We grow a lot of bismuth. In my experience the color is determined by the temperature the bismuth was when it was exposed to oxygen. It's an oxidized layer. To get more variance we slowly pull Crystal's out, or slowly pour the excess molten bismuth out. This leads to more dynamic color as there is more variance in the temperature as it was exposed to air.

    More about bismuth.
    1. It's heavy because its density is very near to lead, and it is used for non toxic sinkers for fishing as a result.
    2. It's very diamagnetic. You can make (and I have made) a magnet levitate using a large neodymium magnet, a small neodymium magnet(the one that will levitate), and two large chunks of bismuth, of which are cheap especially compared to the large magnet. A quick TH-cam search will reveal some tutorials for this.
    3. It might have been your lighting, but bismuth is only a very small amount more brassy than tin but definitely not simply brass colored. Looks like dull steel to the eye until compared side by side to another metal for me personally. The piece you hold up in the video just looks oxidized on the bottom as well.
    4. I like using a little cast iron skillet intended for making a cute little pancake to melt it down on the stove top.
    5. You can make the crystals by melting it down and letting it cool very slowly. Before the surface can solidify, you'll want to pour it off into another crucible or pot. The cooled bismuth in your first crucible will be topped with crystals. Directly after pouring the surface off, the crystals it leaves behind will be shiny and mirror like, but will very quickly oxidize on exposure to air and will take on all kinds of colors.
    6. It's still molten metal, be extremely cautious. Do not pour it into another crucible or pot from any height other than as low as possible. Do not put the crucible into water to cool the pot or the metal, this will violently boil the water and could cause the bismuth to pop or splash. You're not wiping molten bismuth off of your face.
Other than that, have fun. :)

Bismuth is also in the sprinklers of fire systems because I think it's low melting point makes it do something to the sprinklers and starts to put the fire out. It is also in pepto bismol.

    • @15M34-e7k
      @15M34-e7k 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Used as a component in the fusible alloy band that keeps the sprinkler head occluded (plugged). In a fire condition, will melt and allow the plug to fall away (under pressure), and the sprinkler extinguishes the fire.

I know this comment is late as heck, but for anyone else going through the same thing, you can just melt a bismuth in a small pan (don’t use one you cook in!!!) and it will re-crystallise as it cools.
      Easy peasy. Nothing special needed.

    Glorious parody by AirFarceWon:
"There's No Bismuth Like This Bismuth
    That is Bismuth, I know
    Iridescent with metallic yellow
Quite unique, collectors seek it so
There has never been a stone so mellow,
That any fellow has seen aglow
There's no rock show like my rock, oh
It's not one that you'd throw
Hunt and scratch in Germany, or dig in France
    Search wherever, no circumstance,
    You'd ever find one greater,
    There is just no chance..
    None glow like my Rainbow
All other rock hunters are jealous of mine
They suspect the best collection yet
Could sell it on Ebay, but I shall decline
Bismuth and my heart make too great a set
Much magic in this lovely crystal egg
I'll let 'em die with envy, or just beg...
There's No Bismuth like my Bismuth
    It's high Bismuth, I know
Though there's other ores that I've acquired
None I'd miss as much if they were gone
What, my whole life through, I have desired
Can shame the sparkle of early dawn
There's no passion that is passion
    Like this Bismuth, unlocks
Up until I owned it, I was just a punk
With wimp collections made up of junk
Now, ecstacy consumes me since I found that chunk
I'm thrilled down to my socks...
    I get...off on my rocks !"
