La Famiglia: The Great Mafia War - Just Played!

- We made ourselves an offer we couldn't refuse, and four of us sat down to play La Famiglia. It's a deep and heavy area control experience--none of which typically appeals to any of us. But we were in for a surprise. This is "event gaming" if we ever saw it, but was it an event that we want to come back to? We share our thoughts, and discuss who we think this game is for...and for others, maybe not so much.

I love how after years of yelling for more team games I’ve now received Guards of Atlantis 2, war of the ring the card game and now this. Can’t wait to get this played!

@@meeple Really loved our first play. Playing again tonight. 1 new person. I ordered LaFlamiglia. It’s a situational game for sure, but it sure has a lot of interesting gameplay and concepts.

The game is interesting for sure! I had terrible learning experience though. It is layers on layers on layers. DO NOT "let's play and see how it works".
Now that I knoe the game whould gladly play it again though
That is very good advice. I rarely every "play and see how it works" but this one in particular could be rough that way.

Looks really great. I have small world and inis as area control game but they do not hit the table at all somehow.
I am currently interested in pax pamir and la famiglia but I can't decide.... Earth also looks great...

Hi, do you think there any variations that can be made to make it slightly easier and faster?
This sounds a lot like a COIN game to me like Cuba Libre, Fire in the Lake, etc.
While it doesn’t share many of the same mechanisms, I felt the same way playing it for some reason. It just has that vibe.
Is this game so heavy that it would be hard to teach new people? I have some players that might be interested, but they tend to check out If the game is highly complicated or the rules teach is long
I'd be lying if I said it was a simple teach. What is the tipping point for your group? What would you say is the heaviest game that you've gotten away with teaching them successfully?
@@meeple Well, Grand Austria hotel was just on the cusp. They complained at first but halfway through they loved it. And Great Western trail was too much for them, though I love it. Is it more than the godfather: Corleone's empire? (Which I also love)
@@eliumeldritch Well....this one might be a bit much. It's definitely on the heavier side of the games you mentioned. However, if there's one other in addition to you who can take on the heavier stuff, this IS a team game, so you might be able to work it out with just two of you on board as the team leaders so to speak.
@@meeple oh that's an excellent point! I hadn't considered that. I do have one other guy who likes heavier games and could probably help his teammate out

Looks like there's a ton of iconography, how difficult was it to navigate and keep straight?
Looks far more overwhelming than it is in practice. The color coding helps that a lot too-categorizing various actions.

Man, I think this may be a pass for me. The team aspect is strange to me - I’d rather do my own thing. The lack of planning is a turn off. Whatever was going on with the cards and as you put it mind games isn’t appealing. 3+ hours is a ask and it better be a game you enjoy to warrant that time. I’ll give most games a go. We will see.
