root rot is real. Just today, I had found my fairly young thai constellation that I hydro spiked when I went away on vacation had root rot. It looked healthy on top but when I pulled it, 90% of my roots were rotted. Your comment about never hearing of someone killing their monstera by drying out struck a loud chord. Hopefully my thai is not lost. I have it now in a vase of water and hope it pushes new roots. Keep videos like this coming. Thx!
Oh no! I hope you were able to catch it early. For root rot, I cut off all rotted and questionable parts, rinse with a soap solution, then let the roots dry out and callous in air for a day. Then you can recover in moss or water. Best of luck!!
@@alpina4115 this is untrue. If you do exactly as Legends of Monstera said and cut off all the affected roots and then clean the rest of them, you are effectively eradicating the root rot and starting your plant's growth from scratch. As long as your nodes are in tact, it's still has many chances of growing back (in fact, the chances of it growing back is the quantity of the nodes on your plant). This is how propagation works. This is how many collectors get more plants out of just one. Hopefully you never have to propagate out of desperation. If you're lucky you propagate for fun instead of out of fear of losing your plant, but sometimes this happens and you just have to know how to start from scratch.

Really appreciate your advice on monstera and aroids, as well as your videos on root rot and Japanese greenhouse / rare plant collector tours! I’m in Colorado with an Albo that’s been growing and thriving in 10-20% humidity for the last 6 mo. Surprisingly no browning or crisping in lower humidity even though it lives in a terracotta pot. I occasionally run a humidifier so the room it lives in gets to 30-40% about 2-3 days per week. Maybe I should expect the plant to lose more water through transpiration as it’s surface volume increases? Although in that case it’s root system would also be larger and (hopefully) able to compensate. It would be interesting to hear if you’ve noticed the crisping occurs more readily in larger plants. I’ll keep an eye on mine, maybe I’ve just been lucky thus far. Thanks again for your amazing videos!
Thanks Mate I will be going through your videos 😁 when I bought my plant a couple of leaves had brown edges which I’m assuming got burnt from the sun as it was in direct sunlight at the market. Is this an issue?

Love the video 💚. What i found that is working the best for me with my monsteras varigated or not, is semihydroponics. The roots are growing like crazy and the plants is putting out at least one leaf every 2-3 weeks. I 6 week i have to repot my monstera twice because of the roots growth and she got taller as well.
I live in humid New Orleans and the air is unbearable most mornings. So I feel you on not liking to reside in a humid place. It’s like breathing in hot air. Your skin is always sticky too.
Thanks for all your tips. Gonna move my albo a little deeper into my balcony. I live in Singapore and I have high humidity all year long and do have to watch out to make sure soil is dried before watering. High humidity makes the soil stay moist for a longer time. My medium is pumice, soil, perlite and cocochips.
Eurgh, the albo are so fussy. I've got a cutting I'm trying to root and the rot struggle is real. Never had such a fussy cutting as this, would definitely go for a rooted cutting in future. But great video!
Yes. It's definitely one of the divas of the aroid family. It's hard for me to think of a plant that requires so much caution and attention. I'll be doing a video on propagation within the next few months, depending on my work schedule lol. Thanks for watching!!
Hope your cutting is doing well a month on after writing that comment! If you still haven't made significant headway in rooting, you could look into applying heat to the root area. I root cuttings on top of my aquarium lights that run pretty hot. You can also buy seedling mats or reptile heating mats. Hope you don't need it, but handy to root cuttings in general. Good luck!

Stacey, it is... still hanging in there... kind of... I have tried a variety of things, still no roots, but I was able to stop the root rot from spreading. Right now it’s in my “plant hospital” - cloche with orchid mix/spaghnum moss mix, humidifier right next to it, grow light on it since it’s winter, heating pad on and off since it’s near a cold window. 😭 PLEASE LIVE!
I have a soil mix that I use for most of my leafy tropical plants (read: calatheas), so in theory it should be good for a monstera albo but the plant is incredibly expensive so I'm paranoid about it. My mix has calcined clay, pumice, perlite, expanded clay, coconut hussts, pine bark, and cotton compost. Idk what the measurements of it are, but I'm so paranoid that I'm going to kill it lmao
Hi! I just ordered a Thai constellation through mail and it’s coming with the roots in moss. How long should i leave it in the moss before potting it ? Do i put the moss in water or just mist it ? Thanks for the info !
Great video! I just bought my first albo. It’s a juvenile. I put it in a diy terrarium/greenhouse and the humidity gets into the 90’s (up to 99%). It’s in a super airy soil - coco coir, charcoal, perlite. I know you said the higher the humidity the better, but is this too high? Appreciate your input! Thanks!

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah, albo cuttings are tough for sure. I'm going to make an episode about propagating cuttings as well as on dealing with root rot, hopefully sooner than later as my schedule allows. Actually, I can probably do a short one on root rot this week. Give me a few days!
I just bought my first Albo! It’s coming in an unrooted cutting with ridiculously long aerial roots with 5 leaves. Four of the leaves have variegation (not much) and the fifth and newest leaf has none. It was sold as possibly reverting. How do you go about reversing reverting? The seller told me to observe the next two or so leaves, and if they have no variegation to cut the plant back down to when the last Variegated leaf was put out. I can’t wait for it to get here! But the aerial roots are so long I’m going to have a hard time figuring out how to start rooting it 😅 I have a normal Monstera on the opposite wall of an east facing window and is doing great! It’s getting some rays from my grow light I have up for my SOH. I’m going to be moving the normal monstera to another spot and putting the Albo in its place so it gets some grow light rays.
I would give the same advice as your seller. Just gotta wait and cross your fingers, and cut it back to the highest variegated part if it does revert. Light does not affect variegation.

So i got an albo cutting a few months ago, i placed it in my windowless bathroom unser a grow light. Did perfecly fine for a few months. Grew two more leaves one is like 70% white the other one 50% . Now it starte rurning translucent at some Spots and some of it starte turning brown . Its bigging tue hell out of me. Just got a humidity meter to check if its to dry . Maaaan, i eve had a divuser runnig next to it....

I really like your straight-forwardness and I totally agree with you, so I left a subscription. BUT, since a lot people are complaining about how their variageted plants revert back, I want to highlight the fact, that light is one of the fundamental factors to preserve the variagetion. If it stands too dark, it's normal for it to become more green, since the white parts can't absorb light. The intensity of light depends on the place you live, the placement of your room (ground floor, higher floor), the season, the orientation of the window, how far is the plant placed from it, are there curtains... and so on. I just want people to actually think about, why their plants act the way they do.
Thanks for following along. However, that light affects variegation in aroids is a myth. It is not true. Light, high or low, intense or not, does not affect/promote/prevent variegated plants reverting.
I need to do a video to bust this myth but I haven’t gotten to it with the other content coming out. But I’ll try to get one out in Jan or Feb. This is a misconception is keeps getting propagated. Cheers!

It's logical to me, that 'some' variageted plants do have this "survival technique" of turning green due to lack of sunlight, more green=more photosynthesis. I say this, because I experienced it with my 9y old (now almost green) photos, ~4m away from the windows. The cuttings from a broken branch placed on a windowsill, produced new variegated leaves after sh*tloads of time. I'm testing this with a Photos Manjula and a Philodendron Brasil atm, the others are way to expensive to do experiments. 😄 Time will tell... ^^

I just bought a monstera Albo and it seems like what is suggested is to put it in moist moss... but I think the tip of my root (I bough a lead and the one root is about 4 inches long) came rotted. I don't know how many times I've watched this video. Decided to splurge and get an Albo cutting... had planned to root it in the mix you suggested but in a plastic pot only because it's easier for me to judge how dry it is versus a clay pot. How do you handle the roots adhering itself to the clay pot when it comes time for you to repot? I always found that to be a PIA; so I grew my orchids in plastic pots, too. Thanks.
Do you keep your moss pole wet? How do you keep it moist without watering the soil? I made one out of coir and I tend to neglect spraying it with water purely because I’m lazy and it takes a lot of time for it to absorb so I’m standing there spraying and spraying

?? What would make a split leaf philodendron stems to become mushy and then wilt? I checked the plant for root rot and the roots are beautiful. So I repotted and hoping for the best.
Need some help. I bought a thai constellation cutting on ebay in september 2020. One large leaf, good node. It has not grown at all, just sits there. I checked the roots they are not rotted, have it under a grow light but nothing. I let it dry and then water it. I'm in Florida so I recently put it outside in bright shade, some sun. Question: I had a ginny monstera that was doing the same thing, and I stuck it in water for a while and now it has really taken off, Should I do the same with the thai cutting? Thanks, I hope you answer, I've asked other youtubers but they don't respond. I've been in touch with the grower and he's been helpful but doesn't know why it's not growing, he grows them.
Hello! Thank you for this amazing video and all of the others! So, I have a young Monstera Albo Variegata, and I wonder if cocopeat is a good soil for it since you mention it should be and airy type of soil.
I use 1/4 soil, 1/4 perlit, 1/4 orchid mix and 1/4 cocos coir ist that oke? My Thai came with I think a bit root rot on the aerial root and also don’t know what to do because it’s on the stem at the root

Oh, actually if you are having good success with your rooting method, just continue and then move to a well draining mix when you feel it has enough roots 🤗

Tips for reversing dehydration on a cutting? Its arial root was rotted when I recieved it so I had to cut it. It's got a few nodes where new ones will emerge (I've "air layered sphagnum around them and crossed my fingers.) However I've noticed her stem is wrinkling and 2 of 4 leaves are curled a bit...
if indirect light is preferred, what does that mean in the way of growth lights? I live in Minnesota so have to supplement with grow lights in the winter because we don't see the sun for long periods of time.

At first came I put them water over a night and I reported it . But about a 5- a week it seem like not look right then I put them in water ( a lot of roots ) then I reported again in clay ball ( semi- hydro) two days now but the leafs look as long as longer drier and curl. Please help !
Good evening, I just got an albo and is not in the best condition. I got it at a real good price. It does have 2 leaves that don't look so good but there is also a new leaf coming out. I am pretty sure it's only in potting soil. The person I bought it from said don't transplant yet. I am in Florida and we had a lot of rain and looks too wet to me. Do you think I can repot in the new mix or should I wait?
Hi Jimmy! Big fan of your amazing and educational videos. I heard fertilizing variegated monsteras can cause it to revert back to all green. Is that true and do you fertilize? If so what do you use and how often do you fertilize in growing and non-growing season??
Hi. I have not heard of issues with fertilizers reducing variegation from personal experience or any reliable sources. I also don’t recognize any scientific merit to that claim. I do fertilize about once a month or two, but honestly I have no idea if it’s worth doing. A lot of very experienced aroid growers don’t use fertilizers at all, while others swear by it. I personally have not been convinced of its necessity, at least in the aroid world. I think a lot of fertilizer practices are extrapolated from other plants, vegetables, and fruit trees, where fertilizers have shown benefit.
Hi Doc. Need your advise. I accidentally left my monstera inside my car. When i returned to my parking area, the plant is already sun burned. :( What to do now? I let them cool down. Didnt touch them for a week. I want to repot them to see the status of their roots. Help.

I dont want to use an humidifier for may monstera variegata. Would it be enough if I just spray the plant (leaves and moss pole) with destilled water every day? the humidity level in my home is around 50%. If I spray around the plant, the humidity climbs up to 61%
I bought a cutting that was rotting at the bottom, I monitored if for the past month, moved it from sphagnum to water and it decided to finally start growing its aerial roots but one of the leaves died off so cut the rotted stem off, waxed the bottom and is now in a vase with sphagnum moss. wish me luck :/
I'm jealous of your Monstera Albo. Mine is reverting back to green leaves. I've had 4 leaves that came out just green. How do I revert it back or can I still revert it back to get the white variegation again?
It might need more light (no direct sunlight). Only the green parts are able to absorb light, so if it's placed too dark, it produces more chlorophyll.

Eurgh, the albo are so fussy. I've got a cutting I'm trying to root and the rot struggle is real. Never had such a fussy cutting as this, would definitely go for a rooted cutting in future. But great video!

Hope your cutting is doing well a month on after writing that comment! If you still haven't made significant headway in rooting, you could look into applying heat to the root area. I root cuttings on top of my aquarium lights that run pretty hot. You can also buy seedling mats or reptile heating mats. Hope you don't need it, but handy to root cuttings in general. Good luck!

Stacey, it is... still hanging in there... kind of... I have tried a variety of things, still no roots, but I was able to stop the root rot from spreading. Right now it’s in my “plant hospital” - cloche with orchid mix/spaghnum moss mix, humidifier right next to it, grow light on it since it’s winter, heating pad on and off since it’s near a cold window. 😭 PLEASE LIVE!

I have a soil mix that I use for most of my leafy tropical plants (read: calatheas), so in theory it should be good for a monstera albo but the plant is incredibly expensive so I'm paranoid about it. My mix has calcined clay, pumice, perlite, expanded clay, coconut hussts, pine bark, and cotton compost. Idk what the measurements of it are, but I'm so paranoid that I'm going to kill it lmao
Hi! I just ordered a Thai constellation through mail and it’s coming with the roots in moss. How long should i leave it in the moss before potting it ? Do i put the moss in water or just mist it ? Thanks for the info !
Most plants are shipped in moss because it's lighter than soil and also helps preserve the roots. You can just pot it =)

Great video! I just bought my first albo. It’s a juvenile. I put it in a diy terrarium/greenhouse and the humidity gets into the 90’s (up to 99%). It’s in a super airy soil - coco coir, charcoal, perlite. I know you said the higher the humidity the better, but is this too high? Appreciate your input! Thanks!

I just bought my first Albo! It’s coming in an unrooted cutting with ridiculously long aerial roots with 5 leaves. Four of the leaves have variegation (not much) and the fifth and newest leaf has none. It was sold as possibly reverting. How do you go about reversing reverting? The seller told me to observe the next two or so leaves, and if they have no variegation to cut the plant back down to when the last Variegated leaf was put out. I can’t wait for it to get here! But the aerial roots are so long I’m going to have a hard time figuring out how to start rooting it 😅 I have a normal Monstera on the opposite wall of an east facing window and is doing great! It’s getting some rays from my grow light I have up for my SOH. I’m going to be moving the normal monstera to another spot and putting the Albo in its place so it gets some grow light rays.
I would give the same advice as your seller. Just gotta wait and cross your fingers, and cut it back to the highest variegated part if it does revert. Light does not affect variegation.

So i got an albo cutting a few months ago, i placed it in my windowless bathroom unser a grow light. Did perfecly fine for a few months.
Grew two more leaves one is like 70% white the other one 50% . Now it starte rurning translucent at some Spots and some of it starte turning brown . Its bigging tue hell out of me.
Just got a humidity meter to check if its to dry .

I really like your straight-forwardness and I totally agree with you, so I left a subscription. BUT, since a lot people are complaining about how their variageted plants revert back, I want to highlight the fact, that light is one of the fundamental factors to preserve the variagetion. If it stands too dark, it's normal for it to become more green, since the white parts can't absorb light.
The intensity of light depends on the place you live, the placement of your room (ground floor, higher floor), the season, the orientation of the window, how far is the plant placed from it, are there curtains... and so on.
I just want people to actually think about, why their plants act the way they do.
Thanks for following along. However, that light affects variegation in aroids is a myth. It is not true. Light, high or low, intense or not, does not affect/promote/prevent variegated plants reverting.

It's logical to me, that 'some' variageted plants do have this "survival technique" of turning green due to lack of sunlight, more green=more photosynthesis.
I say this, because I experienced it with my 9y old (now almost green) photos, ~4m away from the windows. The cuttings from a broken branch placed on a windowsill, produced new variegated leaves after sh*tloads of time.
I'm testing this with a Photos Manjula and a Philodendron Brasil atm, the others are way to expensive to do experiments. 😄 Time will tell... ^^

I just bought a monstera Albo and it seems like what is suggested is to put it in moist moss... but I think the tip of my root (I bough a lead and the one root is about 4 inches long) came rotted. I don't know how many times I've watched this video. Decided to splurge and get an Albo cutting... had planned to root it in the mix you suggested but in a plastic pot only because it's easier for me to judge how dry it is versus a clay pot. How do you handle the roots adhering itself to the clay pot when it comes time for you to repot? I always found that to be a PIA; so I grew my orchids in plastic pots, too. Thanks.
You would likely have to soak and break the clay pot 😅.

Do you keep your moss pole wet? How do you keep it moist without watering the soil? I made one out of coir and I tend to neglect spraying it with water purely because I’m lazy and it takes a lot of time for it to absorb so I’m standing there spraying and spraying
No, I let it dry out. The moss just lets the roots attach faster and also allows the plant to be more easily removed. No need to keep it moist.

?? What would make a split leaf philodendron stems to become mushy and then wilt? I checked the plant for root rot and the roots are beautiful. So I repotted and hoping for the best.

Need some help. I bought a thai constellation cutting on ebay in september 2020. One large leaf, good node. It has not grown at all, just sits there. I checked the roots they are not rotted, have it under a grow light but nothing. I let it dry and then water it. I'm in Florida so I recently put it outside in bright shade, some sun. Question: I had a ginny monstera that was doing the same thing, and I stuck it in water for a while and now it has really taken off, Should I do the same with the thai cutting? I use 1/4 soil, 1/4 perlit, 1/4 orchid mix and 1/4 cocos coir ist that oke? My Thai came with I think a bit root rot on the aerial root and also don’t know what to do because it’s on the stem at the root

Tips for reversing dehydration on a cutting? Its arial root was rotted when I recieved it so I had to cut it. It's got a few nodes where new ones will emerge (I've "air layered sphagnum around them and crossed my fingers.)
However I've noticed her stem is wrinkling and 2 of 4 leaves are curled a bit...
I don't think I would do anything extra to address "dehydration" specifically. Some leaf loss is expected when rerooting a cutting.

if indirect light is preferred, what does that mean in the way of growth lights? I live in Minnesota so have to supplement with grow lights in the winter because we don't see the sun for long periods of time.

Hi Jimmy , nine to meet you here . Hey , I just got my monsters variegation albo. That for whole plant 2 feet tall with two plants 11 leaves . At first came I put them water over a night and I reported it . But about a 5- a week it seem like not look right then I put them in water ( a lot of roots ) then I reported again in clay ball ( semi- hydro) two days now but the leafs look as long as longer drier and curl. Please help !
Good evening, I just got an albo and is not in the best condition. I got it at a real good price. It does have 2 leaves that don't look so good but there is also a new leaf coming out. I am pretty sure it's only in potting soil. The person I bought it from said don't transplant yet. I am in Florida and we had a lot of rain and looks too wet to me. Do you think I can repot in the new mix or should I wait?

Hi Jimmy! Big fan of your amazing and educational videos. I heard fertilizing variegated monsteras can cause it to revert back to all green. Is that true and do you fertilize? If so what do you use and how often do you fertilize in growing and non-growing season??
Hi. I have not heard of issues with fertilizers reducing variegation from personal experience or any reliable sources. I also don’t recognize any scientific merit to that claim. I do fertilize about once a month or two, but honestly I have no idea if it’s worth doing. A lot of very experienced aroid growers don’t use fertilizers at all, while others swear by it. I personally have not been convinced of its necessity, at least in the aroid world. I think a lot of fertilizer practices are extrapolated from other plants, vegetables, and fruit trees, where fertilizers have shown benefit.
I do have a fertilizer video that may be thought provoking for you.

i live in Western Australia so I assume hot climate? I've been given the plant in a plastic pot, the lady i brought it from lives 20 min away so would that be the best to keep it in? its 3 years old thai constellation, so an established plant but it needs a repotting soon and its coming up to winter, i just brought it.... and i really don't want it to die

I dont want to use an humidifier for may monstera variegata. Would it be enough if I just spray the plant (leaves and moss pole) with destilled water every day? the humidity level in my home is around 50%. If I spray around the plant, the humidity climbs up to 61%

I bought a cutting that was rotting at the bottom, I monitored if for the past month, moved it from sphagnum to water and it decided to finally start growing its aerial roots but one of the leaves died off so cut the rotted stem off, waxed the bottom and is now in a vase with sphagnum moss. wish me luck :/
Good luck man! Yeah usually it’s a step or two back before going forward when it comes to root rot. Happens to the best of us and sucks every time.

There's very little you can do except cutting it back to the areas where the stems were well variegated.
I just cut the stems where the green leaves started to revert back. Hope it works. Thanks 🤗
It might need more light (no direct sunlight). Only the green parts are able to absorb light, so if it's placed too dark, it produces more chlorophyll.

I did cut them off but I don't do that anymore. I just let the leaves be these days. It looks weirder with the cut off parts lol
