  • Let's build MY ultimate Windows XP gaming PC. This machine, built with parts from the late 00s, would've cost $ 3,235, by today's figures, if all the parts were bought when they were release.
Oh, and we have to play games. Because games.

Just found this video while looking around at machines similar in spec to what I'm building and I gotta say, yours came out great. I was given an xps 720 with almost all of the bells and whistles and I've been working my way through restoring it. Really fun era of hardware to work on :)

I've recently built my Windows XP machine.
CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition
    Mobo: Asrock N68C-GS FX
    Memory: 2x2GB DDR2 800 Dual Channel
GPU: Palit Geforce GTX 750TI 2GB
    PSU: FSP HYPER-K HP600S
    SSD: Gigabyte 120GB
    HDD: WD 1TB Blue
ODD: 16x Black DVDROM (Planning to add DVDRW)
Case: My old Fractal Design Arc Mini R2
Monitor: Dell Square 19inches Monitor 1280x1024
Building a Windows XP PC is so satisfying and for me playing Windows XP games on a square type monitor is better than the modern wide screen monitor.

Awesome! Love this era, I've got 2 XP machines, one a bit older based around a Gallatin Pentium 4 extreme edition and one very similar to this. Here are the specs:
    Q9650
    Asus Maximus II Formula (P45)
    2x2GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066mhz RAM
    BFG GTX285
    Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite pro
    Corsair HX750w PSU
    Corsair Carbide 300r windowed case
I had lots of 775 motherboards back in the day. I really wanted SLi like you so I had a 780i based Asus Striker II formula which was such a disappointment that I swapped it for an Asus Rampage II formula which was probably the best motherboard I ever owned. I still have it but I never got a chance to try out the P45 chipset so thought I'd give the Maximus II formula a go.

If I was the T-1000 from Terminator 2, I would approach you and say, "Say, that's a nice setup." But really, that is a pretty darn good setup. I have two Windows XP systems. One has an Athlon 64 4000+ with 2 GB of memory, and the graphics adapter is a Ati Sapphire X1950 GT AGP 8x. That setup isn't too fast as games around 2005 and beyond, the PC is a bit too slow. My second Windows XP system has an AMD FX 4200 CPU with 4 GB of memory, as well as an AMD HD 6870 Graphics adapter. It's nice and fast, but the compatibility for older games isn't very good. I want to build something in the middle. I want to see, sometime this fall, about building a Core 2 Duo PC with a relatively fast CPU, with 4 GB of memory, and a Geforce 8800 GTX graphics adapter. I had a very similar setup back at 2007, but with a mid to high range Core 2 Duo and 2 GB of memory. I didn't play too much on it, because I was more into the Xbox 360. My ideal Windows XP system is to have perfect compatibility from 1999 to 2007. Any later than that, I play those games on my Windows 7 PC.

Watched your xfi card video before and at a glance, thought you were using the GTX 260 or 280 in SLI, I had the BFG 8800 GTS back in the day to, I’d waited nearly 2 years for the 8800 GTX to come down in price so bought one, a week later the 8800 GTS 512 was released and I was very sad I’d bought the 8800 GTX as it was slightly faster and cheaper even though it had less vram. I was very naughty and bent a pin on the cooling fan plug so it didn’t work and took the card back for a refund, promptly bought the GTS lol also had a 9800 x2 and 280 I sold very cheap on a car boot which I’m still kicking my self for to this day.

I really don't recommend nvidia chipset, I had always just problems with them, like not recognizing some graphic cards for no reason, lower performance than with intel chipset, really high temperature of north bridge. But nvidia chipset is a cool retro I guess. 😀
I have E8600 (I have even Q9550, I am still not sure if quad core makes sense for XP gaming) and GTX 275 for ultimate Win XP gaming, I also have GTX 460, but raw performance is the same, but maybe I will let it there to have DX11 support in Win 7 on second HDD.
Such computer is perfect for playing games like FarCry, FEAR, Quake 4 on ultra.
I had several MBs there, even some very fancy Asus Striker II (nvidia chipset), but it had -15% performance than the cheapest ordinary MBs, my old beloved P35 platinum combo unfortunately already died, that was really good MB and I also sold my old MSI with P45 chipset, that was mistake 10 yearsa go. I loved MSI back in the day, they had real copper coolers (not fake copper color paint like Asus) and their BIOSes were much better, it was showing real CPU and ram frequency which made overclocking really easy, while with some Asus or others, you still had to use calculator while changing FSB, which is ridiculous.
Now I have some Asus with P43 chipset, it's very basic ordinary MB from that time, but it's reliable and performance is good, so it's ok I guess.
I think I will put that Q9550 there to have even some Win 7 gaming possibility, because I am afraid that it will not take a long time and some games from that period of time will have compatibility issues and also, I prefer to play GOG versions with no DRM and no internet connection on gaming PC at all. When you have gaming only PC and you have some problem, you can just reinstall it in one day which I like. Try to reinstall your main PC with Win 10/11, that will take weeks to set and install everything you had there back.
I still have my 2014 Haswell build (except R9 380, I already sold it), I am using it as movie computer now, but I think it will be good for gaming once again after some time.
PS: Don't use DDR3 with socket 775, it's not reliable, OC will be very limited and you need old RAMs with no XMP profiles to make it really stable. I still keep my old Patriot memories which had all parameters natively, not thru some XMP profile.
