  • Chief Stephan Kasprzyk walks us through the TOWNLINE Fire station in the suburbs of Buffalo, NY. Not only do they have an impressive station, they also house a full-functional High Rise training center capable of LIVE BURNS and smoke machine operations. Very Impressive! Townline FD generously opens its facilities to the County, neighboring Fire Companies, and law enforcement at no charge. The suburbs of Buffalo NY are looking for more volunteers and I encourage you to check out the Townline Fire Department. Townline FD has multiple trained personnel ready to teach you everything you need to know. No experience is needed. Stop by and meet these exceptional people for yourself.
Townline FD just celebrated its 101st anniversary assuring you, this department is doing things right. They cannot do what they do without the help of the community, so please consider stopping by and becoming part of the team as a volunteer. You might not be ready to volunteer, but at the very least, see what they offer.

I know I can sleep at night knowing I’ll be safe and so will my property with guys and departments like these surrounding me. These guys are the real deal. These volunteers work on top of their obligations to keeping the community safe. A lot of them work full time plus overtime in the trades doing real, physical work too. Outstanding citizens. I think all volunteers should receive great tax incentives at the very least to reward their contributions and dedication to their communities.

I grew up in the firehouse. Became a 4th generation fireman at age 16 and just recently took a temporary retirement. Learned a lot at the dinners and such over the years. Everything from how to make change to how to wash a lot of dishes and set up rooms and plan large events.

@@HeroesNextDoor And it won't be a second too soon when you eventually get the opportunity.
Like it or not, electrification is the future of the automobile, yet fire apparatus manufacturers have focused more on implementing EV technology in the vehicles they offer than addressing the unique challenges first responders face when responding to incidents involving the consumer EVs already present on roadways across the world. Neither have consumer EV manufacturers designed their offerings with the first responder in mind; instead, the latter are left to figure out how not let an EV kill them while doing their best to save the life of the person trapped in it.
Sadly, firefighting abounds with examples of emerging risks that weren't taken seriously beforehand and every meaningful advance in firefighter safety bears the ghost of a brothers or sisters who fell in the line of duty confronting it. We're lucky that an EV hasn't directly caused a LODD yet, but it's only a matter of time.
[EDIT: For those interested, you can read the NTSB report regarding the safety risks to first responders confronting BEV fires here: www.ntsb.gov/safety/safety-studies/Documents/SR2001.pdf ]

Electric fires can generally be dealt with by the equipment firefighters already carry, just applied slightly differently.

i know the danish firefighters have a new rig for it, its basecaliy a truck with a big container on it, full of water, and they use their crane to drop the burning car into it, since it can be hours to put out a electric car fire

If I had to wager a guess--and it is exactly that--because a truck that met the department's needs was already sitting on the lot at their local Chevy dealer. It happened to be maroon instead of red, but could be purchased that day with whatever incentives GM was offering for Silverados already in dealer inventories, saving the department both money and time.
