The only redeeming quality of this anime is all the japanese mythology. It's depressing how so many anime dont get dubbed because some executives looked at it and said "ehhhh... its a little TOO Japanesy, lets just buy the licensing rights to another Pokemon knockoff". Last week i found a cool anime that i can best describe as "House of Cards, in Japan" but i couldnt even find a subbed version, and i ended up finding a forum where people were discussing the anime and they basiclly said that "no one wanted to license it because it was heavily focused on *Japanese* politics and they were afraid to take a risk in case Americans couldnt identfy with the Japanese political system". I see the same thing happen with some anime based on Shintoism or Asian literature.
Actually this OVA was based on a manga that appeared on Shounen Jump in 1976. Megami Tensei first book came in 1986. So calling it even a Shin Megami Tensei knock off is invalid.

Basically, Grasscutter is a Tsurugi (or ancient Japanese double-edged straight bladed sword) that was found in the tail of the Yamato-No-Orochi. One swing of it creates bladelike gusts of wind that can cut anything in its path. It was used to cut down burning long grass to extinguish the flames and save its wielder, Yamato Takeru, from being burned alive. In other words, it sits near the top of the "Coolest swords in mythology" heap. In other words, this series had the opportunity to make awesome action scenes with a windblade-slinging sword, but chose to yammer on.
Sooo... He collects the Imperial Regalia why again? I mean those were obviously the three treasures, but he doesn't even do anything with them when he goes God Mode? What was this a History Channel special with a little bit of gore and swarming Gollums attached to it?

Well, yeah. It's Japanese mythology. It's not suitable for an American dub (or audience, unless you include a guidebook). It was almost certainly made by Japanese people *for* Japanese people. And your homeland mythology is pretty easy to sell in your homeland because the target audience will be familiar with the material. Mind you, I haven't seen this anime myself and I'm not Japanese, but I think this can be compared with National Treasure in a way. It's national history wank, essentially. And thus easily marketable domestically because just like all Americans will be at least somewhat familiar with the Founding Fathers, all Japanese will be at least somewhat familiar with the Bamboo Princess.

Oh my god, MAZE: Megaburst Space. My memory will never forget *spoiler* Gorgeous the Beautiful. Oh yes, there's a character unironically named Gorgeous the Beautiful. It's THAT kind of anime. This episode was only 17m but if MAZE runs under 40m, Bennet just won't have spent enough time unpacking all the absolute batshit insanity in that amazing, unforgettable anime.
I find it just idiotic why would you cram all this mythology into two OVA episodes, it’s like doing the whole Trojan War or Odyssey in the same time. Although I find the first trance walk with Takeshi to be an interesting take how to use negative space in animation, those hibernation rock eggs are cool as an idea and the music is very good (especially the credit theme), thanks to Ghost in the Shell composer Kenji Kawai.
I dunno, man, I didn't mind my art history courses, maybe I'd dig this thing. ... Or, maybe I could watch that Rakugo anime I've heard so well-reviewed instead!
I currently am the one in my circle of friends to own all of Maze on DVD somewhere. Because we keep palming it off, not wanting to just throw away a full DVD set, and... But no one wants it. No one. I wonder how he's going to handle the fact that the plot exists in the first episode or two, then just sort of... Drops and ignores itself to go on as though the preliminary plot never happened later.

This OVA was a short manga adaptation that appeared on Shonen Jump in 1976 and reading some of it, it is very faithful to the source material. So in the end the problem was the original author because it is a big infodumb but with some nice ideas.
