    Knoppers are a favorite of mine from Aldi here in the US. Braunschweiger (I think it's pork liver sausage) was a favorite spread when I was growing up -- I don't think it's very healthy - but very good.

    I and my wife lived in the Frankfurt am main area for 6 years. (Rhine Main afb) we were married in Waldorf at city hall. We both miss our walks along the River near the Romer Platz and shopping in the shops around the Romer. (including a Ice cream shop just down the street, ) Both of us do dearly miss the Good friends and foods we shared at get togethers both on base and in the surrounding towns (Rodgau, Nieder Roden) we lived in Nieder Roden and iI always shopped at the Toom Market before going home after work to get the days foods. I Miss Germany and the wonderful people that became friends, Germany will always have a place in our Heart .

    I see chocolates and liquors. I have bought from Germany chocolates, Trumpf Edle Tropfen In Nuss Klassische Brände which I love but have once a year. I also as a young man that drank often come to love Rumple Minz but not many these days drink it. I'll drink it straight once in awhile but my favorite is to put a little on a dish of chocolate ice cream. Yum.

    I would enjoy a feature along the theme of "cooking with mustard in Germany". Here mustard is largely relegated to hot dogs and hamburgers. However, I know rhat in Europe musterd is used with much more imagination. At a London hotel carvery, the waiter askd me "what kind of mustard" I wanted with my roast beef. In Copenhaven I had a mustard butter sauce on my roast beef. (I have done this at home many tmes since!) My Mother pickled green beens wih mustard. And baked ham was always coated with it. I have seen coarse ground "Bavarian" mustard with spces. There must be all sorts of good things that many of us have never heard of! Thanks.

    That was interesting. I remember when I went to the village supermarket in the small village my husband came from. I used my very bad German and every time someone would say to me Oh, you must be Frau Stuetzle....I am.... would you like to come over and have coffee with me? My husband said to me...I was born here and went to school here and lived here until I came to Australia and you are here for a few weeks and have met more people than I have!! Takes a supermarket to find friends in.. and besides I was a novelty and people were curious about the Aussie Wolfgang brought back. Those foods looked delicious. I loved the onion rolls.

    • @cooking-the-world
      @cooking-the-world  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Korina, thanks for watching! Edeka and Rewe are the biggest supermarket chains here in Germany. Good thing about Rewe is that they have more smaller stores in the cities so everybody can do the grocery shopping there. Those concentrate on selling branded products. Netto, Aldi and Lidl are discount supermarkets. There you can find more no-name products. Netto belongs to Edeka from what I know. All of those offer regional and organic food which is great! And I don’t remember if I have been to Kaufmann before;) It’s not in our area!

    Just wondering: what is the difference between Hessian "Spundekäse" and Bavarian "Obatzter"?

    • @cooking-the-world
      @cooking-the-world  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference are the ingredients. The not important one is that Spundekäse doesn’t have raw onions and Camembert. I made a video about how to prepare those two (and two more), have a look of you like.

    What happened to the Hessian Specialty of Apple Wines, either sweet or dry? Otherwise a good showing of amazing selections. For me though, I most often go to the smaller family operated stores for my food items. Thereby, avoiding that "Grocery Store Syndrome" of hurrying up to put my foods on the conveyor and going to the other side of the cashier and packing my food into the grocery bags, I needed to bring along and then having my payment ready, all with the squinty-eyed cashier communicating to me, to move faster. I never liked that experience.

    • @cooking-the-world
      @cooking-the-world  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re right I should have mentioned apple wine. I completely forgot about that’s probably because we always get our one in apple wine taverns, not supermarkets.

    • @philipohmes9395
      @philipohmes9395 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cooking-the-world It was just that the last time I was in Offenbach staying at a hotel, I asked the Bartender which Apple Wines were available for tasting and drinking and there were only two of them. I tried both and liked them. However, my memories of having lived in Frankfurt am Main years earlier, there were many varieties available in the neighborhood wine shop. Now that I am living in North America it becomes more difficult to find this treat and the same is true of Franconian Wines. Not only re they good for sipping, but also for marinating pork. It is not the same beverage as Apple Cider, which is found frequently this time of year in North America. My last resort is to find Organic labeled Apple Juice and ferment it to make Apple Wine and then wait a year to drink it.

    • @cooking-the-world
      @cooking-the-world  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philipohmes9395 oh my am glad you have such good memories with our Äppler ;) I thought that most of the ciders you can find abroad are sparkling and with extra sugar, so not as nice as ours. Some of supermarkets like Edeka and Teegut offer even apple wines from smaller apple wine taverns from Frankfurt, not only Possmann which is great!

    Those fresh noodles and dumplings look pretty good. Didn't have them when I lived in Germany. Also, don't have them here in the US. Only one Italian sells tortellini here. Sadly, I can get most all deli meats at my local German store...except coarse leberkase and good rindswurst. I don't know what it is with US/Canadian butchers. If you search long enough, you can find a halfway decent Frankfurter or bratwurst (just not at any supermarket), but when it comes to rindswurst they all fall flat on their faces...even the artisan butchers. (And as you said, rindswurst is a German staple for most people. I miss them.)

    • @cooking-the-world
      @cooking-the-world  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh i am sorry to hear that. As far as I can remember the Rindswurst recipe was developed because of the growing Jewish population here in Frankfurt. I am sure that in US would be a market for that!

    • @beckysimeone4882
      @beckysimeone4882 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would think that, but here in St Louis Missouri, which has a large quantity of German and Jewish people, I have never found a decent German restaurant or butcher shops with true German sausages. I do think our sausages in US are very tasty, though.

    • @michaelwittkopp3379
      @michaelwittkopp3379 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, haven't found out why, but you rarely can find imported meats. I order some online, but only one (bauernspeck) is an import from Austria. I have not found a single European seller of anything else (unless canned). My supplies (and those of my local German store) mostly come from Canada. My Franfurters come from Michigan. None of my suppliers will ship other cooked deli meats...even in bulk. (So, there might be people making good rindswurst. You just have to be local to buy.) Quality-wise, only deli meats worth buying from supermarkets are like pastrami and roast beef or turkey. Their salami is terrible. Even cooked ham isn't nearly as good unless you get from that one famous producer, who makes Virginia ham & bacon the old fashion way. (And, I've only found them in one store chain, and only around Christmas and Easter.) American hot dogs have lost in quality hugely since I was a child. Regular brands just aren't worth the money anymore. Bratwurst (in supermarkets) have a funny story behind them. That well-known producer was legally required by court to no longer advertise their "bratwursts" as "bratwursts". They now call them simply brats. (They use the same breakfast sausage mix that they do in all their products. Aka, their brats are just big breakfast sausages.)
