    The biggest failure in my eyes is on Comiket security. Nobody prevented this guy from stepping over the boundary, security didn't intervene until long after bystanders started helping, and then failed to apprehend him after an extended attack. That was long enough to do serious harm! If you can't reasonably assure your guest's security, you shouldn't host an event.

    It was the Comiket staff that lost the stalker, not the police. The staff were reluctant to contact the police at first (there is usually no police presence in this type of event). I guess they changed their mind after the guy got away and the responding officer actually made an effort to find Keeki at the venue.
    The advise from the police officer to go to the embassy may sound cold and ridiculous, under the circumstance, might actually be the most effective way to force the police to take action about the case. Having the Austrian embassy issue official notice or complaint to the MOFA would elevate this situation into an international incident (regardless how minor it may be) and potentially draw media attention. This may end up forcing the police into taking action in an effort to save face. Of course that would depend on if the embassy is willing to go to that length to protect their own citizen...

      @comradeofthebalance3147 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ElEscolta It would be very unwise to raise it to an international level. While unfortunate, there are many things to consider:
      Firstly, she will be remembered as someone who was stalked rather than a cosplayer (among others).
      Second, such a label will be a restrictive first impression if others would to find out of their identity and will simply open up the darker side of the industry/sector to the wider public.
      Third, if it somehow spirals if a case was to be made, she will need the resources of her employer to shield them from the many journalists as she is no small influencer in the sector, nor widespread enough for the above mentioned be to be largely negated. While I don’t doubt her strength, it will spread and cause more problems.
      If it was much more serious, the Japanese police would certainly be more swift and ensure it does not gain too much traction. But like others mentioned, this isn’t ‘serious’ enough.

    Sorry to keep everyone waiting. I was the photographer there during the incident. Below is what actually happened. Long passage so be warned:
    When I took my first picture, a man suddenly jumped in through the road block, and because the incident was sudden, everyone was shocked, the first two things to come to my mind were: was he someone that Keekihime (T/N: 姫 = hime, shorthand for Keekihime) knew and was trying to do a prank? If you invite friends over to your house, and one of your friends assaults one of your other friends in that house, it doesn't matter if they don't live with you. They still got assaulted and predator is still a threat to your own house. The Japanese police are not only continuing to endanger Keeki, but their own citizens as well. This is off topic, but I've always had a distaste of what I've seen of the Japanese Cosplay Photography scene. Scenes of dozens upon dozens of so-called "photographers" literally cornering a single cosplayer to take pictures for who knows how long. I've only listened to the first couple moments of her Twitter space, but I'm going to guess she was stuck in one of these situations and the Stalker was bold enough to sneak up from behind.

But it’s not like they’re circling the cosplayers by surprise or anything. They just wait patiently, go to a certain spot with a cosplayer, follow instructions and wait for her to pose. There is nothing stalker-y or creepy about the way photographers are in Japan. And if there are incidents it’s a one-off about a particular creepy guy that may or may not be a photographer.

      Another comment I can add, as traumatic as this event was for Keekihime, it's also just the tip of the iceberg of the abuse and harassment. I once was having a post shoot dinner with two female Cosplayers, and the entire time we waited for our food, they were sharing with each other all the dozens of lewd dms they got that week from random men. I can only imagine how toxic Keeki's inbox is as an internationally known Cosplayer.

      @@YourTypicalMental I’m not denying that creeps can pose as photographer. But the way photographers are in Japan isn’t particularly more creepy than normal photographers anywhere else. If anything it’s usually better (because they follow rules and don’t take surprise photographs to post online without your consent...).
      They are not crowds of creeps and they are not "cornering" cosplayers. Just because they place themselves in a circle to all take shots of a cosplayer taking poses doesn’t make them creeps. It’s just how they position themselves.

    I've been stalked before. The police don't do anything about stalkers until they hurt you, period. The best they do is a piece of paper that says they can't be near you, but that doesn't stop them from buying a house down the street from you or just following you in general. Also getting a restraining order is hard if they haven't already hurt you. Best advice I can give to anyone is to get a weapon and be ready to defend yourself because no one else will be able to protect you 24/7. 24:05 "Why was there no proper security in place?"
    Because Japan is a high-trust society. Most people in Japan just hope and expect others to do fhe right thing, and for the most part, it works beautifully. But the Achilles' heel of a high-trust society is one crazy guy who doesn't play by the rules that literally everyone else around him does. When this guy shows up, there are no guardrails. Nobody knows what to do. There are no systems in place to cope with it. That's the double-edged sword of running on trust. It's like when you have one of those road-side produce stalls that runs on the honor system, where people take what they want and just leave the money in a jar. If one sociopath happened by, he could easily swipe all the produce AND all the money in the jar, throwing everything into total chaos and ruin.
    It only takes one person to betray the collective trust, and all hell breaks loose...but worse, the institutions of the high-trust society are then ill-equuipped to deal with the aftermath, as they have little experience doing so. You can see this in the response both of convention security, who were more focused on just getting back to the business at hand, not grasping the seriousness of the situation, and of the actual police, who lackadaisically enforced already weak laws in this domain.

A member of AKB48 had a well-known stalker who signed up for a handshake event, and he managed to get a _saw_ into the venue with him and nearly cut her hand off while she was holding it. American cops won't arrest stalkers either unless they commit a different crime, like breaking into your house, though I'm not sure how things are done in Keeki's home country.

If you see big cosplayers like enako, she employs a team to secure the area during photo session. So yes, better bring your own security or at least friends. You can. You might get kicked out of the country, but neither a lackluster police nor the perpetrator of SA is going to try to press charges on someone for physical assault against the perp as that's just going to keep eyes on the SA case. If it's documented well enough (there's video of the guy performing the SA before you respond) you're likely to win brownie points with every female on the planet. I can't think of any other country that lets people get off scot-free with SA to the levels that Japan does, and a little street justice when none otherwise exists is going to be taken favorably.
