- Thor: The Dark World was an inevitability, off the moderate success of the first film in 2011 and The Avengers in 2012 it made sense to reteam Chris Harmsworth's God Of Thunder, Tom Hiddleston's Loki and a reluctant Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. This time it's Dark Elves! And multiple dimensions sort of! And a red swirling blood tornado! Thanks for watching our Caravan Of Garbage review.

Genuine trivia : They had to recreate Stonehenge as Marvel couldn't get permission to film there. Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. It consists of an outer ring of standing stones, each around 13 feet high and weighing around 25 tons. Whilst we still don't know WHY it was built we do know for certain that it was originally called "Blue Harvest".

Pretty much the only thing I enjoyed from this movie was the interactions between Loki and Thor. Hell I'd go so far as to say this movie is the biggest reason why Loki was popular enough to get his own show.

Want to know the real reason for Christopher Eccleston's tour of the States after Doctor Who?
Series 1 of Who was a nightmare to film, particularly during the first filming block. This put heavy strain on the cast and crew, and Eccleston ultimately left on principle because he felt the Executives (Russell T Davies included) had not done enough to try and sort things out. However, he did agree with RTD to keep his departure a secret until after the finale had aired, and vowed to protect the show by not talking about its production issues.
Unfortunately, his leaving was leaked early in Series 1's run. In a bid to beat the press, the BBC released a hastily-written statement announcing his departure, citing Eccleston's alleged fear of being typecast. Eccleston was NOT consulted on this statement, and feared he wouldn't be hired for other projects because of the presumption that he wouldn't stick around for more than one series. He attempted to sue the BBC for the false statement attributed to him, but this only resulted in him being blacklisted by the corporation, after being effectively blacklisted by everybody else due to said statement.
So the series of US films and shows Eccleston hated being a part of was down to not being able to work in his own country, all because the BBC used him as a scapegoat for his own departure from Doctor Who. In the years since, Eccleston has come clean about it as the show isn't in any danger from him talking now, and what evidence there is seems to support his version of events.
Also with all the articles coming out about Mickey and Captain Jack probably didn't help...

I'm always baffled by the apparent hours of skill/prosthetics/makeup that turned Eccleston into albino Eccleston with Spock ears.
Anyway, the film is fine.
This weeks bit of “changing the timeline” works as a good way of just throwing whatever year or false release date for anything every at the wall and it working in context with the video
The blood tornado thing reminds me of the rejected plan for the final fight in the first Blade movie, where Deacon Frost was going to turn into a blood tornado with Stephen Dorff's head sticking out of it or whatever, but the CGI looked terrible (it being 1998), so they went with what we got.
I think they actually did a test showing and found that the audience didn't like the villain being replaced with a CGI blood tornado for the big fight.
That's cool, but did you know that while they were figuring out the CGI, the original working title for Blade was Blue Harvest?
The first "Blade" film was utter trash. So much so that I was actually astonished when "Blade II" turned out to be actually a decent flick, that I still enjoy watching from time to time. I actually consider "Blade II" to be the "Blade I" that we should have originally gotten.

*This movie was by far the best when it came to Loki's character.*
We see his father be an asshole, his insecurities, his bond with his mother, his ways of coping, the events that lead him to actually growing as a person, and the result of such growth in the very end. Say you want about this film, but (especially including the deleted scenes) it's the most psychologically adult of the Thor films. People don't praise it enough for basically single-handedly carrying all the character development that will then be somewhat stifled in Ragnarok. And being the absolute best Loki film.
Loki's character development in this is great, but it's a side plot. Meanwhile the main plot, the dark elves being awoken by the revealing of the long lost Aether, they decided the best way to have that happen was to have Jane Foster literally just wander into it in the most random and nonsensically contrived way possible. I wish the Loki stuff was attached to a better movie.
On the contrary, I think Loki's "good guy turn" in Ragnarok was made possible by the resolution of Dark World. Because it's kind of the moment that the two brothers first come to a genuine understanding/affection for each other, instead of hating each others' guts. Ragnarok sort of continues Loki's character evolution from "Villain" to "Mischievous Scamp." An evolution that unfortunately pays off with Loki's untimely death by the hands of Thanos, in Endgame.
@@jacob4920 I agree that Loki becomes a fully "good guy" character in Ragnarok, and it's pretty decently done, but he does seem to regress at some points of the movie for no meaningful reason, and his growth isn't half as significant or taken half as seriously as it is in the Dark World. I do *love* the other parts of Ragnarok, but when it came to Loki's character the Dark World wins by a mile.

Loki pretty much saves this movie. This was before Thor was an interesting character. Ragnarok, IW and Endgame made his character a lot better and interesting.
Having re-watched the MCU movies this year (just finished Endgame) I can confidently say that Thor: Dark World doesn't get the love it deserves. There are clearly better films, for sure, but I think it gets way too much hate than it needs

@@okamiwolf250 For me personally, it's a tough call. The two that come to mind the most is Iron Man 3 & Captain Marvel. Things is both have great ideas/concepts, just execution is lacking. Marvel moreso because of the amensia part. How am I supposed to care about a character if SHE doesn't even know who she is? With Iron Man 3, there was some good ideas, just the "false face Mandarin" seemed a bit off combined with Tony's character growth (both ok by themselves, but not great together)
There's definitely worse MCU films. Incredible Hulk, Captain Marvel, both of the Ant Man films.
The design of Asgard and the Dark Elves is pretty neat.
But it is a very boring film.
@@jimjam7928 Agreed. Hulk I didn't mind too much, but is also a VERY different movie compared to the others. With those you listed, I don't hate them, but I do have different reasons for not liking them. I have a weird soft spot for AntMan mainly because I like Paul Rudd lol
The plot literally only happens because Jane bumps into a group of kids and follows them into an abandoned building and finds a magical load-bearing concrete pillar with the plot inside. People should like what they like, but how is nobody commenting on how bad this is as the central plot for a movie? Like, the dark elves entire plan was "meh, I guess it will show up sometime".
I really like the creative hammer flight move where he catches it on the way past the balcony and does a little twirling jump, James should change the timeline so there's more stuff like that instead of just doing a real fast hammer spin and then flying away
I remember loving this movie after coming out of the theater. I still do. But not as much. It’s watchable now at most. But seeing Chris Evans when Loki does his trick made my theater go nuts. It was just cool to see how the universe was going after the first avengers film. Honestly the main concern to me was the villain problem. But even that wasn’t that crazy. Dude, that monster was and still is intimidating as hell. And also the fact that even though I’m 2 minutes into the video, But a lot of things that occur in this movie really do set up the future.
I have seen films far, far worse than this Thor sequel. Even in the MCU, I would rather watch this than a second watch of The Eternals. I also didn't rate Black Panther film as highly as the media did 🤔
@@andys8483 there were so many stupid plot points in black panther it's insane how some people just can't hear a word against it. It came out at a time where having a majority black cast won them awards. I found the movie barely watchable when I heard they win awards I just had to shake my head in despair

@@himynameis3664 Eh, I disagree. When it initially dropped there was definitely a lot of hype. Now that the dust is settled most people regard it as a decent marvel movie. Nowadays people go out of their way to tell you just how much they don’t like it. Which is where I feel like most arguments around that movie start now.
Two things everybody misses about this movie: 1) when they complain about Malekith , they don't realize he's the villain, but not the antagonist. He is a threat, but not the challenge. *Odin* is the antagonist. It is Odin's willingness as king to do whatever is necessary to win, whether it's sacrificing soldiers or imprisoning Jane. His actions show Thor what being king requires, and Thor has to face that in himself as heir to the throne. 2) Thor's character does grow and change. Thor has a really interesting development arc in the movies. In the 1st movie, we see him working toward being king, but he lacks humility and compassion. He learns this on earth and grows because of it. By the end of the 2nd film, he's seen what he'd have to do to be a king, and he backs away. He would rather keep his honor and not rule. In Ragnarok, he learns that there is more than one way to sacrifice yourself to protect your people. He accepts the mantle of king even though he personally doesn't want it. Infinity War and Endgame show him that sometimes it's not enough and even when he takes revenge on Thanos, he finds himself without purpose.
Solid points, but I was really expecting to get Blue Harvested the entire time I was reading this.
You know what doesn't get discussed enough in this movie? At the end, Thor needs to use his giant hammer to hammer giant nails into the Earth to save the day. Whether intentional or not, the shape of those... weather rods or whatever they were will always make them look like giant nails and that, is funny.
No lies. You two are such a terrific comedy duo. I laugh more at this podcast than probably anything all week. The Kevin Feige light beam bit KILLED me. You two should go on the road.

I like Thor and Loki banter and Dark World definitely delivers on that front. Loki and Frigga's scene is also quite poignant.
Thor the dark Thor is one of my favourite MCU movies. Tom Hiddleston and the Loki scenes really elevate it but I also love the other Asgardian bits and most of the earth bits.
I'm a long time Thor: The Dark Thor defender, and I think there's a lot of good little comedy bits for Hemsworth in this too
I think the comedy in general was bad and even if some was good it didn't mix well with all the dark schemes in the movie. I

I always think positively back on it for some reason. I loved seeing more of Asgard as opposed to Thor 1 where most of it was on earth and not fantasy.

I’m pretty sure I remember Villeneuve stating that Skarsgard’s Stonehenge scene is what earned him the role as Baron Vlad Harkonnen in Dune

There’s a lot to love in this movie, I like Thor’s and Janes relationship, the dark elves, the lore established, the Viking funeral scene, and of course Loki.
It's these twos fault I instinctively call this movie Thor: The Dark Thor
My favourite part's when Loki says "Do you wanna know how I got this Skarsgård?"
I respect this movie. It's easy to make Thor a joke character, harder to treat him seriously.

@@owlcircus6811 fair point, but by the end of Dark World he very clearly had killed Odin as he still had resentment for him. Taiki toned down his unpredictability and made for a far less interesting and intimidating character, at least, y'know, in my opinion.

Luckily for Christopher Eccleston, he didn't give up on his US tour and finally was in something great with his role in The Leftovers the following year.
I had no idea Tom Hiddleston did the Captain America cameo beforehand. Very insightful.
To be fair, one thing the first two Thors did better than Ragnarok was making Asgard seem large and grand. By the end of Ragnarok, it seemed like Asgard was a few hundred people in a big empty city. Maybe Hela slaughtered people by the thousands offscreen but the scale never seemed right to me.
I watched Phase 2 last week, after watching Phase 1, and I was presently surprised that I enjoyed The Dark World. It was only the 3rd time I tried to watch it, and the 2nd time, I fell asleep. The first 2 Thor movies are pretty fun.

Then as most Marvel movies do, it shits the bed in the third act. But Eternals takes the further step of setting the soiled bed on fire, puts it out with a big fee, and has the gall to invite you to have another sleepover.

I actually enjoyed this movie when it came out. I liked that it took place away from earth and had more comic elements. It doesn't hold up now but back then, it was aight.

One of the best Loki moments for me is right before Thanos kills him and he’s announcing all of his names, then looks at Thor and refers to himself as “Odinson”.

I think my takeaway of this CoG is that Thor: The Dark World was most certainly a movie that was released in the MCU.
Don't forget that the working title for the original Star Wars was Blue Harvest
I've always said this is the best He-Man movie ever made.
One thing this movie is good for in terms of Thor's development is contrasting the first story, wherein his arrogance leads him to disobey Odin and it's bad, with a story wherein Odin's blindness leads Thor to disobey him and it's good.
The release of this movie was actually when I starting listening to The Weekly Planet and watching videos on this channel, so it has a special place in my heart. I think I need to see a cardiologist.

Blue Harvest was Return of The Jedi's working title. It was to try to keep the local area from knowing they were making a Star Wars movie, because they were getting price gouged when people found out.

Drunk Thor explaining Thor The Dark World’s plot and the reality stone to the other avengers is one of my favorite scenes in Endgame
No matter what people think of the movie the Asgard funeral is one of the best scenes in the MCU
Blue Harvest.. every fucking time!.. Forget you do it and when the line is dropped it's always perfect. Comedy gold.
The reason the films came out so fast is due to a lot of legal holdings, and the Disney acquisition. Marvel was literally making all the films at the same time, so a lot of issues were solved there in the moment or left open enough for a later film to correct. A prime example is Brie Larson technically filmed Endgame BEFORE Captain Marvel. The source is... "The Story of Marvel" Book, it was very very insightful on many potential "issues" and missing pieces.

I sincerely hope you will do a review if the HBO series The Leftovers. Eccleston is in that and he's good, so is Carrie Coon, Liv Tyler, the guy who played Stick on the Daredevil show, Justin Theroux and more.
It's on of the best shows I've ever seen. It has so much emotion.
The first Thor film was great, but one thing which never sits right with me about the sequel is the way its messaging on othering (via the Dark Elves and Malekith) feels so contrary to the themes of Thor 1. Remember this film came out on 2013 - it feels like TDW is telling us 'you're right to worry about the aliens, they DO all want to sneak through your borders and blow up your cities'. Compare this to the wayy more nuanced treatment of Frost Giants in Thor 1 and it's a big step backwards.
Well that's a reach of course there's evil aliens that want to blow up your building just as there's good ones. Doesn't need to be political.

A bit of Thor 2 trivia you missed:
When they were filming Fellowship, in one scene Viggo Mortensen kicked a prop skull so hard, he broke his toe. His scream from the resultant pain was kept in the film as it added emotional weight to the scene.
This is the movie I went took my first date on, she showed up late, kicked over my popcorn when she arrived and then left the building the second the movie was over. Still a better experience than actually just watching Thor: The Dark World.

I had a girlfriend use me just to get into a Yankees ballgame once. She was hitting on me right up until the ninth inning, and then she just suddenly turned cold, as soon as the last out was recorded, and left me by simply saying: "You know... this isn't working... sorry." And then she walked away without even a glance back at me.
I still take that memory very personally. If I ever see that woman again, I swear I will have some kind of vengeance! lol

Kevin Fiege 2013: this is the Empire Strikes Back of Thor movies, the dark chapter.
2017: Odin dies, most of Thor's mates die, Asgard is utterly destroyed, and only a few hundred of his people escape alive. Then they are immediately overtaken by Thanos' ship.

After rewatching this movie in anticipation of this video coming out, it wasn’t as bad as I remembered it being. It’s mid, but it’s not actually BAD tbh
I never expected the Red Dwarf reference a few weeks ago, and I really didn't expect the System Shock clip this week. I love this channel!
This movie did something positive for the MCU though.
First, it showed us the first instance of really gory deaths with those dark gravity grenades.
Second, it officially kicked off the Infinity Stone naming game by name dropping them in the post credits

I loved this film when it came out because I was a teenager with a massive crush on loki, and then I realised it wasn't that great a few years later. I rewatched it yesterday and it really isn't as bad as people say, the villains motivations was lacking but the film was entertaining enough.

@@spartanB0292 personally, I don’t mind The Incredible Hulk. It’s honestly the only MCU Movie that’s the most out of place in conjunction with the rest of the MCU.
It wasn’t even panned, it still had a red tomato and anytime people talk about it they just over-exaggerate their hate on it cos it’s not in their top 10 or whatever
@@mk6rfc1 I don’t think it’s over-exaggerated. It’s pretty much rated as below average. If we’re referring to critics, I only take them but so seriously. It’s more referenced now, but forget top 10, it’s still not the best or even top 20 of the best MCU movies.
@@kdubbss0583 I’m saying the general hate on this movie is over exaggerated, any time I see people hate on this movie it is usually stuff like it’s ‘average’ or essentially “not as good as the rest of the mcu”, like I’d say it’s better than 5/6 movies in the mcu, that being saying even the worst mcu movie isn’t a ‘bad’ movie

2. Josh Dallas couldn't continue playing Fandral because of Once Upon a Time.
3. Chuck was done, so they brought Zac back in. Then they killed him. Fandral. They killed Fandral. Zac is still alive. 😁
