Interesting as ever. There are a lot of similarities to my own XP build, but I figured I would highlight some differences. I use the same processor, but with DDR3 memory clocked at 1600MHz and the FSB at 400MHz. This allows the 8600 to run at a seady 4.0GHz and then I used the maximum officially sanctioned voltage for the CPU. I do use 8GB of RAM and then use the excess for a drive buffer. Finally I have a GTX 285. I will be looking at some of the games you used on my test system as I believe this will actually not have any compatibility issues but a lot more performance.

You can easily use higher end GPUs. Windows XP driver available for up to Nvidia 9xx series GPUs for example. 4GB RAM is also supported by Windows XP so could run dual channel 2x2GB. Not sure why use that overkill cooler on a 65w processor which could be upgrade to quad core even an xeon or 771 processor with socket mod. Windows XP itself can run up till 1155 socket platform for even more performance options.

I've got an XP retro system with an i5-4590, GT 1030, and 4GB of RAM with an SSD and it's hilariously fast for WinXP stuff but I find myself using my Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 machines with period-correct Radeon 9800 Pro and GeForce 9800 GTX cards for the proper nostalgic rush--there are very few older games I want to play again which don't run on my 11700K and RTX 3080 either natively through Windows or with a GoG copy so it's really just for the flash to the past.

I bought 10x Pentiums E5800's (C2D) on fleebay. I've put them all on my ASRock 4CoreDual-Sata2, and 4 of them could run 4.5GHz with bsel mod for voltage and FSB.
I think it's way better processor due to raw speed it can run at with x16 multiplayer (every motherboard can do 280-290MHz FSB), and 2MB of cache this Pentium has it's perfect for XP era.
I have one E5800 clocked at 4.5GHz in setup with Abit Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLi + 6GB of Geil DDR2 Black Dragon + 2x Gainward 9600GT (main Win XP rig). Generally if you keep voltage around 1.45V and temps in check (around 70* max) with these C2D chips, you will be completely fine, and they will work for years to come. Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLi on the other hand no problems what so ever, but to work with 45nm CPU's it need latest bios for that board (beta / bios id:18). As a side note it took me a bit to find it on the web, because official Abit website has only dead links, and on top of that it ends on bios id:16 which despite description won't work with e5800. With plenty of air flow VRM on this motherboard should be ok. On the other hand and same breath avoid F-190HD like a plague.

Hmmm, I think the issues that you've had in those games were related to the drivers.
For my XP system I'm using a Radeon HD 6850 (more like a Windows Vista/7 card) and I've played Half Life 1, NFS MW, Doom 3 and no issues at all. I might try NFS U2 to see what happens.
Another interesting thing, about what you've said at the beggining of the video, is related to Quake 4 and Doom 3.
On a RX 580 Doom3 (the vanilla edition) worked perfectly, but Quake 4 (the Steam version) had to be adjusted from the INI files. Now, on a RX 6650XT Quake4 plays like sh@t.
I will let you know in a few weeks/month if I also have issues with an overkill XP system, as I've just received an I5-4460 with which I also intend to pair a powerfull videocard.
Until then, If you are kind enough, please write me a list of the games you had issues with. I might try them on the Radeon HD6850.

Finally I know what is causing that texture bug in Quake 4, thanks for info. 😀
I have Q9550+GTX275 for top Win XP gaming, now I am testing GTX460 which still has drivers for XP. Some games from like 1999-2001 were already corrupt on P4 era computers and drivers, so it's wasting of time to trying to make it work on some top Win XP computer, you just need different computer for such games. I found out that Win 2000 has much better compatibility with late Win 9x games than XP, so I am using Win 2000 for games like AvP1, NFS5 etc...these games are really hard to make it work.
I would definitely stay with HW from preUEFI era, later UEFI MBs already have a lot of problems with XP. P35 is pretty good chipset, I had MSI P35 Platinum Combo, unfortunately few ram slots were damaged and I finished it completely while trying to solder new slots. Now I have some ordinary cheap P43 chipset MB from Asus and it works totaly fine.
I really don't recommend combination of socket 775 and DDR3 rams, there was a lot of problems with stability and you won't even notice any improvement in performance with DDR3, but if you really want DDR3, I recommend to find some old ones with no XMP profiles, it should have standard 1333 MHz, standard CL and standard voltage, NO XMP profiles, these parameters must be native, that's only way how to be sure it's gonna be stable with DDR3.
I also have C2D E8600 (or 8500, I am not sure now) but some very late Win XP games already can benefit from 4 cores. When I overclock Q9550 to 3.3 GHz or more, it has the same single and dual thread performance as top dual core, so why not use quad core when I can.

      Core2 is inevitable :)
Your 8800 GT is around 50% faster than the 7900 GTX, if I'm not mistaken, the 8000 series was a huge leap forward.
But do you know why I prefer the 7000 series?
Because the 8000 series had unified shaders, and I'm stuck in 2005, when people were debating 32 unified shaders vs 32 pixel shaders!
