- George C. Scott visits with Johnny on November 3rd, 1987, to promote his sitcom, "Mr. President". It's interesting to point out, so many years later, that "Mr. President" was made by Carson's production company for the brand new Fox network, and Carson himself suggested Scott for the role, having been in awe of the actor his whole life.
Funnily enough, they barely breathe a word about the sitcom during the twelve-minute interview. Instead, we're dazzled by the wonderful Scott reciting a few lines from the character Thomas Mendip, of Christopher Fry's play "The Lady's not for Burning" (1949). Pure gold.
Special thanx to California Solo - / @californiasolo1688
That voice man, that style!
George C. Scott, the greatest actor of all time. He didn't get by on being a pretty-boy, he just had pure raw talent. His role as General Patton, incredible. All of his roles, he stole the show. One role I wish George C. Scott had been able to take on: Hannibal Lector.
💯 I wish He could’ve took that role. I really believe he would’ve been amazing.!! 💯
He probably would have been great in it but I just can’t imagine anybody but Hopkins.
RIP George C. Scott (October 18, 1927 - September 22, 1999), aged 71
You will always be remembered as a legend.
My God that speech from the play was amazing!
Finally someone mentioned the lines from "The lady is not for burning"! 😂 It's fantastic!
I too loved George C Scott. One of the best actors ever! His portrayal of the general in Dr. Strangelove can never be repeated. It was a phenomenal performance. He is great in Patton and also made a great Scrooge in the 1984 version of A Christmas Carol. RIP
"I, uh, hate to judge before all the facts are in, it's beginning to look like, uh, General Ripper exceeded his authority."
I have to say, as a British person myself, George C Scott did a very decent English accent for his role as Scrooge in the 1984 A Christmas Carol. His tone, his diction, were all very good, especially compared to other Americans who attempted English accents, e.g. Kesley Grammer in the 2004 version of A Christmas Carol.
He was the best Ebenezer Scrooge
He voiced the Evil Poacher Perceval C Mcleach from the Rescuers Down Under.
@@johnking5174 Hmmm....most people over the years have pointed out that Scott didn't use an English accent in that film.
This is ACTING on a whole other level. Mesmerizing! Thank you for posting - I watch this clip every so often in awe of his acting. God bless George C. Scott and his memory!.
Scott played Sherlock Holmes along with Joanne Woodward in “They Might Be Giants.” Brilliant, underrated treasure. And the best Scrooge ever.
I Just watched it last night...I LOVE IT!!!He was sooo f...... cute with joanne...great movie!!🙋🏻♀️
Rescuers Down Under introduced me to Mr Scott.
Same here!
Same For Me Since He Voiced One of My Disney Villains Hahahahaha!
Same to me also.
Stephen Luke Awesome His Voice Has McLeach Was Spine Chilling!
Seriously I'm here to match a face with a name. I'm 37
The best Ebenezer Scrooge I've ever seen.
Absolutely AGREE! No one better has played Scrooge in the history of film. Period!
@@timothylikes782 I liked Bill Murray in Scrooged
I'm torn between him and Alastair Sim.
I think this is actually the first time I've seen an interview with Scott. I'm so used to his intense performances on film that it's quite a change to see him so relaxed and casual and even joking around.
Very down-to-earth man. He is missed.
Scott was such a magnificent talent. The speech from 'The Lady's Not For Burning' shows how he can mesmerize an audience in only a couple of seconds. God doesn't make actors like him anymore.
Brilliant man. Such a powerful force in acting and truly an artist at his craft.
Anatomy of a Murder, The Hustler, The Hospital, Petulia, The Changeling, Dr Strangelove. The Bible. Patton; he was brilliant in all. A powerhouse of an actor!
Magnificent actor! Never saw him put a foot wrong.
George C Scott, he will always be Patton to me, always. I was so mesmerized by his portrayal of General Patton that I could not separate him from the role even now. I loved him in Jane Eyre and though this was a decent adaptation, it should have been a three part series. So much was left out which left out his fine acting. Susannah York's skilled acting was wonderful.
He's great in The Changeling and Exorcist 3, too. Legendary actor. ❤
The Changeling is a great film! I'm glad you mentioned that movie because it just doesn't get enough credit. 👍
He was extraordinary in Patton (1970)
That. Was. AMAZING
Kubrick mentioned George C Scott as one of the best actors he’s ever worked with
I remember one of Scott's last interviews: "Stanley was a genius, but he was as crazy as a shithouse mouse." 😄
George C Scott was a amazing actor. All the amazing movies and TV shows he did. He really was one of the greats of our generation… I loved all of his movies, but my favorite was A Christmas Carol.. 💯 🎄 🎅
George C Scott Was a Great Actor Big Time and His Voice Role of McLeach in The Rescuers Down Under Made Me Become a Fan of His Since He Voiced One of My Disney Villains!
The C. In George C. Scott really makes him distinguished
In my opinion for what it's worth after Spencer Tracy this guy must come a great second greatest actor. I loved him in The Changeling and all my kids enjoyed this film. ❤️
To see an actor come out and act with the caliber in George C.Scott is a gift to the world. Truly an amazing talent.
He’s great, such a gentleman, fantastic actor
Brilliant actor in the changeling 1980 film👍
One of the most underrated actors of all time. He has a gravity about him in scenes that steals the limelight from other actors he shares scenes with!!
A time when you could smoke indoors without any repercussion
Except the lung cancer. That's kind of a bummer of a repercussion.
First thing I saw him in was Patton and then over time in other things such as They Might Be Giants and Christmas Carol. *This* was a proper actor. *This* was a great man.
GREAT SCOTT! I didn't have to pay for that performance!
Tremendous actor!
My favorite actor. The Hospital is one of my favorite movies. He was a great Edward Rochester. In everything- a great mix of anger, genius, manhood (in crisis), and somewhere...joy.
We have no one of that caliber today. A bygone era. So dignified ! You see the heehaws and forced drama of today's actors ..pathetic.
HOT DAMN, 🔥that was AMAZING!!!
Great, great comments.
Never seen this interview before. Two of my fav guys, totally juiced.
George C Scott totally unfamiliar until Patton.
Holy shit, possibly my fav film. Scott didn't play Patton , he was Patton. Brilliant film.
Kubrick's flick Strangelove what a monster film, Scott's character out of the box. So not typical George C Scott.
Day of the dolphins, and so many others. Absolutely actor of the century, love this talent.
Forever Percival C Mcleach 🙌🙌👌👌RIP George C Scott
He was one of the few actors who could go big and still be believable. Walked away with any movie or show.
Don't forget "the New Centurions" , a great movie and acting by Mr. Scott
No comments? Well, ok, maybe I'm the first? This was really fun to watch. I love George C. Scott. I wish they would have mentioned Patton. Also, Mr. Scott was in a brilliant version of Beauty and the Beast with his wife. It's on You Tube and everyone should check it out. Thanks.
We don’t have real men on talk shows anymore. George C Scott comes on the show and smokes a cigarette while being interviewed. The world used to be cooler.
Compare this Piers Morgan's rude interviews
Yes, it is! We have lost so many great actress/actresses over the last couple of decades.. speaking as an adult that was born in the mid 80s it is heartbreaking. The 90s was one of the greatest decade. But we’ve lost so many great actors and actresses.. it really is heartbreaking. I wish I could go back to being a kid in the early 90s again… 💯 ❤❤
A brand that had only 2 living smokers left at the time, no less! 😂
What does smoking have to do with being a real man? Dying from lung cancer, it makes you a man!!! Like...huh?
George C. Scott was such a brilliant actor!
George is one of my favourite actors ❤
This was great, thank you.
OMG that little monologue he does here puts most actors today to shame!! Riveting !!
Know him best in “Man getting hit by football”
G.o.a.t.🍻
Real men of Hollywood.
Johnny could bring out the gods.
Yes he did !
In "Hardcore" George said he didn't care who was on Johnny Carson. He just wanted to find his daughter. Ironic.
"Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops!
Uh, depending on the breaks."
Damn
Love GCS
They don’t make them like that anymore!
He was also the best Mussolini
The cigarettes were "Kents."
The only actor to top Brando
Johnny's company did indeed produce "Mr. President" and when Johnny decided to pull the plug on the show early into its second season (it was consistently at the bottom of the ratings), Scott was irate and the two of them never spoke to each other again.
Really? I could've sworn Scott didn't give a shit about the show. And a scene from an earlier interview wit Scott made it to the montage presented in Johnny's last show.
@@bernardoschmidt Scott hated the show but he was very upset that Johnny pulled the plug on it without warning since the show had just undergone a retooling in its short second season (where they'd brought in Madeline Kahn). I read an article at the time that he was furious demanding to speak to Carson personally about it. I'll allow for the possibility that maybe they smoothed things later, but he never appeared on Johnny's show again after this. I don't think Johnny needed to get his clearance to just use his image in a montage on the last show.
@@epaddon I suppose it's all true. I mentioned the scene in the last show because Johnny left important guests out of it, like Jerry Lewis, Charlie Callas, former associate Dick Cavett and people with whom I guess he didn't get along anymore as he used to.
What really baffles me, concerning the series, is that it's nowhere to be found. It was never released either on video or DVD. From what I've seen it was not really good, but would be fun to watch it today.
@@bernardoschmidt I remember it. It was one of the first sitcoms FOX debuted along with Married With Children etc. and basically was the most "traditional" of all their original programs. It was consistently at the bottom of the ratings and when it was renewed for the Fall they made changes. The actress who played Scott's wife (Carlin Glynn) was out and they developed the premise that his wife had left him and her sister (Madeline Kahn) who had always been in love with him would take over the First Lady social duties. Didn't improve things (I think it switched from being a filmed sitcom to a videotaped one that second season). In terms of comparing Scott with the other names you mentioned (Callas), those were cases where the falling out was more Johnny mad at them, but I think in this case it was more that of Scott being mad at Johnny and not wanting to talk to him again, and Johnny feeling bad about that.

5:12 I play a street bum, also type casting
I thought he was so handsome/sexy.
I can't look at him amd not see General Patton
I wonder what brand his cigarette was? 🤣
Probably Pall Mall or Lucky Strikes, those were HUGE brands way back then during those guy's youth.
@@thomaslowe4774 Could've also been Kool.
Kents
Brilliant actor with a grit. None like him today. Just light weight and much overrated and overpaid Clooney, Cruise, and Pitt; clowns like D Johnson, Chan, Reynolds, Sandler, and Wahlberg.
The Rock is a joke fake wrestling makes me really laugh. Clooney is a real clown Tom Cruise is okay I really like Jerry Maguire. Brad Pitt a big joke. George C Scott was epic
anybody know what brand he smoked
I think they were Lucky Strikes, Chesterfields or Camels. No filter. He mentioned it in his Playboy magazine interview but I can't remember which of these it was. I am leaning towards Lucky Strikes.
Kents
@@terryblevins8117 how do u know
Three minutes in. Scott hardly said a word. Carson talks too much.
Love Carson dearly, but it's true. He admired Scott so much he felt nervous around him and wouldn't stop babbling.
"
Ham Actor "stems from the old days when the poorer actors used greasepaints based on pork fat , ergo : Ham Actor = Poor actor ....
