Your comment about Stanley Tucci made me so happy because he's such a great guy. If you watch his Italy special in the last episode he discusses the refugee crisis and it breaks your heart but made me respect him like crazy.
LOVING your channel, the Pride video completely sucked me in! Got a few recommendations -- for tv, would love to hear your thoughts on Young Royals (swedish, 6 part series on Netflix, really good chemistry between the leads) and Skam season 3 (each season follows a different main character, and this one deals really well with coming out and mental health), and for films, Handsome Devil (2016) and Maurice (1987).
To answer to your intro, while iconic gay movies of the early 2000s have tons of sassy/mean feminine characters and gay best friends, the queer vibes in TDWP actually stem from Miranda and Andrea's very relationship. The looks Miranda gives her, the search for her approval, and their general chemistry while Andrea kills herself to seduce Miranda is an experience almost any lesbian can relate to. Miranda (the older woman) is also introducing a new world which is morally dubious to a sweet innocent girl, which is a common theme in lesbian literature and genre. The "strong friendship", "you're the only one who sees the real me", "we're both so alike", "I only actually care about you", etc. I mean Nate himself said "you're in a relationship with the person on the phone" which is what we all thought. Andrea coming to Miranda's defense is also telling. It's not a job anymore, it's a infatuation for her boss (if not affection, admiration). The ending seeing Miranda smile is essentially a love declaration. While the classic characters associated with gay culture are toned down in this movie (I would argue they avoided making them clichés, which is a good thing imo) the main relationship is portrayed like a courtship that only Andrea can win. Most romcoms are following this very structure aka finding the "perfect match". In my mind there is no doubt that those two characters are lesbians and love each other.
Do "Mean Girls" next! That is such an iconic gay movie without being overtly about the gayz, just like "The Devil Wears Prada." Damn, is it memorable! :D These two movies were part of a crop of films that came out in the mid-2000s that had great gay sensibilities, but were not solely about the gayz. I think they're great because these films infiltrated mainstream audiences and introduced so many straight people to the fabulousness of camp and gayness, but subtly and without fanfare.
i highly recommend you to watch Heartstopper !! it's a series that was just released on Netflix, it's an adaptation of a series of book written by Alice Oseman, and it is just AWESOME !! it's about a couple of teenagers and the representation is great
Each day... everyday I have been coming to your channel,. explicitly to see if you posted or not.... One day just one day I didn't come... And there... You posted that very day...!!! I guess now that's what happens now.. whatever guys... It's awesome to have you guys back... Plus... Your last community post... Please see the comment section of that... There's one comment only and that's mine... I have a huge huge request for you guys to please discuss Maurice, I am literally dieing to listen from you guys about that very much underrated masterpiece. And please don't go away for this long again... I really missed you guys...
As an American, I’d never seen the “if my grandmother had wheels” clip before this and I’d like to thank you very much for bringing it into my life 👵 🚲 🍝 🤣
This video was recommended to me and I’m so glad it was! I’m always looking for other queer reactors to follow and support. Looking forward to the next video!
@@scottsaunders5087 I used to laugh at that scene thinking it was too exaggerated. Now that I know how to sew and I make money designing clothes, I sometimes catch myself being angry because a store doesn't have the right kind of zippers I need or the right tone of red for a sewing thread or something like that haha
I love this movie 😍 It's different from the book, but it's even more interesting and the acting is amazing! I wonder if there will be more reactions to films in the future? In particular, I really want to know your opinion about the film "Victor/Victoria" (1982). Actually I'm a new subscriber because of Young Royals 💜 and everything is interesting to me, because your reaction is so wonderful, interesting and positive! Thank you ☺️
I don't know if it's the lack of sleep but... It's a film about not fitting in to the world that you find yourself in, rejecting it because 'that's not me' but ultimately embracing your part in it and growing into a stronger, better person from it. Such as one might find themselves in our community and be 'I'm here but that's not me' because what they see isn't how they see themselves and they don't have an appreciation of what it means and the complexities of the queer community but once they find where they fit and embrace themselves and the community that they grow into a stronger, better version of themselves. All I know for sure is that Alex is looking hot, Josh is looking cute and I'm looking forward to the next instalment of A Story Worth Telling. Also I'd like to try the thing that you guys did at the end at work but I don't think they'd have the same appreciation of it.
It's so true! I've worked in the fashion industry for years and my closet is full of things that I either got for free or paid next to nothing for at a company sample sale. And when you work on the wholesale production side of the industry, you never want to pay retail for ANYTHING because you know how little it costs to make... insane markups! Plus I went to high school and college for fashion in NYC and at least a third of the student population was queer young men!
Somehow I stumbled over a crazy amount of lesbian fanfiction about this movie... they're even publishing it now. I never really got that from the movie at all.
I know it's been a minute but if you are looking for iconic queer films to analyze or react to, I recommend The Birdcage with Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. I've seen a few other reaction vids to it and I'm delighted to find just how much the premise of the plot rankles modern sensibilities, because it means that we've come so far. And yet, you couldn't get the comedic genius of the film without the premise, so it's a bit sad to find reactors getting their backs up prematurely before they realize that the campy-cringey stuff is intentional. Another even older queer movie from the indie circuit is The Opposite of Sex, starring Christina Ricci and featuring Lisa Kudrow, Johnny Galecki pre-Big Bang Theory, and one of the - period - best - period - gay generational "burn" monologues EVAH. (Allegedly I may have drunkenly delivered this monologue when ageism reared its ugly head in a local gay bar in Upstate New York back in the 00's. You'll know you get there when the gay lead male says to Johnny Galecki, "Listen to me you little grunge f****t..." and then hitch your tits and prepare for the burn. Sadly it was never a mainstream film so unless there's a drag queen nearby to educate the onlookers to the source of the burn it tends to get misinterpreted. Ahem. Moooooving on. But delightful 90's camp, bittersweet comedy with a poignant ending that redeems some of the slower pacing from the 'older' films.) And OF COURSE you should drag Torch Song Trilogy out of the mothballs and marvel not only at Harvey Fierstein's magnum opus, but Anne Bancroft forever becoming a gay icon in her role as Fierstein's mother. This film was one of the very first gay films I ever saw and "the kiss" on screen with Matthew Broderick in his young and studly Ferris Bueller days was awareness-defining for gay Gen X. Please keep the reactions coming! I love your chemistry and the fresh perspective you bring to queer media!
"The gays who can recite this entire monologue.. you know who you are"
Me: 👁👄👁
To be honest, I subconsciously said/told myself Miranda's line, "And you can do anything....right?", each time I achieved something.
Gay women also love this film and there's an active Mirandy fanfiction community 🥰
I take this personally 😂

Welcome back!! Please check out “The Handmaiden”. It’s a Korean film by Park Chan-wook. Mystery, thriller, LGBT.
Oooo sounds fun!

“The gays who can do that entire monologue… you know who you are”…. Wow! feeling slightly attacked 😂
You guys should look at the series Vicious
Vicious is one of the best shows I've seen. It deserved more seasons

Ok, I might have missed your discussion on whether straight actors should play gay, but please, share your thoughts: Alec & Magnus from Shadowhunters.
The great thing about this movie is that it is exactly like that in real life. You get sooo many free clothes working in fashion. Gay heaven.

In order a movie to be gay, it has to have gay main characters.
You gentlemen should read The Velvet Rage by Alan Downs, if you have not already.
