  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter changed everything for theme parks. But just a few years earlier Disney was one cheque away from having Harry all to themselves.

Avengers Campus is pretty much what Disney would've done with Potter if they had gotten the rights to it: One Interactive Family Screen ride, one restaurant, one shop and a meet n greet location. Nothing huge or impressive like what you see today at Universal.

@@timothybernardi68 Its hard to know which way they would've taken it. At least at the time though, I'd have to lean towards being like avengers campus. Feels like SWGE was specifically meant to compete with Universal and the time scale fits for it to be a reaction to Universal's Diagon Alley.
Hell, their mistakes with Harry Potter are probably what lead to the Disney we have today. Caring more about massive IPs than anything else by trying to make big franchises out of Marvel and Star Wars right out of the gate. Disney has owned Marvel and the MCU almost as long as it has the latter has existed, and this was towards the peak of Harry Potter's popularity.

The walking queues of hogwarts to higrids, and through gringotts is a mind blowing experience on its own. Now we’re getting the ministry of magic at epic universe, squeezing 3 huge lands out of the legendary IP. Knowing how Disney planned on ruining what is the greatest theme park IP, with a teacup ride and a petting zoo just shows how incompetent their leadership is.

Disney may be well established, but they have a terrible layout. They have too few attractions for proper people distribution, so they end up with huge bottlenecks and crazy wait times. The key to a good theme park experience is pacing, the faster the turnaround, the better the experience. People never complain about an experience being too short, if they get to do all or pretty much all the stuff they intended. However, people do feel cheated if they spend most of their day stuck in line up and don’t see a quarter of what they intended. It’s a good thing Universal got Harry Potter, because they know how to keep close to the source material and they provide a better experience overall.

One interesting fact: Diagon Alley, historically, exists in real life. It is not 100% made up but is based on a real alley of shops in Rowling's native Scotland. I understand that claustrophobic tourists dislike the narrow streets but Rowling wanted it that way. See the first movie where Hagrid takes Harry shopping for school supplies in DA. It was like that in real life when I visited Universal and I can see why she insisted it had to be a specific width. I felt like I was walking in Harry's footsteps, seeing all the ancient shops and curios. With Rowling, in most cases, there IS a method to the madness.

Just returned from a 5 day visit in orlando. Spent two days at univeral, and two days at disney. Long story short...Universal is the best theme park i've ever visited, so far in life. Disney felt dated, unexciting, and ultimately disappointing. Its unfortunate because my initial day going to disney (AK first, and then HS the next day), I was very eager and excited, but starting from my experience with Navi river journey, i realized that Disneys attractions and even the parks in general dont have the same attention to detail, immersion, or enjoyment as universals parks attractions. Both days my family and I were in disney, we left late afternoon to spend the rest of the day at universal. Each time I was convinced how far superior universal is. Going to Disney actually made me appreciate universal even more. Even Universals food is better (although I think its easier to get food faster in Disney). When Epic universe opens, its going to be a tough time for Disney.

As a former huge Disney fan since the 1980s, my disappointment in current Disney management cannot be overstated. They’ve declined to the point that I no longer trust them. Universal’s handling of Harry Potter has been nothing short of amazing, and I’m glad they acquired the rights instead. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with it in Epic Universe.

When disney first proposed their park it was "a cross between flintstones and medieval village". The Trouble is that because US designers arent around the kind of historic buildings we have in the UK every day, everything was cartoonish and oversized and not architecturally correct making it all look fake. Now, the parks are entirely designed by UK designers working on behalf of Universal Creative, many of whom worked on the films and all of whom are movie art directors and used to working with the kind of detail Rowling and TBP require.

The Harry Potter sections of Universal, including the connecting train ride is some of the most immersive attractions to happened anywhere. It's actually stunning the level of detail that has gone into it - not just the facades but even the ride queues. It actually puts the rest of Universal's park to shame where some of theming, especially in the Marvel / Toon sections amounts to little more than paint schemes and some signage. It definitely shows what a park can do when it puts its money where its mouth is. The funny part is Disney trying the same approach for Star Wars and while it's certainly immersive, I don't think it has received anywhere close the acclaim as Harry Potter has for capturing the spirit of its source material or just being fun to walk through.

So one thing that wasn’t mentioned was what the tourist industry was like in the US after 9/11/2001. Travel and tourism was on a huge decline. Basically, during COVID, everyone wanted to travel, and be among large crowds, which seems odd considering that is not something you should do during a pandemic, but after 9/11, it was the exact opposite. Americans, who made up a large chunk of park attendance were afraid to fly since that was the method terrorists used. Driving was an option, except the fears of a terrorist attack at some place iconic in Americana like WDW. This didn’t keep people away during the holidays, but it did during the rest of the year. Both WDW and Universal had reduced hours, some as early as 6pm!!! And shows like fireworks were no longer daily since they were so expensive for what little tourists show up. Building such a land like Hogsmeade would be a dangerous high risk move.
While Universal was building Hogsmeade, they were corralling people out of lands before 6, making people wait longer for shows, so they could perform in front of a larger crowd, and other such disappointments, that caused my family not to want to return for nearly a full decade. Their money was being spent on this new land, while Disney was keeping its parks open 2 hours later than Universal. Still early, but since everything was walk on, and shows were actually given special times, you felt like you were still getting your moneys worth.
Then there’s Iger and the catching up. Cars Land needed to happen because DCA didn’t really have much. Eisner was opening up parks left and right, while Iger was all about expansion lands. Only one new park was opened, Shanghai, and that was more of a business deal to try to market themselves to China. There already was a park in Hong Kong, but the Chinese government wanted something of their own, and helped fund the project.
Universal went and built Epic Universe, but what was Disneys response? They always opened a new park before Universal could. But even before COVID, when profits were high, there was no new park. Maybe it was the debt taken on by all the acquisitions, I don’t know.

    • @SuperPaez
      @SuperPaez ปีที่แล้ว

Modern Disney is definitely mismanaging the parks, with the 7,000 CAS member layoff on top of Chapek's previous firing of maintenance workers, points to severe cost-cutting measures while at the same time trying to spike up the prices of the park to exploit it as much as possible. (The only explanation for Tron taking 5 YEARS to build).
The whole firing of CAS members seems really off to me as a plan in the long run against Universal, talent and workers leaving to Universal was always talked about but always on a limited scale given the simple size of both parks. But w/ Epic Universe incoming, Universal is preparing to eat a lot more of the Orlando tourism market, but also the working class available. Universal already has significantly higher pay and still Disney is fighting against the union rn
I can only imagine that Disney executives do not think Epic Universe is sufficient enough of a threat to throw money at since other areas of the studio need more direct attention (I'm guessing this is where the debt acquisition comes in). Maybe they're right, While GE wasn't the big fundamental changer like WW in Islands was, they have increased profits and visitors and I doubt the number of visitors would drastically decrease even with Epic Universe.
But Disney failed to get the rights to HP 4 times and paid the price, it seems they will pay the price for failing to recognize Universal as threat.

the biggest difference between Universal and Disney is, that Universal uses their IPs to create art, wich then turns into money, while Disney has no respect towards their IPs and just throws them around like an overpriced six flags park because they see them as money makers. And the problem is: both works. But Disney does not respect their IPs, nor do they respect their customers. They think their customers are fanboy/fangirl idiots (wich they are, but thats how the concept works) who will pay any price if something has the Disney brand on it. Universal on the other hand knows their customers are mostly simps for movies (not universal as a brand), and want to experience immersive rides themed to their favourite movies that are actually entertaining, telling a story, and look beautiful. You just feel the money invested in those rides. At disney, sometimes I feel like "Where did the 200 million dollars go that you allegedly spent on this?"- because the plots are so damn uninteresting and boring, it all feels shallow (im talking spider man ride, the Cars studio tour replacement in Paris, etc)
That being said, they still build good rides from time to time. The star wars land may be an original planet no known from the movies, but Rise Of The Resistance is an absolute masterpiece! And the whole land looks stunning. But Avangers Campus and stuff like that make me not want to trust Disney anymore.

Apart from the bank room, it was simply a walk - where none of the exhibits could be touched. I then spent 120 pounds on tat for her in the gift shop - what a complete rip off. Universal Studios did AMAZING with Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando! Absolutely love that they built Hogsmeade and Daigon Alley experiences. We went there in 2021 for the first time. Incredible!! My sons were Harry Potter fans when they were young. They were 24 and 25 when we visited WW and absolutely were blown away. Bravo to JK Rowling to holding to her vision. Disney can certainly improve on Avengers Camp. It is so plain and lacks the immersion that WW has. Though we like Galaxy’s Edge, again, feels like Disney held back. We don’t go to theme parks much due to how expensive they have become (please Universal, don’t do what Disney is doing with exorbitant price hikes), so when we do, it is big vacation for our family.
