    I bought one when they first came out and I was in a death metal band at the time. All the other local guitarists in other bands thought I was mad and laughed at me saying "you know it's Eddie Van Halen's signature amp, right? How heavy is that going to sound?". They stopped laughing pretty quickly when they heard it though...

      Hah! That is awesome. I can't think of too many other amps I'd rather play in a death metal band. Thanks a bunch for checking out the video!

      @@ZachWish Besides another Peavey lol. Peavey VTM 120(Based on Jose modded Marshall's with tons of gain on tap), Peavey Ultra 120 teal stripe(Peavey's take on a Mesa Mark, And one of my personal favorite high gain amps), Peavey Ultra+(Revised version of the teal stripe), Peavey XXX( Crunch channel has the equal gain to your 5150 II lead channel, but doesn't need any pedals or boost), Peavey JSX(Joe Satriani Sig head, Ultra channel is the XXX Crunch refined) .. All these mentioned Peavey heads can all do heavy modern metal and death metal tones. And do it very well, and all James Brown designed high gain Peavey's.

    • @untoldguitarist
      @untoldguitarist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Gret Beard. Because so many players are clueless about James Brown designed high gain Peavey era. Even Fender was smart enough to have him design their 5153 head's. So if it wasn't for James Brown none of the new Fender EVH 5153's would sound the way they do.

      @@untoldguitarist III is a modded II, II is a modded original. with each iteration they took out more of the low end coming into the preamp which made the amps sound boosted inherently. its sad you can't turn this off to get it roar like the original in my opinion. they sounds a bit too honky and cocked wah pedal like, a bit too refined. there's a mod for II to revert it back the original though, its an easy 3 component swap

      The same thing happened when the Iconic came out. The typical online morons started yapping.... turns out the Iconic is nuts. And compares pretty favorably with enough differences to make it a viable alternative or even addition to a 5150 OG, the 5150 ii, 6505, 5150iii etc. And all that at like half the price.

    the other guitarist in my college band had the mark 2 5150. I plugged into it for 2 minutes and knew it was the amp for me.
    I never got one, but I did get a 6505+ after EVH left Peavey, which I understand is the same circuit. It definitely gives me the sound I was looking for. Had it ten years now... I don't even own another amp (though I am looking at maybe adding a cleaner-style amp to my rig and using both. No pedals that I've ever found give me that 5150-lead channel sound, so a 5150-type will always have a place in my rig)!

    This guy's playing does this amp a lot of justice. I've owned one of these heads for around 20 years. I bought it brand new because I was a huge fan of E.V.H and I saw Gary Holt using one live. I figured I couldn't go wrong. I have never liked it. I've ran it through Marshall and Mesa cabs, tried several overdrive and eq pedals with it and still cannot get it to sound good to me. It just collects dust while I jam away on my Marshall JCM 2000 TSL100. I prefer the late 80s scooped thrash sound and this amp just sounds muffled and too mid-rangey. I'm going to hang on to it though because maybe someday I'll find a use for it.

    Zach, do you modded the amp? (bias mod) or were you using a bb preamp with the lead channel for all the parts? Thanks

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No mods on this one, all stock. I have the BB Preamp on for most of the video. You can hear at 0:49 the difference between the lead channel with and without the pedal. It's not really changing the sound much, just adding a hair of saturation and tightening up the bottom end a bit. Thanks so much for watching!

    Hey Zack which amp do you prefer between the OG 5150 , or the 5150 ii ? is the 2 tighter bottom end and higher mids ?

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been a long time since I've played them back to back but I remember the differences being pretty subtle. Wouldn't say that I have a strong preference one way or the other. I use the crunch channel boosted a lot, so it's nice to have the dedicated EQ for that on the 5150 II, but you could get a really similar sound out of the OG. I'd have put them on an amp switcher to say confidently. I find that if you're in the ballpark tonally of where you want to be, it's nothing that a little EQ in a recorded or live mix couldn't account for. Thanks for watching!

    How loud have you turned the amp up to get these sounds? Im getting one of these this week and am a little curious if I’ll ever be able to play it at my house

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The amp was pretty loud in this video, maybe the same volume as a pretty loud drum set. You can get pretty decent sounds out of this amp at lower volumes, but it definitely loves to be turned up a bit. A sound I really like with lower volumes is the Clean Channel with both the Crunch & Bright buttons pressed in, Gain on 10, and then hit it with a boost like a tube screamer or boss SD-1. The lead channel can sound a little bit fizzy if the amp isn't loud enough. Great amp though. Thanks for checking out the video!
