For some reason, people always gloss over that part of the story. Look at 4:35 and that is a big part of the reason why he was injured. On one of the replay angles, you’ll see his bare head hit the ice because the helmet has come off.
Brashear was a thug too to say the least. McSorley actually had SOME skills while Brashear had none at all. Hockey has not become "better" or "safer". It's pretty boring now, with no intensity at all.
Doesn’t matter that they were both enforcers what McSorley did was still unacceptable. And having more skilled players instead of fighters absolutely makes the game better. I have no problem with fighting, but there is no doubt that the actual quality of the game itself has improved
All I know is that I’ve met quite a few professional hockey players in situations where it was the time and the place to make conversation. Marty McSorley was the most affable of any of them. Made time to talk hockey with me and my friends, bought us a round of drinks and even talked about the Brashear incident and was very candid about it. I have a very good bullshit detector and none of it was an act. Very nice man and I’ll never say a bad word about him.
Mcsorley took it too far, but Brashear injuring the Bruins goalie and then mocking the bemch earned him some serious payback. Never go after a goalie! When Marty wanted to fight and Brashear chickened out, it showed who the true coward was... Then Marty should have just kept getting in Donalds face until the cowards dropped his gloves.
I thought playing hockey was about scoring goals.....who actually suits up for an NHL game to fight. these are NHL players not fighters....i don't think nhl player tough guys always want to fight. even fighters don't always want to fight...... the coaches have to take responsibility too. but then again hockey is a weird game because it encourages fighting.... when a game is lost already there is no need to send or have two fighters out on the ice at the same time... i love hockey but always hated the fighting in it.....its not like they're trained fighters anyways.. the fighting looks sloppy..,,. if i want to watch fighting i'll rather watch ufc or boxing where the fighters are actually trained and skilled at what they do....... two guys fighting on skates...wearing hockey equipment, c'mon....you'd rather watch that than them actually tried to score on each other.....
Uhm right now 45 people are actually defending Marty mcsorleys criminal offence on the ice.....not even a hockey play but indeed a criminal offence......my guess is none of you guys are true hockey fans and very few of you even play ice hockey.....what does brashears off ice actions have to do with mcsorleys on ice criminal offence
"It's alleged he assaulted a man after the man had told his wife to leave the weight room because she had her baby with her," Vancouver police spokeswoman Anne Drennan said. "The victim did not receive any serious injuries and there were no punches thrown." At least brashear didn't swing a stick at his head.
When I think of Mcsorley, I think of his war with Probert. Best fight I've ever seen. They fought for 3 minutes, and Marty said no when the refs tried to come in early. The Gilmour hit and the ensuing fight was also awesome. Let's not forget he was also on the Oilers for part of the dynasty.
Marty mcsorley should have been arrested ..handcuffed..finger printed and put in a holding cell until he was bailed out immediately..... This was a criminal act..... donald brashear may have been a dirty player but did nothing criminal... He's just your average enforcer but probably better and stronger than the average enforcer....he like other enforcers are there for their dirty play and Fighting ability not to be choir boys we all know this.... Hitting a guy in the head with your hockey stick is not a hockey play.. that's assault with a deadly weapon.... That's criminal and worthy of jail time... Let's not try to deflect by talking about brashear... Furthermore brashear was not obligated to accept a fight with mcsorley......
I'm not saying what Mcsorley did wasn't bad but nobody ever mentions The Rocket who broke his stick over a player's back and than punched a linesman. No we name a trophy after him??
I work with a guy that's a year older than McSorley and grew up playing baseball with him till they were teenagers. What he says about him explains a lot about his attitude. He acted like an arrogant selfish clown on their teams. He would cry, literally ball his eyes out, apparently everytime he didnt get to play the position he felt he should be playing. I saw it a lot myself playing higher level sports(not the crying but the parentsruining a kids attitude). He was that kid who's parents tell him he's that best and the strongest at everything until he's an entitled POS for the rest of his life. The guy still hasn't even accepted any blame for this let alone any of the other garbage.
The Bruins Dave Forbes attack on Henry Boucha was way worse. He never regained much vision in his right eye and his career ended because of the attack.
Trouba did this same thing earlier this season and the NHL made an excuse for it. Had Brashear worn his helmet correctly he’s probably not out 20 games and McSorley probably doesn’t get suspended for as long as he was.
I don't disagree about the helmet but come on? That's swing was never going for his shoulder. He was being a bitch . Kept loosing to Brash and couldn't handle it.
It should have not involved the police. A 10 game suspension would probably been fine. McSorley lost his mind for a moment and went over the line as has happened many times in the game. Still, Brashear, no choir boy, was taunting and showing no class at all. And he knew better. He knew the culture and unwritten rules. Hockey, going way back before my day in the 70s, was a violent game. Everyone knew the danger. It was part of the attraction. That feeling before starting was palpable. A total rush, unknown and unwanted by the current generation. Oh, it was good. Competition was fierce. The game policed itself. Skilled players were balanced out by guys less skilled but willing to look past their fear and take on whatever came at them. I was always a small guy (140-145) but never turned down a fight. It always felt good to know that you "showed up". Today, in our risk averse society, the focus on everything is on safety. That's what the people want and I'm an anachronism. I get that. But they took a great game that was almost primal in its attraction and turned it into figure skating with a puck. Yes, the skill level today is better than ever, and no one ever has to worry about defending themselves or their mates. Not saying that it is better or worse; it's just 2 separate sports now. I miss the hockey that was played for the first 80 years or so and am bored by the game of today. Others, dare I say most, do not. Masculinity is being slowly drilled out of boys...it's toxic, violent, scary, or whatever. Or so they say. Today's men believe it's honorable to hide behind an authority figure, even a woman, when facing danger. Old time hockey and its attendant moral structure are no longer valued, not in the sport or in life. And that is a shame.
Wtf are you talking about? 😂😂 it’s assault with a weapon Ya JA. And this was like 20 years ago? Are you drunk? Or was this little BS story just something you’ve been holding onto for a long time?🤦 which of “todays men” are you even referring to, because I PROMISE if you let me whack you with a hockey stick you’re gonna immediately change this whole “ I’m a tough cowboy” shit.😂😂😂
Brashear brought this on himself. You can't act the tough guy and try to intimidate the Bruins bench then decline the fight. People swing sticks on occasion he just happened to catch Brashear in the noggin.
That incident doesn't even rank compared to what McSorely did here... Steve Moore was injured by the dog pile that developed afterwards. Very different circumstances. People always bring this incident up in videos like this. I didn't like what Bert did but people have blown it out of proportion. Meanwhile Steve Moore was and still is a coward.
@@Jersey209 Yes Bert took it too far. I didn't like what he did but it snowballed in a way that was out of his control. It was a situation that warranted a suspension but not the charges and litigation that followed. Moore goes on TV and talk shows every 5 years and does his whole woe is me spiel about how he deserves more money. They say if you play stupid games and you win stupid prizes and that is what Moore did on the ice. He played like a goon too and he could have ended someone else's career just as easily. Live by the sword and die by the sword. So tired of Moore playing the victim. He's not even paralyzed like everyone thinks that he is.
@@Adam202 I do agree that Moore dragged the whole thing out WAAAAY too long after the incident. Bertuzzi knew he f’d up and seemed genuinely remorseful
Safer game?? Show me the stats that add up to it being "safer". The slew foots and chicken wing hits to the head etc etc.. There are still targeted injuries. Lots...
Safer game? BS. The guys are bigger, stronger, faster. My Bro said watch Tom Wilson he injures people. I watched just 5 mins, the guy he injured was out weeks.
At 1:44, you see the list of all the leaders in penalties and fights, but the funny thing is all of these guys were decent hockey players. Every one of them.
That conditional discharge was a joke. He should have been charged and have a record. “I was disappointed in him as a hickey person?” After the fact? McSorely was an unrepentant goon. PS I love that you called him the consummate goon and have subscribed. He was exactly that.
People fail to mention the reason McSorley was losing his mind was because Brashear ran the goalie. Thanks for including that part! Brashear would rather taunt the bench after he sent the goalie off on a strecher then fight Marty again. But the coaches are just as much to blame. Canucks send the goon out with 30 seconds left , So of course Boston has to send out McSorley . Had Brashear just fought him again it never would have happened. And besides all that, he didnt even slash him that hard, I been double handed tomahawked right over the head and I didnt go down. Dave Browns shots to the head of Tomas Sandstrum were way worse .....And he did it twice!!!
The number of people defending McSorley in this comment section is hilarious. Yes, Brashear was also a POS at times who did bad things off the ice, on the ice, and ran their goalie, but so did McSorley many times off the ice, on the ice, etc. and that still doesn't justify assault with a weapon, even if he meant to hit his shoulders which sounds like an excuse. Also, tell me a single enforcer, grinder, power forward, agitator, etc. who hasn't gone too far, ran the goalie, etc. to get under the opponents skin? Literally all of them have and McSorley has been all bark no bite in other incidents too with refusing to fight others while talking trash. And him refusing to fight him there isn't being cowardly. That's being smart for his team when they need it earlier in the game. It's McSorley's fault for taking the bait. This is like the people debating between Marchand or Burrows being worse all over again and when both of them are equal with their past incidents. Furthermore, for the people who are bringing up that off-ice incident involving Brashear, that was an accusation which never went anywhere. There was a verbal argument that led to the police showing up. There were no serious injuries on the accuser or punches thrown and he didn't press charges. He did get into other incidents off the ice since retirement too and is low on money, but so have many tough guys in that era now. It's what happens when they were used, suffered drug issues, CTE which McSorley gave him more of, etc. and then are discarded. McSorley has gotten into similar off-ice altercations too and hasn't done too well for himself since retirement either. So has the majority of the NHL tough guys including some Hall of Famers. That's the world and if you go outside. He's still respected by many in his 50s playing in the LNAH. He's had issues and incidents, but that isn't him being a terrible person, that's him struggling. He's doing better for himself today. McSorley was a POS and that's all there is to it. Some of you sound like the same people defending Voynov when he was banned lol.
It's pretty wild how such reprehensible and unforgivable behavior was essentially tolerated, or at least punished very differently compared to today. I got into hockey in the 90-91 season in my tween years and saw more of the tail end of it but the 90s were still pretty brutal. Essentially anytime Scott Stevens was still playing was still the brutal, intent to injure era.
People often forget that many of these enforcers were also skilled players. Goonery was just part of the game. Despite the NHL’s overall softening, nothing gets the crowd on its feet faster than a good old hockey fight…
@@stevencooke6451 Brashear didn't answer the bell and proceeded to taunt the Bruins bench throughout the game. Who was the coward? Fun fact: Everyone hated Donald Brashear.
McSorley is one of the greatest HeavyWeights in NHL history. We watched Brashear go from not very good with Montreal to also one of the greatest Heavyweights in NHL history. Probably the greatest shoulder/upper body strength the way he could rag-doll some monsters.
On The Coaches Corner Don Cherry actually defended Marty. He said that he was an ageing veteran and was pretty close to retiring. Donald Brashear was a younger man who won a fight with Marty. Cherry said that out of respect he should have left Marty alone for the rest of the game. Instead he taunted Marty and kept rubbing it in. Marty was a proud veteran who snapped.
The “code of violence” is not senseless. It evolved out of an extremely fast and dangerous and physical game. The Americanization of hockey has not benefited the game. It is far less physical now and - as a result - less passionate. It’s basically soccer-on-ice.
believe me Mcsore was the real deal & he was loved here in LA even after the fat stick incident & I AIN'T TALK'N THE HEAD SHOT FOLKS! In any case what I loved about Big Mac was he never ever backed down & Bra had his number, Mac still was willing after 9 rounds of which he lost more then to anyone else, that's a player! & he scored some big big goals for us always when we needed it so badly every now & then he would come through. Had a beer & a hot dog with him at the Staples Center VIP Stogie with Rogie night he spoke to everyone came by to speak with each & every person that night then he'd go back to a quite far corner & wolf 3 more hotdogs, great guy.
Loved MsSorley, hated brashear. I was too young to remember them, but all the old school games on TH-cam, combined with highlights are great, and it's clear which player is the one you'd want on your team... McSorley all the way.
Donald Brashear is the grand nephew of Carl Brashear. Carl was the first black Navy Diver in the US Navy and his story is in the movie “Men of Honor” with Robert DeNiro. Sounds like Donald is following Carl’s tradition; there are few black hockey players but that didn’t stop him. “I don’t know why ANYONE would want to be a [hockey player]/Navy diver!” DeNiro’s famous speech
I met Marty after a game in LA in the winter of 2014. We talked about this incident and he stated to me in the most sincere way that he meant to hit Donald in the shoulder to get his attention. I honestly don't think this dude had any intentions to hurt Brasher the way he did. They were both enforcers in a league that glorified them for what they did. His mistake was the pinnacle to why hockey has been pussified since. I think Marty only wanted to fight and not hurt him that way. It's too bad that his legacy had to end up with this black eye because of an honest mistake. Those who know, know.....And Brasher knows it was an honest mistake also.
@@nowitstimetosee18 I'm only going by what the man told me. Mcsorley never jumped on Brashear after he hit him in the head with the stick. Bertuzzi jumped on that kids back and beat on him while he was face down. Two very different incidents. You don't have to like what I said, but I believed Marty when he talked about it. If he was truly a jerk he would have just joked about the incident, but he didn't. There was no joking in his voice when he talked about it, only remorse.. @@CoreyTourigny “i’m only going by what the man told me.” Yes believe him instead of your lying eyes🙄 You are letting your opinion of the man cloud your judgment, and ignoring facts. FYI, Bertuzzi did *not* “beat on him while he was face down” - he hit Moore, they went down together, and Bertuzzi never even tried to hit him again, the only thing Bertuzzi did after that was brace himself and tried to protect himself because Nikolishin was right there hitting Bertuzzi immediately. This is very clear after watching it from several angles. It was the effects of being at the bottom of the pile-on that made Moore’s injuries worse. McSorely may have repeated his lie so often he believes it himself, but if you watch the video, there is no doubt he *intended* to hit Brashear in the head. McSorley was in complete control of himself and his stick, and Brashear didn’t make any sudden unexpected movements. McSorley wasn’t some clumsy kid with poor stick control. His stick was never going to hit anything other than Brashear’s head. Bertuzzi never meant for Moore to be injured that way, but his punch that knocked Moore out was deliberately thrown. McSorely never meant for Brashear to be injured that way, but the slash to the head was deliberate. To state that Brashear “knows it was an honest mistake also” is completely disingenuous. Brashear defended fighting in hockey, not what McSorely did to him, and doesn’t like to talk about this incident, but repeatedly said that it wasn’t acceptable and he doesn’t understand why McSorely did it. Bertuzzi was visibly devastated by what happened to Moore. His genuine remorse was clear to everybody and it’s why the incident didn’t end his career. McSorely never took responsibility, never showed real remorse, and that’s why he never played in the NHL again. It was no “honest mistake.” And I know that’s a hard pill to swallow about somebody you like. I’m not denying that McSorley is a nice guy. As far as I can remember, he was always a nice guy _off the ice._ That doesn’t change the fact that he was downright dirty sometimes on ice. And if he was truly remorseful about it, he wouldn’t still be denying any responsibility and trying to blame everyone and everything else, like he did just last week on the radio (halford & brough). (and as an aside regarding: “his mistake was the pinnacle to why hockey has been pussified since”. The sentence is so atrocious that it’s unclear exactly what you are trying to say, other than somehow trying to tie this to a notion of a kindler, gentler NHL😄 As someone who started watching hockey when my uncle bought season tickets for the Oilers first year in the NHL, let me assure you that the idea such incidents and the backlash against them have to no effect on the nature of the game. The reduction in fighting is due mainly to 3 things: better officiating means that players no longer have to enforce rules themselves (i.e. a lot of the violence came from referees not seeing or not acting on infractions), an influx of European players (all of whom had to be extremely skilled just to get noticed, and aren’t fighters because they came from leagues were fighting was not tolerated), and the salary cap which made it financially non-viable to keep around players who are more likely to be sitting in the penalty box than scoring.)
@@valerierodger Better officiating!!?? You're kidding me right? That was a total snowflake response if I ever read one. You can judge me all you want, I believe the man had no intention to do what he did bottom line. Bertuzzi was scared he was going to be locked up and someone's cell wife, that's why he was crying in his press conference. He hounded Moore like ravenous wolf and KNEW hitting him the way he did would drop him face first on the ground. He aimed and intended to hit Moore that way. Marty's incident was and still can be argued as an accidental stick to the shoulder going to high. It happens every game along the boards. If you watch hockey, you see all the high sticks and a lot of them are whacks at arms that get away from the player sometimes. Deal with it.
If you watch it in slow motion, Marty did go for Donald's shoulder pad. But at the end of the day if you bring your stick up that high you run the risk of something bad happening. In which case it did.
You're saying this as if Vancouver hasn't been on the other end of the dirty hits the majority of the time outside of the Bertuzzi-Moore incident? And let's get the facts straight with that. What Bertuzzi did was disgusting, but it's already been proven that Moore has likely lied about most of the situation. The punch wasn't what did the majority of the damage and it's been proven he dove to exaggerate it. It was the players dogpiling him that did it. Also, the medical records they released and the many ones he and his lawyer claims he has but refuses to show publicly have pretty much confirmed that he's lying about the majority of the damage he suffered. He was a trash grinder whose career was almost over and soon retiring so he used this to get lots of money out of Bertuzzi. There's no proof of the majority of his claims and people around him say he's lying about many of them such as his breathing, sleep, and light sensitivity issues or say that he was healed from them a few years later despite his claims of him still dealing with it to this day. He didn't deserve to get anywhere near as much as he did out of Bertuzzi for it and it basically ended a possible HHOF career as a result with him not being able to play his style of game in the league ever again. For that reason, I have no sympathy for him.

Donald Brashear is an awesome person. I had the chance to be the guy selling video game stuff to him for a lil while. Very soft spoken, very calm, accidentally extremely funny all the time. I remember this one time he had lost or broken his nintendo wii rca cables, and he came to the store under heavy rain, console in hand and asked me those missing wires by pointing at the empty connectors.... of his now soaking wet nintendo wii ;) I have always been curious to know if when he plugged back that console it was still working or not lolll.

What about Wayne Maki used Ted Green's head as a pinata in 1969, or when Eddie Shore ended Ace Bailey's career in 1933. This guy mentions Dino Ciccarelli's incident, but leaves those two out?
Donald was actually a pretty big bully and tough player, thought that's why he did that. I don't think he thought it was going to do that kind of damage but I don't think he considered what it could potentially do.
Donald Brashear seems to be a great guy. Not arrogant like Avery or guys like these. I loved him with the Habs when I was young. Certainly more then Mario Temblay back for ppl who met him in person during the Memorial Cup in Laval.
Its always an issue with Vancouver. Whether it’s the organization, the city or the players. Hell even actor Joshua Jackson got in trouble multiple times at Vancouver games.
People don’t really know this but…a lot of hockey players back even in the 90’s would play intoxicated, not all…obviously but a lot and I wouldn’t doubt an over the hill enforcer doing it and making such a stupid decision like this.

McSorely was pure garbage. On every team for which he ever played. Incredible strength and stamina, to be sure. But pure garbage If he’d have been better coached, like say Scott Stevens was to control his goonish tendencies, he could’ve been a helluva player - Almost like Stevens, who himself started off as little more than a goon but was crafted into a top defenseman by playing smarter and letting his notoriety do most of the work for him. McSorely clearly had the skills to become such a player, but his fighting was deemed a more valuable asset to teams like the Oilers, Kings and Rangers. Interestingly enough, ALL of which retained his services to make sure no one ate Gretzky’s lunch at school. And while Brashear will never be mistaken for an altar boy, McSorely’s assault on him was beyond gutless. Right up there with some of the biggest stains in the NHL, along with some of the ones mentioned in the comments.
There's a story in my town that Marty was at one of the local bars partying having a good time then shit hit the fan.. the story goes he was drinking a shit ton and did huge lines of blow having a great time(this town has a habit of saying anyone with some kind of importance has a secret cocaine habbit🤔) as the night went on jealousy from a group of wannabee tuff guys that got all pissy from the attention Marty was getting and had the bad idea of trying to fight him. 1vs1 wasn't the idea they had they wanted to jump him so once the beef started Marty had finished it just as quick he had 3 of em piled ontop of each other on the pool table buy slamming 2 of em together and the 3rd getting K.O with a hook and being tossed on the 2 men on the pool table. After he had another guy buy the neck back, peddling begging for marty to lay a beating into him. I don't know how true it is, but he was at the local bar for sure I've bin told, but how true the fight was is unknown. It seems a bit much, but I've seen a lot more craziness in fights from guys that have nowhere near the physical ability that Marty has so I do take this story with a grain of salt but it is one of the 1000s I've herd and read about online with Marty clearing a bar out.
It was always humorous to hear McSorely name drop whenever he'd get himself in trouble. Then you'd hear Gretzky, Coffey, Messier repeat the same defenses of him word for word.
NHL set the rules and the style of play, McSorley was just following them. NHL wants blood and guts and they got what they wanted. Don't be shocked when McSorley does what he was taught to do.

It's kinda like watching pong or tennis. Fast skater skates fast loses puck other fast skater skates fast. Rinse repeat.
Very nice man and I’ll never say a bad word about him.

the coaches have to take responsibility too. but then again hockey is a weird game because it encourages fighting.... when a game is lost already there is no need to send or have two fighters out on the ice at the same time...
i love hockey but always hated the fighting in it.....its not like they're trained fighters anyways.. the fighting looks sloppy..,,. if i want to watch fighting i'll rather watch ufc or boxing where the fighters are actually trained and skilled at what they do.......

The good ole days of hockey
The Bruins Dave Forbes attack on Henry Boucha was way worse. He never regained much vision in his right eye and his career ended because of the attack.
Trouba did this same thing earlier this season and the NHL made an excuse for it. Had Brashear worn his helmet correctly he’s probably not out 20 games and McSorley probably doesn’t get suspended for as long as he was.

After felonious assault he claims he was “disappointed in Brashear for not fighting?” What a troglodyte (must be polite here).
This will be unpopular, but Brashear had it coming. He had to know that with that behaviour and refusing to fight something was going to happen.
You know why it's unpopular? Because it's a stupid and reckless comment.
Dawg he hit his head on the ice and had a concussion. I'm not excusing brashear but come on man.
That wouldn't fit their agenda that's why they left it out.
I feel Marty has explained the situation and almost every enforcer has agreed

Essentially anytime Scott Stevens was still playing was still the brutal, intent to injure era.
"Intent to injure era...." Please stop.

It was no “honest mistake.”
And I know that’s a hard pill to swallow about somebody you like.
Marty's DNA has been linked to the Hanson Brothers.
If you watch it in slow motion, Marty did go for Donald's shoulder pad. But at the end of the day if you bring your stick up that high you run the risk of something bad happening. In which case it did.
Bretuzzi was worse
What is it with Vancouver and dirty hits ? The Bertuzzi-Moore incident happened there too 😮
You're saying this as if Vancouver hasn't been on the other end of the dirty hits the majority of the time outside of the Bertuzzi-Moore incident?

Brashear: “mama, I finally passed my grade tree!”😂
Its always an issue with Vancouver. Whether it’s the organization, the city or the players. Hell even actor Joshua Jackson got in trouble multiple times at Vancouver games.
People don’t really know this but…a lot of hockey players back even in the 90’s would play intoxicated, not all…obviously but a lot and I wouldn’t doubt an over the hill enforcer doing it and making such a stupid decision like this.
1988: Dino Ciccarelli hits Luke Richardson pretty hard with his stick. Richardson still standing
2000: McSorley BARELY tapped Brashear and Brashear is a little bitch about it
McSorely was pure garbage. On every team for which he ever played.
Incredible strength and stamina, to be sure.
But pure garbage
If he’d have been better coached, like say Scott Stevens was to control his goonish tendencies, he could’ve been a helluva player - Almost like Stevens, who himself started off as little more than a goon but was crafted into a top defenseman by playing smarter and letting his notoriety do most of the work for him.
He was Mack the co-pilot in Con Air
Ditch the overdramatic background music.
To the beard due commentator, Kermit the frog called and he wants his voice back!
When hockey was great and wasn’t weak….Brashear was the biggest baby in the league!!
Reckless indeed. I do believe that he was trying to hit him in the shoulder. Bad move for sure. Scary.
McSorley was trying to kill him because he was humiliated by Brashear in a fight. Dude was always that kind of guy.
Sad. Mcsolrey got his ass kicked and wanted another shot for his own ego and when he couldnt have it he swung at his head. No different from a 2 year old in the sandbox who wants his toy back.
MacSorley was just tired of getting his ass kicked and knew he couldn't beat Brashear in a fair fight
