Good points, especially on home wrenching. Bike maintenance really isn’t the black magic mechanics make it out to be (probably to protect their income or because they can’t do much else). Common sense, a cup of tea and some youtube videos should be enough to tackle at least 75 per cent of common bike repairs, saving you a bunch of time, money and missed rides in the long term.
As someone with shop experience, yes, it's not some dark art. As long as one has mechanical aptitude and a basic understanding in mechanical parts, most procedures can be easily done by oneself.
Yea a bikes a bike. Most people don't want to fk it up so just pay. I mean my bike us all star nuts with different nm settings, I don't have a torque wrench but I've been messing with bikes 40 odd years and never fkd a bolt yet. But yea it's easy just time consuming sometimes
The crankset is probably the least significant part regarding groupset performance (does look bling and saves some decent weight though, it also isn't consumable). From my experience, the things that significantly affect shift quality are (in order) alignment/adjustment, cable quality, chain/cassette wear, shifter and derailleur.
I used to ride Shimano in the MTB and still do in the gravel bike but Sram has lasted me so much, man I just keep on shredding no probs. On the other had, some Chinese products have become very good and their price is affordable.
Bringing a Thermos for hot drinks and home-made snacks and packed lunch saves me a bit. Otherwise it's £6-£10 every time I have a snack and drink, easily £30 in a day, a bit shocking. And then, yeah, I don't buy the parts or bike I'd really like. I don't even have a dropper post, I just stop and use my quick release, and my bike is an obviously old and low-spec Hardrock. If MTB was my only hobby or if I was good at it I'd probably be happy to commit more money to it, but I have a motorbike too and I need to keep my commuter bicycle in good shape for cycling to work.
Good video with excellent advice. My biggest money saving tips are buying second hand, upgrade only when items are on sale/special offers, allocate time to learn how to work on your bike with some decent tools (including a work stand) and regular cleaning (with a bucket of cold water) and maintenance.
buy 3 chains and wax them all together. When bikes need the chain cleaning just swap out and re wax all three when dirty. Not only saves time and energy re heating wax over and over again you also prolong the drivetrain as it all gradually wears along with the 3 chains more slowly and evenly
Just fitted a new cassette and chain on my bike today. Took the freehub apart and serviced it, noticed the bearing in the freehub nearest the lockring was bad, had there not been the axle holding it together it could have caused damage, hope hub. Think I’d had my moneys worth of the bearings, always bought the proper ones saving money in the long run
What’s your top money-saving tip?
Ride your bike more it's good for health both mental and physical. Doctors aren't cheap😀

Mixing 12sp parts from Shimano. Use Deore and only invest for higher grade stuff where it matters, i.e. the crank set.
Great tip! The level of Deore components these days is very high and great for riders on a budget!

Use Squirt lube wax. The chain will last well above 5000km.
It’s cheaper to ride an old motorcycle than ride a modern cycle

Lot's of good info here! Thanks - good vid!
Not running into mtb is the best money saving tip
