    The producer once said that Betty White was the show's secret weapon: no one else could tell these kinds of lies with such a straight face....

    I saw a taping of this show when I was about 15, Letterman was on it when he still had his daytime show and nobody knew who he was. Would LOVE to find some episodes from that taping. Buddy Hackett was the other celeb along with Betty White and Larry Hovis. They did a bit with a puppy and Hackett pretended it was a saxophone.

    Larry Hovis was one of the prisoners on Hogan's Heroes. He was also a co-producer of this game show with Ralph Andrews (not to be confused with Ralph Edwards).

    LOL Dick and Betty did the first season (first version) of Liar's Club when Rod Serling hosted it (posted here in TH-cam)!

    Love this version of The Liar's Club. One episode had Letterman and Dody Goodman---she had an object she said they put in horses...um, behinds to stop them from messing up the streets. The look on everyone's faces was hilarious!

    I thought I saw some Ludden back in the mid-80s in Chicago on early Saturday mornings.

    I knew that was a horn weight the second I saw it. I helped put a few of those on cattle when I was young.

    Notice David Letterman's overuse of the word "pants". That's been a habit of his for longer than I thought.

    I watched this show in the past, but I didn't know that Allen Ludden hosted it

    • @meyerj75
      @meyerj75 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably because the USA network aired just the Armstrong hosted version of the show from '74 and '76. Had the ratings been strong enough, they could have picked up Ludden's version as well. Instead, they replaced it with Play The Percentages.

    That first object? If I were a panelist, I'd have described it as a barbell collar (what holds the weights in place and keeps them from slipping off).

    I thought at one time Bill Cullen hosted this show.
    Then again, there was another game show I recall from Bill Cullen that aired later in the evening when I lived in Louisiana in 1978 or so. I recall there was some disco violin music that was the theme for the show.

      +SuperPat88 The Bill Cullen show you're thinking of was "The Love Experts" (theme song: Spring Rain by Silvetti). Bill didn't host Liars Club but he was a guest panelist.

    The show went from 4 to 3 contestants, budget cuts.

    I think this episode features the longest airing of the (long lost) fee plug music I've ever heard (from 8:45 to 9:43).

    Bill Armstrong was the original host on "Liar's Club".

    • @abcwatermark
      @abcwatermark 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +John Kleiner Actually, Rod Serling - yes, THAT Rod Serling - was the original host of Liars Club in 1969. (You can find the only 2 surviving episodes from his run here on TH-cam.)

    Were they playing with POINTS or DOLLARS?

    • @meyerj75
      @meyerj75 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 70s version used dollars but the 80s version settled on points to cut production costs that were expensive later on.

    I remember watching this as a kid. I thought it was the worst game show I had ever seen. Stiff, unfunny, slow-paced, cheap ($100 winnings?!)...and who the hell was Larry Hovis? Thanks for uploading it.

    Why are all the women contestants so docile and unenergetic?? You'd think they'd be a little more excited to be on a game show... And David Letterman acts exactly the same! But what was he famous for in 78?

    • @Bigbadwhitecracker
      @Bigbadwhitecracker 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      nothing much except for comedy writing and his own stand up but someone was trying to give him a break. It worked out for him eventually. Every time I he him from this era doing game shows he looks like he really hates being there, not the people he is with but just game shows in general but they were most certainly paying his bills at the time.

    • @helenmikkelsen6629
      @helenmikkelsen6629 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Letterman was there because of Allen Ludden. Allen saw potential in him to be in show business and invited him on various game shows to be "discovered".
