Thanks for covering the PNW, they're likening this storm to the Columbus Day Windstorm which was absolutely devastating. The wind is coming from the opposite direction we're used to, from the south & east instead of north and west, because of the way it's spinning. That means places built for wind won't get it and places that aren't built for wind will. Recharge your batteries, fill your car, and top off your generator.
As someone who recently went through Helene, these steps are crucial to emergency preparation! Nearly all our flashlights were not charged, we didn't have the right type of fuel for our generators, or we had canned goods without a can manual can opener! 😅 Dont be scared as Ryan says, 'be prepared!'
We usually get winter winds with storms from the south and south west, not the north. This week will be absolutely nothing like the Columbus Day storm in ‘62… nobody is saying that.

One big storm is a single data point, 20 big storms give us a trend. Plenty of data out there now showing the change in trends. Those summaries of the original IPCC reports have been surprisingly accurate despite cable news claiming the opposite--50 yr storms are now 10 yr storms in many locations. Newport, Oregon here. We are forecasting 60 mph winds, which for us is a typical fall/winter wind storm. As a landscaper, we will still be out servicing all of our properties during said storm.
Thank you for covering this. Im in Western WA and it did hit pretty hard last night with winds topping 100mph and very heavy rains. Over all we came out pretty good, 100k+ lost power and at least 1 fatality. IDK if its the different forest compositions but we fared much better than those in NC did with flooding and landslides. Here in WA the narrow valleys and mountain streams that recieved the heaviest rains are very lightly if at all populated and those that are have experienced flooding many times and most know when to bug out. My thoughts and prayers for all that were or will be affected by this.
Ryan, I'm pleasantly surprised to hear you mention the West Coast. Cascade mountain "gap winds" are also going to be a big factor today. Super low pressure out over the ocean, High pressure inland. Put a 5000-14,000 foot mountain range between the High and the Low, and you get winds that come rushing through the lower gaps (i.e. the mountain passes). Kind of like how downtowns with tall buildings can be wind tunnels, but on a much bigger scale. At least in Washington, that's likely to be a big story. It's going to impact a lot more people in the Seattle area. The coast here is pretty sparsely populated, because the weather sucks a lot of the time. I live North of Monroe, WA in the path of the Cascade Gap Wind outflow from Stevens Pass (US Hwy 2) and it can get pretty wild here. Even worse down by Enumclaw. My house is surrounded by 150' evergreen trees. Giving serious thought to spending the night tonight downstairs just in case!
Hope you and trees made it through the storm without incidence. I live on the water on Vancouver Island and face West. I was surprised and relieved that I had less winds than I expected. Friends of mine in Ladysmith on the East side of the Island experienced a true hurricane. Lost power and were quite terrified. Up here we call those winds catabatic winds. When it comes to weather, we’re all in this together. Be safe.🇨🇦
Well, we are traveling there from the east, and hid out in Arkansas last night because of the weather in central TX, only to face this mess, we may be hanging out in sunny but cold AZ for a day or three and hope my family, neighbors and friends are all unscathed!
I live in north bay San Francisco, and yes, we do get hurricanes, but only about once every 10-15 years. I was living in the CIty during the hurricane 0f 1995, with 100 mph winds. Golden Gate Park lost something like 20 percent of its trees, and the Conservatory of Flowers had all of its 33,000 glass panes blown out. Fortunately I have the day off tomorrow. Thanks for covering us!
For years, meteorologists were Not Allowed to issue Tornado Warnings....why ? Because they might scare people ! Better they get killed, than warned.....the first meteorologist to issue a Tornado warning was the Legendary Harry Volkman, in 1954, when he was in Oklahoma City.....Harry was in Oklahoma for 9 years, from 1950 to 1959....and in Chicago, from 1959 til 2004...45 years !!! 54 years of service and saved Many lives, a True American Hero 🇺🇸
You've got it backwards. The station manager wants to sell advertisements so he wants to scare the viewers into not changing the channel. And when he heard the weatherman mention "bombogenesis" he saw dollar signs. Dollars to donuts one or more of the nightly prime time news tonight will run a segment tonight where they keep pushing this but won't talk about it until right at the end of the program for a total of 45 seconds.

Station manager to the weatherman "Don't try to get people all riled up, ok?" Weatherman looking for another term for.... BOMB CYCLONE 😐😐😐
Too bad the weather Channel, Fox Weather, CNN, NBC NEWS and others all are reporting the same thing! He's informing, not riling folks up!
@jack002tuber I know this is a potentially dangerous situation here...but your comment did make me lol.
@@johnwolfe2616 I'm just picturing people who just tuned in to hear the words bomb cyclone is all.
We rely on you in the PNW for the most accurate reports on our weather! You are the best at it! THANK YOU!!
The amount of DREAD that I feel when I hear the word SNOW 😫 HATE IT
I've decided to move to Florida cause I hate snow and cold so much.
@ I would do the same but all my family live in Ohio and I don’t want to move far away from them. Maybe when they all pass away I’ll finally make the move to warmer weather.
Well I don't care for snow, but I hate icy roads. I only care about snow coming in appropriate times, especially November, December, January or February
@@jetmccabe5339 I wouldn’t move to Florida though because I don’t want to deal with the hurricanes lmao. I’ll move to another warm area 🤣
@@zachsmith1634 I'm more used to states with a cold climate
So my family & I lived in Seattle in 1962 & 63. The Columbus Day storm of 62 was the largest storm to hit Seattle. It was a Cat 3. Can u imagine not knowing this was coming in 😮
