learn more about each of them. Of course sparing your enemies won't always be easy to do, but with enough DETERMINATION you can prove the world is more than just kill or be killed... or, whether it be because frustration, curiosity, or something more sinister, kill and take their lives. The game has absolutely amazing writing and an amazing soundtrack (it makes a lot of use of lietmotifs and i cant get enough of that). I won't spoil anything but this song you listened to is a battle theme for my favorite character named Mettaton, a robotic TV star who just might have more to him than meets the eye if you dig deep enough and know where to look, but I'll leave that up to you to find out for yourself. I love this game so much and absolutely recommend it to anyone.

    Undertale's OST is one that strongly benefits from listening to the tracks relatively in the order of appearance on the soundtrack.
    The entire soundtrack is essentially like a dozen different motifs and leitmotifs that Toby slaps around and molds into the shape of what type of track he needs it to be. A little musical phrase you hear in an area might be established as a little creepy and unsettling as you enter a new space, but then get a little key change into a remix of it that's more light and happy when you meet a friendly character in the region, then get a tempo and rhythm facelift to land as a boss theme at the end of the area.
    The Undertale OST is really a fun look at how a composer can take just a couple different musical ideas and stitch a multi-piece suite of songs together out of them and I think any aspiring composer can definitely benefit from seeing how he takes simple ideas and compounds them into very different songs.

    Big, BIG recommend on listening to basically the entire soundtrack. Every little piece of it is damn-near musical perfection all written and created by one guy: the main developer Toby Fox. In fact, a massive video of listening to the entire thing in one sitting is how I recommend you experience it, as the various leitmotifs that tie the whole thing together are often missed.
    Undertale itself is a retro RPG/bullet hell hybrid in the most basic of terms. Its gameplay is walking around, talking, having fun and cool interactions with NPC's, and facing random encounters. The real draw to the gameplay is the morality system. In Undertale, you don't have to kill anything. You can slaughter with wild abandon or spare your adversaries and make friends instead. But either way, you will be judged, and there will be consequences for whatever you choose even if you try to fix it.
    Story wise, Undertale is also pretty simple on the surface. You're a human child who fell into the world of monsters contained under Mt. Ebbott by a magical barrier. Your goal is to survive and escape the Underground. Along the way, you get to know and spend time with amazingly well-written characters that are beyond interesting and charming as all hell, discover the story of ages past and how the monsters got stuck under the mountain, and discover a wild meta-narrative involving save states, life beyond death, and a special power you wield known as Determination. This game is one of my favorite games of all time, and it served as one of the three pillars that inspired me to pursue writing. It is, for all intents and purposes, a masterpiece that I recommend with all my heart.

    If you're gonna check out more Undertale OST, which I highly suggest you do as there was a period of my life where I listened to it almost exclusively, I'd suggest Dummy and Spiders dance as they are some of my favourites. Megalovania is the most well known Undertale song, and it's super intense.

    Its about a child that falls into the underground and must find a way out, the game is alot more than that though with characters you will love and a great story, and some of the coolest ideas ive seen, but yeah i wont spoil anything, there are also different ways to play and get different endings

    Oh hell nah! If you do once an Undertale OST, then you have to do *THE WHOLE* OST or no one will sleep.
    My personal favorites are ASGORE+Bergentrucküng, Hopes and Dreams, Spider Dance and Battle Against a True Hero (this one being my favorite). Megalovania is the most popular and a really known meme song too, you probably heard that too.
    Toby Fox is CRAZY, the whole Undertale OST is just beautiful and tells a whole story just with the music, using lots of leitmotifs in a bunch of song that makes connections between them, as every character and place has its own motif. So for example, Waterfall and Battle Against a True Hero (True Undyne's Theme) are the same song but at different speed, as Undyne lives in Waterfall and tries to save her home. Or then Toriel's Theme and Asgore's Theme have in their songs the same motif, because they were married, etc, etc, etc.
    Please keep going and make this a series, I swear you won't regret it and people will love it!

    "What's this game about?"
    So basically you fell in something and go to this weird and bizarre "under"world and the rest is better to experience one for itself.
    But the whole game and soundtrack was made by just one person: Toby Fox. A true genius

    As someone incredibly into music I’m shocked that you haven’t played or even heard of Undertale or anything from it. But that just means you have probably a lot of videos and requests ahead of you for the entire soundtrack because it’s all amazing, should check out the most iconic piece of music next being “Megalovania”, you’ve probably heard this one before just in passing because it’s so iconic but it’s still worth a listen.

    PLEASE do more Undertale! This game's soundtrack is golden. Next I'd recommend probably Bonetrousle? I'd definitely watch a live stream of the entire soundtrack.
    The game's story is about a kid who falls into a hole and enters the "Underground" where monsters are trapped. You have the choice to either make friends or make enemies and the story has a lot of philosophical implications about apathy.

    Toby Fox’ work is AMAZING! The characters and the plot of the game are touching and very well-thought and the music makes the whole thing shine 10 times stronger, it’s very groovy and has fantastic melodies. You 100% should be checking more stuff from it! If not the full soundtrack, then I gotta say that Dummy + Spider Dance, Your Best Nightmare, Hopes and Dreams, Finale, Megalovania (which is extremely popular even outside of the game fanbase) are a MUST

    edit: ill tell a bit about this game. its about a 'human' who falls in the underworld which is filled with another species called monsters (correct me if im wrong undertale fans i dont really remember lol cuz have been watching lot of anime lately). This game is unique cuz it remembers what you do, and the story changes massively on how you play this game. The characters are beautifully written, and the ost is a masterpiece. definately recommend you to check out the game and the ost

    4:18 When you said "It has that feel" like Megaman, you were right on the money! This game and its music hits gamers in that "it has that feel" spot, except not just with Mega Man, but with pretty much every major genre in the 8-16 bit era. You definitely should react to the OST! Undertale is almost an "anti-game" with how self referential and meta it is, it definitely subverts you're expectations COMPLETELY if you come into it expecting an RPG or JRPG. It's a brilliant and hilarious game, truly a work of a art.

    Please more Undertale. The game is in that old bit style with minimal animation and only text boxes, so all of the music has to not only carry a strong narrative role but also do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to inciting the emotion the game wants the player to feel, and because of that all the tracks are fun little journeys.

    Undertale is a somewhat JRPG-y (gameplay-wise) game which, as its main pulling point, gives the player an option (and, honestly speaking, encourages the player) to finish pretty much all "fights" _peacefully._ What this ultimately entails is that all the characters in the game (including the typical 'mob monsters') are made to make the player *WANT TO* befriend them instead of... murdering them mercilessly.
    This is made that much clearer with all the boss enemies who are given much more character and 'nice quirks' than those would usually have in most other games.
    This track is the boss fight music for one of those 'enemies' which you can choose to befriend. This boss is... flamboyant to an extreme.
