For the record Tool is definitely one of my favorite "newer" groups. I know that's an old group for most guys but when you're as old as I, well you'll understand. This was a time when music launched careers and first albums were vital. You'll find many gems on groups first albums. Enjoy the journey.

Unfortunately Bonham died right before I became of concert age, but I do remember my old man cranking Houses of the Holy when it came out.

I've been to see Bonham's Son Jason play drums with The Led Zeppelin Experience , several times. Took my son, to see A few Led Zeppelin cover bands as well . Kashmir is the best cover band.

I was 19 and living in my first apartment… just spectacular in 1969. Saw them in LA 75 ish but I enjoyed the studio music better. Live they were so loud and drunk but my date/girlfriend was grabbing at me in the parking lot of the Forum.

I am a 70 year old woman and loved Led Zeppelin from the first time I heard them. I remember spending many hours in my room listening to especially their first and second albums. I would put the record on and lay on the bed with the lava light glowing and just let the music take me away. This was in 1970. I'll never forget. Wonderful to see you enjoying this greatness.

I love how you get Led Zepplin. I was in high school when Bonham died. The collective shock and grief of every person in that building was one of the most powerful human events I've ever experienced. What a time to be alive.
The thing that blows my mind about the great 70s bands is they did it all with analog electronics… think about that. No autotune, no fancy modern filters, just pure raw talent. They were MUSIC incarnate and regarded as ROCK GODS.
The equipment was all analogue, but they definitely had some chemical enhancements lol. The 70s ran on coke.

My guitarist and bassist sons make their own peddles, my youngest plays bass and electric guitar, acoustic, regular guitar as does his older brother
Other drummers have played this song, even John Bonham's son Jason has played it with Zeppelin. But No one, I mean no one could ever play it like Bonzo. No one has ever had the technique combined with the feel that he has. And I think no one will ever have that combination. But the four of them together is like they are aliens from a god planet. Oh, for those who haven't heard the live version - 1973 Live at Madison Square Gardens - it will blow you away, literally.

I was a 13 year old girl just starting to explore my music tastes. One winter day I walked downtown to spend my Christmas money and went into the music store. There was a new album out from a new band with a funny name. I took the sample to the listening area and dropped the needle and the first chords of "Good Times Bad Times" banged out of the headphones. Immediately spent my money, ran home and played the whole album. This was the 4th song and by the time it started playing I was already in a trance. Talk about a seismic shift!
Hey Polo. I'm 73 and I must admit that my generation was spoiled. There was so much great music back in the mid-to-late sixties and early seventies and Led Zeppelin was a great example of that. Shout out to you for reacting to this one. Peace.

I like to say that Page is the lightning, Bonzo is the thunder, Plant is the wind moaning and JPJ on keyboards is the rain. They came together and created the perfect storm. When Jimmy pulls out his bow (violin) during live shows, this song is about a half hour long. Jimmy was already performing this song with the violin bow back when he was still with the Yardbirds

Thats a really good way to describe the song. Tbh, I never thought of it that way and personally, I think it's impossible to put into words just how special Led Zeppelin is but if I were to try and find the words to describe their talent (especially in this song) what you said would be a good way to put it. These guys knew from the very beginning that they had something special between the 4 of them. At least that's what it seems to me from everything I've ever read and watched with their interviews and documentaries. I Love Led Zeppelin and no one can compare for sure!

A friend of mine is a drum instructor, has been for years. It's not unusual for drum students to say "I want to sound like (insert drummer)". His standard answer for when someone wanted to sound like Bonham was "Sorry, if you want to sound like John Bonham, you have to be John Bonham". And this was Led Zeppelin just getting started.
After listening to this for over 50 years, IT NEVER GETS OLD!😂 I saw them do this live in Cleveland in 1969 at Music Carnival on the east side. We had seats in aisle five, seats one and two facing their set up 30 feet away. They played their entire first album and most of their as yet unrealesed second. Jimmy played parts of Dazed and Confused with a violin bow to get that erie sound. In 1969, it was MIND BLOWINNG and 54 years later it still is! Great Reaction! THATS HOW WE FELT!😂❤

I was introduced to led zeppelin in 1977 via a tape recorder in a telephone box in Somerset when I was on holiday. I was 15 and went to a barn dance - yes a barn dance - and accepted the last dance from someone who tapped on my shoulder. A coupe of days later we met in a phone box in north Petherton, Somerset. That was when I first heard stairway to heaven, live, and fell in love with led zeppelin. The boyfriend fell by the wayside a few years later. All these years later; I’m now aged 62, I’m just as much in love with led zeppelin. Btw said bf also introduced me to Pink

This was off their 1st album in 1969. I was in high scool and someone had seen them live on their 1st U.S. tour and came to school raving about them. My friends ran out and got their album and the rest is history. Now you understand why they took off like a rocket. My parents said WTF is that!

After all, it’s dazed and confused. Musically and lyrically. John Bonham nails the drums with as much precision as Jimmy Page rakes that lead. John Paul Jones is playing that bass in sync with John Bonham. (I bet Bonham’s drummer son could play his daddy’s works) There’s nobody who sings like Robert Plant. After all he’s a bad-assed blues singer and an awesome one at that.☮️💟

Led Head from the 70's here. What I didn't realize then....This song now reminds me of taking a shamanic journey back and forth from the lower world to the upper world while being somewhat suspended in the middle world. Considering their roots I understand now how they made that possible through their divine talents.✨
And this was only their first album. Late 60's, they were in their early 20's. Incredible talent.

What makes them great is that they have stood the test of time.
Dazed And Confused is absolutely one of Led Zeppelin's best. I grew up in the 60's and was fortunate enough to see them play at the Tampa Stadium about 5 or 6 times. To here them live was a trip! They even sound better live and in person, if you can believe it. 🎶🎵🎶💯👍👌

I’m 61 and have been listening and still listen to Led Zeppelin. I made my children listen to an appreciate Bring it On Home. They still thank me😂. I’m so grateful I grew up listening to such incredible music by incredible musicians!
It’s not the difficulty of the drums, tons of people can “play” it. It’s the feel, the intangible nuances that are hard to put into words, that make JB special.

I never get tired of Led Zeppelin. One of the things to remember when listening to this song is to realize that there was nothing else out there that sounded anything like this... and this track was on Zeppelin's debut album. That's some bold sh@t. I can imagine the record executives scratching their heads on the decision to put this track on their debut album. But it paved the way for all the unusual and groundbreaking music to follow from these guys.
People can play it. But not like John Bonham.

Plants voice is just out of this world. His voice is so strong and soulful at the same time. The greatest.
This is why they're Led Zeppelin and still one of the greatest bands ever. You have Bohnam back there wailing on the drums, Page's guitar is practically talking to you, Plant doing his thing and Jones backing it all up. Over fifty years later and their music is not only still played on modern rock stations, but they're still considered by many as the greatest. Good to you see you continuing down this rabbit hole of Zeppelin, they have a ton of great music.
That riff where Bonham fills in the thunder is what used to be called Zeppelin's signature 'carpet bombing'
One of the very important things to keep in mind is that you're listening to the first, the beginning, the progenitors of 'heavy metal'. This is where it started, some claim the term itself was created to try to describe Led Zeppelin's style of heavy Blues rock. Here we are, 43 years later, and we're STILL listening to them and marveling.
Painting and Sculpture are art expressed in space; Music is art expressed over time.
The crazy thing for me is the fact that Bonham and Plant were around 21 years old at this point. Each member of the band are at the pinnacle of their respective instruments, phenomenal band!

The atmospheric “horror” sounds completely paint eh picture of the disorientation this woman makes him feel. Agony, pleasure, confusion, unexplainable craving for something that causes so much pain. Epic song.

You are very lucky! My parents were born in the 60’s so even they were too young to see a Zeppelin performance.
To think the singer, Robert Plant, and the drummer, John Henry Bonham, were only 20 yrs old when they recorded this song in late Sept/early Oct of 1968. Those distinctive sounding Slingerland toms, which Bonham really brings out the musical tone of those drums so well.
Those "weird" sounds you mentioned was Jimmy Page drawing a violin bow across the strings of his 1959 Fender Telecaster. It's some incredible sounds he got out of that combo. Those flurrying bursts in the guitar solo was really incredible to say the least and his sound was absolutely fantastic.
Robert Plant's raw vocals and passion comes through so well on this track.
Jonesy's bass lines really kept the whole together - thick and meaty sounds were abound from his 1962 Fender Jazz bass.
They were absolutely masters and this song doesn't stop. It's a non-stop music cacophony is sheer brilliance ! Great reaction Polo !
There's a wonderful live version of this song from their movie, The Song Remains the Same, released in late 1976, but recorded at Madison Square Garden in late July of 1973. It is around 27 minutes long. You should check it out. That would be a wonderful treat for you and us. ❤ Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Not a violin bow, but a cello bow. :) The story is a violin bow, the strings weren't strong enough for Jimmy, they kept breaking. And when you see him play it live, the bow is way too long to be a violin bow. :)
Led Zeppelin are the Rock Gods. Each member had their own talent. Led Zeppelin is the Best. Love seeing and hearing “New” Zeppelin listeners. Robert Plant was 17 when he and John Bonham, the best drummer in the world, joined and ended picking this band name and it was the idea of John Entwistle of the Who!! They were an American Blues loving band.

The tension built in this song by silent moments and rhythmic shifts is incredible.
Let me add...Zeppelin as a whole was creating music like this when nobody else was. Almost (not all,but many) every rock band in the 70's, 80's, and 90's were built on the backs of Zep.
True- yet I would add Helter Skelter had a similar feeling and that was a year before. Paul was doing metal.
I think Hendrix was definitely a catalyst for Led Zeppelin, as Page has waxed heavily on how mind blown he (and everyone in the UK scene) was blown away when the Experience started jamming there.
It seems Jimi was a heavy influence on the overall approach to song construction as well as the production that Page would certainly master and push well beyond the standards of the day.
It’s pretty evident in rock music offerings pre-Hendrix contrasted against post-Hendrix. In Page and Beck’s case just listen to the difference between Yardbirds and LZ, as well as Beck’s earliest post-Yardbirds (post-Hendrix) offerings with Rod Stewart and Faces.
Hendrix dipped into jazz with his amped up psychedelia, whereas Page tends to veer off into more Eastern influences as well as Caribbean, Cuban, and Jamaican stylings.
I was raised on Led Zeppelin. When I discovered the blues in my 20's, it felt like coming home. I didn't even know how good I had it until the 80's happened and this kind of rock gave way to electronically manipulated music. Which was good and had its place but wow I missed this stuff.

As for the drummer and his drumming, there's a reason that Led Zeppelin broke up after Jon Bonham (the drummer) died in 1980.

As a drummer myself, the song in itself is playable... but I think your buy me a coffee donation was getting at is this. Nobody can play this song with the FEEL that John Bonham approaches the music with. Everyone in the band is baring their souls in this track. Incredible song
It’s the same with Hendrix and others from that era, it’s the feel especially the lack of click tracking or auto tune which spoils the feel gained from the soul in the song.
Zeppelin has always been my favorite band. First album I ever bought was Houses of the Holy. I was 12 yrs old. I must've played it 10 times that weekend. I have every album Zep has made. Never ever get tired of them.

John Bonham was known as a master of "playing behind the beat," i.e. his backbeat (the snare on 2 and 4) is slightly retarded (timing-wise), but ONLY IN THE BEST WAY. In music, this is called the Swing or the Groove.
Yes, Danny Carey or most anyone (myself included) CAN play this song, and technically hit all the correct beats at the correct time... but NO ONE will EVER sound like Bonham (without straight-up copying him) because no one CONSISTENTLY hits behind the beat the way he did. LZ didn't even bother to continue when Bonzo died (on whose vomit? You can't really "dust" for vomit, you know).
I don't know, perhaps Bonzo's son Jason has the right genes to allow him to do something similar... he certainly had his dad there to teach him the trade as he was growing up. But I've only seen him when he played behind Ann and Nancy Wilson (of the excellent band, Heart) when they did STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN right in front of the surviving members of LZ at the Kennedy Center Honors some years ago... it was excellent, though. (I've wanted to marry Nancy Wilson since 1977, but no such luck, yet...)
The whole group is incredible.. and Robert Plant 's voice is mesmerising.. The best of the best.
You gotta listen to a whole concert and see the interaction of the band. This is why I love Zeppelin. There music is a mind captivating experience.

I love the call and response that Plant and Page did in several of their songs. Also that weird sound that you heard in that one part was Jimi Page using a bow on his guitar, I believe.

Ive always enjoyed the back and forth between Page and Plant, but I feel like a fool for only not connecting that during the same portion, Jones and Bonham are also playing off of each other, it creates a wonderful interplay that only just now occurred to me. No matter how much you love other bands remember this song came out in 1969. Thats before most of those other were born. Led Zeplin was first!

Led Zeppelin defies explanation when it comes to music. Their style and open willingness to experiment has no equal. Each time you listen to a song from their extensive catalog you are surprised. My favorite band by far. Thanks for the reaction.
