    Stuart, very practical items for Motto camping. I just ordered the roll up camping table after watching this video. Thank you..

    3 years late have just seen your video. A really good selection of gear. I would agree totally regarding the need for a 3 man tent. If it starts to rain (and at some time it will!) there is a lot of riding gear to get into the tent with you.
    One point worth noting about tents is that some are erected with inner tent first and then you add the waterproof outer layer, other tents are the other way round ( or like mine the inner and outer tent are erected together). When the weather is fine it makes no difference but if its raining as you pitch the tent you really want the outer waterproof layer up first.
    Mattresses : - I agree 50 to 75mm is far more comfortable than 25mm but to save weight and bulk its worth looking at 3/4 length mattresses. I also have one of those cheap dimpled airbeds that are now widely available. Very light, very quick to inflate and very comfortable but watch out if the weather/ground is chilly - they conduct away your body heat far faster than the self inflating foam mattresses.
    Cooking:- I always used to cook with gas until someone loaned me a Trangia set and a bottle of bio ethanol (B&Q). Trangia was developed for Scandinavian military and you can tell! It contains the heat far better than any other camp cooker I have ever used and heats things up ultra fast especially in windy weather.
    You didn't mention washing up gear which will of course be needed. As a luxury I also carry silicone collapsible bowl which comes in handy for various other functions.
    Water bottles. I use one of those 10L roll-up water bags and hang it off the handle bars on site. ( but they are a pain to dry out properly). I have also found that a 2L lemonade bottle makes a good water bottle and collapses down really small if you suck out all of the air and then roll it up.
    Washing:- getting towels to dry can sometimes be a pain. Take one of those flat rectangular kitchen sponges in your wash kit. When you have showered, a quick wipe with the sponge will get you 80% dry which means your towel only gets wet with the remaining 20%.
    If you are camping late season you may well find yourself cooking in fading light. I cheap head torch gives grest light and leaves 2 hands free.
    I hope some of your readers find these additional comments a help. Getting out camping on your bike is just brilliant!
    And one final tip from a year I went camping at Easter and the night turned out to be very much colder than anticipated, You can keep your head warm by sleeping in your crash helmet and jt also doubles as a pretty comfortable pillow. Maybe The Stig was right all along!
    Happy camping.

    Hi Stu, yet again another top quality video and very useful. Whilst watching this a thought came to mind which explains why I enjoy your videos so much - I REALLY felt like I got to know and understand the products you illustrated/demonstrated to the extent that I achieved sufficient experience to make a buying decision. This is extremely rare in todays world of internet or 'at a distance' purchasing.
    Very useful, very well done. Cheers, Dave
    PS Loved the music !!!

      Thank you David, I appreciate your kind words! Its easy to stand in your dining room/garage or garden with a camera to review something but I believe that people really need to see a product in action where its intended to be used, to get a true idea of its worth. It means a lot to me that you appreciate my efforts! thanks once again for watching and for your comment sir!

    Good bedroom, as always and some useful advice. I also watched you video on the Goose Travelman tent; a good product. After thinking about the comparison I’d probably buy a stand alone larger tent (for extra room, comfort and convenience, and take an extra tarpaulin to throw over the bike or use as extra ground proofing. I’ll take your advice about that mattress!

    Hallo Stuart I have just discovered your channel . Great videos. Regarding your equipment, I always say that one must carry what makes you comfortable. I do not quibble on whether it’s too much or to little. One must be comfortable unless, of course, you are travelling with a pillion . Ride safe. Alessandro, Italy

    Thanks for taking the time to get this show-n-tell of your gear up here. I'm most drawn to those Trekology wares. In the little weekend motorcycle camping I've done recently, like up to the Triumph & Royal Enfield National Rally in Oley, PA in June, I've just bought a regular ultra-cheapo folding hammock-style folding chair for $5 or so at Walmart or some nearby supermarket while stocking up provisions, using it for the weekend, and then just giving it to someone, since they're a tad bulky to haul back home to Virginia on my Indian-made Royal Enfield Bullet 500. Judging by your choice in incidental music, maybe you should look into getting a nice old Indian thumper yourself! Anyhow, thanks again for the tips!
    By the way, If you want to read about some of the doodads and other gear I've found useful, take a look at this Royal Enfield Forum thread: forum.classicmotorworks.com/index.php/topic,26192.msg301469.html#msg301469

    Hi nice video .For the water i use a camel bag( or hike drink bag) that has 2L of water in it and i use it to drink when i am driving or for cooking when i stop .For the table i use my hard back pack ( 45 L ) lid when it is open and i put some thin wood under the stove .

    Regarding the pillow, I usually just take a pillow case and stuff it with clothes I'm not wearing, jacket and whatever's lying around that halfway soft. Sleep on my side too and it gives plenty of support plus saves on weight and pack volume and is (in my opinion) far more comfortable than inflatable pillows.

    Hi Stuart,
    Thanks for some very sensible and interesting pointers and kit recommendations.
    What's even better is that you say what hasn't worked for you, and why to stay away from some items.
    Must confess after many trips away walking, mountain bike, motorbike and Land Rover ranging from 50 to 5,000 miles +, I have ended up looking for smaller and lighter kit, even on my motorbike. Mainly because if I carry that way, it allows me some leeway on the extras / luxuries we sometimes feel we can't do without. The small axe, the extra 3x3 tarp etc.
    But thanks from Lincolnshire and maybe we'll cross roads out there.
    Cheers,
    stephen

    Thanks for the nice video! I once had cut a sidestand pad from a piece of plexiglass and visited a cemetery, forgot it onto the parking place and maybe some living soul took it... Then, I added a piece of elastic rope to it and now it's kind of easy to drag the pad under the sidestand without having to bend over - and then attach the other end of the rope to left handlebar so when continuing riding it is easy to remember/fish up and place it into pocket... Seems there was something red there in the grass after you left... :) I sure wish I could camp again in a tent!

    Suggestion. I watched, haven’t tried yet but plan to, watched a motorcycle camper from Australia and he had a good tip to try for people like us that sleep on sides and have problem squirming off off our mats, restless etc.. What he does before he sets up his tent, he digs a shallow trench about 6 inches wide and little wider than width of sleeping pad, then sets up tent and foot print, places tent over with pad over etc... trench, this allows restful sleep on your side with no pressure to hips and he claims that it keeps pad and bag in place all night. He claims he does this every time he tent camps for a good night rest. I plan to try it myself cause I always wake with sore hips otherwise, hope this helps.

    I have a Phad2 looks just like that. great tent. I use a Synmat 7 air mattress. Not self inflatable but it's very comfortable. I have a self inflator, no comparison. You will never feel the ground on the Synmat 7. Sleep on air. Also have an inflatable pillow. Those two items are very small. All my sleeping gear fits in one saddlebag. Down sleeping bag from Mountaintop, 32F Ultralight. packs very small. Cool max liner. Very small but effective. keeps you warm in the bag or use it and lay on top of the bag when it's hot. keeps bag clean.

    Hi Stuart. nice video. I'm a paraglider pilot and cyclist so tend to be into light camping bags and so on. When doing hiking and flying trips we don't want to carry much stuff. I have really had very few problems with getting comfortable on good quality but smaller thermarests. These offer good insulation and a small pack size. I use a thinner lighter bag but can with a silk liner to give added insulation. There are probably lighter tents too such as 1.5kg single hoop tents from Terra Nova and others. I've had a terra nova tent for many years, totally bombproof. I'm just getting into motorbiking so am on a 125 for now, hope to be on a tour on a bigger machine some day.

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brian, i do have a smaller mattress from trekology now which is pretty comfortable. just bear in mind when bike camping that you do need to keep some pretty bulky equipment in your tent at night helmet riding clothes etc plus your luggage, so smaller tents can be a major headache. i personally wouldn't like to bike camp in a tent any smaller than the one i have its totally full once ive got my gear under cover. thanks for watching and for your comment sir!

    Take a look at the Thermarest Neoair Dream sleeping pad. It's thick, comfortable and offers very good insulation and it takes up less than half the bulk of your pad. Expensive but worth it in my opinion. I'm generally a three bag camper myself on the bike. Khyam Biker tent. A dry bag with my sleeping pad and quilt and a couple of pillows. The Trekology inflatable pillow takes up no space at all and I add an old foam camping pillow for the extra comfort. Third bag is for everything else including beer!

      The two "taller" tents I'm interested in are the Kelty Salida 4 and the Robens Green Cone 4 man tent, the latter one having 1.85 metres headroom dead centre.
      I much enjoyed your video, Stuart, and am studying quite a number of this type of presentation to improve my knowledge of motorcycle camping before spending too blindly.

    Had an idea pop into mind that may help with your slippery mattress. Perhaps place some strips of hockey tape (not sure what the uk equivalent would be) along the mattress, as long as it sticks to the mat I think that would probably do the trick or at least help a little.

    Great video Stuart, thanks for taking the time to make this, I know you were unsure it was a good idea, but lots of good tips and ideas. Set up on the bike looks secure and balanced.I'm assuming you would also have the Triumph panniers attached for 'non-camping gear?On the photography gear, many 'vloggers' seem to put it in a top box 'sponged out' like a camera carry case, did you consider this as you already have the rack fitted? (Incidentally, not a great lover of top boxes myself and reckon your set up would be my choice.) TCRSLooking forward to the touring video's.

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul thanks for watching and for your comment, I'm not keen on top boxes either and the LOMO tail pack is cheaper and easier to remove all my camera gear is protective cases anyway so it should be ok in a spill!
      I wont be using the panniers for touring as they are not waterproof and soon get ruined if it rains hence the LOMO bags.
      The bike handles just fine with all the gear loaded up I just turned the preload one notch on the cam.

      Hi Nige, thanks for watching, Good question! I used to, but while I still have road side recovery with triumph I don't bother anymore. If I'm going to be away for a few days I will take a tyre gauge and some chain lube, but that's about it.

    There's a 4p tent by Marmot: It is a Marmot Tungsten Ultralight tent that weighs in at only six pounds.(You may want to check it out). I am into bicycle touring and our goal is compact and lightweight gear (since human power is exuded). Other awesome camping gear brands are; Hyke & Byke, Sea to Summit, Big Agnes tents, Trekology, and Nature Hike. There are other low costing and awesome camp gear (do engine searches on E-bay for various products) and you'll find a lot of neat camping gear. I have been interested also into participating in motorcycle camping, (maybe in the near future. ) so all the advice is helpful. Happy Motor camping :)

    I actually use a inflatable air matress, like the ones you have for guests at home. I also have a small high volume low preassure air pump running on 12v. It beats sleeping on one of those self inflaters and it actually takes less space and weight(at least for when I bring my wife to be, since we'd need two), than a self inflater. Other than that (and you don't bring any tools and rain gear??) I like your style, keep it simple, don't bring your whole garage.

    Informative video....
    I would recommend a Big Agnes Park series sleeping bag. It has a sleeve underneath which you slide your sleeping mat and a pocket in the hood for a pillow.
    P
    They come in a variety of sizes and temperature ratings. I am a big guy and got the Elk Park from Big Agnes which has the lowest temperature rating which is down to about -25 celsius, a good choice for camping and overlanding in winter in Iceland. But they do have sleeping bags suited for warmer climates.
    The bags for colder climates are however quite large and would maybe take up too much space on your bike. Then I would look at the warmer climate bags....
    Big Agnes is based in Colorado so its a US company but I think they would have no problem shipping to the UK.
    Best regards from Iceland....

    Hi Stuart - another fantastic video Sir and very informative. I really do think your videos are into the realms of Ridley Scott now - the quality is just so good. Picked up some great tips and some equipment I've not seen before. Like you I use a 3-person tent on my own - it soon fills up with kit etc. The T120 looked nicely balanced with the bags you had on and I have to say better minus the panniers? Thank you again for a great video, informative commentary and quality filming. On a final note what was the background music? I'm sure I recognised it - very 'Gladiatoresque'!

      Hi Stuart - It's a toss up between the one you recommended and the Go-Pro 5 Session. Just trying to work out if the things I want to capture off-bike will work with which camera. Did you use the Sony to film this weeks video? The quality is incredible! Riding to Brecon and back today but on Tiger Sport 1050 as the T120 is in for her first service. All the best sir!

      no u use a dslr or HD video camera for that sort of work, The Sony records on a much higher rate video container than the Go pro and both the lens and cmos sensor are much higher quality, does the session 5 have stabilisation?

    Hi mate my set up is very similar to yours only different brands. If I'm only going for one night. I use a swag with my bedding inside the swag instead of a tent. The side stand foot I have attached some cord to it, so I can place or retrieve it while still on the bike. Good job with your videos, they seems custom made for my viewing.

    Why don't you fit a 12v cigarette socket to the bike, and use the bike battery to charge phone ext and pump air bed as you don't like that self inflating ice rink?.. and you can pump your tyres if you need to anywhere. . In any emergency. The camping towel is not a good towel, as absorbent as plastic. For a pillow, I use the bag the tent comes in, put your jacket in it. Best wishes..

    Hello Stuart !
    i would recommend carrying a repair tube for fixing a potential broken tent pole (wind damage) and some duct tape. Essentially the tape that repairs all sorts.
    Also, try making a diy CHAIR "anti-sink" device from some old cordura fabric...just cut a piece to cover the chair area and fold the corners back and stitch the edges up, to make open pockets for the chair feet.
    Another idea is a pot cozy made from some foil bubble wrap and tape ...keeps food warm while the brew is on the go.
    A larger piece makes a good stove wind shield too !
    A nylon cover keeps tree sap off your bike and hides it from prying eyes.
    Better still, take a silnylon tarp to cook under or pack gear under when it decides to rain - small pack for the benefits it brings...

    Why take all the cooking gear? You have a motorbike. Hot food is unlikely to be more than about 15 minutes away.

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now that wouldn't really be getting in to the spirit of moto camping , would it?

    • @manoova
      @manoova 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it depends on how you see the ride/camp balance. Whether you're out there to experience the ride and riding in wild places; whether the bike is just a tool to get you to your camp spot; or something in between. For me, it's the former. The camping is a necessary evil due to either cost, unavailability of accommodation, or, with my set up and where I ride, it's just better than most other available accommodation options. But when it comes to food, if I have a motorbike, I can almost always find better ready-made food than whatever I'm able to knock up on those toy pots and pans. Also, I find carrying all that gear, plus food (and washing up) is a pain. I have minimal cooking gear with one pot and a foldable cup for tea, and a few packs of noodles and dried soups, etc for when I find myself really far out there.
      I think it's useful to remind people that having a motor vehicle allows you to significantly reduce your load (I use one bag plus tank bag for cameras), which makes the riding, especially off-road, so much better. Unfortunately, it's the 'spirit' that has people wobbling along with massive packs that, literally, include the kitchen sink. And wasn't the point of your film to show how to travel lighter?
