Specialized Butcher T9 Trail or Hillbilly T9 Gravity upfront and an Eliminator T7 Trail in the back for Enduro Tracks. For lighter duty on home trails or XC, I will run an Eliminator up front and an Purgatory T7 Trail in the back.

I'm using Maxxis Reckon 2.25 and maxxis reckon race 2.4 29 inch wheels on a custom built 1.1k€ worth Hardtail and i use this bike with this set of tyres on almost any terrain and i have no complaints at all. I do around 800-900km distance in a month, on asphalt, mud, in the forrest, for dirtjumps, while raining , and they have insane grip cause i feel like i m surfing on the bike all the time. After 1400km distance use they are still insane
Bought a bike that came with Nobby Nics (2.6 front, 2.4 rear) which I run as a SS hardtail. Great tires, but way too aggressive for the hardpack and granite where I ride. I switched to the new Mezcal XC race (2.4 front/2.4 rear) with the Air-liner light (foam inserts). The difference was night and day. The bike came alive on the Mezcals. So much more playful. Way more grip than you would expect, and crazy fast rolling. I went from a gummy, draggy feel with the Nics, to the feeling of floating on the trail. Perfect for the hardpack clay, granite and wet roots. I actually broke traction more on the Nics, especially with out of the saddle technical climbing. The nobs on the Nics did take some bite out of the rooty sections, but now I can run lower pressures on the Mezcals without much increased drag. Mezcals are much lighter even with the inserts. Just goes to show how important tire selection is to the feel of the bike. Classic case of being "over tyred".
Excellent info, something I’ve always tried to understand is the correct tyre to use. I did a lot of research for my hardtail and I’m the end took off the Vittoria barzos. Replaced them with two schwalbe magic Mary’s and am so glad I did… completely changed my rides and feeling of security on the bike.
I run the same tires in front and back. My current rubber is the Specialized Ground Control. They are lite, but challenging to seal up with the tubeless tire sealant due to the thin sidewalls.
This vid is the perfect subject for me atm. I put Maxxis Minion DH 2.5 tyres on my bike (Canyon Grand Canyon 7), but most of the time, I commute. I really feel the drag. I recently rode my old bike with hutchinson kraken 2.4 tyres, and I felt really light and fast. The difference is significant ! I am thinking of installing the original schwalbe 2.25 that came with the bike. The only problem is those tyres are not tubeless. I am so used to tubeless (0 puncture in more than a year).
I feel you, I swapped to the Maxxis dissector. It rolls really fast, but corners well. Maxxis Dissector 27.5x2.4, maxx terra, Exo casing. Just, don’t get double down. It’s really heavy….

Dissector front and recon rear would be a good choise for trails and commuting. Or ground control front and fast trak rear. Even fasterand more XC would be Fast trak front and renegate rear. In summer on roads and gravel if its mostly try. 2x Reneage run like crazy And yes absolutly put in more pressure for commuting. If max is 3.5 Bar go 2.5- 3 bar on streets. You can alwaysä air down for trails to ~1.6 Bar

I’m running a Barzo 2.25 in front and Mezcal 2.25 in the back for my XC setup. More grip on the front, faster rolling at the back. At the end it also comes down to skill I feel, my local bike shop owner is running fast XC tires in front and back and absolutely shreds the XCO competitions around here, even without increased front grip.
I'm using a Michelin Wild AM2 Competition front and a Michelin Force AM2 Rear. Both 29x2.4. Actually they came stock in my Brazilian version of Swift Duty Evo HT enduro mtb. I'm using tubeless and rim defender and have no complain about all of this setting. But sometimes I felt like I needed more grip. I'm waiting for the need of changing tyres, so I'll put a pair of Michelin Wild Enduro 29x2.4, or maybe a pair of Schwalbe Magic Mary 29x2.6.

My car tires were $250 each. My bike tires are like $70. You have to compare like for like. The cheapest car tires against the cheapest MTB tires. Then it's not quite as bad.
@fraanzfan8158 insurance, gas, maintenance,...double the cost for a motorcycle compared to a bike plus a motocross you have limitations of where you can go. Mountain biking is way more flexible. Buy a used bike and buy online parts if you cannot afford bike shops. Biking can cost a small fraction of a motorcycle. Also crash a motorcycle and the cost of fixing it is very high. Upgrade parts for motorcycle can cost tens of thousands

I ride trails mostly & use Johnny Watts 365’s. They are a great tyre from Schwalbe. They aren’t advertised so much which is great as it means I can always get them 😂
Tires are very complex, especially if you’re new to MTB. In my experience, the items that matter the most are tread pattern and lug sizes. The tire size, compound, casing type, etc. are generally predetermined by your bike or the tire tread (or cost if you’re on a low budget). If you’re fully lost though, ask some friends or other riders in your local area. You will see a pattern between the type of tire they use and their riding style/riding conditions.
Mazza enduro casing, front and back. Not the greatest on pavement or hard pack, but they're absolutely beastly in the dirt, on lose over hard, sand, mud, and over tech like roots and rocks.
My fav combo to date for single track 27.5x 2.6 IRC Tanken 26x2.4 Panaracer Swoop AT I do have a 26x2.6 Arrow racing savage (restickered Duro razorback ) to still test and compare
I have one for Owen; my local trails are infused with rock gardens best solution I've found is to run 2.3+ tires on 25 to 30mm inner depth rims to avoid constantly "curbing" the rims. Why manufacturers don't build in a lip like car tires?

The reason cycling stuff costs more than moto is weight. Lightweight is a very difficult engineering and materials science problem. Bikes and tires can be cheap and are cheap at Walmart but they aren’t light weight.
I don't, I just ride with DH/Enduro tires everywhere lol Maybe if I get a second wheelset, I'll set it up for gravel or XC tire But whether DH 2.6 tire or an XC 4.0 fatbike tire, I never felt affected by the so called drag
Here's what I got I'm in Mississippi so subtropical meaning lots of moisture I'm riding both the hunting trails around my home and using it as a form of transportation bc I'm tired of walking the roads all the time My trails are mixed between extremely hard packed dirt and mud Got a lot of big steep hills both up and down and half those hills have turns in the middle and they all have turns at the top and bottom And by turns I mean instant 90°death traps So I'm going between soft mud all the way to asphalt What kinda tire do you think I should go for when I'm wanting to go fast in all that

I've been looking alot into tyres this week one thing I have noticed Vitoria V pattern roll forward whare as most others V pattern run backwards for more breaking and Grip! So the V pattern forward on Vitoria and backwards on magic mary etc Vitoria would be faster rolling for XC and road but not as good as Magic mary or Minion having their V pattern rolling backwards
Howdy, The V tread pattern vittoria's I feel you're talking about are the new Peyote XC Race tyres - if you're looking for a tyre thats more comparable to the Magic Mary's or Minions then you could look at the Vittoria Mazza, its a burlier Trail and Enduro tread - I'm running them up front on my trail bike - and the grip is impressive! When you figure out the tread compound like Vittoria has, you can still design a fast tire that works for people that weigh more than 140 lbs and who ride to rain that isn't perfectly manicured

Yes, of course. Just don't go too narrow (in your case 2.0 or so), otherwise your rim wont be able to hold the tire properly anymore, or too wide (check what your frame manufacturer says about maximum tire clearance)
Turn your Vitorias round so the V tread is running backwards way it should be for enduro DH like all others for Grip and breaking Vitoria thing about rolling speeds and have the V tred facing forward so alot faster rolling less Grip and breaking! But you would have to big them up being a sponsor I suppose!?
I run kenda hellkat front and nevegal 2 rear both emc casing and both 2.40 section in my gt force Carbon pro light tyres but im not so heavy i like the Rolling resistance buy i Need more breaking power when then nevegal Is finish ill go with the hellkat emc in the rear

Interesting - Well ultra low tread hight can be fast rolling - XC tyres are great examples like the Vittoria Peyote - so perhaps the worn out Ikon was even lower tread than the Aspen! Cheers Owen
Dirt bike (moto) tire knob patterns, especially front, have remained largely the same for decades. Why do our mountain bikes need to be so different? When will moto adopt what's so great about MTB knob shape and placement? And it's easy to spend equal money on each discipline's tires, sadly.

The bike tyres we use are pretty much the same level as the pros use. But car tyres that pros use I’m sure cost more than my Yaris

Pirelli scorpion emtb tyres are the best at grip at rolling resistance ive found, literally couldnt find a fault with them at all!

What’s a “tyre?” Is that what I need to search for when looking for “tires” online?
I run kenda hellkat front and nevegal 2 rear both emc casing and both 2.40 section in my gt force Carbon pro light tyres but im not so heavy i like the Rolling resistance buy i Need more breaking power when then nevegal Is finish ill go with the hellkat emc in the rear
Why are there no designations for the actual thread used? Giving a TPI is kind of useless if the T is not specified, isn't it?

35mm ID or greater... I ran 3.0 tyres on 35mm ID Carbon hoops without issue.

Depends on what you mean by all rounder. But Martello 2.3 tnt is great and so is the Syrra if you want more speed.
part of the point is that you need to dive into that yourself to figure that out what would work best because you are you and not somebody else.

@@coolbananas4719 That is great tire good tire to look at it comes a few different versions not just sizes which make it preforms differently depend on what options you choose. This where compounds and other options come in to play as far as choosing a tire.
Too much Grip = You'll get there later
Not enough Grip = You might not get there at all

Interesting - Well ultra low tread hight can be fast rolling - XC tyres are great examples like the Vittoria Peyote - so perhaps the worn out Ikon was even lower tread than the Aspen!

Dirt bike (moto) tire knob patterns, especially front, have remained largely the same for decades. Why do our mountain bikes need to be so different? When will moto adopt what's so great about MTB knob shape and placement? And it's easy to spend equal money on each discipline's tires, sadly.
