1920 Broken Ratcheting Screwdriver Restoration | Mister Patina
In this Video im restoring an old Ratcheting Screwdriver. These Screwdrivers were made between 1891 and 1945, i know that because its got a little mark "DRGM" - this is the mark for the german patents between 1891 and 1945.
When i received this ratcheting screwdriver, it has a malfunction. When ratching it right ways, eversthing is okay. By locking it, the screwdriver turned right way aswell. When turning it left ways, it did barely nothing. Time to repair and restore this old beauty!
I started with disassembling the screwdriver, i had to destroy the handle for it, because the whole mechanism was glued into the wooden handle. After taking the handle of, i could see a lot of rust and broken nickel plating. After disassembling the body, i could find two ratchet plates which are needed for the function. One of the plates was bent, so the error was found. I continued by pressing the small gear off the tipshaft by putting it in the lathe, without clamping it, and pushed it out with the drill. After that the disassembling was done and i could inspect all the parts. Every part needed to be restored. I started the restoration by rebending the plate, which was an easy job. The main body part was bent aswell, so i rebended it aswell. To get the maintip perfectly sanded later, i had to mill an adapter for it on the lathe mill, which fitted perfectly. Now it was time for sandblasting the parts, nearly every part got sandblasted in the sandblasting cabinet. After sandblasting i wanted to give the parts a smooth surface by wirebrushing them. So i wirebrushed all parts instead of the housing, because i sanded it afterwards. After the wirebrushing i blued the parts by heating them up to around 300 degrees and quenching them in oive oil. This process hardens the parts, makes them rustproof and gives them a nice black finish. Now is was able to sand the Housing part and the tipshaft. I sanded them with sanding paper from 180 to 320 grit and gave them a nice finish with scotchbrite. After that, the tip got smoothened on an oilstone with 400 and 1000 grit. The last step before plating the parts was polishing, to give the parts a nice shine. I used demineralized water, a nickel plating solution, pure nickel strips and a power source to let the nickel plating magic happen. After plating the parts, i stirred them in demineralized water again, dried them and gave them a final highgloss polish. All metal parts are ready now, last step was making a new wooden handle. I found a good part of wood in my shop and put it in the lathe mill, to mill it in rough shape. After that i filed and sanded it into the final shape and drilled the holes for fitting the metal mechanism later. I finished the handle by rubbing it with wood oil, to keep it protected and nice looking (I had to reshape the handle offcam later, because i wasnt happy with the final shape).
All parts are ready for reassembling, i put the ratcheting mechanism back together, which was really tricky, and greased all the parts with my new grease gun, which was gifted to me by "Not terrible Restorations - by Dr. Beer" - thanks Bro! The last step was gluing the screwdriver part into the wooden handle with a little wood glue.
The final test shows, that the ratcheting screwdriver is working perfectly again and looks nearly brand new.

Perfect job on the metal parts! Very impressive. The original handle was so beautiful, though, I shed a tear for it. Bombay Mahogany stain would have been a beautiful touch for the replacement handle, maybe even a little decorative knurling?

As always, enjoyed your renovations. Here, however, I don’t think that wood glue would bond wood to metal with any great strength - wood to wood, yes, but it isn’t designed for any metal bonding. Epoxy resin should be used for a tool like this which will have a heavy turning force applied when in use. Also, a nice touch would have been to retain the original colour of the handle.

Спасибо, очень интересно. А чего же не протестировали восстановленный инструмент? Было бы любопытно глянуть каков он в деле. Оригинальная рукоятка смотрится лучше новой.

Мне тоже старая ручка понравилась больше новой! И цветом и формой

Great job. I had one of those many years ago.
It had a longer handle, the one you have almost looks like someone might have cut the handle down.

Wow that's some great effort you put into one simple little tool, nice job. But, er, sorry 'bout this and all, but is the new handle crooked?

I remember my father using one of these in the 1960s before Phillips cut took over and modernised the whole screw business.
