Pushing the inner tent in to create the vestibule is sheer genius. Marvelous! As a motorcycling camper, I can quickly put all my gear there. Plenty of room...
I love that Dan puts more thought into the design of a tent that most big brands claim they do. The detail and thought based on one man's real world experience outweighs most team efforts from other mega outdoor corporations. Well done Mr D, thank god for tent geeks !
I'm really stoked for the x-dome but I agree with your short on it Andrew - holding out for a solid version for the British climate. I'm trying to cut down on tents as I've found some great ones that I'm enjoying (mostly the solid x-mid) but this would push me to get another one!
So much innovation?...Now a days you shouldn't even have to slide in poles. They should be built in especially now that you have lighter stronger materials.
3-yr proud Xmid1 owner here. You gotta love Dan's commitment, attention to details, and I'm thinking the best customer service I've ever encountered. Often, it is Dan that takes your inquiry.
I haven't bought a tent in 15 years and I am out of the scene. This was a great low-key presentation of their product. I am impressed, and now I want one!
The price is good too.. I just spent like $500 on a Nemo Hornet and I'm having buyers remorse.. some of these 'ultra lights' can reach a thousand bucks or more.. a 'good' tent for under $500 is hard to find anymore.. They also have free standing tents.. X-Dome1, its $369 and around 36oz., looks like it can fit two people nicely too, (my Hornet can really only hold 1). Its on back order, so if you want a free-stander, place the order now and you should get it in spring of next year. Thats what I'm getting.
I love Durston. Seems like such a genuinely nice guy and I’m glad this will be my first Durston product. Can’t wait to feature it on my channel. Coming soon!
This is the tent I've been waiting for it has checked all the boxes I was looking for. As soon as I saw Dan D's video on it I ordered mine right away. This is all coming from a dedicated hammock camper.
Well, now I know Dan Durston is a cool guy; I already knew the product was cool. I love the genuine communication style Dan brings to the table; this lends a heck of a lot of confidence.
I bikepack and paddle camp so never really got on the trekking pole tent game. Especially after watching buddies struggle to set them up on rock slabs, gravel lots, porches, platforms and all the other weird areas we’d end up camping. Last thing I wanted to do after a day of tough biking or paddling is spent any extra time or energy before getting to sleep. I preordered this tent as soon as it came out as it meets all of my needs and then some. 👍👍 Dan- can’t wait to try it out!
I’m UK based, have been camping/backpacking for the best part of four decades now, with a huge variety of kit and I often do multi-week ‘ultralight’ trips these days. I ordered this within minutes of launch as it looks like it pretty much ticks off everything I want - I suspect this is going to be exactly what I want from a tent.
When i watched the first video Dan put out my initial feelings were to sit back a few months and wait for a solid inner version and to listen to what other UK TH-cam reviewers thought about it but then i decided that the most popular You Tubers have chosen some tents that are absolutely shite for my needs and they have chosen tents that are assault style tents that are made for Alpine style mountaineering to use for Backpacking when non of them have got a clue what Alpine style mountaineering is so i went with my gut the same night after watching Dan's first video and bought one and i am eagerly looking forward to trying it out although my idea is to use it as a 3 season and mostly summer tent. 5 years in the making by someone who has a proven track record is as good a guarantee as i need.
Dan: Tip on checking which side of head is better: iPhone app 'measure' has a level built in. You can use it to see which way the ground is tilted. A good flat area usually can stay within +1 , -1 degrees. Positive = right side is higher, negative = left side is higher
I’ve camped from my canoe, bike, and motorcycle with an X-Mid 1 for 3 years. I’ve camped for over 75 years in many states and 3 countries. Dan’s X-Mid has been the best designed tent I’ve found. It doesn’t do much for my snoring, but does most other tent-type things very well. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
I can not wait to get this tent. I placed my order on October 8th when it first became available. I’m that person that loves a free standing tent over the trekking pole version and will carry the extra weight. Looking so forward to using this tent!
The only other highlight in the XDome that didn’t get mentioned in the video is how much lower the rain fly coverage is to the ground compared to other tents which gives this tent a true 3 season rating and maybe even 4 season if you use the trekking pole support. I happen to own two of Dan Durston’s Backpacks and the XDome is arriving any day now. Durston’s attention to detail and push for advancement in backpacking gear is commendable he truly lives and breathes the goal of better gear at a very affordable price for everyone to enjoy the outdoors without the weight burden.
The tent looks fantastic. I would love to try one out when motorcycle camping. Was very close to getting the X-Mid but for my needs I wanted something free standing. Great to see how much effort and thought he puts into his products. Like to hear him talking about not crazy mark ups as well. That’s the type of stuff people want to hear when buying a product as you know you will be getting the best out there. Nice work again Dan Durston.
Hey Dan and Dan, loving the flow and vibe of your enthusiasm for gear and backpacking. I would be stoked to see some sort of combined Dan and Dan trip videos in the future.
I love my x mid 2 solid, and i was going to get a 1 person version, but ill wait for a solid version of the x dome (we need draught free tents in the UK) i really like the design, 10/10 Dan for designing such good gear. Its nice to see so much passion and thought put into a product.
In case anyone was wondering, this is an absolutely awesome tent for moto camping, too. Crazy light (for motorcycling, anyway), and poles will easily fit in most panniers. 😃
Vestibule, fly, storage and external frame are the BIG innovations. Weight and simplicity are the huge win-wins. I like the Moss Walrus zipout side fly access which this tent mimics. Should be a very successful product
Pre-ordered mine minutes after receiving the email notification. Didn't really think I needed yet another tent, but after looking at the specs and watching the video I could not get my credit card out quick enough. :)
Thank you so much for the review! I’m so excited for this tent! I was able to pre-order from the first batch getting shipped this month! I have the X-mid 1, but really miss a free standing tent and was thrilled when I saw this one come out, especially since it’s a Durston!
All my camping is on a motorcycle so I usually want a tent that is easy to pack and easy to pitch. I am not a backpacker, I don't care how heavy it is. BUT I have been in a tent during a tornado and for $50 I still have that tent and use it all the time.
Great tent. Thanks for showing it. Thanks for explaining how you procure the carbon fiber poles. Paying a retailer for the poles yields an MSRP that’s a real smile wiper (or a purchase that you hide from your spouse til she carries it & notices how light it is).
Thanks Dan & Dan for this. Looking forward to more videos on the tent over the coming months. Some excellent thought gone into the design, and I can see myself being happy in the rain in this one.
Wow, that is some tent. I see they're sold out until April. Not surprised. I nearly didn't click on it, thinking oh, another new tent. But this is pretty revolutionary.
I'm happy to see a fly first pitch tent. As he said here in Europe almost all of the tents are fly first, I understand why the US tends not to but over the pond our weather is far more random, you guys do have the crazy storms and things but you know well in advance, where as we can have fog, sunburn sunshine and heavy rain all in one day that was forecasted to just be cloudy and so our tends tend to be stronger and more waterproof at the cost of being heavier and smaller. So its great to see sort of the best of both worlds being combined here, the large size of a US tent and the light weight with the fly first of Europe and some of the strengthening measures.
@kke almost all fly first here are both at same time. We just say fly first to mean the fly is on the outside while pitching. I don't know whether it means something slightly different for you
Your argument about US weather really makes no sense. The US is massive compared to Europe with numerous types of geography and weather. What you described is not uncommon at all depending on the state you’re in. US tents just suck IMO and external frame with a fly and inner pitch just makes sense IMO.
@woolengrappler if you were to make an average of the US compared to an average of Europe. You don't really have tents that are built for a single state or mountain range or an individual country in the case of Europe. You sort of just have the European wide tent or the American wide tent. I know there are some places such as the Olympic peninsula that will rain so much it will make the wettest places in Europe look dry but compared to the US average that's an outlier
Durston Gear is GREAT! I took 7 scouts to Philmont with the X-mid 1. It rained cats and dogs the 1st day, and then rained a bit the following 2 days. The X-Mid was not stressed even slightly. Completely dry inside and shed rain with just a few shakes when packing up. If you brought an extra back-up trekking pole, (2 is 1, and one is none), you can even set up the door of the fly as an awning and it's SO very nice. Such a great tent for the ~55 mile trek. Anyway, Durston for the W.
@@durstongear BTW, I love me a chair when backpacking. I also love using tent footprints (I have the X-Mid one), because gear failure in the back country is not so great. But I knew I wouldn't be happy with carrying 2 items by the end of the 55 miles. Solution: I brought a Z-fold. It not only functioned as a backup to my Nemo Tensor, it was also my tent footprint and sitting mat. Every day when we got to camp, I'd put out the Z-fold, lay on it to make sure of the slope, and "fling" the X-Mid open onto it. There's a diagonal to the setup, but you get used to the alignment after doing it a few times. I'd pull it back out after pitching the tent to sit on for dinner, then slide it back under before bed. Z-folds can cost as high as the $60 Therm-a-Rest. But I went with the $15 one from HikerDirect (Alps) with practically the same performance. The point is, the folding mat is a great companion for the X-mid. It fulfills 3 functions: footprint, sitting mat, and backup sleeping pad. The Alps one was almost perfect, maybe 1 panel longer would be even better.
Thanks for making this. Would be a great help when deciding on what to choose. Great fan of the Durston philosophy. PS I love the little squirrel photo bombing the show😂
It’s cool & all. I paid for a top $ tent years ago. Hubba.?.?Hubba Hubba. 2 person but solo lot .just extra room. Thx for heads up on 15 polyester. See if i can get a few yds. I have been wanting to make a tent on my own.
This is next level. Pure effing genius, if you are looking to upgrade or a first time tent owner and you aren't strongly considering a Durston of any model...you are doing it wrong...no shade on other high tech quality tents ..
@durstongear Absolutely welcome!, I've been trail loafing for 40 years and this is the best thing ever, also, @DanBecker is the brand ambassador we needed!
Real nice design. I like it. I didn't care for the loss in head & shoulder room of the Xmid design. But I really like this tent. Not a savings in weight to the competition but the design is very useful in terms of efficiency and gear storage. And of course, the fly first pitch. Nice job!
Looks awesome and sturdy at 2 lbs. I do wish it had a 2nd vestibule (a must for the 2-P version) and I hope it has a groundsheet that includes the vestibule floor (very important in rain, wet soil, on sand, etc to keep gear clean). Otherwise we’ll need to bring a piece of plastic or Tyvek, which is inefficient. It’s my only gripe with the X-mids (ground cover only covers the tent).
Our groundsheets only cover the floor, but because the fly is a rectangle a groundsheet for a different tent can nicely fill the fly. A normal 2P groundsheet would fill the X-Dome 1+ fly.
That's a great looking tent and I honestly expected a higher price for the upscale materials used, so kudos for direct pricing without distributor and retailer markup.
I love how this thing is gonna take a lot of nasty weather. Having lived all over BC, this is exactly the tent I'm looking for. Can't wait to snatch the 2p in 2025. Nice job Dan! Super sweet.
PLEASE make a Dyneema version! Dan, that would be my dream tent… and I think it could handle ski touring very well. (my Xmid 2 pro is still dreamy, I just don’t like fussing with trecking pole tents in the snow.)
@@durstongear Hurray! If you need someone to test a pilot version in four season PNW weather, coast, mountains, and rainforests Id love to help! Especially if it'll be 4 season.
I love my Terranova Pioneer 2 for hiking and my bikepacking adventures, but I have to say, I think this would be suited to me even more. I love the huge difference in weight, I don't need a 2 person tent but this extra area would allow all my gear to be inside the tent and safe. I live in the UK so for me pitch outer/all together is a must as it rains so much. This is going to be a go to tent I know for bikepackers. Perfect size, weight and looks strong.
What bothers me is the "large" packed size of 45cm, sadly to wide for most drop bar bikes. I like it when the tent is up front as a hole pack and i dont have enough space for such lonmg poles :/ 30cm poles were so much better. Everything else sound very nice and would be worth a shot.
@ the length of pack always is determined by the poles. I always store my poles in the frame bag under the top tube, then the tent packs away about half the size. The pole length is the compromise also for being carbon fibre. Wouldn’t work as well with more shorter joints. I for one am keen to give it a try. 900g off a tent pack is huge. I’m not that bothered by weight for vital things, but shaving that off and not compromising on space seems like a no brainer to me.
I just got off a 24 day Grand Canyon trip and we got hit with the most intense storm I’ve ever been caught in… I was extremely nervous about having a trekking pole tent (xmid solid) when I heard it was gonna be windy and raining. But that thing was bombproof after putting up two guy lines from the peaks. Crazy good work from da
Hi. Great presentation. I motorbike camp and don’t worry about weight too much, but have decided to start hiking/camping again as well. I have been looking at tents and there are a number of high end tents on my list. That list has just gone in the bin, I am getting a Dome! Your spirit and enthusiasm, plus great design, sold it to me! Well done and all the best! Nice job Dan.
Love this design, owned XMid 2, get it from retailers, thanks Dan for doing direct selling & no more through retailer, Very Good approach & highly appreciate that, can’t wait for two persons type of this, love from Malaysia, happy backpacking all🤗🫡
I don't think this one is for me (happy x-mid 2 owner), but I can't get enough of seeing how Dan innovates whatever product he puts out and at such reasonable prices. Great looking tent, might be taking a hard look at the 2 person version...
That's a cool tent idea, I like it. I have not adapted to using hiking sticks, so freestanding is a huge deal for me. Also just having a tent in the car for quick overnight camping trips is another plus. Still thinking someone should figure out how to take the poles and combine them together to make a hiking stick. Perhaps different pole widths, so one could slide inside another. Or ring clips that surround the poles.
As a guy that has found myself in multiple situations where staking out a tent just isnt possible, I've been disregarding Durston X Mids/trekking pole tents. Also I've been priortizing low profile bivy for stealth. But now that im bike camping, this looks like an absolute winner for keeping my bike and stuff concealed and lots of space to chill after a long day. Really impressive weight (same as my military bivy) and price
They make a free-standing tent too.. if 36oz isnt too heavy.. I dont use pole tents cause I like to set up a base and then go hiking aka I use my poles.., I dont wanna tear down my tent everytime I go for a hike or risk losing my spot.. but it sounds like you might have 'other' needs

Ok Dan you’ve done it, can I start a petition to see you test out some big canvas hot tents this winter? Soringbars, bells, walls, etc. or small nylons whatever but, just an idea, have a good one!
Good to hear that comment about europe and how we find it weird/crazy to rig the inner tent and then put on the outer layer. Like going out in rain and put on a rain jacket after 5 minutes. But we probably have different climate in general. Nice and light tent though by the looks of it!

Mr. Durston is amazing! His customer service is unlike anything I have ever experienced. My family of 6 owns 3 different versions of the xmid.
Thanks Mike! I appreciate the longtime support.

DAN CAN YOU PLEEEEASE DESIGN A BIVY SACK TO THIS LEVEL OF INGENUITY!!!
I love the 1+. I want to be able to bring my bag inside.
I would love to see this tent made all in Dyneema, would be the ultimate shelter 🤩
I’m standing in line for the X-Dome 2
Waiting for the 2+
We have a notification list on our website. It'll be ready in a few months.
@ I’m on it
@@durstongearwhat will the pack weight be?
@@jess_nwos We will announce that with the launch in a few months. Usually 20-30% heavier than 1P.
Thanks for making this. Would be a great help when deciding on what to choose. Great fan of the Durston philosophy.
PS I love the little squirrel photo bombing the show😂
I really like camping outdoors, having tents like that is great
I anticipated this to be way more than $369 that’s insanely good
It’s cool & all. I paid for a top $ tent years ago. Hubba.?.?Hubba Hubba. 2 person but solo lot .just extra room. Thx for heads up on 15 polyester. See if i can get a few yds. I have been wanting to make a tent on my own.
I can’t believe I listened to your infomercial AND SO GLAD I DID♥️.
Would LOVE to see a dyneema version of this and the 2p that’s still to come!!!
Just ordered the tent!
This is next level. Pure effing genius, if you are looking to upgrade or a first time tent owner and you aren't strongly considering a Durston of any model...you are doing it wrong...no shade on other high tech quality tents ..
Thanks for the kind words :)
@durstongear Absolutely welcome!, I've been trail loafing for 40 years and this is the best thing ever, also, @DanBecker is the brand ambassador we needed!
As an original Drop X-mid 1 that I still love, agree 100%.
I preordered this tent and I am so excited for it to arrive!!!! I want to take it out on the trail asap 😍😍😍
Real nice design. I like it. I didn't care for the loss in head & shoulder room of the Xmid design. But I really like this tent. Not a savings in weight to the competition but the design is very useful in terms of efficiency and gear storage. And of course, the fly first pitch. Nice job!
This is a marvel of a tent. Apropos, I hope you guys used this opportunity to carve dan+dan into a local bench.
Yes we carved a few D+D trees in the rolling hills of Wisconsin ;)

Yup, this is my next tent. Me and buddy did the Four Pass Loup this summer and he had an X-Mid 2 which he never pitched correctly the whole trip.
But did he have fun ?
Very glad I got a couple of these tents in the early order. One for me, one for a friend. Looking forward to them 👌🏼
😁
Early Mist, you are truly a great friend!
I love how this thing is gonna take a lot of nasty weather. Having lived all over BC, this is exactly the tent I'm looking for. Can't wait to snatch the 2p in 2025. Nice job Dan! Super sweet.
Thanks!
PLEASE make a Dyneema version! Dan, that would be my dream tent… and I think it could handle ski touring very well. (my Xmid 2 pro is still dreamy, I just don’t like fussing with trecking pole tents in the snow.)
We are hoping to do this.
Why would you want a dyneema version? (Genuine question) Is dyneema stronger than polyester and thus more suitable as a 3 season tent?
Infinity stronger, exponentially lighter and waterproof.
@@durstongear Hurray! If you need someone to test a pilot version in four season PNW weather, coast, mountains, and rainforests Id love to help! Especially if it'll be 4 season.
@@e.k.4508 Mostly because it is lighter. It is more expensive and not longer lasting, but weighs about half so it is an amazing weight.
I'm still using my 20+ year old North Face tent, but when that thing gives up the ghost one day this tent is on the short list. It looks awesome.
the kind of tent that makes me want to go camping
Oh yeah! I love his tents. I am going to buy a dome too.
Thanks for the video with Dan Durston and the X Dome
Looks like a very fair price for such a sweet tent.
Oooh! So excited! I've been looking at freestanding tents, because I can't stand the TarpTent Protrail I have (for various reasons)
Nice :)
Durston is the GOAT -when it comes to backpacking tents - hands down.
Thanks Ken :)

Thanks for the kind words!
- Dan
I think I will wait for the Dome 2. Any indication of what the weight may be, nothing specific. Thanks.
@@idontwantahandle12345 Thanks. It'll be roughly 20% heavier.
@ lovely. That’s not bad! I will have a think. Either way, you have a sale. 👍
I love it!! It’s game change design. I will wait the Dyneema version!
My next tent
This will absolutely be my next tent! I can wait to get my hands on it.
Ordered one the first day they came out, eagerly waiting for the shipping confirmation.
It's definitely cheaper than I was expecting with lots of interesting features. I learned a lot about tents in this video. Thanks.
I love when Durston nerds out on materials..
Love this design, owned XMid 2, get it from retailers, thanks Dan for doing direct selling & no more through retailer, Very Good approach & highly appreciate that, can’t wait for two persons type of this, love from Malaysia, happy backpacking all🤗🫡
Hello, any recommendations for where in Malaysia to buy a LifeStraw Go bottle? I'll be in Penang on Wednesday! Thanks!
OMG! Dan is both a mountain man and a brilliant engineer. What a catch. Yes, I'd marry him. ♥
Looks a great tent! Interested in the 2-Person one next year, think it's straight in the basket!
I don't think this one is for me (happy x-mid 2 owner), but I can't get enough of seeing how Dan innovates whatever product he puts out and at such reasonable prices. Great looking tent, might be taking a hard look at the 2 person version...
You need to make a sleeping pad that fits in that! ❤
Holding off for the upcoming 2+ version, hopefully would fit a couple with small kid.
@@rogerwilco1777 This is Durston's first freestanding tent unless I'm missing something on their website. Actually now I'm wondering if you didn't see the entire comment I wrote and only saw half of it haha.
I watch ur videos from México, my favorite TH-cam channel about camping by far. Thank you Dan !
Ordered an X-Dome right when it came out! So pumped to get it!
Same!
🔥
Ok Dan you’ve done it, can I start a petition to see you test out some big canvas hot tents this winter? Soringbars, bells, walls, etc. or small nylons whatever but, just an idea, have a good one!
Good to hear that comment about europe and how we find it weird/crazy to rig the inner tent and then put on the outer layer. Like going out in rain and put on a rain jacket after 5 minutes. But we probably have different climate in general. Nice and light tent though by the looks of it!
This looks great! Decent pricing great concept and superlight.
durston tents are the goat I dont care what anyone else says
Thanks Evan 🙏
-Dan
Yes..u.k. rains all the time...outer first pls !!! I'll buy one of these! Well done. Sheffield England
Thanks Graham!
Nice..I'm good right now with tents, but if I wasn't this would warrant a very hard consideration.
Love this style of review, tent looks promising too 👍
