  • In this episode of Station Cribs on Heroes Next Door, we explore the rich history and modern operations of Star Hose Company / Port Allegany Station 3. Founded on November 16, 1885, a small group gathered in the office of O.L. Snyder to organize a hose company to serve the community. Their first major project was to construct a firehouse, which was quickly completed and cost just $289.48. On January 4, 1886, the first meeting was held in the hose rooms where Citizens Bank now stands.
The company's charter was granted on September 21, 1886, and Star Hose Company officially began its continued service to the community. Over the years, the company faced many challenges and made many improvements. They purchased their first hose cart, and by 1892, they were able to buy a lot on West Mill Street for a new fire hall. In 1894, the new City Building was constructed, featuring a garage for the carts, a hose tower, and social rooms for firemen. It also housed offices, council chambers, and a jail.
The company's headquarters remained in the City Building until 1957 when they built the present structure on Maple Street. This building was added on to in 1983. The Star Hose Company / Port Allegany Station 3 continues to serve the community with passion and pride, and their dedication to their vehicles is evident in their well-maintained fleet. One of their vehicles was even showcased at FDIC in Indiana when it was new. Despite not having a large station, the people who run Star Hose Company / Port Allegany Station 3 take tremendous pride in their work and continue to be an important part of the community's history. Join us as we take a closer look at this historic and active firehouse.

Don’t ignore, and push aside, the retired folks. They are a wealth of knowledge. They can still be very useful to the agency and still can have the desire to help. This is a great house. I love seeing the all volunteer houses.

Absolutely not pushing them aside. They love showing up and hanging with them. Not sure why after editing it came across differently

Nice station, and good to hear they're looking to the future planning. Some nice apparatus. Didn't realise you had to do so many takes, for the intro, thought it was all one take. Lol. Take care love the videos.

In germany u can be a junior firefighter with 10 years and go on calls when ur 16 in some federal state when ur 18 and as well some houses have a kids department where u can start with 6 years and learn about firefighter work.

This dept is literally about an hour from me....these small depts are usually very tight knit which isnt a bad thing...the one im a fire police lieutenant at is literally made up of a main station and a sub station and around 12 very active members and occasionally a few more do show up

Amazing station! You should reach out to the North Haven, CT fire department. I live in North Haven and would love to have a station cribs and station rigs of the fire department. 😊

We don’t do cold calls. They need to send an invite. If you want to help stop by there and tell them about us and get them to invite us. We are considering heading that direction on the 2nd week in June. So have to move fast.

@@HeroesNextDoor I’m a westerner, personally I think it’s just more maintenance and a waste of tax payers money, to add on they don’t really help with visibility compared to other things, also down here they are not considered tradition since we never really used them, but also like with leather helmets and that tradition we used metal helmets in the early ages, compared to the east which used leathers. But yeah personally I’m just a by the book person, I don’t believe adding extra things that don’t really help with safety at all, I’m for one that likes standard lighting.

To add on though I understand the huge differences across the west coast to the east coast in pretty much everything, it’s almost like they are different countries.
