40 years of TMNT that doc should have been funded by Paramount who owns TMNT now. This is history and Paramount should have done more to back this project.
They keep looking for that big budget home run show on Paramount+ and striking out when they could be backing lots of smaller projects with consistent audiences. Maybe after all their failures, they’ll learn something, but probably not.
This video is spectacular, it dates so wonderfully. I hope that sculptor can also make the other Punk frogs Rasptin and Atila, they would all be with those! because he sculpted Genghis and Napoleon. How great Kevin and Peter look in vintage playmate size, they could also make Granitor and those new characters look spectacular, even Snailcool could do it, greetings 👏🏻🇦🇷
Peter Laird has always been in it for the artistic vision first. It's nice to know he's always been like that from this footage. It's a nice reflection of his work on turtles later down the road before Paramount bought the farm.
One thing that's been omitted lately, is that the original colors for mikey and donnie were switched. Don would've had the skin color and mask color as the original mikey figure. And mikey vice versa.
I find it interesting how in those initial talks they're mentioning Leonardo being the one in red, but it makes sense. The original turtles all wear red, so it stands to reason that the leader would be the one to retain the color that all of them wore. But I also get why in the final version of the toyline it ended up being Raphael that kept the red, as red is a color associated with anger and hot bloodedness. Though ironically, this was an aspect of his personality that didn't make it into the 80s cartoon.
@@jalengatton Wha? I think with the sprue thing they were talking about the vehicles being model kits and the parts being on sprue. GI Joe wouldn't have the weapons on the sprue until the early 90's and this interview was sometime around '87.
I love how they strategize on how each Turtles should be their own unique color. Seeing that just made history for what made the Turtles special today.

GIJOE vehicles had sprues for parts, not the figures until like 1992 or 1993. They were what they were mentioning being like model kits. This would have been 1987 or something, right?

We also kept on shooting from the day we delivered the doc to paramount. Including the ACTUAL first reunion of kevin and Pete. Years before the other fake doc reunion.
Interesting that they blamed the fall of MOTU on fantasy going out of fashion. Based on... a couple of fantasy lines ended? Most lines end eventually, and correlation does not imply causation. Of course marketing is more art than science and they probably weren't aware of Mattel's over-shipping issue that really ended the line. Anyway, fascinating stuff Dan! I wish there were archival videos like this for the origins of MOTU :)

Disney need to take on board some of this info for how they've handled Star Wars and Marvel over the last 5 years or more. Kids want characters that stand out from each other and look cool. Not all in similar looking outfits or middle aged women in brown.
In a way, Playmates got their wish in the villains all being human. Other than Krang (who was in a humanoid android body), Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady & Baxter Stockman were all human (originally, at least).
As someone who has been sitting in some pitch meetings in the entertainment industry, I can at least confirm that nothing about the format of these discussions has changed. The distributor is only interested in cash - and the people who pitch just want to create something cool.
What?! Thank you for this, I’ve had my eye on this kickstarter but it’s SOOO expensive for the package with all this content. And I thought Kevin Hated bebop, but he basically created him?? What’s the story there?
I don’t think the Joes weapons came on a sprue until the early 90s, this would predate it. Perhaps they meant the vehicles being in sprues and having to be assembled? Or did I miss something?
I think from a storytelling perspective it is impossible to come back from silly, fantastic, unrealistic to realistic and grounded. Conversly it is possible to add fantastic, silly elements to a grounded series in order to extend its shelf life. As such starting grounded is key to both understanding the market and leaving room to grow in as needed.
