Took me a couple of years to fully appreciate my Switch. I’d go as far as to say it’s my favorite console in the last couple of years ever since the Ps3 came out. I always play docked on my desktop and it’s small form factor is always ready to go in an instant with tons of games from old to new. It gets way more time than my Ps5 which is basically collecting dust.
As a fan of beat em ups, river city girls and fight n rage. Another hidden gem is banner of the maid. Felt like a spiritual successor to jean d'arc on psp.
Ever play Jamestown+? Amazing shmup set in a steampunk alternate history with customizable weapons and up to 4 players. Great fun with friends since you only lose a life when all players are dead, so you can essentially have one person carry you through if you really want to. Amazing Neo Geo-inspired art and a hard symphonic soundtrack. Had loads of fun playing it when it first came out on Steam and since it wasn't crazy difficult (at least at first), it's what got me into the genre.
I'm new to your channel but I'm already binging through your videos, there's something about your videos that has the "uncle you visited to play games and tells a storytime about their antique collections" feel. Your discussions on these topics and personal history/experience with them alongside some non-exaggerated gags you slipped in (which just fits well with your style of presentation) are super entertaining and funny. Keep up the great work!
I just started playing this game a week or so ago, after it pleasantly popped up in my new PS+ Premium options for the month. I tried to use the Taunt to see how it worked and it did nothing for me. I'm playing Story on Gnarly, so maybe that has something to do with it.
I am a physical collector but I thought it would be worth mentioning that with Mushihimesama’s limited physical release, the digital version is 35% off on the eShop until 7/7/23. Love your content! Keep up the great work!
I'm slowly amassing a good sized bread bag clip collection, I never realised how cool they were before I started watching your videos, now I have a rare Australian gluten free bread bag clip I'd like to trade with you for some American clips, are you interested?
Love how TMNT: Shredder's Revenge was made for Retro Players! Retro Games just Respect Your Time. Always be on the alert is how I like to play! That is why your Thumb twitches! Retro Games bring you on the brink of anxiety, so you have to take breaks & calm down. You hardly get that kind of rush with newer games.
I sure wish I could go back to my college days (circa mid-2000's) when my dorm suite-mates and I would smoke, drink fresh, cold Yuenglings (the brewery wasn't too far away), and play the crap out of Super Smash Bros. Melee and Capcom vs. SNK 2 on the PS2 for hours on end...much simpler times.
"What was your favorite Retro Bird experience?" When he made a post about Shredder's Revenge coincidentally on the same day I played that game for the very first time. I'm never gonna forget that 😂
Fantastic list! Couldn’t agree more on your picks, except steel assault which I haven’t played yet, but now it’s on the list! I would also add a game called Huntdown. It’s an awesome retro style run n’ gun
Great video! I think I already mentioned them in your last video but the *Bloodstained* games (Curse of the Moon and Ritual of the Night) are excellent picks if you have enjoyed the NES Castlevania games or Metroidvanias like Symphony of the Night. And, sadly, I haven't played Okami as of yet. It is currently sitting in my backlog, so I will try to play it as soon as I can. It looks really good and I've heard great things about it.
Antonball Deluxe and Annalynn are two of my favorite modern-retro games, and both are on Switch! Antonball is a really fun cross between Mario Bros., Wario Land, and Breakout, all with a really nice GBA inspired aesthetic. Annalynn is a combination of mechanics from Donkey Kong Jr. and Pac-Man and has a very early 80s Namco arcade aesthetic. It’s incredibly fun and addicting and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who loves games from that era.
I'm still working on Okami. I've now played it on the PS2 years ago, and currently on my Switch in HD form. It definitely looks better rin handheld mode, than on my 4K though. Eyesore literally lol. Maybe one day I'll actually beat what truly is a great game. Man, I can't even imagine that getting a modern day remake for 4K with that art style.
@@Xoulrath_ I'm happy to hear that you're giving it another shot! Although I recommend just playing it for as long as you're having fun, no need to force yourself to finish it if you're satisfied with how much you played so far!
These are excellent choices for sure. Each one of these games I've either played or are planning to play now. As an avid Retro Gamer these games hit all the right bells for me.
I know it came out on the Switch 4 years ago, but Yooka Laylee and The Impossible Liar is platforming perfection. That and Kaze and the Wild Masks would be my picks
Both excellent picks, especially for fans of the DKC series! Definitely recommend playing both on a pro controller (or something similar), with the Switch lacking a real d-pad
@loz_lifer13 yeah I completely agree about the pro controller. I pretty much use it any chance I can over joy-cons. I really can't stand the feel of joy-cons. Far too small, and no d-pad is really a turn off. Definitely not made for those with big hands, and the "controller" they combine to make is a joke.
I don't think that it's necessary for the SNES, but to get that Genesis 3 button feel, yeah it'll be worth it. I need to get the N64 controller so that I can actually play Ocarina of Time again. The button layout on the Pro controller is awful.
Squidlit and it’s sequel are great for those who are looking for a modern 1 to 1 Game Boy recreation. Squidlit 1 is short and sweet, but the devs really went all out with Super Squidlit!
Amazing video, as always! I finished okami, I still have it and want to replay, when you finish it you get a new costume with brown fur, so I want to do it all over again in a new fur coat!
I still haven't finished Okami either. I've played about 2/3rds of the way through it multiple times. I definitely want to finish it one of these days.
Haven't finished Okami, but I've been dying to. Added it to my Wii collection a couple years ago and have been looking forward to playing it as soon as I have a bit more free time.
I absolutely LOVE retro games. My only complaint is their difficulty level. As an adult in their mid 40s I don't have the time (or the drive) to spend hours getting good at a game. Which is why I typically trend now towards more casual games, games that have been re-released with save states, cheat devices or emulation in which cheats can be added. Heck, even something like Mega Man is an exercise in frustration and I quickly pass on it even though it scratches that nostalgia itch if only for a minute. But throw in a session of Advance Wars and I'm hooked.
Dang, that sucks. I'm actually finding myself on the opposite end of that problem. I'm mid-40s as well (46) and I've got loads of time that I didn't have before. My kid is an adult approaching her mid-20s. She has a life of her own. I've just got the one. I'm also divorced and have been apart from my ex for over 11 years now. I'm still single. All I've got is time lol. I've actually been playing Shredder's Revenge over the past week, and doing so on Gnarly. I've been loving the game and the challenge. Aside from the absolute cheap hits that should have been left in the 90s that is. But yeah, it's definitely seen me playing stages over half a dozen times. On the flip side of that, it's great that a game like this is now released with difficulty options for those like yourself who can't spare the time, so that you can still enjoy them. Gaming is honestly getting better in a lot of ways, despite all of the negatives that go along with modern gaming. Cheers.
If you're a fan of 2D Zelda games, give Ocean's Heart a try. It's on steam and switch. For the true retro experience, find and opt into hard mode 👀 -an Okami finisher and enjoyer

What I really love about this series is to find gems I have maybe overseen, which is easy nowadays by this flood of new releases every month or even week. I also see a kind of importance for these kind of videos. On the one hand, it shows the industry that for retro style games there is a market. On the other hand, younger generations receive some background knowledge on which games these are based on which can build a bridge waking their interest to try older consoles or the games predecessors. To put it in a nutshell, these games are a bridge between generations and it makes it clear that there have to be more episodes on this topic. And if the word "switch" should make it to narrow for a next one, it can be for consoles in general, although I understood why you made the decision here, as on how you explained it.
I think the games that fit perfectly here are the Wonder Boy/Monster Boy games on Switch, All have physical copies (Monster Boy gets expensive 'cause Limited Run) but the digital versions often go on sale for less than 15 dollars and don't take that much space in GB.
A couple additional retro style games I’d recommend. Celeste is a pretty challenging 2D platformer (especially when you unlock the B-Side levels) the controls are simple with you mainly being able to Jump, Dash, and Climb, but it’s how all that is utilized is what makes it so much fun to play! It’s got a great story and a killer OST to boot. Second, is Omori. For those who enjoyed Earthbound or Undertale (or both) I think this game is something to look into. The battle system is similar to that of Earthbound but I’d say it’s a little easier, but still fun to go through, visuals are really nice, I especially love how the battle sprites are drawn, and the music is really good as well. but it’s the story is where this game truly shines! No spoilers from me but let’s just say, things get dark before they get better.
Darkness in a videogame..... Hold on let me finish this playthrough of metro on the Nintendo switch you know what's a bad Port you know it's a bad part when you can't you can't ** see the screen
I beat Okami for the 2nd time on the Xbox Series X HD remaster. Wonderful game, just goes on forever lol. First time I beat it was years ago on the PS3
Topic suggestion: *Is it possible to have a game collection that's too large?* The biggest problem I face is deciding which game to dedicate my time too. I literally have thousands of games, hundreds of which I consider actually worth playing. I favor games I genuinely enjoy playing over so-called popular titles.
Love Shredder’s revenge. Played this through a couple times with my 10 year old daughter. She often scolded me for using the taunt advantage, and not the other way around lol We both also love the River city girls games
12:33 i did, totally worth it i played some of it on my jailbroken ps2 way back in the day but because of the jailbroken nature of my console, i played just a little bit of hundreds of games the switch remaster is where i finally finished it
Mushihimesama (Bug Princess) is an excellent shmup. It's in my top 5 of STGa. Which does include another Cave shooter. The Switch does have a lot of really good shooters on it. So much so, I considered picking one up, as I hear that it often has better ports (and a few exclusives) than what can be found on Steam (which is what I play on other than mini consoles). I've been really impressed with M2, but there aren't many M2 developed games on Steam. Which I can believe. Many Steam shooters take a little work to get setup how I like. I don't know why, but many Steam shmups aren't fullscreen by default. My controller of preference is an 8-button Sega Genesis USB controller. And let me tell you, remapping buttons can be a lot of trial an error as I figure out how each game remaps and what they are calling the Genesis buttons. And that's for the ones that I don't need a MayFlash Magic dongle to trick the game to let me use my Genesis controller. Sometimes, even the MayFlash doesn't work.
That's the main thing I don't like about using different controllers with different systems. Remapping the buttons. That said, I've had my share of good luck with buttons ending up right where I want them by default.
Stealth Inc is a great game that has been left behind. I think this would make an amazing Switch port. Those that love Oddworld or Lost Vikings would love this puzzle platformer.
Something to keep in mind - Japanese Switch physical releases that have an English release on the eShop *usually* will play in English automatically (except Atlus games for some reason). The Cotton Saturn Tribute with two Cotton games and Guardian Force is worth getting, but also Akai Katana Shin, Castle Shikigami 2, Langrisser 1 + 2, Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony, and Star Renegades are all gonna tickle pink a retro enthusiast - honestly if you like retro, the switch is just where it's at
Great vid and an awesome list of games. Thanks for the heads up on Steel Assault, I missed that one, so I'll keep an eye out for it. Another vid in this series would definitely be appreciated. Oh yeah, I finished Okami HD if that counts, I put about 92-hours into it and enjoyed every single one.
my recs: cyber shadow, great ninja gaiden type game published by yacht club games, the guys who made shovel knight (but made by other people). fight'n rage, a great beat em up, albiet very hard because it brings in traditional fighting game mechanics much like streets of rage arcade paradise. a very minuscule business sim with collection of arcade game minigames with a story that’s more the main draw, that at one point kinda intrudes on the arcade stuff in the form of a boring ass factory job that goes on for a whole in-game week, but at least you can upgrade the business sim stuff out of the game with “daily” (in the game's time scale) missions. toxic crusaders. basically tmnt shredder's revenge with another cheesy 80’s action show about crime fighting mutants, except based on troma movies instead of a parody of frank miller's run on daredevil. super meat boy one of the first real indie successes, besides cave story. a tough as nails, but never unfair platformer that controls as smooth as butter. and play it on other consoles, too, they got stuff the switch version doesn’t have! cave story great metroidvania with a great story. haven’t replayed in a while, but it’s definitely held up, since “a while” meant “only 4 years ago”, and the game released in 2009.
Gotta get a switch oled if you play alot in handheld mode. I was a nay sayer for quite a while but finally bit the bullet while still being able to sell my old launch model for 200. Not bad! And it makes a huge difference, not to mention the larger internal storage helps tremendously
There's tons of side scrollers & beat em ups retro bases style on the switch. I'm glad that you mentioned how long these games were feeling too long. That's is why I think personally the retro games of yester year are that much better because of the short length of the games compared to now.
I personally found Shredder's Revenge to have stages of a perfect length. But I do agree that some games don't understand the point of levels/stages, and curating the experience for the intended audience.
I haven't finished Okami. I keep on picking it up and playing up to the first dungeon and stopping for some unknown reason. Then I come back and start the game over some years later and do the same thing. What's going on with my patience, why can't I ever finish that game!
Hi Retro Bird - I wanted to suggest a potential idea for a future video as it’s something I’ve struggled with for the last Year and a half …. “How many CRTs is enough? Or How many CRTs do you really need?” … basically what started as a hobby turned to sort of collecting CRTs to a bit of an unhealthy level. I currently have 9 but have gone through (picking up and reselling) at least 20 CRTs in the last year or so.
I checked both parts and I gotta say, great list, but you should really take a look at Blazing Chrome and Odallus: The Dark Call (both games were developed by Joy Masher which is a super small team that really understands retro games)
I finished Okami on Wii a long time ago. I enjoyed it but I also felt like it was so long. I don’t know why. I don’t think I’d ever play it again. I recommend playing it but I don’t recommend beating yourself up to finish it.
I've thought about it for a while & I'm pretty sure Capcom has been my overall favorite developer/publisher. That said I'm still waiting for get into SF6, too many other games I'm working on that have also been great (Diablo 4, Ff16 & Zelda).
There are countless modern games that probably appeal to retro gamers. If I had a game like Iconoclasts for the SNES it would have easily been my favorite game for the console. Owl Boy or Hyperlight Drifter should also appeal to fans of 16bit graphics. Aggelos, Carrion, Chroma Squad, Crosscode, Ion Fury, Haak, Inmost, Lacuna, Machinarium, Narita Boy, Prodeus, Undertale, Shantae games, Eastward, Bloodstained, Axiom Verge... all of those games could appeal to retro gamers for one reason or another and the list goes on and on. All of those amazing games exist on a cartridge for the Switch, which is why it has become my favorite console by far.
You can watch part 1 here: th-cam.com/video/TVqveTjUvoE/w-d-xo.html
Also, I forgot to mention that the accessory I'm using to play the Switch with a rotated screen is called the "Flip Grip".
@@RetroBirdGaming thank you! Was about to ask what that was. Great vid as always. PS, I never finished okami, but I have purchased it 3 times.

Astalon: Tears of the Earth, Alwa's Legacy, and Cathedral. Trust me.
@@thesultrystrangerdanger6824 You wanna run that reply by me again? Looks like you had a stroke there my guy
@@JustJacob01 I like I like the colorful talking doggy
@@thesultrystrangerdanger6824 Alright, to each their own.
I would also suggest the psikyo shooting library vol. 1 and 2 which I got for a good deal on both and they're full of retro shooter goodness
Another week with the Retro Bird thanks for all your work
Nintendo switch is quickly becoming one of the best consoles of all time, in my opinion!
Another great video. Good job Mr. Bird. Looking forward to trying some of these games.
Thanks for the recommendations! I am getting Mushihimesama!
Somebody else on here mentioned that the digital version is on sale until 7/7/23
That Okami joke hit home lol. I bought it originally on PS2, then HD on PS3 and finally Switch before i beat it 😅
It's a pretty long game, and one of those games everyone likes the idea of. So, it always ends up on people's backlogs.
Same. PS2, then I think Wii or Wii U (I don't remember), and now Switch. I don't think that I've ever gotten more than halfway through it.
I beat Okami for the 2nd time on the Xbox Series X HD remaster. Wonderful game, just goes on forever lol. First time I beat it was years ago on the PS3
You’re doing great. Love the content. Keep at it! 🫶🏻
That steel assault seemed interesting
Super Nintendo. Sega Genesis. When I dead broke, man, I couldn't picture this.
Great list! Please add Celeste in part 3!!
I enjoyed your video! Another fun retro title you may not have played is The Messenger.
I've played that game as well!
Topic suggestion: *Is it possible to have a game collection that's too large?* The biggest problem I face is deciding which game to dedicate my time too. I literally have thousands of games, hundreds of which I consider actually worth playing. I favor games I genuinely enjoy playing over so-called popular titles.
Some great choices here. Have you ever tried Arcade Paradise? A lot of great recreations of classic Arcade games on there
I've now finished okami! it was awesome!
For a retro game on the Switch, I'd also recommend Aggelos. Really fun 2D action platformer with great pixel art and decent challenge.
Love Shredder’s revenge. Played this through a couple times with my 10 year old daughter. She often scolded me for using the taunt advantage, and not the other way around lol
We both also love the River city girls games
12:33 i did, totally worth it
i played some of it on my jailbroken ps2 way back in the day but because of the jailbroken nature of my console, i played just a little bit of hundreds of games
the switch remaster is where i finally finished it
You're so fun to watch, love your personality
Glad to hear it! Thanks :)
The Cotton Saturn Tribute with two Cotton games and Guardian Force is worth getting, but also Akai Katana Shin, Castle Shikigami 2, Langrisser 1 + 2, Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony, and Star Renegades are all gonna tickle pink a retro enthusiast - honestly if you like retro, the switch is just where it's at
Not so fast, warning on the saturn cotton collection it has lag issues they did patch it but it may put sone people off.
@@brendanroberts1310 I'll take some lag over how much the Saturn cotton games are
@@ChampionOfSkyrim good point.
Been playing Hollow Knight on my PS4. Great game, but you are right - tough!
Love your video! These were some pretty solid choices. I absolutely adore Hollow Knight. I can't say that about Okami though... And I did finish it.
Shovel knight is an obvious one but it’s great
my recs:
cyber shadow, great ninja gaiden type game published by yacht club games, the guys who made shovel knight (but made by other people).
fight'n rage, a great beat em up, albiet very hard because it brings in traditional fighting game mechanics much like streets of rage
arcade paradise. a very minuscule business sim with collection of arcade game minigames with a story that’s more the main draw, that at one point kinda intrudes on the arcade stuff in the form of a boring ass factory job that goes on for a whole in-game week, but at least you can upgrade the business sim stuff out of the game with “daily” (in the game's time scale) missions.
toxic crusaders. basically tmnt shredder's revenge with another cheesy 80’s action show about crime fighting mutants, except based on troma movies instead of a parody of frank miller's run on daredevil.
super meat boy
one of the first real indie successes, besides cave story. a tough as nails, but never unfair platformer that controls as smooth as butter. and play it on other consoles, too, they got stuff the switch version doesn’t have!
cave story
great metroidvania with a great story. haven’t replayed in a while, but it’s definitely held up, since “a while” meant “only 4 years ago”, and the game released in 2009.
What cacpom arcade stick are you using? Looks good!
Man you are hilarious!! Hollow Knight reminds me of the original Metroid in gameplay it’s one of my favorite games
I finished Okami earlier this year! It took me 3 years to finish........ Fun game though.
I like shredders revenge but it’s not all that fun to play alone. Felt like I was rushing to get each level over with .
Hollow knight is amazing! I can’t wait for Hollow knight silksong
Never realized the GBA graphics look that way for that reason. Cool.
Yeah, I find it interesting too.
Great video as part I, waiting for part 3 now lol. Thanks
I finished Okami on Wii a long time ago. I enjoyed it but I also felt like it was so long. I don’t know why. I don’t think I’d ever play it again. I recommend playing it but I don’t recommend beating yourself up to finish it.
That grip to hold the Switch vertical using OEM joycons is great. Does anyone know what brand it is or maybe post a link?
Sorry, I put it in a pinned comment but meant to mention it in the video too. It's called a Flip Grip.
I've thought about it for a while & I'm pretty sure Capcom has been my overall favorite developer/publisher. That said I'm still waiting for get into SF6, too many other games I'm working on that have also been great (Diablo 4, Ff16 & Zelda).
Hi dude. Thanks for the vid! Silly, entertaining, and informative!
