  • A tour of our custom bumper with swing-away hitch receiver for the 6-bike Recon Racks upright bike rack. We had this bumper custom built so we can swing our bikes out of the way and get to our dirt bikes without removing the bikes. An important part of our adventure van!
** Check out the improvements and final version of the bumper: • Van Update! Final touc... ***
We had a similar rack on our previous van ( • Custom Swinging Hitch ... ) and really liked it, but wanted to make some improvements so when we got our new Ford E-350 we decided to start from scratch and totally redesign it using a trailer spindle so it would be easier to swing.
Here's the spindle we used: amzn.com/B01K6JYWK8/?tag=syda...
We were lucky enough to get connected with a friend of a friend, Charlie, who welds bicycles and his friend, Dave, has quite a bit of experience with welding bumpers and hitch receivers and was willing to build the bumper for us. The two of them worked together and it was really cool to watch what they did. And definitely a bonus that Dave had a CNC plasma cutter so we could cut ADVENTR into the bumper!
    Thanks Dave and Charlie!!!!!

Love the bumper hinge. So useful especially if you need access to the back of your vehicle. Good job on the format of the video. The editing and content is really engaging.

while camping when there is rain or dew in the morning what do you do for the bikes in the back? looking at planning a trip with two bikes on the roof and wondering what ppl like you guys do for that? or is int not that big of a deal? etc. any feedback is appreciated!

Good to make sure your chains are lubed because they're the most likely to rust, besides that We don't worry about them...

What type of rack is the original rack. I have a ton of kids, need a bigger rack and like that one alot.

It's the Recon Racks 6-bike. Super solid. We love it!

Hi Team. What is the thickness of the steel used in the swing arm? I heard 2" sqr, but is it 3,4 or more mm thick?

Honestly no idea. We just had someone make it for us but didn't ask about the specifics.

Cool Bumper, what was the cost? Materials? Welding?

Paid about $800 for it, but some of the work was done by a friend for free...

This is a question for the community as well as Syd and Mackey. I’m wondering how folks keep their bikes secure when traveling cross-country? Are there specific cables and locks that are better than others? I know you can buy really thick hardened chains. What’s the general consensus on the best way to keep our prized mountain bike safe? Are there an insurance policy that you can invest in to protect your investment?

      There is insurance: velosurance.com/
We don't have it personally but have heard about it. We have multiple cable locks and a super strong one that we call our "California lock" that we generally only use in California. In general though, we just stay out of cities as much as possible! And if we are somewhere we're worried about, we just leave one person with the car...

Those letters You've cutted out will cause it to always rust unless someone will be able to powder coat it on the inside aswell. Painting it doesn't have any sense at this point, as it will rust from the inside and corrosion will spread starting from letter edges. Best option was to seal it and forget it, now You have to provide drainage as well.
Doesn't it impact the balance of the vehicle tremendously? So much weight behind the bumper plus heavy in the rear.

    • @sydandmacky
      @sydandmacky  6 ปีที่แล้ว

It's a E-350 so deals with the weight no problem!

    • @richardcox5246

Dude if you knew how ridiculously heavy an E350 was...a couple of bikes on the back and a few pieces of tubular steel are negligible.
