    i really love how mr patina restores items. i like that they still have dents and imperfections that i think enhances our appreciation of the workmanship of the item (and the restorer).

      Yes, I think it is right too to keep a balance between restoring some damage that would otherwise further deteriorate the item or which was caused by oxydation or something like that and wanting to fix every single notch that would have been inherent to the producing of such items at the times they were produced. Respecting their souls, so to speak, by protecting and caring but not by robbing them of their identities.

    Superb job! My mum had a very similar iron in the 1950’s with the plug coming from the top, black handle and the same heat setting switch. They must have been made like that world wide because I am from Australia. One thing I like about your restorations is that you wash things before you start! A lot of restorers don’t do this and I often wonder what kind of germs might be present. Thank you for an informative and riveting channel. 🤗🇦🇺

    My absolute biggest pet peeve with any restoration video is when they work on 95% of a restore then leave one area with rust or dirt because it's difficult to correct or already "good enough". So you taking the time to dig out and replace the heating coil makes me immensely happy.

    Hurrah, it's Sunday and a new upload! Thank you for it. Great job again. Much worthier of your hard work than my brand new frying pan which my father had burned to a crisp as he opted for reheating his lunch himself for once and did not use the microwave but my new pan for some reason. And of course, he completely forgot about it until the house was full of smoke. I've had to spend 45 minutes sanding it today, after nothing else would work. I'd rather have restored an antique piece instead! Ah well, I'll leave that till next week-end then.

    • @samuelfellows6923
      @samuelfellows6923 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      🤭😧 - a fire hazard, your father left the hob - did he fall asleep, or went into the garden to talk to his dearest, and I assume the smoke alarm sounded, warning you and him to what would have eventually turned into a fire.

    • @auChevalierRed
      @auChevalierRed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@samuelfellows6923 My father was always a hazard by cooking, but never to that point , it was more culinary-wise, until my mother passed away. Now he becomes completely forgetful at times, moving into his own world and not even hearing the fire alarm I had installed nor smelling the fumes and the burned food. He simply put the pan on and went back to his bedroom to "talk to my mother" and forgot all about the pan as he realized she couldn't be in the bedroom either. As I was out, I did not notice it until I came back and luckily enough the added security system on the cooking element had worked as a switch off as soon as the food in flame had hit the cooking plates. He never cooks these days, after he had the smoke alarm going off in the middle of the night once and realized that had I not been a light sleeper he could have killed me too, but he had obviously forgotten that yesterday. I hope he won't do it again, for with the confinement, I can't even get another security switch to replace it. It worked but got damaged by the flames.

      @patertuus8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I liked this too. Did you use any spacer or shim to prevent the heating coil pushing through the cement thereby causing a potential short? Or was the aggregate in the cement enough to prevent that from happening? All electrical work I do I'm all about insulation and grounding. I love your work BTW, just want to learn your process. Thanks

    Nice job! Particularly with the cement and coil. I wondered how you would replace it or leave it.

      I’ve gotta be honest, I thought many times about leaving or replacing, but I think the restoration wouldn’t have been complete if I left it. On the other hand I think it’s pretty interesting for you to see how it works 🙂

    Beautiful job as always. I wish you would've kept the wood handle natural.
    now I know how a iron works.
    Thank you

    OH MAYYY GOODNESS!! You have reached your peak, you did everything... you used every single technique, you used new ones you have not used before, you worked on n electrical appliance, and most if all, you did a great job!! You have set the bar higher even for my mechanics! Continue the great work in making us happy and fixing old tools and stay safe! This one has been jaw- droppingly good!
    (EDIT) I am not sure if you got a new camera or your skills are better but those new close ups and everything in general is much cleaner looking!!! :-) That gentle brush is quite welcoming, too

    I discovered Rowenta irons about 25 years ago, and I will never own any other iron again - they are amazing!

    Awesome video, as always. Be careful when you remove old casting because there may be asbestos! Also, how often do you need to re-watch your own footage to remember how to reassemble your projects?!

    Excellent video! My only quibble is that this kind of non-steam iron would have been used with an ironing cloth - that is, another piece of almost wet thin linen cloth (old tea towels are ideal) would have been laid over the top of the cloth/garment to be ironed. The heat from the iron would then have generated a thin layer of steam which would have done the hard work of smoothing the fabric. This is only way to ensure that the base of the iron would remain unstained by soap/starch residue from the cloth being ironed. If one doesn't use an ironing cloth with these old non-teflon based irons, a layer of burned soap/starch quickly builds up which has to be scrubbed off with steel wool and can ruin the iron's base. Going by the pre-restoration pictures, something of this kind has clearly happened which has made the iron useless and thus it was discarded.

    Muy buen trabajo. Increíble. (Me hubiera gustado mas si al mango de madera lo barnizaba)-
