Truly, it's a neat little area control game (one of my favourite board game mechanisms).

Hey guys... I backed this game on KS the same day I saw it. I have a love for odd times and topics. Themes like The Russian Revolution and Civil War, and The Mexican Revolution aren't well remembered or thought of too much... so I'm interested in how they are translated into board games. Great review... keep up the great work.

I wouldn't put the two in the same bag to be honest... The Russian Revolution (and the Civil War that followed-the third bloodiest conflict of the 20th century) had massive and direct consequences not just for Russia but for the whole world (WW2, Cold War...), so it's usually better remembered and more widely taught in schools throughout the world than the Mexican revolution. It's actually one of those few world events that everybody learns a little bit about regardless of nationality. In games though, there's no question that the Russian Civil War is under-represented, especially compared to the American Civil War, which probably has a lot to do with the fact that the majority of wargame designers are American.

I'm not 100% sure if you were already playing it correctly but I believe you only get a bonus action if you land directly on 15 or 29-31.

I believe they were. I recall them saying it was easier to get at the end of the month.

The box art remind me of an old Avalon Hill or 3M bookcase game.

You guys should try "Las Barracades" from Compass Games... Spanish Civil War, Tactical level combat, great production quality.

Is the graphic design meant to be based on Soviet revolutionary art?

    Very solid review. That said,
This game offers the opportunity to fight on the Bolsheviks side, or the conservative socialists side? Well, It's apparent who's publishing these games, isn't it? Challenge: please find me a boardgame which permits me to cripple Bolshevism in its infancy, or even to defeat them in the Russian civil war (and please don't reference Triumph of Chaos). This game and others (ie Soviet Dawn) should include the option of fighting on the Czar side and/or anti socialists.

More intense, but check out Reds! from GMT, it's by Ted Racier.

So with your long-standing appreciation of CDGs and your newfound love for the Russian revolution, I imagine we’re going to see a review of the just-released Triumph of Chaos 2nd edition in the coming weeks... Maybe?
