George C. Scott: Patton, Drinking, telling the Academy Awards to lose his number!

- George talks about finding sobriety, telling the Academy to lose his number, playing Clarence Darrow and valuing his privacy
He was an American stage and film actor, director, and producer. He was best known for his stage work, as well as his portrayal of General George S. Patton in the film Patton, as General Buck Turgidson in Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, and as Ebenezer Scrooge in Clive Donner's 1984 film A Christmas Carol.
He was the first actor to refuse the Academy Award for Best Actor (for Patton in 1970), having warned the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences months in advance that he would do so on philosophical grounds if he won. Scott believed that every dramatic performance was unique and could not be compared to others.
He died in 1999 at age 71. His grave is unmarked. - บันเทิง

I would like to sincerely thank you for your comments. Of my over 20,000 interviews, George ranks in the top 10. I also wonder what happened to television. Today, it seems that interviews are more contentious than informative. I keep looking through the weeds trying to find a true journalist. I want to apologize for the awful sweater. George C. Scott said the Oscars are a big meat parade and didn’t want any part of them. I agree with his statement.
A lot of people at the Oscars couldn't stand him. He'd had confrontations with many. Not necessarily because they were shits but because he was. He saw the worst in almost everyone and beat up women to within an inch of their lives. As fine an actor as there may have been, he was also a violent, drunken, misanthropic bore.

Whatever you may think of the Oscars, and whatever may be objectively true about the Oscars, my postulate is that Scott didn't want anything to do with them because they didn't want anything to do with him.

The rawness of his voice and temperament of character was always captivating. His Ebenezer portrayal is so fantastic in a Christmas Carol I've watched it every year on Christmas eve for the last 20 years.

@@thewkovacs316 My guess is that George was fed up with Kubrick's constant demand for retakes, only for him to use the "rehearsal takes", even though he still would ask him to do it all over again, without being over the top. What I'm still wondering about, is that Kubrick managed to assure him that the cameras were off, yet somehow, he seemed to be completely oblivious to the VERY loud motors of the 35mm cameras that Kubrick was using at the time...
He was a complex man. I admired his work enormously. His personal life was a bit tumultuous. Married several times, alcohol problems. He once said that one of the reasons he acted was to escape the real world, that he was truly free and happy only when he was acting. I’m not sure there has ever been a greater one-man tour de force than “Patton.”

An actor without equal...versatile and always superb. Anatomy of a Murder, The Hustler, They Might Be Giants, The Hospital and of course Patton to mention a few.
Patton was one of my favorite movies and Georg C Scott did a superb magnificent job playing General George Patton.
He also gave a brilliant performance in the Hustler.

I followed George C. Scott over the years, and I would consider myself to be a fan. I never read or heard that he has any problem with his buttocks. He may have had other health issues on account of his drinking and smoking over the years, but to my knowledge the buttocks was never a problem for him.

And George C. Scott--what a treasure! He's most assuredly one of my all-time favorite actors. I've read he could be a terribly moody person, particularly during interviews, but you asked all the right questions with just the perfect tone, which no doubt allowed him to be as open in any interview I've ever seen of him.
Again, *this* is how sublime journalistic professionalism looks and sounds. It's meant to inform and enlighten, and this interview does just that.
Scott is old school....growing up at a time when acting was considered a lowly profession....thus a great talent that feels somewhat ashamed of that whole Hollywood scene. His Patton is one of the best performances of all time.
There are no actors like George anymore.
There wasn't any like him back in his day either, great actors are unique in what ever era they come from.

One of my all-time best actor/entertainer: The Flim-Flam Man, Islands in the Stream, The Changeling, The Day of the Dolphin, Patton, and Rage. Plus he was a Conservative. He worked hard for everything he got. One Hell of an actor!!
He was on Hollywood shit list then and he would be today because he was a real man. And he mentioned Richard Burton. Your best actors were staged trained. They learn the craft an art of acting. Set for a long time haven't gone to Carnegie Mellon University is a child for acting, but there's a very big difference between a celebrity and an actor. He simply took gifts he had and expounded on them. Another actor I like who was from Rags to Riches was born outside of my hometown of Pittsburgh and that's Charles Bronson.
He was really a very good guy and an outstanding actor. He portrayed General Patton perfectly.
I'm convinced he was born for that role. _Patton_ remains on the top of my list of all-time favorite movies, among those that were character exposés, and squarely because of GCS and his incredible performance. He was a complex man but in many ways he reminds me of me -- especially the "half-assed conservative" line. Like me I'm sure he was "half-assed" because to be "full-assed" you have to give up any semblance of thoughtfulness or modesty, and especially anonymity. Would drive a man to drink, and he did. He's probably turning in his grave as we speak.

Someone might look back at it now from the perspective of the films put out over perhaps the last couple of decades and consider it "quaint;" but for its time it wasn't, and the memory of WWII was still fresh in the minds of lots of movie-goers in 1970.
Patton was portrayed as some sort of modern-day "warrior poet" in the movie, which was far from the truth. He wasn't nearly as risk-averse or as manly as the mythical figure in the film. Also, the ridiculous enemy casualty figures ascribed to the 3rd army toward the end of the film made zero sense.@@briane173

It is arguably the greatest performance by one man, as far as simply towering over an entire movie, that we've ever seen. The movie was very, very, very good. George C. Scott was otherworldly.

Jamie van Brewen ...not an accurate statement per Patton’s grandson. In a tv interview about 15 years ago, Robert H. Patton said that his father cried when the family first saw the movie and he saw Scott’s portrayal of his own father (Gen. Patton) on screen. His father felt that it was so accurate and captured him realistically. As Robert related the story, he was a boy when the movie came out, and he noticed his dad crying during the movie. Little Robert asked his father “what’s wrong, Dad?” His father replied that the movie depiction was so accurate and realistic that it seems like he’s looking at his own dad. Pretty powerful statement by Gen. Patton’s son on Scott’s portrayal of his father.
Only thing they got wrong was in real life Patton slapped 2 soldiers not just 1 like in the movie. Patton could not stand a coward.
None of us have seen Patton's personality on display. No way of concluding that he did a good job portraying him.
George C. Scott seems very much like Patton. Hard, no nonsense type of guy. Something we sorely need today.
I wish there were more great interviews with George like this. I miss him terribly. He showed so much vulnerability in acting and this interview. I just watched Islands in the Stream again. Very moving film.

I didn't know of Eileen Prose, she is so warm and engaging and an excellent interviewer, really informed and what a wonderful flow to the conversation. Bravo Eileen. George came across so relaxed and oozing charm with a lovely glint in the eye.

Yes, FFM was a great movie. It's hard to ignore the parallel's between Scott's FFM and today's politicians, with people actually believing the crap these morons spew. When I call this or that politician a "flim flam man," today's kids look at me quizzically wondering what the heck I'm talking about.

If any of you have never watched “A Christmas Carol”, and movie filmed in 1984 with George Scott playing the part of Ebenezer Scrooge... you have really missed out! I think it is his greatest performance! It’s been a tradition in my family to watch it the day before Christmas. Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!

He played Scrooge with an understated menace.Alastair Sim's take made him seem snobbist and just a miser. Scott made him seem like a man who enjoyed being cold-hearted and mean spirited because of his own internal wounds. The turn around at the end when he visits his nephew really shows his duality as an actor.
One of the best american actors of all time. Also a very difficult man with temper issues. The interviewer did a terrific job.
Wonderful interview. George C. Scott was one of my favorites. We just watched A Christmas Carol last night. Whenever I see Patton on TV, I seriously cannot change the channel. And Dr. Strangelove with his portrayal of Buck Turgisson was awesome. You did a great job. He was so real, and you are a respectful interviewer. One can tell he was at ease, relaxed and comfortable talking to you.

My favorite actor ever, specially on Patton.
We will never see actors of his quality, honesty and intelligence again, I don't know how much of what we saw was him acting and age does change you , but I got the impression he was a very nice guy. When you see the tight arse and full of themselves actors now with no concept or acceptance of what the audience wants the interviewer to ask (ie prima donnas) you can see why films are so bad now.
"The Exorcist 3" was an acting clinic. Tragically overlooked film.

I loved this movie so much I bought the book. The movie was faithful to the book also. I really enjoyed immersing myself totally into the experience of its creators. I hope someday it shows up on streaming and BlueRay. There is a poor copy of it on TH-cam, still worth the experience though.
Another movie along the same line is "Mister Moses-1965" staring Robert Mitchum. Mitchum plays a con man set in Africa selling a magic elixir in the countryside. Also like Flim Flam Man and Mister Moses, many movies never made it to VHS let alone DVD. I got a copy in 1977 that was recorded off a late night TV movie that was pretty grainy. TH-cam has a copy and I highly recommend you give it a view, you won't be disappointed.
So many actors did movies that aren't recognized as their "greatest" work, which is somewhat understandable (based on budgets and promotions). However, some of their work may not be politically correct by today's standards, which is sad for film history.

Dear “journalists” of today, getting a good and honest interview is so much more valued than trying to play “gotcha journalism” and tricking the subject into saying something that you can take out of context that will cause some possible controversy.
I miss those days.
I'm sure Ms. Prose had a lot of George C. Scott in her. The ambush journalists, the ones who are obnoxious in order to get the attention of the industry they're in, are doing it for their own aggrandizement at the expense of the people they're interviewing. It's quite plain to me that Ms. Prose wasn't in that job to prop up her own image; she was interested in the people she interviewed and as a result, put them at ease enough to get honest and thoughtful answers from them.
Oh I'm such a fan of George C. Scott.
I don't remember this woman interviewer. But, son, she did such a good job. We need more like her today.

I HONESTLY think that's one of the very best interviews G. C. S. has ever given!! He's usually been so closed mouth and un-cooperative, but not this one - he clearly enjoyed talking to the interviewer!
What a spot on interview, casual but so knowledgeable. I just watched a documentary on Ava Gardner and all I was sad to hear of how she faired in their relationship. I’m assuming some but maybe not all of that was a direct relation to the alcoholism of both powerhouse people. Subbed and glad to do so.
I’ve always liked his movies. Definitely one of the best. But I respect him more as a human being. Very direct and to the point, but soft spoken. Humble. As it should be. 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽

George C. Scott was one of the most amazing Actor who ever lived.....whatching on Crystmas's Carol ( he deserved an Oscar for this Play) and Charles Dickens Masterpiece Oliver Twist make you became an Actor yourself

No, he’d be considered conservative today. He wasn’t a PC guy, which is something many liberals like to uphold or present themselves as.
He was the most sought-after personality in the world for a time. He had a real talent for driving the people closest to him away. He died alone in his sleep of heart failure. He was found three days afterward by the cleaning lady.
@Andrew Heller I almost agree. When Scott and she were filming John Huston's The Bible (In The Beginning) Gardner wired a lady friend that she was still crazy about Scott and elated that she'd got him to start drinking once more. That last bit made him easier to manipulate into a relationship, thought Ava. Gardner was a wild thing--probably too big a personality even for the movies. She lived on a grand scale an gave off a brilliant light before it was all over..
When I met Scott (circa 1979) I found him an unassuming, kind, even shy, person. He was sensitive and generous to real (non-theatrical) people and very polite to ladies --even ex-wives. I wish we had more time with him.
