George C. Scott was never full of it. Most actors get up there and say, "There is no such thing as Best Actor, we're all Best Actors," yeah, easy for you to say up on the podium with an Oscar in your hand. Scott genuinely disapproved of the competition and therefore didn't turn up. A man of his word.

George C. Scott was the first actor ever to refuse an Academy Award (1970, for Patton). He was followed by Marlon Brando, who also turned down the award for The Godfather The reason he claimed for missing the ceremony where he won the Oscar was that he was busy watching a hockey game. Although he refused the Oscar he won for Patton, he accepted the Emmy he won for his performance in The Price", saying that he felt that the Emmy Awards were a more honest appreciation of an actor's work.

If anyone wants to see the absolute fullness of G.C.S.’s talents, I HIGHLY recommend his role as the iconic Ebenezer Scrooge in his 1984 version of “A Christmas Carol”!
It is THE most authentic version and his performance makes every other one look like a cheap parody.
This should be shown on TV EVERY Christmas, right along side of “It’s a Wonderful Life”!

I have NO doubt that if Charles Dickens himself watched EVERY movie version of his story, he would,(after freaking out over the technology of it all) see Scott’s performance and exclaim - “That’s HIM! That’s my Ebenezer Scrooge, come to life!”

George C. Scott has great acting in Patton. George C. Scott refused to accept the nomination and the award, because he did not feel himself to be in any competition with other actors. Frank McCarthy, the film's producer, accepted the award on Scott's behalf at the ceremony, but returned it to the Academy the next day in keeping with Scott's wishes.

Ronaldo Sosa True, but consider how many people (especially actors) didn’t even show up for the ceremony in that decade. For instance, De Niro was nominated 3 times in the 70s, winning of course in ‘74. He didn’t show up for a ceremony until ‘81.

He didn't simply "not go". He refused the nomination in the first place because he totally objected to the notion that actors and movie makers should be judged against each other based on merit. That's why the film director who accepted the award made a point of saying how it truly reflected well on the Academy to still select him as Best Actor despite him refusing the nomination in the first place.

Scott was also a fine comedic actor. One need look no further than "Dr. Strangelove, or..." to see the proof. He parodied Curtis LeMay with comedic brilliance. That scene where he tripped, barrel rolled, then sprang up and stayed in character was fantastic. Most other actors would have laughed, and the scene would have hit the blooper reel, or the cutting room floor. Scott "roll with it," so to speak, and went on acting. He was great in "The Hustler" as well. There isn't an actor living now with the stage presence and gravitas to play Patton in the same way.

No, it would not have been amazing if General Bradley had gone up to receive the award, because he would have been disrespecting George C Scott. Give that GCS declined the nomination outright, the only appropriate person to go up and accept the award WAS the film producer (or director), on behalf of the film. And it's why the producer simply said that it reflected well on the Academy to have given it to GCS - because it truly Was awarded on merit, not Hollywood politics. Anyone else accepting that award would have been disrespecting Scott's stance. Period.

GCS made it very clear that if he won, he would not accept the Academy Award, and I believe he saidthat'fore even being nominated. That means that the Academy nominated and voted for him soley on the merits of his performance. The voting/nominating processed is so politicized now that there's no way someone like that would get a nod even if he'd given the best acting performance ever.

True. He had his body language down and his frankness down to a T though. That part of the portrayal was absolutely perfect. Patton didn't screw around. He said what he meant and if he gave an order, you followed it.

Right on. Boris Karloff also used to avoid the ceremony as often as he could. The last year of his life, he went on the outs with Dame Edith Evans, who supported the Academy. Karloff not only disliked the pretense of the oscars, he saw them as a tool the studios used to shut down actors who were interested in the Screen Actors Guild. People say it was all a lot of talk. But when Karloff received the grammy for his voiceover on the Grinch, he took no interest in the award, and in fact, gave it to his agent to use as a doorstop in his office.

At the time this movie was released (that late August) I along with several other guys saw it at the Belle Meade Theater in Nashville, tn. on a Sunday afternoon. We had with us a man who was to be on our list of speakers the next day. After the movie we were all talking about it. This fellow was standing off to the side somewhat not taking part in our conversation. Finally one of us ask "reckon how close to the real thing this was". After some back and forth the quiet man said "it was damn close". Of course, politely he was ask how do you know? He said when Patton was leaving his staff from Italy, shaking hand down the line? I was the next to last man in the line. This guy had been a consultant for the movie. The next day during and after his presentation, listening to it and look more closely at him, you could believe he was there as he stood in a military fashion, talked in a very military fashion and had his hair cut in a very close military flattop!!

What a tough performance from a man whos juat the opposite of the cgaracter he played PATTON. Jeorge C Scott is recognised for that role what a legendry actor. George C Scott Deserved the OSCAR for Patton. Jeorge S Patton was the most aggressive controversial but brilliant heroic Generals during WWII.

A man like George C. Scott marches through this earth, once every four hundred years. Admirably certain in his judgements, unforgiving, never budging . He stuck to his guns and showed that the whole Hollywood community comprise a bunch of hypocritical screw-ups . Scott never suffered fools gladly and I applaud his stance .
His performance was riveting. The other choices for the role pale by comparison: Robert Mitchum? Lee Marvin? Rod Steiger? John
Wayne?.Kirk Douglas? All these actors pale in comparison albeit talented in their own right .
No. No And he steers the role effortlessly .
      A most magnificent role.

I was just a kid who loved 'Patton' and couldn't possibly understand
the statement he was making by avoiding the ceremony. You were
the best, George, but I wish you'd accepted that Oscar yourself.

After Mr. Mc Carthy spoke and accepted the award, the camera panned down into the audience. That balding man clapping was the real General Omar Bradley. 'Brad' once appeared on a Dean Martin Celebrity Roast and died, I think, in the late 70's. I am sure he is in Heaven with General George Patton. God has reserved a special place in Paradise where all of America's great generals reside. They all live on the same block together, along with Washington & Grant. I also believe that Monty stops by every day for a spot of tea, and they all sit around and talk about old times. Patton warned us about the Russians, but we wouldn't listen. By the way, Andrew Jackson "Old Hickory," the Hero of New Orleans, lives on that block too!

Yes, and The Academy seems to do that often. They don't give the award for the performace that earned it, they instead give it as more of a lifetime achievement award and a mea culpa for not having given it to the actor earlier. But I still think that George C. Scott deserved this award. It was the most powerful and commanding performance that year.
