Thanks again! Your videos about toothbrushing electric and manual are truly invaluable , it's frightening to see most of us we don't have a clue how to brush our teeth and so we're damaging both teeth and gums. Your website is a great reference for teeth and gum care as well.
Thanks for the amazing video! I lost a lot of teeth and spent a lot of money on dental work, but your tips on brushing with a manual toothbrush were so insightful and easy to apply. It's great to finally feel confident in my dental hygiene routine.
Thank you so much! Awesome video explaining the 45 angle brush placement. As simple as it sounds I didn’t quite understand with way to use my brush. You actually answered my question...45 angle UP and 45 angle DOWN now perfectly clear to me. So happy you explained this I’m actually going to go practice with my Oral-B...that too was an awesome video!!
Thanks doc you can't imagine how helpful this video is i have suffered horrible mouth focused OCD for these last 4 months I been abusing my gums and teeth this video helped me so much taking it slow and take my time to practice awesome video hopefully helps other people as well with anxiety
Great video! I have been using an electric toothbrush for a long while now (great video on that as well). But now with a toddler daughter, I have to use a manual toothbrush again. The technique you showed makes even more sense than what I've learned in the past. Thank you!

I had a bad dental check up and needed to change the way I brush. I have watched dozens of videos, this video is the first that I liked and commented on. Great job showing up close. By the way your teeth and gums are amazing. I am jealous.
Take care of your gums and they can be just as good! As for my teeth, it took 5 years of braces to get them to look that way. I have my parents to thank for that. =)

I thought I'd try a sonic toothbrush. I don't like it's small head and I don't like how it tickles. Back to a manual one. Actually I feel I can have more control with a manual brush. New sub!!
Fantastic video. I've been looking for a video with the level of detail you provide. Questions: is it ok to first brush with water only, and apply toothpaste with the toothbrush, afterward? If you are to spit out the toothpaste along with saliva, but not rinse out the toothpaste for say 10 minutes, should you swallow or continue spitting out saliva during this 10 minute period? What about rinsing with a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash in after the first brush with water but before applying the toothpaste?
Thank you for this video, I use to have braces and I keep finding myself brushing my teeth really hard. Which causes my gums to ache. Also I love saving water so I was shocked how easily I brushed my teeth without using a single drop! Also my gums feel amazing and my teeth are perfect! Ps. With certain toothbrushes with the bumpy back you can use that to scrape your tongue! I don't have a metal scraper which I would like to get so I opt for the bumpy part 😊
I’d recommend using an extra soft toothbrush only with this method, because it could make any gum recession worst. That’s what I noticed with my gums while using an ultra-soft oral b toothbrush but I realized it wasn’t actually soft until I tried a different brush.
The flicking motion is also good, and is a part of the "Modified Bass Technique." This is the "Bass Technique." Both are great. I plan to redo the Sonicare video since I now have one. Because the Sonicare brush head is a little smaller, I brush with it, I use the Modified Bass Technique and flick as well. =)
Wow.... I clearly need to write by hand more (or just use this technique more), because keeping my elbow in and only using hand/wrist muscles makes my hand cramp up. My teeth do feel extremely clean, though.
Thanks for detail explanation.i have been playing for the past 30yrs pretending to be brushing was just killing my gums.is like I was forced to do this things
Also, don't brush immediately after eating or drinking. You should wait atleast 30 minutes. The acid from eating and drinking will weaken your enamel and you can do more damage to the teeth than good. Better yet. Eat and drink in windows, eat xylitol after which helps the ph and the good bacteria and to neutralize plaque. Then wait then use closys ultrasensitive mouthwash which further makes the ph better. Then brush then use listerine cool mint or original to further kill bacteria and neutralize plaque in between teeth and under gums. Then finish with act restoring anticavity mouthwash. Listerine, although great Will leave your mouth acidic but finishing with the fluoride mouthwash will help restrengthen your teeth and make the ph good again. Of you floss you should do it with toothpaste still in mouth so the toothpaste has a chance to remineraluze between teeth. If you have infection, gum disease, pocketing, receding gums, cavities, etc. Flossing can make the issue worse. It can also spread infection around the mouth. Especially if you are using the same spot of floss or 1 floss pick for all your teeth. You do however need to do something about interproximal (between teeth) cavities and also the bacteria and plaque under your gums which is what the listerine and closys do. If you are going to skip on flossing you NEED to make sure you are still filling the role of floss or it WILL get worse.
Thanks does the dental floss do the same action of interdental brushes . My doctor keep forcing to using the floss but i always injures myself with interdental brushes i am ok . Thanks
Hi Dr. Is that any better way or better toothbrush that i can use to brush the back surface of my upper front teeth? I have bad staining there and couldn't get the brush to clean them.
Not a professional, but I have watch a lot of videos and the all say 2 times a day at least. Morning (one said before breakfast) and at night (wtih flossing), but it you want more, you can do it. And always remember the tongue.
Not sure what you mean, "with or without the grip." Hold the end of the toothbrush in whatever way you hold a pencil when writing. Yes, lightly grip it, so you don't put too much force on your teeth and gums.
i have a question - would you recommend a electronic toothbrush for someone who has gum recession? i was an aggressive brusher but have learned to do it more gently but still not sure if im brushing too hard sometimes...
do brush back of front teeth make protude(overbite) or buck teeth worse?(i mean by brushing at the back of front teeth, does the brushing force push front teeth to move more outwardly?)
So you use the heel of the brush for the backside of the front teeth In circular motion and not the head side? I ask because I’m afraid of more gum recession using the heel side... I have over brushed my lifetime causing so much gum recession....usually brushing for 7 minutes
Hello Doctor Denise. Thank you so much for this video. I really appreciate it. I wanted to ask you a question though. If I floss every single day and therefore manage to get rid of the left over food particles between my teeth, will it still be necessary to angle my tootbrush at a 45 degree angle towards the gumline in order to prevent tartar buildup? Is it ok in this case to just brush my teeth holding my toothbrush completely in a horizontal way?

And what about rinsing mouth afterwards? I've recetly heard that we should't use water to do so to let the paste sit on the teeth and...and what? Also should't we use mouthwash? I'm confused. Can you please explain your point of view on that? Thanks in advance :)
Wait to rinse for 30 minutes, so that the fluoride or sensitive toothpaste has more time to be absorbed. Rinsing right away removes that too quickly. As for mouthwash, it depends on what type and what you are using it for. You don't need it to freshen your breath if you have just brushed your teeth. My favorite is ACT, which is a fluoride rinse. Use mouthwash 30 minutes after you brush.
It seems intuitive that an ideal manual toothbrush has bristles that are relatively flat and of the same length along the entire brush head. Why, then, do so many toothbrushes have extra long bristles at the tip of the brush head?? These protruding long bristles prevent flush placement of the entire brush head along the tooth surfaces. I have achieved much better brushing results after trimming back longer bristles with sharp scissors.
IMurmann Dental Health I think this is not the best way, because food is clogged under the gums, the best way is sweeping movements from the gums to the edge of the tooth, what do you think about this cleaning technique?

The best explanation of brushing using manual toothbrush. Please make a tutorial video for the correct way to floss teeth too.
This is literally the best explanation ever. I asked a dentist once in my 20s and got an eyeroll! 🤣🤣🤣 so thank you so much for taking the time!

Thanks you from germany ♥
How is that gentle of brushing gna get all the food off though
Great video and well explained. Thank you!
Do you do the same thing with little kids who are learning or teaching.
Is 3 minutes still ok for someone with some gum recession if done gently ?
Thanks I subscribe that vedio inorder my kids to know properly to make their teeth and gum clean and healthy
Helo doctor Denis. if we starts from inside the mouth and finishing out isn't it is proper way ?
You don't mention behind the last molars in this video as with the other. How do you reach those surfaces effectively with a manual toothbrush?
The same way, just curve around the last tooth a little from the cheek side, and again from the side by your tongue.
Your eyes 👁️ are so beautiful
How are you removing any plaque brushing that lightly I feel like you can go a little harder then that lol
Super ADVICE !!!!!
Thanks for this efforts.

I have over brushed my lifetime causing so much gum recession....usually brushing for 7 minutes
Try to decrease the amount of time you brush to 3 minutes and that should help.
So easy when looking at it .. just have to get used it i guess :)
Practice makes perfect! In dental school we had a class where our instructors graded us on how clean out teeth were. It was a good motivator. =)

Brushing at the 45 degree angle is more gentle to the gums and allows the bristles to reach more areas. Good job on flossing every day; I do too! =)

Anything approved by the ADA as they certify that it is both safe and effective.

I brush exactly like this and my teeth can still feel a bit fuzzy :/
Try a different toothpaste. Right now my favorite is Sensodyne Rapid Relief and that makes my teeth feel very clean without making them sensitive.
Which toothbrush is good for gum and teeth also. I am using Colgate zigzag.
It seems intuitive that an ideal manual toothbrush has bristles that are relatively flat and of the same length along the entire brush head.

My guess is that a flat toothbrush is great if you are using the right technique. If you are not, then the longer bristles might help.
