I play in a church praise team and I play in a gigging country band as well. I've never heard any objections from anyone at church. In fact one of the pastor's parents have come out to the 50+ dance event I've played at. My praise team leader has a sound system and does sound for various groups in the area. His wife is a backup singer for a local group. Neither of them have had anyone criticize them either. I get paid for gigging with the band but none of us get paid for the praise team nor would I want to. There are many volunteers who do all sorts of activities for the church. For example Lois and Bill open that church and setup coffee urns, muffins, cookies, etc. faithfully every Sunday. When I arrive for preservice practise, it's ready to "help myself". They do this without pay as well. Guest pastors usually get some money for travel expenses, they are on salary at their home church. Volunteering for praise team is me doing my small part to help edify those in attendance.
I realize this is a thing, but I'm thankful I've never experienced this myself, nor have the people I know. If anything, people in my church community have been very supportive of my "extracurricular" activities on Fridays or Saturdays.
As a Christian musician that plays volunteer at church (for only Spiritual blessings, no pay) when I play secular music in a bar for pay, I am a light shining into dark places. I don’t drink, don’t cuss, choose my setlist carefully, and lead by example. Doctors need to go where the sick people are. Inevitably someone says “there’s something different about you”, and then it’s game-on for Jesus. ❤
Good video my brother..but I don't think it answers the question stated on the video..I came to hear your point of view about non Christians musicians playing in worship/church...it could be a situation that they get paid or not for it. Hope you make the video soon. You just got a subscriber. Blessings from a music Pastor in Cayman Islands...who also plays jazz and classical outside the Church 😁🙏🏽
I'm 60 years old and have been playing in church for 50 years neither wanting nor expecting pay. I have nothing against church musicians who want to be paid. The thing is, if you're playing at a church that isn't in a position or just doesn't pay musicians, why are you complaining? There are plenty of other churches that pay. In some churches the musicians are on the payroll. I also don't have a problem with exploring other styles of music. On my TH-cam channel I play all r&b. I have another channel that's all gospel. I have another channel that's all Christmas music. So there are ways to explore other genres without compromising your Christian principles. When it comes to playing in clubs were there is smoking and alcohol, I'd never do it. It puts your health at risk and gives that lifestyle your stamp of approval. If you're fine with that, do you. But you shouldn't hold it against a church if they have standards for their musicians. Again, if their standards are too much for you clearly that's not the church you wish to be at. Calling people hypocritical and super spiritual just because they have high standards ironically makes you sound like the people you're criticizing.
U r right, my younger brother was called into the ministry but he doesn't know either to pay his worship team or not to.Thank you very much for telling me this, now I have a better understanding of this situation
i'm a solo country recording artist and am in seminary. my craft is music and giving a word in song. imo an artist taking care of their family is doing what we are commanded to do. secular or spiritual as long as it is pleasing to God should never be judged by the song, but by actions as we are so commanded. Please don't stop these videos on these matters... I have fought to stand on these positions to a stand still as a music director in a 3rd world country and believe me its 100x worse out here than your country... I am glad some person overseas sees these matters from what ought to be the ideal perspective... Cheers!
Its a million percent worse. I live in Trinidad. Many of the musicians who play for free have their other paid jobs. So they play for free. I am not going to say but you know how they sound. Then a professional musician joins the church and is expected to play with the worship team for free. Non professionals no direction no format, just basically a jam session. Playing most songs in key of C also not playing the correct chords. Simplifying everyrhing because thats all they can do and they feel that all of us are one family and we all should play for free. But professional musicians do not have another job like the people who play in the worship team. Dont even start me with the sound people. They are church members who are not professionals. Then you as a professional try to work with them. Its a struggle mentally and physically. You play for some services, they go live, its horrible. Your friends laugh at you but also tell you that they feel your pain. We are backward in this country. However I must say that NOT all musicians and churches. But most are.
Terence Thank You sir this video is so so good!! Perhaps maybe the church can also have teaching about the music ministry. So that as musicians we can understand the power of music in the church and outside of the church. Hello. I really do appreciate your Podcast Video teachings. We are ALL God’s work. I believe musicians should be paid. Period. Love you man. 🎺🎙️
I can see how this can be a touchy topic in some churches. Have you tried the question response to their question, "Can you do the music for our event?" I usually ask, "What's your budget for your music program for this event?" This is the start of the negotiation process. Their response will give you a chance to inform and educate and possibly, build bridges. If they say, we don't have a budget for the music, he explanation you can offer is "There isn't much I can do for you at that price. I do this work for a living, like you do, and I rely on some degree of remuneration for my time and effort." Here's the bridge building part. Then you can say, "If you can come up with a budget, I can offer you my 'Friends and Family" discount.' The door either opens or shuts at that point. Negotiations conclude or they query further as to how much the Friends and Family Discount will cost them. If they start to rail and get preachy about your response trying to invoke guilt, your simple response is, "I don't think you are in much of a position to comment on my degree of spiritual commitment to God. As a result, how I use my gifts is not really in your domain to comment on. So we are not going to go there" Further scriptural comments if needed relate to "isn't there something about not judging others and removing the log in your eye first and finally, Justice, paying the worker for his work." Hope those suggestions help. BTW, I played in a church choir for years, for free.
Not only that but the Bible actually says ‘Whatever you do, do it with all of your heart as for the Lord and not man.’ Also there is this idea of being a good steward which means pursuing excellence in your vocation. Also providing for your household is a good thing. God created music and Christians should be able to do their job as being salt and light in the marketplace as anyone in any vocation that is a Christian is called to do.
I once had a music director give me the cold treatment after I asked whether I would be paid. (This director had a reputation for being, shall we say, a not-so-nice and not-so-moral person.)
I agree with you, as for home base church that can be a difficult choice. I think any church using volunteer musicians could have a line on the offering envelope for praise team thanks offering. Why not I say ? 😏
Great video. I've played in Christian bands and rarely gotten paid. It is honorable to play for the Lord and share your gifts, but doesn't scripture also say a worker is worthy of his wages? Many don't realize the amount of money you have invested in instruments and gear or the countless hours you have put in honing your craft. In one band, we played for a couple of hours in the hot sun for an outreach. We didn't expect to, or ask to get paid. But I gotta say, we couldn't even get a free hot dog! No kidding. Just saying. Another 2 plus hour gig, all the coffee we could drink! Some churches think worship leaders and musicians should not get paid but do it because they want to serve the Lord. It's a lot of work being a worship leader and definitely worth some compensation. On another note, I don't think it's wrong to play other types of music for pay. (I have). You do have to be careful though. There are a lot of temptations out there. Just be careful. Thanks for the video bro.
Yes, the Scripture does indeed say that. What a lot of these leaders are doing is UNETHICAL, not Scriptural, and just plain WRONG (and I'm a GOD_FEARING woman myself)!
Terrance is right. If being a professional highly skilled musician was so easy and obtainable everyone would be one. It's a rare job and should be paid as such.
The money thing Church musicians need to be payed The other thing about being a Church musician is that its ministry and in ministry we follow Biblical standards thats why as a church musician i dont play secular gigs because i know what my Bible says about secularity
Musicians are not alone in this situation. In my community, churches are notorious for unethical mooching behavior. One time when our church needed a new fence we couldn’t find a contractor to work with us. Contractors all told us they no longer did work for churches because too many of their colleagues had bad experiences with churches. They all knew other contractors who had quoted a price, did the work on a handshake, and when they presented the invoice the church refused to pay, saying that the contractor should donate their work because “it’s for the Lord.” Great witness, eh?
@@TerenceFisher1 - I have some even crazier stories, because I have been doing church and parachurch ministry work for a long time. I personally know a pastor who tried to stiff a law firm that he had hired after the legal work was done. They were NOT amused. He paid up.
I'm a GOD_FEARING woman and I DEFINITELY believe this! I've served up under many pastors and leaders who felt ENTITLED to someone's time, labor, expertise, and don't forget MONEY and used that (it's for the LORD)! At the end of the day what they're doing is NOT BIBLICAL! It's wrong and GOD is NOT pleased!
Whats even more hysterical local big box churches push tithing without disclosing any financials at all. simply put before I commit to a church tithing I need to know are they good stuarts of the funds already received!
In the Old Testament there were requirements for musicians to play in the temple. First they had to be of the Levite tribe, they had to be SKILLFUL and teachable. They were paid to play because the Levites received a tithe from the temple and were led by a chief musician who was responsible for directing and teaching the musicians and singers. I personally refuse to play at churches unless I am compensated. The pastors are all paid, youth leaders are paid, janitors are paid, groundskeepers are paid.....so why do churches expect musicians to work for free?
Here's my 2 cents. I play guitar I feel it's a gift from God. My only thing about playing music out side of the church just make sure lyrics are not evil. And yes we should get paid. I've been working on my craft for 31 years. I'm worth my weight. I think why they get offended by us wanting to be paid is they want us to serve. But people are paid at churches so we should get paid
I agree! I am a church musician (a vocalist actually) but also working secular. The only thing I pay attention to is that the content of the songs does not conflict with my beliefs. I am an ordinary musician who however is a follower of Jesus Christ.
I have had the same thing happen to me. Of course, it was my fault for not negotiating a payment prior to the revival. I learned a valuable lesson. Never assume anything.
Off the top, Yes, pro musicians should be paid. Period. That being said, As a musician and artist, I understand from both sides. Here’s a logical way to look at it. What IS being a church musician supposed to be? Better yet, what IS a person who says they are a Christian supposed to be? If God is just a religion to a person, or just a “good person” morality box to check once a week, then I can see why jumping back and forth can be viewed as trivial. However, Music is indeed spiritual, that’s why one has to be careful jumping back and forth so much. (And no I’m not talking about playing jazz or orchestra ect). What I’m saying is, pay check aside, what kind of spiritual atmosphere are you helping to conjure up? And before you say it’s not that deep, no, it IS that deep. It’s no sense playing in Church when the night before, you helped create an environment that is helping people be pushed further from wanting to know who God is. It’s bigger than money, bigger than even religion. Church folk need to chill in the super judgmental. Nonetheless, there is indeed a standard when wanting to play in church. We don’t respect preachers who don’t practice what they preach so why should that be any different for the church musician? Have fun with your skill, but use wisdom. Godly wisdom
Some people are called to the church and some are called to the marketplace. If you have a pastoral calling as well as music than you are a music minister. But I would argue that 90 percent of people are called to the marketplace. In other words, secular music… and as Christians we are called to be salt and light while we are working in the marketplace. There seems to me a great need to shine salt and light in the marketplace.
My question is why do some pastor have secular musicians in their ministry when they don’t have that church sound that flow, even tho that musician is jazz musician and they play in a since like they at a jazz gig
As a christian and professional musician and someone who makes a living playing secular music, while i think church musicians should get paid because i know how much work it is... I actually believe that churchs should get as far away from modern worship music and fashion of it as set buy mega churches. Its part of why churches are becoming less godly and sacred, which is leading to the downturn of the world
How the musician be held accountable for anything if they are not being compensated? What's to stop them from not sleeping with everyones woman or man in the congregation? What's to stop them from conning church members or coming to church hung over every Sunday morning? If the church wants the best they need to pay up.
Money shouldn’t be the Motivation for not doing these things in church. It should be a sense of “hey I’m playing Gods music, I should be trying to live the right way”. As far as money, it depends on the musician. Was it agreed at the beginning that hey we are hiring you as a pro to -fill in the blank-?, then yea, they should be paid. 100 percent. But that musician should have in their mind a sense of why they are doing this and not just for the finances.
It's funny, doctors, lawyers, cooks, or anyone else will draw a salary for their labor. I've been a church musician for many years. I also have a graduate degree and I do not do anything for free. As a matter of fact if they contact me there's a contract involved. And if they find my policies of business offensive, they can always call somebody else..
OMG have I been blind. I'm an atheist. I like gospel music and have often played for Sunday services. At the church I've never hidden my atheism nor brought it up in conversation. Its just something I don't talk about in church. Anyway, no one has ever asked me to play for free. I've never donated during the service, as that would be silly as an employee on any job. I've have been asked to join churches, but I just say no. I find it disrespectful that church musicians are forced to endure the kind of pressures you're describing. While there are a few churches where I've worked every Sunday for months, I never agree to more than one service at a time. (Typically I'm just filling in for the regular guy whose out sick or on another gig). How is it possible for musicians to dedicate themselves to religious groups that treat them like crap. I doubt that this goes on at the white churches. I've never played there, so I don't know.
I doubt it's that big of a problem at the predominantly White mega churches, but rest assured, at the small ones, ain't nobody getting paid, except maybe the leader or an organist.
That’s interesting! But I would say this def happens everywhere regardless of race in my experience. How do people react when you tell them you’re an atheist for church? Just asking cause your comment says you’ve never hidden it. I think about doing Sunday gigs but I’m pretty secular and agnostic
@@noodlehoppa7212 Most people know. I don't have any close church friends and pretty much just stay to myself. I sometimes hear the term "Ill pray for you" from strangers. ( I respond "thanks" I think it makes them feel good.). In short, I do whatever to avoid bringing attention to myself. I pretend to be grateful when people say I'll get better if I keep coming. I know its silly but I know they really mean me well, so I never challenge

I actually believe that churchs should get as far away from modern worship music and fashion of it as set buy mega churches. Its part of why churches are becoming less godly and sacred, which is leading to the downturn of the world
Churches should pay more to have music. The indoctrination and brainwashing is problematic.
Yes Sir - Truth!
Thats why I'm not a religious person...
I agree with you on this one
When you say secular/ church musicians are you talking about, members of the church/ believers?
It's funny, doctors, lawyers, cooks, or anyone else will draw a salary for their labor. I've been a church musician for many years. I also have a graduate degree and I do not do anything for free. As a matter of fact if they contact me there's a contract involved. And if they find my policies of business offensive, they can always call somebody else..
Sure brother anytime
The Bible clearly states that the temple musicians are supposed to be paid enough to live on.
Is the pastor/minister/priest getting paid?
Been there
Done that
Phil keaggy, Larry Norman
But, the pastor gets paid... why can't you...
David played for Saul.
Did David play musick unfit to worship God with?
OMG have I been blind. I'm an atheist. I like gospel music and have often played for
Sunday services.
It goes on in EVERY nationality! (Speaking from experience and I'm a GOD_FEARING woman)
Ohh brother thank your serving
But hasn't being in church at least compelled you once to turn to the Lord coz you'll have fun in salvation
👀🫣🤣!!
DOC!
Ask JESUS HIMSELF !
We are Not to mix the Holy with the world
We are called to be Separate !!!
As a Christian musician that plays at church (for only Spiritual blessings, no pay) when I play secular music in a bar for pay, I am a light shining into dark places. I don’t drink, don’t cuss, choose my setlist carefully, and lead by example. Doctors need to go where the sick people are. Inevitably someone says “there’s something different about you”, and then it’s game-on for Jesus. ❤
99% of musicians are not willing to take Yeshusa at his Word! Matthew 16:24-26.
I wonder if that preacher expects to gas up his car for free since he’s doing “god’s work”?
Christian fascism...😊
