In 1997 during the second round of the playoffs my best friend and I went to the Walden Galleria Mall for an afternoon lunch. We entered at the lower level and rode the escalators up to the food court. I had my Buffalo Sabres hat on and my buddy had his Eric Lindros jersey on. As we approached the top of the escalator... Matthew Barnaby stepped onto the down escalator, hair full of gel, wearing a white dress shirt and slacks. I hollered LET'S GO BUFFALO at him as we rode past when my my buddy jumped on the opportunity to chirp him. Barnaby turned to my friend and leaned over the divide, grinning ear to ear, revealing his BS front teeth and laughing a maniacal cackle. A priceless and unforgettable afternoon running into a living legend and quite possibly the biggest troll in all of hockey lore.
Mathews fathers name is Dwight Hewston. His mother and my grandmother were best friends while living in the Harrington Park Project's in downtown Ottawa. His father was never active in his life, but he knows who it is because it's the same man who is my grandfather. My grandfather and his father passed away at 36 from a brain anerusym (the number look familiar) anyway. i wouldn't accept him as my father either, considering i have aunts and uncles all over Canada. He was in and out of prison, and there were dedicated facebook groups to locate the lost siblings. I met him in 2015 at an alumni game, where his mother confirmed to him, his then wife Veronique, and myself and my mother what we already aware of, he is my uncle. I have never spoken to him much since then, other than him sending me a jersey a few Christmases ago, but we speak to his brother Brent , who is disabled quite often. Hope this was a fun and insightful little read!
The NHL is sorely lacking these lunatic characters like Barnaby, Hextall, Ray, etc. that made the 80s and 90s hockey so special. All the players are sterile robots these days.
I totally agree but.....People need to make up their mind. People are always saying that, but when someone like....Avery....Rempe....Marchand....etc etc enter the league, they get so criticized for lack of skill.
Some are lacking some personality but most players aren't especially top players like McDavid definitely can be a character when he wants to be- especially in some interviews! But hockey players are also usually more humble than most other sport's athletes and they prefer to be stoic and composed most the time- then kick back and let it out later when the opportunity comes! That's the Canadian way!
Jordan Binnington was starting to look like the next Hextall at some point, but he seemed to have mellowed out lately, sadly. Matt Rempe however could potentially become the next vilain in the NHL
You know what I hated rempe regular season (I'm a devil's fan) but he proved himself in the playoffs especially against Florida. Hopefully he grows and tucks his elbow but I got no problems with guys like marchand MT and such.
For everyone bringing up Sean Avery. Sean Avery learned from Barnaby. I watched a lot of Barnaby growing up and yeah, a twenty minute video does not suffice. Barnaby fought everyone. He wasn't a wimp like Avery. He would literally just stand there and laugh while getting hit.

Hahaha, what actually happened is Matt's father was in and out of prison, and the father of the only daughter of her bestfriend. His name was Dwight Hewston, and I know this because he's my grandfather, Matt , and my mother grew up together in the projects in Ottawa. And I've had it confirmed to me, and infront of him, by his mother Sandra. Barnaby was a pleasure to watch when he was on your team we are all diehard sabres fans so I watched his antics for years and I don’t think a video can even cover how much he truly effected the game by getting under the other teams skin
i love pests and instigators because they are funny, and matthew barnaby is one of my favorites of all time...i remember watching him in the 90s when he seemed to be the only Buffalo Sabres that was alive and seemed to care in the playoffs. I lived in Colorado in the late 90s and early 2000s, and I remember the trade deadline approaching and knew that he was available. i was so excited when they got him and he was instantly loved by the avs fans because he produced goals and excitement in is first week with them. after his first goal he saluted the crowd, and i thought it was the coolest thing ever. :)
Hockey will never be like this again. Too many people are sue happy and will claim the nhl gave them CTE looking for payouts. Even if they dont have it. They will pay doctors to say whatever they need to or manipulate words whatever way they need to inorder to get them to say it could be associated with the fights they had while playing for the NHL... greed is why this type of hockey is dead.
I met Barnaby after a Pens game he was super cool let me take some pictures and signed all types of stuff I brought I met him and Kasparaists both were very cordial
Great job on this. I’m eternally fascinated by guys like him who will do whatever it takes to make it in the league. Big brass balls. Any chance you can do Adam Deadmarsh? That dude taking on Derian Hatcher is one of the greatest acts of courage I’ve ever seen in hockey, and probably cut his career short.
I was like 14 when Barnaby was a penguin, his fights when he would be literally laughing and sticking his tongue out while the other guy was pounding his face where LEGENDARY
January 1996. Bought my first house, and got satellite TV installed. It came with Empire Network which showed Sabres games at 1:00 PM the day following the live game. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. A scrawny pest just becoming the greatest agitator? Barnaby. 335 PIMs and 15 goals? I'll take three of him.
There is one sports station in Buffalo and they had a interview with Barnaby on the phone. Barnaby said when he and Rob Ray were playing for the Rochester Americans. Barnaby said Rob Ray skated up to him to proudly showed him his new hockey stick with his name on it. Barnaby said he grabbed the stick and stepped on it which broke the stick. Barnaby said Ray became mad and got the best of him in a fight.
This was the generation of NHL I grew up with and it was awesome, I loved Barnaby, Nash and all these players that you knew shit's gonna get wild everytime they were on ice. And also, Barnaby scoring a goal was in the NHL 99 intro, wearing the sexiest jersey :D
Bang Bang , Rayzer and May Day. Damn proud those days. In the day at Sabreland Matt’s mom would come to plenty of Sabres practices and actually scold him from the bleachers for goofing around on the ice. So cool.
As a former resident of Tampa Bay at the time of Barnaby's tenure there, I feel as though this video glazed over and slightly misrepresented his time with the Lightning. Barnaby was brought on at a time under coach Steve Ludzik, who like an aggressive two man forechecking style. Despite his reputation as being a very physical player, the Lightning needed scoring and were very forthcoming with hopes that Barnaby would prove to be a more offensive player than Wayne Primeau, for whom he was traded. Unfortunately, Barnaby was often too late to contribute to the play offensively, but proved to be a liability when it came to the referees. His behavior seemed to encourage questionable calls by the referees (such as Paul Stewart, who already had a reputation of making calls that often went against the Lightning) when Barnaby got scrappy. Between poor production and often leaving his team short handed, his time in Tampa Bay was exceptionally lack luster. When the next season started up and Ludzik was replaced with John Tortorella, from everything I heard it's not a huge surprise that Torts didn't tolerate Barnaby's antics for long. On a personal note, I will share that I was PSYCHED when we traded and acquired Barnaby back in the day. I remembered well the 7-3 win by Buffalo from a handful of years earlier against the Bolts, and thought he would bring an enthusiasm and energy that was lacking on our team at the time. Fifty-eight games was all he played for the team, managing four goals and four assists. I was so disappointed, and when we traded him to the Rangers (for Zdeno Ciger... who hadn't played in the NHL for six years previously...) it almost felt as though we were trading him to get rid of him. This, after trying to pair him with Vincent Lecavalier to get his offense going. Barnaby might have felt "under-utilized", but I suspect more likely he was more successful as a third line winger bringing high energy in short bursts rather than lugging more ice time as a top six player. Eh, the Lightning won the cup three years after they traded him, so it worked out for TB in the end.
Dont think he ever won a fight playing forthe Rags, but he was loved by all the fans 100%, and opened the door for his replacement...The next great pest ...Avery
Good Video. I remembered Matthew Barnaby in his brief stint with My Rangers. I didn't really think that the move was good for My Rangers. I think that they gave up A Scorer (I think that it might have been Bobby Carpenter, who didn't have the scoring touch that he had when he was A Devil), but, he was a presence & pretty decent Role Player. I also had remembered him as a player with My Other Favorite Team, The Chicago Blackhawks. Let me know what you think & if I was right about The Deal that made him A Ranger.
Wow. I remembrer vividly Barnaby in Victoriaville. He only played 13 games !! One time i remembrer him letting his gloves and helmet on the board before he took the faceoff

rob ray and barnaby having dinner together the night before and then fighting in the game is the most canadian hockey thing ever

I also think they roomed together on rd trips while both in Buffalo

That playing possum fight was the FUNNIEST thing I've seen in perhaps NHL history 🤣🤣🤣🤣
barnaby was a fucking maniac loved that guy
Maniac is such a good word for him 😂
One of my favorite, the guy could play and fight.
As an Isles fan I hated his guts
@@ziggymorris8760 That's fair

I really thought this was gonna be about Sean avery
Me as well
Same
Barnaby and Avery honestly share the same turf.
Lol. Me too.
Avery was not even close compared to this guy. Also this guy actually fought
The NHL needs a couple of new Barnabys. I miss this guy and his antics.
Yo man I wouldn't normally watch a 30 minute documentary from a channel I've never seen before, but this was really well done.
I loved Matt in Buffalo he and Rob Ray were the heart and soul of Buffalo
I grew up 30 mins outside Buffalo and am a Flyers fan.
He gave us fits but he was an absolute beauty.
I respect(ed) him because he wasn't a dirty player, just a gnat that could make your wires cross and take a penalty. He was probably responsible for hundreds of goals on pp's that he wasnt on and never got a point for it.
He was a pest and found a niché in the game to have a career playing a game he loved.
I hope and pray he is free of any head trauma or PTSD from the role he played.
I saw a pod with him a while back and it shed some light into his career. Pretty sure it's nasty knuckles. Check it out.
As a Flyer's fan who also watched the same time period, well said!!!
He has a pod of his own, too if you didn't know.
Barnaby was the only agitator who consistently fought the league's HWs. He was barely 180lbs, fighting guys 240+. Have to be a bit crazy to do it. One of a kind.
Barnaby was a puss. Infuriating (and probably GOAT) agitator, but there are far better examples of smaller guys willing to take on the heavyweights.
Tie Domi
@@negtype13 Domi was bigger/stronger naturally though, despite being shorter, he weighed at least 20lbs more than Barnaby.
Matt Cooke
Barnaby was a toughie no doubt about it. His feud with Lyle Odelein was legendary!
You mean Cornelius! 😂🐵
Sabres....Barnaby, May, Ray. Crazy trio
I was 13 years old when he was traded to Verdun in the QJMHL. He only played 33 games but boy oh boy do I remeber those moments!! He was one crazy SOB at that time and it was something attending to those games!
Me before tapping on the video: “Let me guess; it’s Matthew Barnaby, isn’t it?”
*literally 1 second in* Yep.
Barnaby was fucking gold. His book is great too. I highly recommend.
Mom wanted her sons to have the same last name...
Right. I'm sure that was for the boys.
I thought he would have had to have been adopted for her to get child support for him.

Barnaby was like an NHL Diaz Brother.
Matthew was the OG of Trolling
The Garth snow thing was always a great moment
You're doing an awesome job, this channel will definitely grow.
Thank you man, appreciate that 🙏
@@MSZFilms Not a problem. I enjoy hearing about the history of the players and the league.
