Those were definitely some great finds. The one thing I’d caution people on is not using the bike beyond its intended purpose. Most of those are MTB style bikes not meant to be ridden on dirt. I’ve actually seen one fall apart on a ride and it was kind of scary.
Yup! I said it at the end not sure if you caught that
Not using a bike beyond it’s intended use is pretty much a great advise regardless of the bike’s price tag.
@@EvansMTBSaga Is this gonna be a series?
@@lil_ryan16 Im not sure. Depends on if it gets high views and right now it's not performing that well.
@@EvansMTBSagagonna comment for engagement numbers ;)
This video was so good, MTB dosen't have to be expensive. You should do a follow up video upgrading that bike with $200.
Such a good idea! Pls do it i would be interested
My guess is hydraulic brakes and a fork. Probably used parts.
I would like to see that as well. I have a frame that I'd like to build off of but I'm a newbie for the most part when it comes to mtb.
This video genuinely seems original and great content. Kudos to you!
Thanks Connor!
Bro took inspiration from rayan trahan
ah yes original when video style is from ryan trahan
exactly like ryan trahan, game plan, budget, etc. not totally original but I still love this content
@@hellolello9205its not original at all. He took all of the ideas from Ryan
finally a really good mountain youtuber who odes not brag about his expensive bike, and understands his audience. Keep going buddy you are gonna reach 1 million.
Evan, Great content as usual. I'd like to see a part 2 where you level up your skills on a budget bike but only from beginner to intermediate initially and see what parts start to break on that thing. If nothing breaks take it from intermediate to advanced trails till it does. Would be fun to see what gives out first and how long it keeps up.
I'd rather not risk my safety riding something until it breaks. Sounds like an entertaining idea though
Watch Sam pilgrims video if you haven’t where he bought a few hundred dollar Amazon bike and rode it til it broke
@@Jetsonn those are fun videos to watch. I'm not suggesting Evan do it to that extreme or put himself at risk. Just what a user could expect before part failures. It looked like he did a couple of table tops on it in this video and was just curious to see how long the bike would hold up before the user outgrew it. Not suggesting he snap a frame.
@@GF-cb8rr gotcha. Yeah I’m curious about that as well
@@EvansMTBSaga good call!!!!!!!
Glad you mentioned the issue with the box store bikes, and the bike rental. Bike rentals are affordable and a great option to enter the sport. Especially because they will be serviced by an experienced mechanic. Better to save up and buy the right bike for you than to purchase something you can afford immediately and be disappointed.
one bike between your legs is better than 10 bikes in the store
he kinda looks like V sauce
yee agreed
Coming from someone who raced BMX this video has some great advice, I started mountain biking this year with a 600 dollar bike. With experience in jumping and the basics of riding a bike I grew out of this bike in 3 months and ended up buying a 1500 dollar hardtale that was much more fit and durable for jumping and tougher trails. Overall this video is 100% truthful and has awesome advice for beginners 👍
Your videos keep getting better and better everytime you upload 🔥🔥
Thanks so much!
Would be great to see you upgrade the bike bit by bit with parts that you find on the cheap, new or used, whatever fits the budget you deceide to use.
Airwalk... gave me a damn whiplash that's how fast I was pulled back into the past. I remember using them when skateboarding.
Loved that you made this!
One thing tho I wished you showed us more footage of you riding, demonstrating the bikes capabilities better but overall I enjoyes. Thanks for this:)
i second this. maybe a second video showing how far we can use that bike? i have a similar bike rn, bought it to commute since the roads here are very bad, but then got interested in the sport! the tag kinda scares me since idk how far can i do😅
@@chiquithareally as long as you don’t go doing jumps or fairly big drops, you should be fine.
Who else has watched this 1000 times😂
😮
Just you buddy
@@jrsthesedays925 fair enough😅
Me😂
I'm not alone yeyyyyy
Always a good day when Evan uploads
Now this is a budget mountain biking video I was expecting to see when I saw your CALLED OUT video and I 100% agree with your ending statements.
Thanks Dave! It was a fun challenge keeping the budget that low
I started from that budget too then a friend introduced me to trails..
THE HUNGER NEVER STOPS, DUDE! THE UPGRADES KEEP COMING! SEND HALP
Yeah looking back I should've dropped $1000 on a hardtail. A super nice one can be found for $1000
So glad to see this video! Im on a very similar budget and I'm upgrading from a old walmart bike to a real budget hardtail in a few days. Like even said at the end you should be careful on those walmart bikes. I had a full suspension walmart bike that snapped in half on a jump once. Thank God I was okay! Just remember the bigger the jump the bigger the price!
This is the video I needed btw thanks 🙏
Congratulations on the 100,000 subs Evan
Solid content. I like the approach, setting basic rules and not being able to upgrade the bike with parts you have kicking around etc., and actually sticking to it without any "cheats". And wise note on the word of caution.
Thanks Navan! It was a fun premise and maybe I'll come back with a $200 limit next time haha
Sick video, keep up the great work!
One of the only TH-camrs that I get excited to see what he does next
this was a very nice vid I learned a lot!
👍👍 I will defiantly try this with my dad
man I'm your biggest fan love the vids I've watched every single one
Keep doing what you're doing we appreciate it
5:16 yeah they told me many things when I rode a modified huffy bike that I somehow sunk 1000$ in upgrades in😭 I'm riding a 2008 trek Fuel EX Evo 8 that I was gifted to at my favorite bike park now🤘
Love that segment close.
Thanks Spartan! I was loving it too. I wish I had thrown a bit more style haha
I really love your vids keep posting u r inspiring to me!!!
Love the comment about renting a bike to try out the sport instead of buying one. Wish I would have done that before I went through department store bikes. I’m heading to Bentonville early next month. Would be cool to see you on the trails!
It was very fun filming this!
Your bike next!
Good job on hitting 100k subs that’s crazy ❤
Such a great outro!
ur doing great evan!
Everyone was saying that about my Marlin as well and now look I replaced everything on it and it's one of the best bikes I've ever had
I did bought a bike Gt Aggressors Pro for $300 from 2019 which was in my opinion a good deal, and couple of years later I have bought a trail bike. Most bikes for $300 are rarely that good, and very pleased with explaining the issues with box store bikes are not always reliable.
Same here, bought a GT Aggressor pro for half price (400$), and I use it for XC and easy DH trails without an issue. I’m not an aggressive rider, so if I see anything too sketchy, I walk my bike down😂
Awesome video dude keep it up
Wow this actually great MTB newbie starterpack
Love the vid! Maybe turn it into a series where you progress on a budget, with buget oriented parts, only stuff that needs to be upgraded.
Side note - where are you finding Vans for $50? That must be on sale XD most Vans retail in that $65-$80 range. Got my Wards for $70, they grip great on flat pedals
This is exactly the review I was looking for. Thank you. I'm 6'2 and weigh 265 and am simply just wanting a decent mountain bike to ride up and down the road or on my local paved Greenway to try and assist me in losing weight and staying healthy.
Everyone has been pushing me for an expensive bike from 700 to 6,000 dollars. Lol. I'm not spending that kind of money just to ride on pavement. Anyway, thank you for the review
Great point dude. When I was in my teens I did dirt jump, race, and a lil flat land . Skills came back rather quick while riding the Axum. Already looking for a upgrade lol. Been about 2 months . On point my man.
Haha thanks for the props on that. I had to learn the hard and expensive way
@@EvansMTBSaga oh yeah. You are most welcome. I'm thinking about upgrades but I'll probably out grow that as well. I believe my next Mtb will be a 27.5 I find them easier to throw around. 29ers seem a bit unwieldy. But maybe that's just me.
Rocking the kick stand🤙
I used to almost exclusively use the wellgo "Ritchey clipless clones" - knockoff pedals are great!
you can definitely still have fun with this, when you are starting out, you usually don't need a Pro-spec-bike anyways
Dang that BMX jump was epic
100k! Let’s gooo 🎉
This was awesome! Thank you for keeping us broke people in mind
Absolutely! People say I lost sight of that but I never have forgotten my budget MTB upbringing
100K subscribers, congrats
Super close!
That ending had me thirsting for more!
I picked up that Schwinn Taff Comp deal too. It's pretty good for the price and it is at least upgradable with higher quality parts. Mine had some big issues, the biggest being the dish of the rear wheel. By the end of a 2 mile loop it was rubbing against the chainstay. However, a few minutes with a spoke wrench and it was better. Still, the repairs this bike needs out of the box and it may not be the best choice for a beginner.
Mine didn't have that issue at first, but same issue for me after the first ride, tire is running
@@EvansMTBSaga Yeah. Out of the box mine was fine, but got out of whack after a small bump-jump off a root, I think. The fix was easy enough, but would definitely annoy someone new.
Fortunately, a bike shop can fix that issue easily.
Amazing! I would not have even considered that it was possible to get a whole setup for $300. From some comments, it does sound like the parts are so sub-standard that the bike would not last long on rough trails. How about the NEXT step up in quality where the bike would stay together for a whole season of at least medium level trails. I have no issues with buying used, but that can be tricky.
I ended up finding a old 2003 Mtb nrs 2 in the trash I upgraded it to one by 10 with cheap shimano group set off eBay for 200 bucks and got a dropper post for 75 bucks off a eBay auction been riding it all season 3-4 times a week two times a week are Mtb group rides and it keeps up great
in the Philippines we have a MTB Hardtrail and upgrading some parts and we donot run it from downhill we ride on the we called it criterium set up😊
This is going to be a sick videos
4:22 pleasantly surprised to see you wearing nike zoom pulse sneakers. I wear those daily in the hospital and I love them
Haha oh yeah! Good shoes for when I used to be a nurse.
Ahh now I understand the schwinn box from the last video
People complain about the cost of mountain biking. The reality is, you can get started cheap. The used market is flooded with bikes, parts, and gear. Fun video
Nice video! I too ride the Axum DP. Walmart has the huffy kit that comes with the multi tool, tire spoons etc that’s really cheap. Also have cheap cages and water bottles as well as aluminum snafu pedals although not as good as the ones you got
Oh nice I didn't know that kit existed! I'll check it out.
My fav bike for now is Rockrider ST900
I love your videos this is not a bad budget for starting mountain biking but you can’t get very reliable parts.
I would recommend buying some extra protection equipment as crashes are quite common among beginners.
Nice to see the updated taff comp got the ltwoo derailleur, I got some off brand one with mine two years ago and that was the worst experience ever. The chain kept getting stuck between the cage and the jockey wheel which happened about every 15 minutes or every time I hit a decent sized bump
Yeah I was surprised with that. I still heard a bit of chain slap but I didn't drop the chain
@@EvansMTBSaga either way it was cool to see! The taff comp is what got me into mountain biking, only at the time it was around $250 haha
Now THIS is a properly realistic budget build.
that fork sound on the end ;D
Awsome bang for the buck bike and helmet and even mips wow! Love your content and phillosophy what biking should be about going out having fun even on low budget. Now im feeling bad burning money and still riding my 26er. In the 90s we were riding only hardtails without suspension forks on every trail and none of my frames cracked :)
legend has it that on the very last jump to air in the video the bike landed, the forks bottomed out and the tyres exploded the wheels buckled, the frame cracked, but even that was after the crankarms bent chain snapped and seatpost sled down on the run up to the kicker. lols
Man, I love your channel 😃
Thanks dude!
Love that bike
Yes. Next video.
I love the editing! (reminds me of ryan trahan kinda) 👍👍
I did not know they still made Airwalk. I'm going to hunt some down
A while ago I managed to get a used full sus for £300 (2016 Voodoo Canzo)! Air suspension, hydraulics, etc
My first mountain bike was back in university, £130 for a Cannondale F6, only issue was that the fork didn't work, so I got a RockShox XC28 for 40 quid
Also do remember if you have a straight head tube if it's 44mm you can used a tapered fork with a cheap new headset.
I have nicer bikes now but it should never be about blowing money, riding is just straight and simple fun
Those were the days 😂 but I really believe if we speak with our wallets, the prices will come back down permanently, not just random sales
@@EvansMTBSaga Yeah, Calibre/Polygon and Vitus are killing it with the stuff from like $700-1500, hope to see some great stuff trickle down cheaper too
i started with an old second hand avanti and have recently upgraded to an avanti Hammer S
I just subscribed to see a 140mm SR Suntour Epixon to shred AM trail from your channel! Yes, you read it right if you confused 😂.
yo great ryan trahan vid
Nice work Evan Just noticed when you jumped at the end and the landing was so stiff since you got used to a full suspension and mostly you just let the rear suspension do all the work so just something that needs improvement and probably takes time in getting used to
since I myself got in the same situation few years ago where I switched from full sus to hardtail and I can feel my arms and legs sore after every ride
I was mainly just goofing around. But I agree the transition from full sus to hardtail takes a few minutes to get used to!
Saw you on the greenway coming from the Castle back on Thursday night (first night ever in Bentonville). Said "hey Evan" and it looks like it definitely caught you off guard haha.
Haha I remember you passing by! I'm still new to being recognized 😂😭
Reminds me of the Ryan trahan only penny challenge but still great to see you showing you don’t need something super expensive and fancy
haha yeah I love Ryans stuff! Hes doing a new penny series next month!!
I miss those airwalk shoes. I need to go to walmart. 😀
GREAT video, it's insane walmart doesn't have a tutorial on it's own
I'd do it for them for the right price 😂
Nice idea i love THE video
What is a clutch on a derailleur?whats its purpose and how does it work?
saw ur video from tiktok, this is nice content
Haha I don't have TikTok 🤦
@@EvansMTBSaga someone reposted it
The surprising thing is that in Romania with 100$ (500 ron) you can buy a decent full-suspention MTB and the difference is crazy
For a first time bike to see if someone wants to do more riding or just a bike to commute on it seems like it would be fine.
Dude I have that exact same helmet every feature, part and brand.
Nice video and MTB costs can sure add up Evan. I'm not sure if those shoes would be great with the massive logo on the bottom? I'd also wonder if new riders would be better off buying a bike shop bike to get some advice during purchase and possibly get some gear included the cost. These videos by youtubers are the extremes, super cheap options in some and then very expensive /unreachable for most at the other. Not too much on just ordinary reliable options (although I understand this is probably boring as the bikes just work as expected).
I do love riding and whatever gets you going.
factoring in lube, shoes and pump is a little silly.
+ you can save on a pump if you always visit the gas station. You can also save on lube if you use olive oil which most people have at home.
Sick video
It would be cool to see a series at different price points or just different levels of "Walmart" bikes. The Kent Trouvail and Ozarks new mtb seem so actually have some potential for serious riding
yeah Seth (Berm Peak) just did a video on the Ozark. I've seen it in store and it's damn good looking bike.
ramdom: you should try a dartmoor bike , they are really robust and stiff and dont break the bank . they are realy cool
its very possible to start mountain biking, i started with less than 200 dollars and i have a really good setup. I have a hyper 27 inch bike from walmart (it has a bit of a stiff frontal suspension and also suspension in the middle of the bike), a 20 dollar helmet thats durable and a 3 dollar bike lock which is useful if you live in an apartment building or take your mountain bike to school. for an extra 20 to 30 dollars you could get shin and elbow pads if you want it
Finally a video For us por people
What I did when I was younger was get my parents to get me some tools. And put a few ads up for bike repair and service even though I had no idea what I was doing 😂. I learned with yt and saved enough Money to get my first proper bike 😎
Anyone noticing @Ryan Trahan’s theme song?
That is what I'm looking for just need to see if walmart still has that bike
Planning to buy 320$ NEW bike. For that money model i found looks pretty nice for off-road and also a bit of city driving
My very first mountain bike was a commencal meta sx and it wasn't cheap but I wanted a bike i didn't really need to upgrade fir some time
Haha what a glorious first bike!
Congratulations Evan!!🎉🎉 100k insane!
If you do an update with budget upgrades definitely check out pinkbike like in your other videos. I ride an axum and I got a take off suntour raidon 34 for mine for $130, what un upgrade over the stock fork!
It is, I bought a good mtb off Facebook marketplace for around 50 gbp and then a full face helmet, gloves, mask and goggles equaling to 100
I've had the same multitool for 2 years and its great, got it for 5 bucks I rarealy use it beacause i only go on short rides where if something soes break or get lose i just ride home and fix it with my tools.but for 5 bucks it has defenetly payd itself off and gotten me out of some bad situations. Also i did a small upgrade to it, i put a small presta valve adapter inside the 10mm socket it fits perfectly.
I was really impressed with the pedal wrench in it. Never seen that before
