    *Soil mix:* Most tropical rainforest plants will benefit from a small portion of Activated Charcoal mixed in.
    It acts against harmful bacteria and moderates changes in the soil chemistry. Any sort of forest goes thru burn events at times, so this also mimics a feature of the rainforest environment: there is always some charcoal in that soil.

    I want to take the time today to thank you for your videos, Kaylee! You were the one that got me into plants. Before, I thought that I could not have plants, because a) I always kill them (by overwatering, I even killed a Zamioculca in the past!), and b) my house is too dark. By buying this moisture probe that you always recommend, I felt more confident that I could do it. I also realized that I do have quite some spots in my house which are not too dark. Now, I have something around 50 plants, and they are all happy and thriving. And this makes me happy. Thanks a million!

  • @paulabollers6396

    After awhile, I recommend double checking your moisture meters or getting a good quality one. Mine was giving me wacky readings (i.e. saying it was dry when it was wet). Also clean the rods with alcohol between use so you get accurate readings and don't transfer anything funky to other plants.

    • @illumlife588
      @illumlife588 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Paula!!! Love this:)) I have seen some comments saying that they don't like other videos about using the finger method, but I don't use a moisture probe and wait for my Phils to just about dry out (when the pot feels very light) I do so much by feeling do to the fact I'm partially blind and ALL my philodendrons look beautiful, but if I was to purchase one I will use your method...I have a hard time trusting gadgets :))
      Emily

    • @paulabollers6396
      @paulabollers6396 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@illumlife588 Hi Emily! Nice to see you here! Yes, I notice first that my moisture probe was taking a long time to register the moisture level. I would have to put it in and then come back. Eventually, it was totally wrong. Like Kaylee Ellen mentioned in the video, I noticed that giving a plant a soaking til water came out the bottom did not always suit the plants. My Ficus Audrey will drop leaves if I do that. I also like how she mentioned roots don't always go through the bottom hole if a plant is root bound. I would say caring for plants in our unique environments is experiential and instinctual. You learn by overwatering and getting fungus gnats like I did or just by knowing what your plants need based on the type of light they get, pot they are in and if all else fails testing the soil by hand will do the trick!

    Regarding fertilizing, if you repotted, wait 4-6 months before adding any. Most soils have lots of nutrition and some even have fertilizer in them so extra can burn the roots. I put a note in my planner when I repot so I know when I can fertilize 😊

  • @HerebutNot

    Moist moist moist 😂😂 - great video. Appreciate your talks, as always.
    I’m curious, you’ve noted that your philodendron’s sulk when you flush water through the pot...do you think that’s a function of the potting media maybe not being airy enough for the plant type? Like maybe adding a bit more perlite would help prevent too much wetness?
    The function of flushing water through the pot has a lot of advantages like removing salt and toxin buildup from the root area, so I have a personal affinity for that method of watering because my tap water is high in minerals (250ppm). I only have a Philodendron melanochrysum and Choco Red, but they seem to be okay with the weekly drench. I use orchid bark, perlite and charcoal at about 70% and the remainder is peatmoss.

    I have a Pink Princess, it's my first philodendron and it's beautiful and healthy- but it's getting leggy. I'll be moving to a better place in the next month, but it hasn't been getting a lot of light or humidity where I am right now and it's been turning out smaller and smaller leaves and less verigation. I'd like to remove the small leaves, since they aren't very nice looking and it would probably be good for the plant to be pruned at this point. However it's also growing on a single vine, so I'm afraid to prune it since I don't know where I can prune it to encourage new growth. Maybe it's unrealistic but I'm afraid it'll just stop growing if I do it wrong. Do you have any tips for that?
    I'll also be moving all of my plants from north facing windows to north/east facing windows when I move, so I'll be getting morning sun. Do you have tips for acclimating my plants so they don't burn? I accidentally burned my Monstera trying to acclimate it to morning sun from ambient day light before, and lost a lot of its large growth, so I'm very nervous.

    I have the same moisture meter and have had some issues with hugely inaccurate readings for some soils. This caused me to almost kill a couple of plants because it was reading much higher than the soil actually was. Because they use electrical condictivity to measure moisture, soil v content can affect them so use with caution!

    More plants die from overwatering than from under watering. There is no easy trick....I don’t bother with the gadgets. I check my plants frequently. If I stick my fingers into the soil and feel any moisture at all, I don’t water, and check again in a day or two. Checking regularly is key. I can tell by lifting the pot and feeling the weight, too. If you don’t like plants enough to bother with doing all this, then stick with snake plants and golden pothos

    Philodendron are fairly overwater friendly I have found so great for people who are just getting started and are too scared to let the plant soil go bone dry between watering! The key though is clay pots, in which water evaporates much faster

    Ok I do use the meter…but also the meter shows different readings based on how deep I push it in and almost always with most plants it will show atleast a 5-6 when fully inserted. Any tips on the depth to slide it to…?

    I'm surprised! I didn't go through all the comments, I mean there's over 300 of them but I was surprised to see that no one commented on your new then unicorn at the time not so much anymore that you explained in a future video. It was sitting in a glass right next to you the whole video! I was wondering why there was var. Adansonii.

    Thank you so much for doing this video! Philodendrons are hands down my favourite kinds of plants because they come in so many different shapes and forms! I bought a hygrometer after watching your calathea video, and it's made such a difference - apparently I can tolerate much lower humidity than tropical plants can :D
    How do you maintain high humidity in the winter without developing mold issues? I get lots of condensation on my windowsills, and just wiping away residual moisture isn't enough.

    The moisture probe is not reliable on chunky mix. You would be better off getting one that measures moisture for orchids. It gives a much better reading.

    I ordered a philodendrom verrucosum online and it arrived with one leaf crushed and two drooping. What tips do you have for helping it perk up. The humidity in my home is 41.

    I LOVE that you gave me a number for my water meter to get to before watering. It is so much easier for me to stick the probe in and see that it is at a 3 than sticking my finger in and trying to decide if I feel moisture.
